Estudos recentes já têm sinalizado a importância em aprofundar as investigações de como a economia circular pode ser impulsionada pelos ecossistemas. Considerando os ecossistemas circulares, o setor de alimentos orgânicos possui relevância uma vez que, além de apresentar demanda crescente em todo o mundo, visa produzir alimentos de uma maneira ambientalmente amigável, preservando a saúde do solo, do meio ambiente e dos consumidores. Visando contribuir com este tema, este trabalho teve como objetivo investigar como os atores presentes em um ecossistema de alimentos orgânicos podem construir e orquestrar ecossistemas circulares. Para isso, foram identificados e analisados em um ecossistema de alimentos orgânicos: (i) os seus atores e o papel de cada um deles; (ii) as principais formas de colaboração; (iii) as formas de governança entre eles; e (iv) as principais barreiras enfrentadas nessas relações. Como método de pesquisa, adotou-se o procedimento qualitativo realizado por meio de um estudo de caso realizado com os seguintes atores que compõem o ecossistema de alimentos orgânicos concentrados, sobretudo, na região de Botucatu, SP: associação, agricultores, empresa produtora de orgânicos, instituto de fomento e clientes. Dentre os principais resultados, observou-se a importância do orquestrador de rede, responsável por difundir informações técnicas e de mercado, além de reunir e coordenar os atores do ecossistema investigado. Notou-se também a convergência de objetivos entre os atores do ecossistema em direção aos princípios da produção orgânica, os quais são alinhados com aqueles propostos pela economia circular. A relação de confiança entre os atores do ecossistema mostrou-se também como elemento facilitador para a colaboração e a troca de recursos tangíveis e intangíveis entre os membros do ecossistema. Although the circular economy has been intensively studied in recent years, not only in Brazil, but in the world, few studies have addressed this topic in the face of circular ecosystems. Recent studies have highlighted the importance of further research into how the circular economy can be driven by ecosystems. Considering circular ecosystems, the organic food sector is relevant, since besides the growing demand for its products around the world, it aims to produce food in an environmentally friendly way. Preserving, therefore, the health of the soil, the environment, and the consumers. To contribute to the topic, this work aimed to investigate how actors present in an organic food ecosystem can build and orchestrate circular ecosystems. To this end, it was identified and analyzed in an organic food ecosystem: (i) its actors and the role of each them; (ii) the main forms of collaboration; (iii) the forms of governance between them; and finally (iv) the main barriers faced in these relationships. As a research method, it was adopted the qualitative procedure carried out through a case study with the following actors that compose the organic food ecosystem, concentrated mainly in the region of Botucatu, SP: association, producers, organic company, funding institute and customers. Among the main results, it was observed the importance of the orchestrator, which is responsible for disseminating technical and market information, in addition coordinate the actors of the investigated ecosystem. It was also noted the convergence of objectives among ecosystem actors towards the fundamentals of organic production, which are aligned with the principles proposed by the circular economy. The trust relationship between ecosystem actors also proved to be a facilitating element for collaboration and for the exchange of tangible and intangible resources among the ecosystem members.

Em condições de limitação hídrica, os agricultores reduzem a área cultivada ou o aporte de água para os cultivos, o que resulta em decréscimos de produção ou de produtividade. Nessas condições, deve-se aplicar as normas de manejo de irrigação deficitária, dentre as quais a produtividade da cultura é reduzida em determinado grau pela redução da lâmina de irrigação aplicada, porém é mantida a renda líquida positiva. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a marcha de absorção e o efeito do estresse hídrico nos componentes de produção e produtividade do amendoim na segunda safra em Jaboticabal, SP. Os experimentos foram conduzidos de março a agosto de 2019 e de março a agosto de 2020 na Universidade Estatual Paulista (UNESP), em Jaboticabal, SP. