AbstractThis paper has investigated the rheological behavior and micro-morphology of CTAC wormlike micelle (WLM) which cross-linked with polyelectrolyte-grafted nanosilica (PEN) and nonionic hydrophobically-associating polymer (HAP). Cryo-transmission electron microscopy (Cryo-TEM) is adopted to observe the micro-morphology of the associative structure. Results show that PEN cross-linked with CTAC wormlike micelle exhibits higher zero-shear viscosity than the non-modified nano silica, and this viscosity is continuously raised as the PEN concentration is increased. PEN-micelle complex has excellent anti-salt properties and its zero-shear viscosity is increasing in a KCl concentration range of 0–10%. The shear viscosity of wormlike micelle is enhanced by HAP and polymer molecules dominate the rheological characteristic of the mixed fluid. The shear viscosity of HAP-micelle fluid is further increased by PEN. However, the rheological characteristic of the micelle-HAP-PEN complex is identical to that of wormlike micelle. The elasticity of wormlike micelle is noticeably enhanced by cross-linking with PEN and HAP. They stimulate the formation of micelle to significantly increase the length and rigidity of wormlike micelle. Surfactant molecules spontaneously arrange on the surface of PEN and grow outwards, which associates with HAP to generate the tighter three-dimensional network structure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

According to the conservation of resources theory and social exchange theory, this paper explores how job incumbents’ work-to-family conflict and enrichment influence their spouses’ satisfaction with their work-family balance, which in turn impacts their spouses’ intentions to provide social support for the job incumbents’ work issues. We employed a mixed-method design. Study 1 involved a field study of a paired sample of 171 job incumbents and their spouses. Study 2 involved a scenario-based experiment (N = 274). The results showed that the relationship between job incumbents’ WFC and their spouses’ intentions to provide social support was mediated by the spouses’ satisfaction with the focal job incumbents’ WFB. We also found that job incumbents’ WFC interacts with WFE to influence their spouses’ intentions to provide social support via their spouses’ satisfaction with their WFB. This study of 390 full-time Chinese managers examined the relationship between gender and work-to-family conflict. Guided by identity theory, we found that work centrality and family centrality mediated the relationship between gender and work-to-family conflict. The findings indicate men follow a work centrality pathway that results in increased work-to-family conflict and women follow a family centrality pathway that also results in higher levels of work-to-family conflict. Gender role attitudes moderated the relationship between gender and work centrality, and the indirect relationship between gender and work-to-family conflict through work centrality was stronger for managers with traditional gender role attitudes than those with non-traditional gender role attitudes. We examine the impact of party organisation construction of accounting firms on audit quality. We find that although there is no relationship between the party membership status of auditors and audit quality, the audit quality of party-member auditors significantly improves after accounting firms strengthen party organisation construction. Additional analyses show that the positive impact of auditor party membership on audit quality does not generate a contagious effect in the presence of party organisation construction. Moreover, cross-section results show that the impact of party organisation construction on audit quality is more pronounced in Non-Big4 audit firms, and in audit firms having a higher proportion of party-member partners/employees. Finally, we find that party organisation construction of accounting firms plays a more significant role in improving audit quality in state-owned firms. This study examines how social support is linked to satisfaction by simultaneously testing a cross-domain effect and within-domain effect. Guided by domain-specific mechanism and conservation of resources theory, we propose that work-family balance mediates the positive relationship between support from work (family) domain and satisfaction in family (work) domain (i.e. cross-domain effect). Based on social exchange mechanism, we propose that support from the work (family) domain is directly related to satisfaction within the same domain (i.e. within-domain effect). Using a sample of 281 Chinese middle- and upper-level managers, we tested our model using Structural Equation Modelling. Family support for work issues was linked to job satisfaction via work-family balance. Supervisor support for family issues had a positive direct effect on job satisfaction; family support for work issues had a positive direct effect on family satisfaction. We also found that job satisfaction was positively related to family satisfaction and gender moderated the relationship. We discuss our findings as they relate to the Chinese work and family context. A switch from autophagy to apoptosis is