‘Crosswinds: collaborative creativity as transformative practice’ is an international Symposium that was included in the 2nd edition of the festival ‘Flute Ensembles Across Europe 2023’ promoted by the European Flute Council (EFC) in close collaboration with and hosted by the Portuguese Flute Association (APF), University of Aveiro, INET-MD and ID+. The event takes place at the Aveiro Congress Centre in Aveiro, Portugal, from January 26 to 29, 2023. Thus, adjacent to the Symposium, the event includes performances by Flute ensembles from all over Europe as well as by major artists together with lectures, workshops, seminars and masterclasses. The general theme of this edition is "Creativity as Interaction", so a new strand of academic reflection has been included, open to all performing areas, as an offfestival reflection activity aiming to bridge the gap between artistic production and academic research. Artists researchers were thus invited to submit proposals to this international Symposium, their presentations taking place on 26 and 27 January leading up to and introducing the festival. Presentations that advocated change regarding diversity, equality and inclusivity, with a particular interest in new formats and performing concepts were prioritized. published

Practices associated with the teaching and learning of music performance historically focus on values and expectations established in the 19th century Western conservatory context and its master-apprentice pedagogical model. In this presentation the impact of a new approach to teaching music performance, based on artistic research, will be described. Such an approach was offered as a teaching and learning activity (REACT training school) promoted by a strategic partnership, funded by the ERASMUS+, that involved 5 European higher music institutions. A total of 17 higher education students took part in the REACT training school. The course was unpacked in 40 hours during one academic week at the University of Aveiro in Portugal. Topics included artistic research, ethics and remix culture, artistic career, artistic projects, health and well-being, social intervention in arts and artistic documentation. The impact of REACT training school was assessed through a qualitative study based on interviews, which were analyzed using a thematic approach. The questions addressed students􏱳 perspectives on the role of an artistic-research-based learning approach to performance teaching and learning in higher education music institutions. From the thematic analysis two main themes emerged: impact and improvements. The first is related to how the activity affected their artistic and professional path. The second refers to changes to be implemented in future editions. Results suggests that REACT training school opened space for students to think 􏱴out of the bo􏰶􏱵, developing a critical and reflexive attitude that embraced news aspects regarding a set of diversified topics as funding, score, curriculum, creativity, theory and practice. At the same time, the results suggests that future editions must open more space to individual mentoring, integrating more profoundly students and instrumental teachers in the activities proposed. The results here presented play an important role in the current discussion regarding the role of artistic research in higher education and how institutions can improve existing artistic and academic practices. published

La serie de Cahiers de investigación artística, creada en el IMPAR, Universidad de Aveiro/INET-md, se debe a la responsabilidad y a la necesidad de ofrecer - a nuestros estudiantes en primer lugar, pero también a la comunidad académica en general - una orientación coherente para ayudar a la concepción, diseño y desarrollo de proyectos de investigación artística. El objetivo de esta serie de Cahiers es establecer un camino alternativo para la investigación artística. Firmemente basado en la articulación entre el conocimiento declarativo y el procedimental, el 1er Cahier dio los primeros pasos en este camino y constituye un intento de definir claramente cuándo la investigación es una investigación artística. El 2º Cahier se publicó en enero de 2019 para complementar los fundamentos epistemológicos propuestos en el 1er Cahier lanzando dos premisas cuya característica distintiva es dictar la inextricable complementariedad y complicidad entre la producción artística y su respectivo esclarecimiento. Resumiendo, se propuso que la aclaración se entendiera como una contribución escrita - posiblemente reforzada por otros medios - que tendría la doble función de mejorar nuestra experiencia estética y dilucidar sobre la consiguiente reconfiguración mitológica. La reconfiguración mitopoética sería el resultado de un proceso de reflexión que debería especificar la relevancia de la intervención artística - dentro de los campos sociales/artísticos en los que interviene - y se basaría en cuatro pasos: escepticismo, criticismo de las viejas construcciones mitopoéticas, decisiones éticas y, finalmente, sistematización. Se sugirió que se reconociera la clarificación como una contribución al conocimiento según su potencial para promover la comunicación empática. A partir de la articulación de los modos de conocimiento narrativo y paradigmático, se sugirió que el pensamiento material fuera el modo de conocimiento de la clarificación. El pensamiento material se basa en el significado corporeizado, se comunica sólo en co-presencia, y por lo tanto apela a la empatía. De ello se desprende que la investigación artística no depende necesariamente de los métodos tradicionales de observación y análisis de la investigación académica, que pertenecen al modo paradigmático del conocimiento. Estructura de este volumen Construido en un texto bidimensional que yuxtapone modos narrativos y paradigmáticos de discurso1, este 3er Cahier propone la investigación artística como un campo transdisciplinario dedicado a los artistas interesados en triangular diferentes modos de conocimiento para realizar todo el potencial de sus prácticas artísticas. Este volumen está estructurado en cuatro partes. En primer lugar, presentamos una breve reseña de los principales puntos tratados en el 2º Cahier, añadiendo algunas aportaciones nuevas relativas a los procesos de producción y comunicación del conocimiento. En segundo lugar, examinamos más de cerca la noción de configuraciones mitopoéticas: el papel que desempeñan dentro de la humanidad y su relación con la investigación artística. En tercer lugar, discutimos el papel de los gestos en el proceso de reconfiguración de nuevas narrativas mitopoéticas, elaborando la noción de Ejemplarización propuesta por Lehrer (2012). Finalmente, en la cuarta parte, presentamos un modelo explicativo para la investigación artística basado en la intersección de tres esferas fundamentales: Ética, Cultura del Remix y Apreciación Estética. published

