Purpose: The infant mortality rate is a key indicator of human welfare and development. However, in Colombia, the Departamento Administrativo Nacional de Estadística has set the registered rate for 2009 as 13.69 per 1,000 live births, while the estimated rate is 20.13, suggesting the presence of inconsistencies in the data, as in many other transitional economies. This paper aims to set the record straight on Colombia's Infant mortality rate reporting since 1980 by using all available data that have recently become public. Methods: The study analyzes 8,636,510 records of live births (1998-2009) and 443,338 records of deaths (1979-2009), and considers information from all available sources: births and death registries, census data, Departamento Administrativo Nacional de Estadística, and Profamilia surveys. First, following a descriptive analysis, an exponential function is used to estimate the Infant mortality rates in Colombia for 1980-2009 while resolving internal inconsistencies in the data from all sources. The objective is to evaluate the infant mortality rate in Colombia, 1980-2009. Results: The analysis demonstrates that the registered and the estimated rates for 2009 are incompatible since they follow inconsistent long-term rates of decline in Infant mortality rate. While the registered rate underestimates the real situation, the estimated rate appears to grossly overestimate it. Analyses, based on other sources, put the Infant mortality rate between 15.81 and 17.58 in 2009, with rates of decline between 3.0 and 5.0 percent for the period 1980-2009. Conclusions: The study concludes that during the period 1980-2009, the Infant mortality rate for Colombia on average fell from about 54 to about 17, suggesting a long-term annual rate of decline of about 4.0 percent. Young creators, designers, and master artisans are reinventing craftsmanship with their freshness and daring and turning it into a laboratory for sensory, emotional, and symbolic experiences. This paper will present artisans’ organizational status in the development of such a profession or craft in the municipalities that are part of the northern region of Valle del Cauca (Colombia). For this purpose, we resorted to documentary analysis and inquiries with stakeholders to characterize the region socially and demographically, for its geographical location, and identifying comparative and competitive advantages in the territory, according to the productive vocation of the municipalities and their relationship with crafts production. Likewise, the research analyzes artisans’ capabilities as a dynamizing sector for social, economic, and organizational processes. This study is a preliminary approach because its results are inconclusive, thus allowing other researchers to develop into the importance of the artisanal sector for the socio-economic development of the northern region of Valle del Cauca. The strategic approaches outlined in this paper are those consolidated with the stakeholders, who have enabled the craft sector’s strengthening through innovative proposals regarding the management of their workshops and business units.

In Colombia, research about peace building from the perspective of women is scarce, and even more so in the specificity of rural women in spite of the fact that many of these experiences take place in rural areas. This paper presents a literature review and an analysis covering three fields: 1) the discussion about women’s social movement for peace; 2) the contributions of women to the construction of peace from particular contexts and 3) the participation of women in processes of peace. Subsequently, the paper expounds the principal theoretical, conceptual and methodological findings. Finally, the conclusions section ratifies the lack of investigations that reflect theoretically and analytically about the triad peace buildingwomen-rurality as an effective way to understand the national and reality. This situation implies an important group of challenges that invites us to delve deeper into this field, specially given the current panorama of the peace accord.

The Colombian economy has a strong dependence on the export of commodities. Different studies show that the prices of these products are exogenous, which have originated direct effects on the national economic activity. Therefore, this paper studies the shock effects produced by mining and energy commodity price variations like oil, coal and nickel on Colombian economy. We used 129 variables for 2001-2016 period and estimated a FAVAR model (Factor Augmented VAR) to observe commodity price effects on different economic aggregates, the results show that price fluctuations have significant effects on variables such as economic activity, investment, the trade balance, the real exchange rate and external debt.

Over the last decade, the concepts of corporate responsibility and the notion of sustainable development have been widely disseminated both in the circles of both researchers and professionals in management. The purpose of this paper is to propose some elements of clarification with regard to these two concepts and in relation to the current context. This article includes three parts. First, it introduces a historical and conceptual evolution of the concept of corporate responsibility. Second, it maps an explanation of the current spread of this concept and identifies the linkages between dimensions of sustainable development and corporate responsibility. Finally, it proposes some ideas in relation to research on corporate responsibility in the specific context of Colombia.

Abstract In this paper we study the spatial dimension of intra-urban labor informality, taking the city of Medellin, Colombia, as a case study. Based on regression models with spatial dependence, the main factors that determine this phenomenon are studied. The results show that there are evident spatial patterns of intra-urban labor informality in Medellín, whose social segmentation regarding quality of employment, education, employment opportunities and housing conditions is evident between the north and south of the city. It was also found that a higher percentage of both women and precarious housing increases the levels of labor informality. On the contrary, the variables associated with education and modern employment have a negative effect on this phenomenon.

ABSTRACT: Objectives: Liver transplantation is the treatment of choice for acute and chronic liver failure, for selected cases of tumors, and for conditions resulting from errors in metabolism. This paper reports the experience of a medical center in Latin America. Methods: Were conducted 305 orthotopic liver transplantations on 284 patients between 2004 and 2010. Of these patients, 241 were adults undergoing their first transplantation. Results: The average age of patients was 52 years old, and 62% of the individuals were male. The most common indication was alcoholic cirrhosis. The rate of patient survival after 1 and 5 years was 82 and 72% respectively. The rate of liver graft survival after 1 and 5 years was 78 and 68% respectively. The main cause of death was sepsis. Complications in the hepatic artery were documented for 5% of the patients. Additionally, 14.5% of the patients had complications in the biliary tract. Infections were found in 41% of the individuals. Acute rejection was observed in 30% of the subjects, and chronic rejection in 3%. Conclusion: In conclusion, liver transplantation at our medical center in Colombia offers good mid-term results, with a complication rate similar to that reported by other centers around the world. Introduction: Phlebotomine sand flies are biological vectors of bacteria, protozoa and viruses attacking both human beings and animals. Sand flies are important since females have haematophagous habits and transmit various types of leishmaniases. In Colombia different studies have given the geographic distribution of these insects. This paper reports the finding of species in several localities and includes some places with no previous records. Material and methods: Specimens were captured while attempting to bite on collectors and with traps (light bait and animal bait). Other specimens were trapped in resting places. Sand flies were processed with different techniques regularly used for dissecting and mounting them for species identification. Results: From the study of 716 specimens, 124 males and 592 females, of the genus Lutzomyia in 46 places from 29 municipalities, in 11 departments (= states, provinces) it was possible to identify 33 species. Discussion: The geographic distribution of the genus Lutzomyia is being greatly extended to new Colombian localities. The importance of some anthropophilic species as vectors of diseases, mainly leishmaniases is discussed. The necessity of systematic and taxonomic studies to know the role of these insects in the transmission of pathologies affecting humans is emphasized.
