Ondas internas são movimentos ondulatórios que ocorrem no interior da coluna de água, associadas à estratificação de densidade. Ondas internas cuja frequência de oscilação se assemelha à das marés são chamadas marés internas. Estas ocasionam escoamentos intensos que influenciam a dinâmica de sedimentos, os processos de mistura e a produtividade primária. Em um ambiente energético como a Plataforma Continental Amazônica (PCA), localizada na costa norte brasileira, a estratificação varia consideravelmente, tanto espacial quanto temporalmente, de acordo com o balanço entre as diversas forçantes presentes. Na região da PCA alguns autores sugerem a presença de marés internas, entretanto, estudos específicos acerca do tema não figuram na literatura. Dessa forma, desenvolvemos neste trabalho um estudo da maré interna na região da PCA. Como objetivo, procuramos comprovar a ocorrência de marés internas na PCA, caracterizar seu comportamento e verificar sua intermitência. Para tal foram realizadas análises de dados provenientes do programa AMASSedS (A Multidisciplinary Amazon Shelf Sediment Study). Para caracterizar as marés internas, aplicamos dois métodos distintos para obtenção do campo baroclínico. O primeiro foi fundamentado no estabelecimento de uma corrente barotrópica préviamente obtida atráves de simulações numéricas. O segundo método empregado embasou-se na aplicação das funções empíricas ortogonais para a separação em modos estatísticos. Verificamos que as ondas internas na PCA estão ligadas à vazão do Rio Amazonas e são observadas, principalmente, na frequência semi-diurna. Aparentemente, as marés internas semi-diurnas influenciam não somente a hidrodinâmica da PCA como também são responsáveis por parte da variabilidade da salinidade próximo à superfície. Internal waves are oscillatory motions that occur within the density stratified ocean. The ones with tidal frequency are then called internal tides or baroclinic tides, and are, on several locations around the planet, responsible for strong fluxes that affect several processes, like sediment transport, mixing processes and primary production. In such a strong environment as the Amazon Continental Shelf (ACS), located at the northern brazilian coast, it\'s stratification changes considerably with time and space, accordingly with the balance between the several forcing variables present. In this region, some authors suggest that internal tides occur, however, none research have been made about it on the ACS. That being said, we propose a study on internal tides on the ACS. As we hypothesize that internal tides occur, we look forward to characterize it\'s behavior and verify it\'s intermittency on the ACS. To do so, the data collected during the AMASSedS project (A Multidisciplinary Amazon Shelf Sediment Study) is going to be analyzed. In order to characterize it, two different method were applied to obtain the baroclinic field. The first method was the definition of a modeled-based barotropic current of the ACS obtained on the literature. The second method was the application of Empirical Orthogonal Functions in order to split the field on statistical modes of variability and analyze them separately. Our results indicate that internal tides on the ACS occur preferentially on the semi-diurnal frequency and it\'s generation is intimately connected to river discharge. Also, the analysis of the salinity anomaly field indicates that internal tides are responsible for part of the variability of the later on the surface on mid-shelf.