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos casualizados com cinco tratamentos e quatro repetições. Os tratamentos consistiram em cinco níveis de irrigação deficitária, L1, L2, L3, L4 e L5, correspondentes às reposições de 100%, 89%, 56%, 29% e 10% do consumo hídrico da cultura (evapotranspiração menos precipitação). As produtividades máximas dos experimentos variaram de 3.5 a 3.9 t ha-1, sendo superior à média da região na entressafra, demostrando que o manejo da irrigação é uma opção para os agricultores produzirem de forma satisfatória. Temperaturas sub-ótimas alongaram o ciclo de cultivo e reduziram a produtividade da cultura em cerca 33%, em decorrência do menor crescimento da planta. As produtividades máximas foram obtidas sob lâminas totais de 250 a 330 mm, resultando em produtividade da água entre 1 e 2 kg m-3. Maiores demandas nutricionais do amendoim ocorreram dos 63 aos 105 dias após a semeadura. Os maiores acúmulos totais estimados ocorreram dos 118 aos 147 dias após a semeadura (DAS), com 234,8; 173,5; 79; 45,8; 23,4; 18,8 para N, K, Ca, Mg, P e S, respectivamente. Water stress is considered the most critical environmental factor for peanut farming in the state of São Paulo, especially in the second harvest, from February to June. Under water-limited conditions, farmers reduce the cultivated area or the supply of water for crops, which results in a decrease in production or productivity. Under these conditions, the rules for managing deficit irrigation must be applied, among which the crop productivity is reduced to a certain degree by the reduction of the applied irrigation depth, but the positive net income is maintained. The objective of this work was to evaluate the absorption rate and the effect of water stress on the production and yield components of peanut crop in off season in the northeast region of the State of São Paulo, Brazil. The experiments were carried out from March to August 2019 and from March to August 2020 at UNESP, in Jaboticabal, SP. The experimental design was in randomized blocks with five treatments and four replications. The treatments consisted of five levels of deficit irrigation, L1, L2, L3, L4 and L5, corresponding to replacements of 100%, 89%, 56%, 29% and 10% of the crop water consumption (evapotranspiration less precipitation). The maximum yields of the experiments ranged from 3,5 to 3,9 kg ha-1, being higher than the region average in the off-season, demonstrating that irrigation management is an option for farmers to produce satisfactorily. Suboptimal temperatures lengthened the growing cycle and reduced crop yield in about 33%, due to the lower plant growth. The maximum yields were obtained under total depths of 250 to 330 mm, resulting in water productivity between 1 and 2 kg m3. Greater nutritional demands of the peanut tree occurred from 63 to 105 days after sowing. O efeito de fertilização por CO2 (dióxido de C) pode, eventualmente, manter a produtividade e a biomassa florestal nas próximas décadas, evitando ou adiando a suposta descaracterização florestal na região. A resposta da floresta amazônica aos efeitos diretos e indiretos do CO2 elevado é, contudo, incerta. Principalmente em virtude de duas características importantes, até aqui não consideradas conjuntamente em experimentos realizados com modelos de vegetação: o papel potencialmente limitante do nitrogênio e do fósforo (N e P) sobre o efeito de fertilização por CO2 e as possíveis alterações de composição funcional comunidades vegetais sob diferentes regimes de estresse e perturbação originadas pelas mudanças climáticas. Este estudo apresenta uma abordagem de modelagem de ecossistemas terrestres baseada em processos ecofisiológicos e na biodiversidade de formas e funções vegetais, representada pela alta variabilidade de atributos funcionais de plantas. Considerando os ciclos do nitrogênio e fósforo acoplados ao ciclo de carbono, numa combinação inovadora de características de modelagem dinâmica de ecossistemas terrestres. O novo modelo foi aplicado para a simulação dos ecossistemas da Pan-amazônia num período climatológico e histórico recente (1979-2016) e em um teste de sensibilidade envolvendo variações na temperatura, precipitação, concentração de CO2 e nutrientes (N e P). A simulação histórica foi comparada com dados de referência em um processo de avaliação biogeoquímica, baseada em um protocolo de amplo uso na modelagem de ecossistemas terrestres. A simulação histórica e os dados gerados no teste de sensibilidade foram a