The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) filed its support for Piper Aircraft in the Edward C Cleveland vs Piper Aircraft Corpcase on aircraft liability. The complainant had accused the aircraft company ofcausing his injuries due to defective design of the aircraft. However, the General Aviation Manufacturers Assn contended that the alleged aircraft complied with all federal requirements. Meanwhile, the FAA cited its Federal Aviation Act which gives the government sole jurisdiction on issues regarding air safety and questioned the authority of the jurors to decide on the matter.

The lawyer representing the families of 15 people killed or injured in a helicopter crash in the North Sea claims that company policy documents dictate that the case be tried in the US. The defendants, joint venture partners Exxon Corp and Shell Oil Co, are working to have the case heard in Scotland, and in fact have launched a suit there against subcontractors, alleging operator error as the cause of the accident. Claimants in the US suit contend that a policy established by the two companies in Texas to reduce non-productive time at their joint venture caused the helicopter to be flying in hazardous conditions.