A circulação sazonal da Plataforma Continental Leste Brasileira (PCLB) entre 10oS e 16oS é investigada com base em um inédito conjunto de dados in situ e em modelagem hidrodinâmica. Os dados observados possibilitaram a compreensão da dinâmica da circulação em partes específicas da região de estudo e a sua interação com os diversos mecanismos forçantes, ilustrando a forte influência da circulação atmosférica e oceânica de meso/larga escalas, de processos transientes e da topografia local, na circulação regional, apresentando cenários distintos entre as estações do ano. Os resultados da modelagem hidrodinâmica não só complementaram os estudos observacionais, como também permitiram uma maior compreensão da variabilidade sazonal e espaço-temporal da circulação na PCLB, assim como a sua interação com os diversos mecanismos forçantes, para uma região mais ampla (10oS-16oS). A PCLB é fortemente afetada pela sazonalidade de larga escala do regime dos ventos alísios e da latitude da Zona de Convergência Intertropical (ZCIT). Seguindo esta dinâmica, durante as estações de primavera/verão, as correntes na Plataforma Continental (PC) ao sul de 12oS ficam sujeitas a ventos preferenciais de E-NE e, no oceano, a bifurcação da Corrente Sul Equatorial (bSEC) atinge a sua posição mais ao norte (~13oS em novembro). Nas regiões da quebra da PC e do talude continental, as correntes são também influenciadas pelas Correntes de Contorno Oeste (CCO). No domínio norte (10oS), a circulação na PC interna é para sul, seguindo o campo de ventos preferencial, enquanto a circulação na PC média e na quebra da PC é mais influenciada pelas correntes na região do talude continental, que são claramente dominadas pela dinâmica da Corrente Norte do Brasil/Sub-Corrente Norte do Brasil (CNB/SCNB). No domínio central (14oS), embora a circulação seja de certa forma similar à observada para o domínio norte, a circulação no talude continental apresenta uma maior variabilidade como resposta à presença dos fluxos contrários da Corrente do Brasil (CB) e da SCNB. A circulação no domínio sul (16oS) possui uma clara divisão ao longo da PC/talude continental, apresentando um intenso e organizado fluxo direcionado para sul na PC interna e média, como resposta à forçante remota do vento, e uma circulação polarizada na direção perpendicular à costa nas regiões da quebra da PC/talude continental, sugerindo uma associação com a CCO e com a topografia local do Banco Royal Charlotte. Durante as estações de outono/inverno, seguindo o regime sazonal dos ventos alísios e da latitude da ZCIT, a PC ao norte de ~20oS fica sujeita a ventos preferenciais de E-SE e as correntes sofrem uma reversão do fluxo médio, e a bCSE atinge seu limite sul (~17oS em julho). A circulação na PC interna e média no domínio norte durante estas estações, apresenta um fraco fluxo para norte com uma alta variabilidade. Enquanto na PC interna esta variabilidade está relacionada à entrada mais frequente de frentes frias, na PC média está relacionada com a circulação na região do talude continental. A circulação nesta região possui uma alta correlação com aquela na região da quebra da PC e ambas apresentam um fluxo médio para norte mais intenso e menos variável, que pode estar relacionado com o fluxo da CNB/SCNB, que ocupa toda a região do talude continental durante estas estações do ano. O fluxo médio para norte no domínio central, apresenta uma fraca intensidade e alta variabilidade nas regiões da PC interna e média e na quebra da PC, que pode estar relacionada com o aumento da frequência de sistemas frontais, ao fato desta região ser influenciada pela bifurcação do fluxo médio em superfície e, para a região da quebra da PC, à variabilidade da SCNB, que apresenta maiores episódios em que ocupa esta região. A CNB/SCNB exerce uma clara influência na circulação da região do talude continental. A circulação no domínio sul é principalmente gerada pelo vento remoto nas regiões da PC interna e média, enquanto nas regiões da quebra da PC e talude continental apresenta uma significativa influência da CCO. The seasonal circulation of the Eastern Brazilian Shelf (EBS) between 10oS and 16oS is investigated based on original in situ data sets and hydrodynamic modeling. The observational data provided an understanding of the circulation dynamics within specific parts of the the study region and its interaction with the various forcing mechanisms, illustrating the strong influence of the large/meso scales atmospheric and oceanic circulation, transient processes and local topography on the regional circulation, presenting very distinct scenarios between seasons. The hydrodynamic modeling results not only complemented the observational studies but also allowed for a broader understanding of