This article describes a collaborative self-study of seven early career mathematics teacher educators. Our collective group sought to improve our practice in, and enhance transparency around, supporting prospective teachers as they engaged in equity-based mathematics pedagogies. The collaboration evolved into a critical friendship and provided a space to study, reflect and supportively challenge our practices. We found that self-study methodology matched our motivation to improve our practice as teacher educators, while recognizing the contexts of our other professional and institutional obligations and upholding our own values. We draw upon a traffic roundabout as a metaphor for our experience in self-study, noting the ways it provided professional learning and moved our work with prospective teachers forward. During the past decade, usability testing has become an integral component of Web design and development in libraries. Within the past five years, library portals allowing some degree of personal customization have established a presence on a number of library home pages. This chapter reviews some basic concepts of usability testing and then examines how usability testing has been employed to inform the design and use of Web sites and customized library portals at the University of Washington and at other institutions. Drawing on a larger, cross-institutional study that examines equitable elementary mathematics education, this article reports initial findings related to tensions that emerged for preservice teachers (PSTs) related to trusting students with open-ended, challenging mathematics tasks. Data composed of 194 PSTs' written responses to a survey question. Using methods of qualitative analysis, findings indicate two prominent tensions that emerged for PSTs related to trusting students with open-ended challenging tasks: productive struggle versus unproductive failure and teacher control versus student control. These findings suggest that reform efforts that encourage teachers to implement open-ended, challenging tasks may not come to fruition if underlying issues of (mis)trust teachers may have related to students are not unpacked and addressed. Objectives: Joint mobilizations are often quantified using a 4-point grading system based on the physiotherapist’s detection of resistance. It is suggested that the initial resistance to joint mobilizations is imperceptible to physiotherapists, but that at some point through range becomes perceptible, a point termed R1. Grades of mobilization traditionally hinge around this concept and are performed either before or after R1. Physiotherapists, however, show poor reliability in applying grades of mobilization. The definition of R1 is ambiguous and dependent on the skills of the individual physiotherapist. The aim of this study is to test a revised grading system where R1 is considered at the beginning of range, and the entire range, as perceived by the physiotherapists maximum force application, is divided into three, creating 3 grades of mobilization. Method: Thirty-two post-registration physiotherapists and nineteen pre-registration students assessed end of range (point R2) and then applied 3 grades of AP mobilizations, over the talus, in an asymptomatic models ankle. Vertical forces were recorded through a force platform. Intra-class Correlation Coefficients, Standard Error of Measurement, and Minimal Detectable Change were calculated to explore intra-rater reliability on intra-day and inter-day testing. T-tests determined group differences. Results: Intra-rater reliability was excellent for intra-day testing (ICC 0.96–0.97), and inter-day testing (ICC 0.85–0.93). No statistical difference was found between pre- and post-registration groups. Discussion: Standardizing the definition of grades of mobilization, by moving R1 to the beginning of range and separating grades into thirds, results in excellent intra-rater reliability on intra-day and inter-day tests. In 1915 Canadian physician John McCrae published “In Flanders Fields,” a poem that drew on his experience at the Belgian front during World War I. A touching depiction of sorrow, but also a rousing call to arms, the poem quickly became one of the best-known poems of the War, prominently used in various American media. By 1920 at least fifty-five composers across the United States had set the poem to music, including Arthur Foote, Charles Ives, and John Philip Sousa. AL cardiomyopathy leading to heart failure (HF) represents a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in systemic amyloidosis. However, the paucity of robust in vivo models of AL-induced cardiac dysfunction has limited our ability to probe the mechanisms of AL heart disease. To address this problem, we have developed a model of AL HF in zebrafish embryos by injection of in vitro transcribed mRNA encoding amyloidogenic light chain (aLC) into fertilized oocytes. We demonstrate that expression of aLC causes cardiomyopathy in developing zebrafish without significantly impairing extracardiac development. The cardiac ventricle of embryos expressing aLC exhibit impaired contractility, smaller size, and increased myocardial thickness which result in congestion and edema, features paralleling the clinical manifestations of amyloid cardiomyopathy. Phosphorylated p38, a marker of oxidative stress, was increased in response to aLC expression. No evidence of amyloid fibril deposition was identified. Thus, expression of aLC mRNA in zebrafish results in cardio toxic effects without fibril deposition. This is consistent with prior evidence indicating that aLC oligomers mediate cardiac dysfunction in vitro. This model will allow exploration of amyloid pathophysiology and testing of interventions to reduce and reverse the deleterious effects of amyloidosis on myocardial function. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It is shown experimentally that both surface tilt and in-plane translation motion can be independently estimated using the speckle photographic correlation technique by capturing consecutive images in two linear canonical transform domains (using two different quadratic phase systems). A geometric interpretation, based on use of the Wigner distribution function is presented to describe the method and a simple matrix approach, based on the ABCD matrix, is used to quantify it. It is shown that the sensitivity and dynamic range of measurement of both tilt and translation are both variable and depend on the parameters of the ABCD matrix. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article presents information on the rise of interest in Great Britain from within academic circles and from a policy and practice perspective for the use of tracking as a working technique. This interest has come about alongside the expanding discipline of youth and youth transitions. Over the last decade and more, there has been an increased emphasis on understanding the way in which the transition from youth to adulthood is made and more specifically what enables some young people to make relatively smooth transitions where for others it is a hugely complex process. It is without doubt that tracking techniques or longitudinal qualitative research can be effective methods for examining the intricate interplay between the range of factors that come together to both hinder and assist young people as they move through the transition period. To date however there is little published material on the use of tracking as a technique and as a consequence little that informs how conducting this type of work operates on the ground.

Multiple regression equations for estimating Wiggins content scores from 399- and 168-item abbreviations of Form R of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) were derived for 100 patients and cross-validated in a separate sample of 50 patients. Across samples, Rs between 399-item short form scales and corresponding full scales were very high (median = .98 for the total sample), and the equations predicted accurately in cross-validation. Rs in estimating from 168 items were lower (median = .91 for the total sample), but the equations estimated mean content scores well in cross-validation. These results were viewed as indicating that there may be little toss in estimating from 399 items but that error in prediction may be unacceptably high for some of the 168-item short form scales. The correspondence of Wiggins scales and standard MMPI scales was also studied through regression analyses, and it was concluded that, although there is considerable overlap in the two sets of scales, inferences as to self-report content from the standard scales are not always simple or especially accurate. Highlights from the article: We have previously described the discovery and development of GAIM (general amyloid interaction motif)-Ig (immunoglobulin) fusions as therapeutic candidates for neurodegenerative indications [[1]]. In addition, we show that GAIM-Ig fusions co-localize with amyloid deposits in mouse models for LC amyloidosis, and that GAIM-Ig can mediate the disruption of an amyloidoma consisting of human patient derived LC fibres. In the studies described here, we have confirmed and extended GAIM's ability to recognize canonical amyloid structures found in peripheral amyloid diseases, such as TTR and AL amyloidosis.

We report the occurrence of the Asiatic clam, Corbicula sp. in Lake Superior. Although Corbicula sp. has been recorded earlier from the Great Lakes, this is the first report of the clam from Lake Superior. Individuals were distributed in the thermal effluent at the Upper Peninsula Power Company, with the greatest density at 22 deg.C. Density averaged 96-m{sup}2{end}. Shell length ranged from 3 mm to 24 mm with85% of clams being < 1 year old. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