base para o desenvolvimento de um método de análise funcional multidimensional que foi utilizado aqui para identificar com precisão importantes interações entre a composição funcional da vegetação simulada e os processos ecossistêmicos sob as diferentes condições ambientais simuladas. Os resultados dos testes de sensibilidade foram comparados qualitativamente a resultados de experimentos de manipulação dos recursos e variáveis climáticas. Finalmente, sob a luz das análises anteriores, uma análise detalhada da simulação histórica foi realizada, buscando esclarecer os efeitos diversos na vegetação, que são causados pelo aumento do stress hídrico, da temperatura e da concentração atmosférica de CO2 entre 1979 e 2016. A combinação de maior diversidade funcional e dos ciclos de N e P acoplados ao ciclo de C em um modelo dinâmico de vegetação revelou interações importantes entre composição funcional da área simulada e o complexo balanço entre assimilação de C e respiração autotrófica, que em última instância compõem o principal controle sobre a biomassa em ecossistemas terrestres. Adicionalmente, um resultado relevante não previsto no plano inicial é apresentado: um conjunto de mapas e uma análise sobre as diferentes formas químicas de P nos solos da área de estudo. The Amazon Forest dieback hypothesis was postulated in early 2000, and many studies suggested that a future climate induced dieback of the Amazon Forest was a real possibility. However, the CO2 fertilization effect may possibly enhance forest productivity and biomass for decades to come, phasing out the projected forest loss. The response of the Amazon Forest to elevated CO2 effects is however uncertain. Two important features that have not been considered in vegetation model projections: (1) the potentially limiting role of nutrients, namely, nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P), on the CO2 fertilization effect and (2) the possibility of interspecific response variation (i.e., changes in community composition). For example, different plant growth/surviving strategies are likely to differ in their responses to climate change and elevated CO2 more than they differ in terms of effects on ecosystem processes and state. Changes at the community level can have cascading effects on ecosystems and synergistic effects with other ecosystem processes, attributes, or even environmental changes. The biogeochemical cycles, mainly nitrogen and phosphorus, are increasingly recognized as important controls of the future global carbon cycle. In addition, models based on high plant functional variability rise as a promising alternative to better characterize the dynamics of changing ecosystems. This study presents an innovative modelling approach considering the fully coupling of carbon (C), N and P biogeochemical cycles, in a modeling framework that simulates the coexistence of hundreds of Plant Life-history Strategies. A never tested combination of characteristics in terrestrial ecosystem models. The new model was applied to simulate the ecosystems of the Pan-amazon in a recent climatological and historical period (1979-2016) and in a sensitivity test involving variations in temperature, precipitation, CO2, and nutrient concentration (N and P). The historical simulation was compared with reference data in a biogeochemical evaluation process, based on a protocol of wide use in the modeling of terrestrial ecosystems. The historical simulation and the data generated in the sensitivity test were the basis for the development of a multidimensional functional analysis method that was used here to accurately identify important interactions between the functional composition of the simulated vegetation and the ecosystem processes under different simulated environmental conditions. The results of the sensitivity tests were qualitatively compared to the results of experiments involving the manipulation of nutrients and climatic variables. Finally, in the light of the previous analyses, a detailed analysis of the historical simulation was performed, aiming the elucidation of the various effects on vegetation, which are caused by increased water stress, temperature, and atmospheric CO2 concentration between 1979 and 2016. The combination of greater functional diversity and the N and P cycles coupled to the C cycle in a dynamic vegetation model revealed important interactions between functional composition of the simulated area and the complex balance between C assimilation and autotrophic