the seasonality and time-space variability of the EBS circulation, as well as its interaction with the various forcing mechanisms, in a wider region (10oS-16oS). The EBS is highly affected by large-scale seasonality in the trade wind regime and the latitude of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ). Following this dynamics, during the spring/summer seasons, the currents within the continental shelf south of 12oS are influenced by preferential E-NE winds and, in the ocean, the bifurcation of the South Equatorial Current (bSEC) reaches its northernmost position (~13oS in November). At the shelf break and slope region, the currents are also influenced by the Western Boundary Currents (WBC). At the northern domain (10oS) the inner shelf circulation is to the south following the preferential winds, while the circulation at the mid shelf and shelf break is more influence by the currents at the slope, which are clearly dominated by the North Brazil Current/North Brazil Undercurrent (NBC/NBUC) dynamics. At the central region (14oS), although the circulation is somehow similar to that observed for the northern domain, the slope circulation presents a greater variability in response to the presence of the opposing Brazil Current (BC) and NBUC flow. At the southern domain (16oS) the circulation has a clear division along the continental shelf/slope regions, presenting an intense and organized southward flow at the inner and mid shelves, as a response to the remote wind forcing, and a polarized cross-shelf circulation at the shelf break/slope region, suggesting an association with the WBC and the local topography of the Royal Charlotte Bank. During the autumn/winter seasons, following the seasonal regime of the trade winds and the latitude of the ITCZ, the continental shelf north of ~20oS are influenced by preferential E-SE winds and the currents experience a reversal of the mean flow, and the bSEC reaches its southernmost position (~17oS in July). The circulation during these seasons at the northern domain inner and mid shelves presents a weak northward flow with a strong variability. While at the inner shelf this variability is related to the more frequent cold front passages at the mid shelf it is related to the slope region circulation. The circulation at this region has a high correlation with the circulation at the shelf break and both present a less variable and more intense northward net flow which could be related to the NBC/NBUC flow, that occupies the entire slope region during these seasons. The northward net flow at the central domain presents a weak intensity and high variability at the inner/mid shelves and shelf break regions, which could be related to the increase in the cold fronts frequency, to the fact that this region is under the influence of the bifurcation of the surface net flow and, for the shelf break region, to the NBUC variability which presents more episodes that occupies this region. At the slope region the NBC/NBUC exerts a clear influence in the circulation. The circulation at the southern domain is mainly driven by the remote wind forcing at the inner and mid shelves, while at the shelf break/slope regions presents a significant WBC influence.

A Corrente do Brasil é formada na bifurcação do ramo sul da Corrente Sul Equatorial e flui meridionalmente para sul ao largo das costas leste, sudeste e sul do Brasil, apresentando intensa atividade de mesoescala entre a Cadeia Vitória-Trindade (20oS) e o Cabo de Santa Marta Grande (28oS). O conhecimento de tal atividade, construído ao longo do tempo, se refere principalmente aos meandros e vórtices frontais, sendo os vórtices de borda na configuração de dipolos vorticais relatados apenas através de imagens AVHRR. Dessa forma, objetivamos caracterizar a estrutura dinâmica de um dipolo vortical, observado na Bacia de Santos, a partir de dados quase-sinóticos de velocidade e hidrográficos oriundos do Cruzeiro Dinâmica do Ecossistema da Plataforma da Região Oeste do Atlântico Sul V. O mapeamento objetivo das estruturas capturadas pela grade amostral quase-sinótica do cruzeiro foi o ponto de partida para a descrição do dipolo e avaliação de sua geostrofia. Os campos de função de corrente apresentaram um padrão clássico de dipolo vortical, com vórtices ciclônico e anticiclônico posicionados em lados opostos ao eixo da corrente, que se enfraquece após a estrutura. Em média, o diâmetro de ambos os vórtices ficou em torno de 110 km, em seus maiores eixos. Em seguida, como o número de Rossby máximo foi de 0,27, para avançar nas questões dinâmicas envolvendo a estrutura, aproximamos o oceano a um modelo quase-geostrófico de 11/2-camadas derivado das observações e dinamicamente calibrado. A análise dos campos modelados, utilizando