This article reports on recent empirical research by the author among Church of England curates. Burgess (1999) found that training incumbents did not provide adequate training nor facilitate reflection on ministry. He offered a taxonomy of training incumbent inadequacies, his "pathologies of training." Examining unsolicited comments from curates in a recent questionnaire provides opportunity to look again at these pathologies. These new data provide only partial support for Burgess's pathologies. Implications for the selection, training and evaluation of the performance of those who supervise new ministers indicate that the Church of England could provide more effectively for the support, care and continued learning of those recently ordained.