respiration, which ultimately make up the main control over biomass in terrestrial ecosystems. Additionally, a relevant result not foreseen in the initial plan is presented: a set of maps and an analysis of the different chemical forms of P in the soils of the study area. FAPESP: 2017/00005-3. Dentro deste contexto, o setor de mineração apresenta uma característica extrativista de grande impacto ambiental, sendo exportado parte dos minérios de ferro beneficiados no Brasil, permanecendo parte dos impactos ambientais em territórios nacionais. Devido à relevância do setor de mineração de ferro para o desenvolvimento socioeconômico do Brasil, é necessário criar iniciativas mais sustentáveis na dimensão ambiental para o setor. Esta pesquisa busca apresentar uma metodologia para determinar as emissões de CO2 em projetos de terminais portuários de exportação de minério de ferro, introduzindo um novo conceito “Índice de emissões de CO2 de um Projeto”. O índice estabelecido utiliza como referência as emissões de CO2 em relação a capacidade produtiva e ciclo de vida do projeto. O trabalho foi delimitado entre o transporte ferroviário, processos internos dos terminais portuários, transporte marítimo e destinos de exportação. Foi consolidado o inventário energético de materiais-serviços aplicado na cadeia integrada de exportação, abrangendo as etapas do projeto: engenharia, construção, operação, transporte ferroviário e marítimo. Os resultados alcançados com o desenvolvimento da metodologia, permitem quantificar de forma prévia na fase de desenvolvimento da engenharia, as emissões de CO2 em cada etapa do projeto, possibilitando o desenvolvimento de projetos com maior sustentabilidade na dimensão ambiental. The balance among preserving the ecosystem, meeting the social needs of communities, and maintaining economic development is a survival condition for any type of business and project. Within this context, the mining sector presents an extractive characteristic of great environmental impact, being exported part of the iron ores benefited in Brazil, remaining part of the environmental impacts in national territories. Due to the importance of the iron mining sector for the socioeconomic development of Brazil, it is necessary to create more sustainable initiatives in the environmental dimension for the sector. This research seeks to present a methodology to determine the CO2 emissions in projects of port terminals of export of iron ore, introducing a new concept "Index of CO2 emissions of a Project". The established index uses CO2 emissions in relation to the productive capacity and project life cycle. The work was delimited between rail transport, internal processes of port terminals, shipping and export destinations. The energy-materials-services inventory applied in the integrated export chain was consolidated, covering the stages of the project: engineering, construction, operation, rail and maritime transportation. The results obtained with the development of the methodology, allow to quantify previously in the development phase of the engineering, CO2 emissions in each stage of the project, enabling the development of projects with greater sustainability in the environmental dimension.

O microcosmo natural misto contido em bromélias tanque, ou seja, formado por componentes terrestres e aquáticos, é um sistema favorável para estudos sobre os efeitos interecossistêmicos da predação e seus reflexos sobre os processos ecossistêmicos bromelícolas. Nesta Tese busquei por meio de observações e experimentos em campo elucidar questões comportamentais e ecológicas de um predador terrestre, a aranha Corinna demersa (Corinnidae) e sua relação com os organismos aquáticos e processos ecossistêmicos contido nos fitotelmatas de bromélias tanque em uma área de Mata Atlântica no litoral sudeste brasileiro. No primeiro capítulo, reconheci a interação exclusiva deste predador com bromélias tanque, habitat o qual ele utiliza durante todo seu ciclo de vida com comportamentos adaptados a este ambiente. No segundo capítulo, identifiquei os efeitos diretos e indiretos deste predador terrestre em uma comunidade aquática simplificada e comparei a intensidade da cascata trófica causada por ele, pelo predador aquático e por ambos. Os principais resultados foram os efeitos letais diferenciados do predador terrestre e aquático entre os grupos de detritívoros e a interação antagonística entre eles refletida na sobrevivência total das presas aquáticas. Reconheci a influência