o número de Burger, revelou que a vorticidade relativa compete com a vorticidade de estiramento pela dinâmica do sistema. Ao compararmos os campos modelados de função de corrente e vorticidade potencial, observamos que o dipolo e o escoamento da CB não se encontram em um cenário estacionário. Finalmente, evidências de retroalimentação mútua entre os vórtices do dipolo foram obtidas através da interação entre o campo de função de corrente de uma estrutura com o campo de vorticidade potencial da outra. Logo, concluímos que o dipolo capturado encontrava-se em processo de crescimento barotrópico. The Brazil Current (BC) is formed at the bifurcation of the southern branch of the South Equatorial Current and flows south-southeastward off the east, southeast and southern Brazilian continental margin, exhibiting intense meso-scale activity between the Vitória-Trindade Ridge (20oS) and Cape Santa Marta Grande (28oS). The knowledge of such activity, built over time, refers mainly to the frontal meanders and eddies. The edge vortical structures as a dipole configuration are reported only through AVHRR images. Thus, we aimed to characterize the dynamical structure of a BC vortical dipole, observed in the Santos Basin, with a quasi-synoptic velocity (vessel-mounted ADCP) and hydrographic (CTD) dataset from DEPROAS V cruise. The objective mapping of structures captured by the cruise sampling grid was the departing point for the description of the dipole and evaluation of its degree of geostrophy. The fields of the stream function showed a classic pattern of a dipole with cyclonic and anticyclonic eddies positioned on opposite sides of the current axis. On average, the diameter of the two eddies was around 110 km in their largest axes. Then, as the Rossby number was 0.27, we advanced in investigating the issues involving the dynamic structure by we approximating the ocean to a 11/2 layer quasi-geostrofic model derived from the observations and dynamically calibrated. Burger number revealed that both relative and stretching vorticity were competing for the dynamics of the system. The comparison between the modeled stream function and potential vorticity fields showed that both the dipole and the BC flow were not in a stationary state. Finally, evidences of reinforcement between the eddies of the dipole were obtained through the interaction between the field of the stream function of vortical structure with the field of potential vorticity of the other one, and vice-versa. Therefore, we conclude that the dipole were in a barotropic growth process.

A Corrente do Brasil (CB) se origina na bifurcac¸ ao da Corrente Sul Equatorial (BiCSE), e flui para o sul ao longo da margem continental brasileira. Inferencias sobre a origem e organizac¸ ao da CB sao baseadas em padroes de grande escala associados `a estrutura da BiCSE. H´a carencia de detalhes no que tange `a rica atividade de mesoescala possivelmente envolvida em seu processo de formac¸ ao. Sao fartas as evidencias de meandros e v´ ortices da CB na literatura ao largo das costas sudeste e sul do Brasil. A costa leste, que abriga seu s´tio de origem, permanece ainda bastante desconhecida neste ponto de vista. Motivamo-nos por esta lacuna de informac¸ oes a conduzir este trabalho. Optamos primeiramente por estimar um cen´ario m´edio do escoamento geostr ´ofico associado a BiCSE e origem da CB no per´odo de verao, atrav´es de um conjunto de dados termohalinos climatol´ogicos. Objetivamos por fim, obter uma descric¸ ao sin´ otica do escoamento geostr´ofico associado ao s´tio de origem da CB. Para tanto, dispomos de um conjunto de dados composto por amostragem quase-sin´ otica de dados termohalinos (via CTD) e de velocidade (via ADCP de casco) simultaneamente, entre os paralelos de 10S e 20S. Tais observac¸ oes sao oriundas da Operac¸ ao Oceano Leste II (OEII), realizada pela Marinha do Brasil em marc¸o de 2005. Conduzimos a investigac¸ ao a partir de um m´etodo cient´fico que entendemos nao ter sido ainda empregado para os escoamentos ao largo da costa brasileira. Tal m´etodo consiste no M´etodo Dinamico Referenciado, que combina dados termohalinos e de velocidades observadas para estimar velocidades geostr´oficas absolutas, que sao livres da dependencia de um n´vel de movimento nulo imposto pelo M´etodo Dinamico Cl´assico. Este m´etodo substitui o n´vel de movimento nulo por um n´vel de velocidades conhecidas, que correspondem `as velocidades medidas diretamente pelo ADCP de casco. Encontramos para o cen´ario climatol ´ogico de verao, a assinatura da BiCSE em 9S para superf´cie, em 12S para 200 m, vi em 20S para 500 m e em 23S para 800 m. Confirmamos informac¸ oes da literatura sobre sua migrac¸ ao meridional com o aumento da profundidade. Identificamos