The series of Cahiers of artistic research, created at IMPAR, University of Aveiro/INET-md, respond to the responsibility and the need to offer - first and foremost to our students, but also to the broader academic community - consistent guidance to assist the conception, design and development of artistic research projects. The aim of this series of Cahiers is to establish an alternative path for artistic research. Firmly grounded in the articulation between declarative and procedural knowledge, the 1st Cahier took the first steps along this path and constitutes an attempt to clearly define when research is artistic research. The second Cahier was published in January 2019 to complement the epistemological foundations proposed in the first Cahier launching two premises whose distinctive feature is to dictate the inextricable complementarity and complicity between artistic production and its respective clarification. Resuming, it was proposed that clarification should be understood as a written contribution - possibly reinforced by other media - which would have the dual function of improving our aesthetic experience and elucidating on the consequent mythopoetic reconfiguration. The mythopoetic reconfiguration would result from a process of reflection that should specify the relevance of the artistic intervention - within the social/artistic fields in which it intervenes - and would be based on four steps: scepticism, criticism of old mythopoetic constructions, ethical decisions and, finally, systematisation. It was suggested that clarification should be recognized as a contribution to knowledge according to its potential to promote empathetic communication. Emerging from the articulation of narrative and paradigmatic modes of knowledge, material thinking was suggested to be clarification's mode of knowledge. Material thinking is grounded on embodied meaning, is communicated in co-presence only, and therefore appeals to empathy. It follows that artistic research does not necessarily depend on the traditional academic research methods of observation and analysis, which belong to the paradigmatic mode of knowledge. Structure of this volume Built in a two-dimensional text that juxtaposes narrative and paradigmatic modes of discourse, this 3rd Cahier proposes artistic research as a trans-disciplinary field dedicated to artists interested in triangulating different modes of knowledge to realize the full potential of their artistic practices. This volume is structured in four parts. First, we present a short overview of the main points discussed in the 2nd Cahier, adding some new inputs concerning the processes of knowledge production and communication. Secondly, we look more closely at the notion of mythopoetic configurations: the role they play within humanity and their relationship with artistic research. Thirdly, we discuss the role of gestures in the process of reconfiguring new mythopoetic narratives, elaborating on the notion of Exemplarization proposed by Lehrer (2012). Finally, in the fourth part, we present an explanatory model for artistic research based on the intersection of three fundamental spheres: Ethics, Remix Culture and Aesthetic Appreciation. published