da qualidade dos detritos sobre a intensidade das cascatas tróficas desencadeadas pelos predadores sobre a fragmentação de detritos. A cascata ocasionada pelo predador aquático pode ser mais intensa que a ocasionada pelo predador terrestre em determinado tipo de detrito, porém também é amortecida ou intensificada pelo efeito interativo dos predadores sobre os detritívoros. No último capítulo, testei o efeito... Predation is a kind of ecological interaction that strongly influences the structure and dynamic of not only terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, but also in a connective way in the ecotones where the borders lines are thin. Tank bromeliads provide a naturally mixed microcosm, composed by both terrestrial and aquatic elements, being suitable for the study of across-ecosystems predation effects, and the consequences in the bromeliad ecosystem effects. In our study we aimed to elucidated behavioral and ecological issues of the terrestrial predator, the spider Corinna demersa (Corinnidae), and its relationship with aquatic organisms and the ecosystem processes present in the tank bromeliads of the Atlantic Rainforest in the southeastern coast of Brazil. In the first chapter we identify the exclusive interaction between this predator and tank bromeliads, being the habitat where the spider spends its whole life, showing particular behaviors adapted to this environment. In the second chapter the direct and indirect effects of this predator in an aquatic and simplified community were identified, being the intensity of the trophic cascade compared when initiated by the terrestrial predator, by the aquatic and both. The main results point out the distinct lethal effects between terrestrial and aquatic predators and their antagonistic interaction, which results in the total survivor of aquatic preys. We documented the influence of the quality of detritus on the intensity of trophic cascades triggered by predators over the fragmentation rate of detritus. A cascade generated by the aquatic predator may be more intense than that generated by the terrestrial predator in a specific type of detritus, although it could be either diminished or enhanced due to the interactive effect of predators over detritivorous. Na regeneração natural dos ecossistemas, a disponibilidade de sementes é um fator importante para a sobrevivência e persistência da comunidade vegetal dentro do hábitat. Assim, o banco e a chuva de sementes têm sido considerados como os principais processos para a manutenção das comunidades vegetais. O objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar a importância da dispersão e persistência de sementes no banco do solo na dinâmica de regeneração da comunidade vegetal em diferentes sistemas de restauração da floresta estacional semidecidual. O estudo foi realizado em duas áreas experimentais de Botucatu (São Paulo), cada uma contendo características diferentes de solo. Em cada área, há 18 anos, foram implantados cinco sistemas de restauração sob um delineamento em blocos com três repetições, e parcelas de 50 x 50 m, sendo: a) semeadura direta (SEMD), b) sistema agroflorestal (SAF), c) consórcio de espécies para madeira e lenha (COML), e) plantio diversificado (PDIV) e f) restauração passiva (controle) (RPSV). Thereby, seeds bank and seeds rain have been considered as the principal processes for plant communities maintenance. The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of the soil seed bank and the seed rain for the regeneration dynamics of plant communities under different seasonal semi-deciduous forest restoration systems. The study was undertaken in two experimental sites at Botucatu county (São Paulo), each one havind contrasting soil characteristics. Five restoration systems were stablished in 1997-1998, in a random block design with three replications in each site, with 50 x 50 m plots. Treatments were: a) direct seeding (SEMD), b) agroforestry system (SAF), c) timber and firewood mixed species plantation(COML), e) high-diversity plantation (PDIV) and f) passive restoration as control (RPSV). Furthermore, a natural forest fragment (FRAG) was evaluated in each area as a reference ecosystem. Soil samples were collected at 5 cm deepth (8 samples perplots), in order to analyse the seed bank by the germination method, respectively during the rainy and dry seasons. Soil samples were installed in germination boxes at the nursery. Sedling emergence was monitored during six months. For the seed