An increase of 8.5% in adjusted gross income and an increase of 9.6% in taxable income, both better than three times the inflation rate of 2.3%, are reflected in early data for tax year 1997. Total income tax was $594.1 billion, up by 10.2%. Electronic filing of returns increased by 28.3% to account for 21.6% of the total returns. Early estimates are based on individual returns filed through April 1998.

Adjusted gross income (minus deficit) on U.S. individual income tax returns totaled $4.5 trillion for tax year 1996, an increase of 8.3% over the previous year, with 120.4 million returns filed. The average tax rate was 14.5%, up 0.5%. An increase of 5.5% occurred in salaries and wages, while taxable pensions and annuities increased by 8.0%. Total deductions increased by 4.1% to $979.6 billion, and taxable income was $3.1 trillion, up by 9.8%. Earned income credit totaled $28.8 billion, an increase of 11.1%.

Taxable income, tax liability and number of individual returns filed all increased in 1996. Total taxable income rose to $3.1 billion, 10.6% over 1995 amounts. Total tax liability increased by 13% over the prior year to reach $661.1 billion. Individual returns filed for 1996 numbered 120.6 million, up 2.1% from 1995. Tax deduction amounts rose by 6.4%, totaling $991.4 billion for the year.

Total net income for partnerships for the tax year 1993 was $66.7 billion, up from $42.9 billion in 1992. The finance, real estate and insurance industries accounted for nearly 68% of this increase, posting combined net income of $15.3 billion, compared to a net deficit of $0.8 billion in 1992. The only industrial divisions that did not show increases in income over the previous year were agriculture, forestry and fishing.

The number of U.S. individual tax returns filed in 1993 totaled 114.6 million, an increase of .8 million returns or .7% over the previous year. Adjusted gross income less deficit was more than $3.7 trillion, an increase of 2.3%. Taxable income increased by 2.2% to more than $2.4 trillion. There was a 5.3% increase in total income tax, mainly due to increased marginal tax rates and alternative minimum tax rates for high-income taxpayers. The annual growth rate for the consumer price index (CPI-U) was 3.0% in 1993. Net capital gain increased by 21.4%. Taxable interest decreased by 19.8%, and unemployment compensation was down 12.4%.

A total of 846,407 tax returns reflecting adjusted gross income of $200,000 or more were filed in 1991, representing 0.738% of all returns. When other sources of income are included to reflect expanded income, the number of returns reporting $200,00 or more reaches 892,178, or 0.778% of all returns. No income tax liability was reported on 1,114 returns with expanded income of $200,000 or more. Historical trends in this tax bracket and the most common means of offsetting income taxes used by high wage earners are discussed.

113.8 million individual tax returns were filed for tax year 1992, representing a decrease of 1.1 million from the previous year. Total adjusted gross income from these returns was more than $3.6 trillion, a 4.8% increase over 1991. Both taxable income and total income tax increased from the previous year, reflecting a growth rate in salaries and wages that was twice as high for 1992 as it was for 1991.