implicated in chondrocytes during the osteoarthritis (OA) progression with currently unknown mechanism(s). In this study we utilized a flow fluid shear stress (FFSS) model in cultured chondrocytes and a unilateral anterior crossbite (UAC) animal model. We found that both FFSS and UAC actively induced endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS) in the temporomandibular joints (TMJ) chondrocytes, as demonstrated by dramatic increases in expression of HSPA5, p-EIF2AK3, p-ERN1 and ATF6. Interestingly, both FFSS and UAC activated not only pro-death p-EIF2AK3-mediated ERS-apoptosis programs but also pro-survival p-ERN1-mediated autophagic flux in chondrocytes. Data from FFSS demonstrated that MTORC1, a downstream of p-ERN1, suppressed autophagy but promoted p-EIF2AK3 mediated ERS-apoptosis. Data from UAC model demonstrated that at early stage both the p-ERN1 and p-EIF2AK3 were activated and MTORC1 was inhibited in TMJ chondrocytes. At late stage, MTORC1-p-EIF2AK3-mediated ERS apoptosis were predominant, while p-ERN1 and autophagic flux were inhibited. Inhibition of MTORC1 by TMJ local injection of rapamycin in rats or inducible ablation of MTORC1 expression selectively in chondrocytes in mice promoted chondrocyte autophagy and suppressed apoptosis, and reduced TMJ cartilage loss induced by UAC. In contrast, MTORC1 activation by TMJ local administration of MHY1485 or genetic deletion of Tsc1, an upstream MTORC1 suppressor, resulted in opposite effects. Collectively, our results establish that aberrant mechanical loading causes cartilage degeneration by activating, at least in part, the MTORC1 signaling which modulates the autophagy and apoptosis programs in TMJ chondrocytes. Thus, inhibition of MTORC1 provides a novel therapeutic strategy for prevention and treatment of OA. Based on social role theory and a gender role orientation perspective, this study extended the two mechanisms (i.e. resource depletion and source attribution) that link work-to-family conflict to perceived accomplishment in the family and work domains by testing the moderating effects of gender and gender role orientation on the relationships. Data were collected from managers via questionnaires in China, and 225 cases were analyzed with hierarchical regression models. The results showed that compared with female managers, the negative relationship between work-to-family conflict and perceived family accomplishment was stronger for male managers. Within the male group, we found that the negative relationship between work-to-family conflict and perceived family accomplishment was stronger for male managers with an egalitarian gender role orientation than those with a traditional gender role orientation. In addition, for male managers with a traditional gender role orientation, there was a positive relationship between work-to-family conflict and perceived work accomplishment. 1. Diabetes is often accompanied with depression and hypercholesterolemia. It is possible that paroxetine and pravastatin are co-administered to diabetic patients. The aim of this study was to research the differential effect of pravastatin on plasma exposure of paroxetine in normal and diabetic rats. 2. Pharmacokinetics of paroxetine was investigated following oral administration of paroxetine with and without pravastatin in normal and diabetic rats. Effects of pravastatin on metabolism, intestinal absorption and hepatic uptake of paroxetine were investigated. Activity and expression of hepatic Oatp1 and Oatp2 were also assessed. 3. Pravastatin decreased plasma exposure of paroxetine in normal rats, but increased exposure of paroxetine in diabetic rats. Pravastatin neither affected metabolism nor intestinal absorption of paroxetine. Data from hepatocytes demonstrated that hepatic uptake of paroxetine were involved in Oatp1 and Oatp2. Diabetes suppressed Oatp1 activity and expression, but enhanced Oatp2 activity and expression. Pravastatin stimulated Oatp1 but inhibited Oatp2 activity. 4. We concluded that differential effects of pravastatin on plasma exposure of paroxetine in normal and diabetic rats was partly due to the fact that diabetes suppressed Oatp1 activity and expression but enhanced Oatp2 activity and expression as well as that pravastatin stimulated Oatp1 activity but inhibited Oatp2 activity. 1. Atorvastatin is frequently prescribed for lowering blood cholesterol and for prevention of events associated with cardiovascular disease. The aim of this study was to investigate the pharmacokinetics of atorvastatin in diabetic rats. 2. Diabetes was induced in rats by combination of high-fat diet and low-dose streptozotocin (35 mg/kg). Plasma concentrations of atorvastatin following oral (10 mg/kg) and intravenous (2 mg/kg) administrations to rats were measured by LC-MS. Metabolism and uptake of atorvastatin in primary hepatocytes of experimental rats were assessed. Protein expressions and activities of hepatic Cyp3a and Oatp2 were further investigated. 