rain study, 4 circular traps of 0.25 m² were installed in each plot, and the seeds were collected monthly during one year. The seed bank was composed mainly by herbaceous species in all restoration systems, comprinsing 83% and 73% of species for areas 1 and 2 respectively. A primeira etapa deste trabalho consistiu em delimitar o conjunto de dissertações e teses a partir dos critérios de seleção de um grupo interinstitucional de pesquisa em EA (o EArte), utilizando, para isso, um catálogo eletrônico produzido por este grupo. Foram analisados nove desses trabalhos que tratam o conceito como elemento central, com a finalidade de construir os significados e os sentidos emergentes dessas teses e dissertações. The main goal was to discuss the meaning and sense attributed to the concept of Ecosystem within the selected papers in the educational context under the perspective of Mikhail Bakhtin and his Circle (1894-1974). The first part of this work consisted of delimiting the range of dissertations and theses, selected according to criteria established by an interinstitutional research group in EE (EArte) over a collection of 63 selected works undertaken by that group. Herein, we analyzed nine studies that show the ecosystem concept as their pivotal topic. The objective was to verify the meaning and the sense emerging from those efforts. In this sense, the examination of such concept into EE research was supported by the view of cultural and historical studies take place within the context of qualitative research in education of documental character. No entanto, este conhecimento se baseia em estudos feitos em florestas temperadas e por conseguinte ainda há lacunas no conhecimento dos sistemas tropicais, onde a abundância e variedade das presas é maior. Neste trabalho, buscamos descrever o efeito dos insetos aquáticos emergentes sobre a dinâmica predador-presa das teias alimentares terrestres presentes em zonas ripárias de uma floresta tropical. Para testar este efeito, utilizamos um desenho experimental de blocos aleatorizados. Deste modo, manipulamos a emergencia de insetos adultos de um riacho, utilizando um tratamento de exclusão com uma cobertura plástica sobre o riacho e um tratamento de controle, onde permitimos a emergência natural dos insetos para a terra. Amostramos os insetos aquáticos emergentes com armadilhas adesivas e os artrópodes terrestres (predadores, fitófagos, onívoros, detritívoros) usando diversos métodos. A abundância de insetos aquáticos emergentes foi cinco vezes menor no tratamento de exclusão do que no tratramento de controle, mas como esperado, não houve diferenças nas abundâncias de insetos alados terrestres entre os tratamentos; insetos terrestres foram três vezes mais abundantes que os insetos aquáticos emergentes. PERMANOVA revelou que a abundância de predadores terrestres foi afetada pelo tratamento de exclusão de subsídios, mas não a biomassa. It is widely known that input of allochthonous subsidies in recipient food webs directly participate in the dynamics of consumers and indirectly on predator-prey interactions. However, this knowledge is based on studies from temperate forests, thus there is still a gap in the knowledge of tropical systems where the abundance and diversity of terrestrial prey is high. In this study, we investigate the effects of emergent aquatic insects on predator-prey dynamics of tropical terrestrial food webs. To test this effect, we excluded allochthonous aquatic insects using greenhouse type exclosures, and allowed emergence of insects through unmanipulated stream reaches using a randomized design. Emergent aquatic insects and terrestrial flying insects were collected through sticky traps. Terrestrial arthropods in shrubs and ground were collected manually in nocturnal and diurnal surveys, and were classified in predators, phytophages, detritivores and omnivores. The abundance of aquatic insects was five times lower in exclosures than control, but there was no effect of treatment on abundance of terrestrial fly insects; abundance of terrestrial insects were three times more abundant that aquatic insects. PERMANOVA revealed that abundance of terrestrial predators, but not their biomass, was affected by exclosure treatment. Univariate analysis show that only 11.5% of predatory taxa (Anyphaenidae, Araneidae and Theridiidae) decreased its abundance in exclosure treatment and only 7.7% of them (Araneidae and Theridiidae) decreased its biomass. Abundance of phytophages, detritivores and