Created in 2017, ÍMPAR is a biannual publication whose objective is to disseminate the knowledge production in the field of Artistic Research. With this issue, the journal concludes its 3rd year of activity with a golden key. The editorial board of ÍMPAR invited three outstanding researchers from the field of Artistic Research to submit articles that would address at least one of the fracturing issues within this area of knowledge. O PERFORMA’17 e V Congresso da ABRAPEM - evento realizado na Universidade Federal de São João del-Rei, MG – UFSJ, de 05 a 08 de junho de 2017 - resulta da parceria entre a ABRAPEM e o Pólo de Aveiro do INET-md e tem como tema central a Performance Musical na Teoria e na Prática: novas perspectivas no ensino, pesquisa e performance no século XXI. Entre os objectivos gerais deste evento procura-se criar oportunidades de discussão e debate qualificado sobre a Performance Musical como campo de produção artística e científica frente aos desafios surgidos nas últimas décadas, promover a reflexão e a troca de informações sobre as perspectivas da pesquisa e do ensino da Performance Musical, colaborar para a divulgação da produção artística e científica, proporcionar uma mostra do cenário da pesquisa em performance musical, e contribuir para a consolidação da pesquisa nesta importante subárea. O Livro de atas desta conferência internacional que ora se publica está organizado por ordem alfabética, aplicada aos nomes dos primeiros autores. PERFORMA’17 and the 5th ABRAPEM Congress - which is taking place from the 5th to the 8th of June 2017, at the Universidade Federal de São João del-Rei, MG-UFSJ - is the result of the partnership between ABRAPEM and the Aveiro branch of INET-md, and it will focus on the theme of Musical Performance in Theory and in Practice: new perspectives on teaching, research and performance for the 21st century. The congress aims to stimulate discussion and debate on Musical Performance as a field of artistic and academic production, in light of the challenges which have arisen over the past decades, to promote a reflection and an exchange of knowledge about the perspectives of research and teaching Musical Performance, to collaborate in the dissemination of artistic and academic production, to create a display of the research on musical performance, and to contribute to the consolidation of research in this important sub-area. ‘Hands on’ PIANO is a meeting dedicated to the piano. It is a unique event due to the symbiosis between two types of meetings: the convention type, of an artistic nature, focusing on a specific musical instrument, and the traditional type of academic research conference, but focusing on a specific instrumental area. ‘Hands on’ PIANO aims to bridge the gap between artistic production and academic research, creating opportunities to combine artists’ and researchers’ knowledge, for mutual benefit. Research ‘Hands on’ PIANO é um encontro dedicado à área instrumental do Piano, cuja particularidade está no facto de fazer a simbiose entre dois tipos de encontros: a Convenção de cunho artístico à volta de um determinado instrumento e a Conferência de investigação Académica tradicional, mas circunscrita a esta área instrumental. Pretende-se provocar um confronto e uma partilha de um modo mais estreito entre produção artística e Investigação, criando oportunidades para que os saberes de artistas e de investigadores se possam cruzar com benefícios óbvios para ambas as partes. published

Hands-On Research Symposium aims to stimulate the discussion of ideas, practices, insights, outputs and developments in the field of artistic research. Originally conceptualised as a series of meetings focused on specific instrumental areas bridging the gap between artistic production and academic research, thus creating opportunities to combine artists’ and researchers’ knowledge, Hands-On Research has now expanded to encompass all artistic areas and will feature paper presentations, lecture-performances, round-table discussions and concerts. published

Defining artistic research in a concise and unequivocal way seems to be as difficult as establishing boundaries and rules with which to frame it. Possibly because of this, some authors have been more interested in discussing when research can be considered artistic research than in proposing a clear-cut definition (Klein, 2017). In line with this point of view, this proposal represents an effort to launch the ground stones upon which an alternative path for Artistic Research may develop. Instead of an assertive, closed definition of Artistic Research, we are, in this first Cahier, launching the foundations on which to build, in the following Cahiers, a set of premises and principles - prolegomena - aimed at guiding the development of research projects. This alternative pathway will gradually progress along with (and because of) the growing set of research projects departing from these premises and principles. But first, we would like to highlight a number of introductory points, using examples, in the hope of further clarifying this matter. published