tamb´em o cen´ario m´edio de origem e organizac¸ ao da CB e da Sub-corrente Norte do Brasil (SNB) nos n´veis citados, os quais subsidiarao a an´alise dos campos sin´ oticos. Os campos sin´oticos confirmaram os resultados m´edios da climatologia. Em superf´cie, nao observamos sinais da BiCSE no interior da ´area de estudo, e mostramos que na ocasiao da OEII, a CB se origina ao norte de 10S e comec¸a sua organizac¸ ao ainda distante da margem continental. Em 150 m, identificamos a assinatura da BiCSE em 14,5S, e em 500 m, em 20S. Sugerimos entao que a origem da CB enquanto corrente de contorno oeste, fluindo junto `a margem continental leste brasileira, se localiza em 14,5S. Concluindo, a CB se organiza ao norte de 10S e flui distante da margem continental como uma corrente fraca e rasa, atingindo no m´aximo os 100 primeiros metros de profundidade. Esta corrente atinge o contorno oeste em 14,5S e flui em direc¸ ao ao sul seguindo as isobatim´etricas. Ao longo deste caminho, apresenta meandros vigorosos, em particular, anticiclones. Estes anticiclones parecem estar associados a feic¸ oes topogr´aficas relevantes da ´area tais quais os Bancos de Royal Charlotte e de Abrolhos. As velocidades da CB aumentam em intensidade e a corrente ganha espessura vertical at´e 20S. A SNB parece se originar em 20S, com n´ ucleo situado em 700 m. Esta corrente segue viagem rumo ao norte de forma que seu n´ ucleo se torna cada vez mais raso, e suas velocidades cada vez maiores, at´e deixar o dom´nio em 10S. Nesta latitude, seu n´ ucleo se localiza a 250 m de profundidade. The origin of Brazil Current (BC) is associated with the bifurcation of the South Equatorial Current (BiSEC). The BC then flows south bordering the Brazilian continental margin. However, inferences on the BC origin site as well as its organization as a western boundary current are based in large scale patterns of the BiSEC. It lacks details on the location of the BC and the possible mesoscale activity related to its formation. While the BC meandering off the Southeastern and Southern Brazilian continental margin has been widely reported in the literature, no information is available for the BC structure and its meanders off the Brazilian Eastern margin. The motivation and main goal of this work is to describe the mesoscale scenario associated with the BC formation and organization as a boundary current. In order to reach this goal, we opted to first build a climatological geostrophic picture of the BiSEC and BC origin for the summer using solely temperature-salinity data. Following such investigation, we analyzed data from an oceanographic cruise conducted by the Brazilian Navy that consisted of simultaneous CTD profiling and vessel-mounted ADCP velocity measurements, also for the summer period. The quasi-synoptic data analysis was conducted using a method that has not been employed for flows along the Brazilian continental margin: the ADCP-referenced dynamic method. Unlike the traditional dynamic method, ADCP velocities are used to reference the CTD-derived baroclinic velocities and to obtain a total geostrophic velocity field. In the climatological data analysis, the relative geostrophic current patterns exhibited a BiSEC signature at 9S for surface, at 12S for 200 m, at 20S for 500 m and 23S for 800 m. We thus confirmed information of the literature about the southward migration of the BiSEC structure with depth. We also identified the summer mean scenario for the BC and North Brazil Undercurrent (NBUC) formation. The quasi-synoptic total velocity fields confirmed the relative cliviii matological fields. At surface, we found no signature of the BiSEC within the cruise sampled area. The BC was originated north of 10S and seemed to start flowing, as a weak current with vertical extension less than 100 m deep, distant from the western boundary. At 150 m (500 m), the BiSEC signature was evident at 14.5S (20S). We thus suggest that the synoptic BC origin as a western boundary current was located at around 14.5S. We can summarize our findings describing that the BC organized itself as a weak and shallow current at around 10S. At 14.5S, the BC attached itself to the continental margin and flew following the bathymetric contours. As it flows south, it meandered vigorously and frontal anticyclones were present off the main topographic features of the Eastern coast: the Royal Charlotte and the Abrolhos Banks. In its path southward, the BC was intensified and extended vertically. It seemed that NBUC was originated at around 20S with a velocity core centered at 700 m. As this undercurrent flows northward, it increased transport and its velocity core became shallower. At the northern portion of the study area, the NBUC core reached the depth of 250 m.