3. Clearances of atorvastatin in diabetic rats following oral and intravenous administrations were remarkably increased, leading to marked decreases in area-under-the-plasma concentration–time curve (AUC). The estimated oral and systematic clearances of atorvastatin in diabetic rats were 4.5-fold and 2.0-fold of control rats, respectively. Metabolism and uptake of atorvastatin in primary hepatocytes isolated from diabetic rats were significantly increased, which were consistent with the up-regulated protein expressions and activities of hepatic Cyp3a and Oatp2. 4. All these results demonstrated that the plasma exposure of atorvastatin was significantly decreased in diabetic rats, which was partly due to the up-regulated activities and expressions of both hepatic Cyp3a and Oatp2. Context: The flower bud ofTussilago farfaraL. (Compositae) (FTF) is one of the traditional Chinese medicinal herbs used to treat cough, phlegm, bronchitic, and asthmatic conditions. Objective: The objective of this study is to isolate four caffeoylquinic acids from the ethyl acetate extract (EtE) of FTF and to evaluate their antitussive, expectorant, and anti-inflammatory activities. Materials and methods: The structures of compounds1–4isolated from EtE were determined by spectral analysis. Mice were orally treated with these compounds and their mixture (in a ratio of 5:28:41:26 as in EtE) at doses of 10 and 20 mg/kg once daily for 3 d. The antitussive and expectorant activities were evaluated separately with the ammonia liquor-induced model and the phenol red secretion model. The anti-inflammation activity was evaluated using leukocyte count in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid after ammonia liquor-induced acute airway inflammation. Results: The four compounds were identified as chlorogenic acid (1), 3,5-dicaffeoylquinic acid (2), 3,4-dicaffeoylquinic acid (3), and 4,5-dicaffeoylquinic acid (4). All compounds, especially compound4(58.0% inhibition in cough frequency), showed a significant antitussive effect.However, the mixture was the most effective to inhibit the cough frequency by 61.7%. All compounds also showed a significant expectorant effect, while compound2was the most potent to enhance the phenol red secretion by 35.7%. All compounds significantly alleviated inflammation, but compound4showed the strongest effect to inhibit the leukocytosis by 49.7%. Discussion and conclusion: The caffeoylquinic acids and their mixture, exhibiting significant antitussive, expectorant, and anti-inflammatory effects, could be considered as the main effective ingredients of FTF, and they may act in a collective and synergistic way. 1. Liver distribution and systemic exposure of pravastatin were the determinant factors of efficacy and toxicity of pravastatin. Aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of paroxetine on the liver distribution and systemic exposure of pravastatin in diabetic rats induced by combining high fat diet (HFD) and low-dose streptozotocin (STZ). 2. Plasma concentrations and liver distribution of pravastatin were measured in the presence of paroxetine. Effect of paroxetine on pravastatin excretionviabile, intestine, feces and urine, as well as pravastatin absorptionviaintestine was documented. Freshly isolated hepatocytes and Caco-2 cells were used to investigate the effect of paroxetine on pravastatin transport. 3. Paroxetine increased the systemic exposure of pravastatin and decreased hepatic distribution of pravastatin in diabetic rats.In vitro, paroxetine inhibited the hepatic uptake of pravastatin and promoted the efflux of pravastatin in freshly isolated hepatocytes, which may partly explain the decreased hepatic distribution of pravastatin by paroxetine. This study simultaneously examined the two mechanisms (i.e. spillover and crossover effects) that link work-to-family conflict and life satisfaction among Chinese married couples. Data were collected from a sample of 123 Chinese managers and their spouses. Work-to-family conflict was measured from two sources: self-reported ratings and spouse-reported ratings. The results provided support for the suggested direct spillover mechanism for both husbands and wives: work-to-family conflict to life satisfaction. In addition, we found that work-to-family conflict crossed over to life satisfaction from wives to husbands but not from husbands to wives. Five solvent extracts (ethanol, petroleum ether, EtOAC, n-butanol, and water) from Fallopia convolvulus (L.) Love were separated and their inhibitory effects on nitric oxide production in lipopolysaccharide-activated macrophages were evaluated. Three new flavonoids, falloconvolin A (1), falloconvolin B (2), and quercetin-3-O-(2-E-sinapoxyl)-glucopyranoside (3), together with 17 known phenolic compounds, were isolated from the active EtOAC extract, and their structures were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic analysis and literature data. Five new compounds, dencryol A (1), dencryol B (2), crystalltone (3), crystallinin (4), and 3-hydroxy-2-methoxy-5,6-dimethylbenzoic acid (5), together with six known compounds, dendronobilin B (6), syringic acid (7), apigenin (8), isoviolanthin (9), 6'''-glucosyl-vitexin (10), and palmarumycin JC2 (11), have been isolated from the stems of Dendrobium crystallinum, of which compounds 9-11 were isolated from the genus Dendrobium for the first time, and all the other compounds were first obtained from this plant.
