- Abstract
Hyperpigmentation disorders are very commonly seen in dermatology. They can have severe psychosocial and emotional adverse effects on patients. Skin whitening is a term used for lightening the complexion of the skin through artificial means like creams, lotions, soaps and injections. Unfortunately the appeal of these skin bleaching products is based on the obsession of people across the world with skin color. Treatment of hyperpigmentation is often difficult, especially in dark-skinned individuals. Many modalities of treatment for skin hyperpigmentation are available including chemical agents or plant extracts, but none of them are completely satisfactory. Both physicians and patients are searching for topical skin care solutions with long lasting effect to improve of this problem. In this article, a review of notable depigmenting and lightening agents reported in the literature for use in disorders of hyperpigmentation is presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