omnivores was not affected by treatments, but the biomass of phytophages increased six times in exclosure treatment. Tais savanas se desenvolveram sobre solos ácidos, pobres em nutrientes e com estações secas e chuvosas bem definidas. Dentre os filtros ecológicos limitantes à manutenção das savanas, fogo, fertilidade do solo, disponibilidade hídrica e herbivoria são considerados os mais importantes. Outros filtros muito importantes, mas considerados subfiltros da fertilidade do solo são: acidez do solo e disponibilidade de alumínio (Al). O Al é considerado um elemento tóxico para a maior parte das plantas, entretanto as espécies savânicas são consideradas insensíveis ao Al, sendo algumas espécies inclusive acumuladoras. Desta forma, foi estudado o perfil nutricional, acúmulo de Al e escleromorfismo foliar de espécies savânicas em três níveis: regional, nacional e intercontinental. Para os níveis nacional e intercontinental acrescentamos as variações de pluviosidade anual, fertilidade e acidez do solo. Em nível regional comparamos as variações no grau de escleromorfismo, concentração de nutrientes foliares, acúmulo de Al, fenologia e produção de metabólitos secundários em folhas jovens e maduras de espécies acumuladoras e não acumuladoras de Al em um fragmento de cerrado em Itirapina – SP. Em nível nacional comparamos as variações das concentrações de nutrientes foliares, acúmulo de Al e escleromorfismo foliar entre dois fragmentos de cerrado sensu stricto (s. str.): um na região central (Brasília – DF) e o outro na borda sudeste do cerrado (Itirapina – SP). Savannas (located in Australia, Brazil and South Africa) hold the second largest biodiversity on the planet. These savannas have developed their vegetation structure on acidic and nutrient-poor soils, under a well-defined dry and rainy seasons. Among the limiting ecological filters, fire, soil fertility, water availability and herbivory are considered the most important ones. Other filters, which may be considered subfilters of the soil fertility are acidity and aluminum (Al) availability in the soil. Aluminum is considered a toxic element for most plant species, however savanna plants are insensitive to Al, and some species are Al-accumulators. We studied leaf nutritional status, Al accumulation and leaf scleromorphism of savanna species at three levels: regional, national and intercontinental. For national and intercontinental analysis we evaluated variations in the annual 9 rainfall, soil fertility and soil acidity. At the regional level, we compared leaf scleromorphism, nutritional status, Al accumulation, leaf phenology and the concentration of secondary metabolites in young and mature leaves of Al-accumulator and non-accumulator species in a cerrado remnant in Itirapina-SP. At the national level we compared the nutritional status, Al accumulation and leaf scleromorphism variations between two cerrado sensu stricto (s. str.) fragments:, one in the core region (Brasília - DF) and another on the southeastern periphery of the cerrado (Itirapina - SP). As características abióticas promovem a seleção de espécies que possuam atributos que possibilitem sua sobrevivência sob um conjunto específico de condições ambientais. Ultrapassar o nível taxonômico e analisar as comunidades com base nas funções que elas desempenham nos sistemas ecológicos pode ser a chave para ligar padrões e processos em ecologia de comunidades. Nosso objetivo foi compreender como os atributos funcionais da fase larval dos anuros estão relacionados com as características dos habitats, considerando que o habitat atua como um filtro para a ocorrência de girinos, e a homogeneização dos habitats pode limitar a composição àquelas espécies com determinados atributos. Esperamos então, que os gradientes de profundidade e complexidade da vegetação no interior dos corpos d'água atuem como filtros locais na distribuição dos atributos morfológicos e funcionais dos girinos. Compilamos dados de trabalhos com comunidades de girinos desenvolvidos em áreas de Floresta Estacional Semidecidual no Estado de São Paulo e determinamos a ocorrência de girinos de 23 espécies de anuros em 41 habitats. Testamos a existência de uma relação entre oito atributos funcionais dos girinos com a profundidade e tipos de vegetação no interior dos corpos d’água em que eles ocorriam. The functional traits of species that determine how the species uses resources, along evolution, can differ or remain similar to their ancestors. Abiotic characteristics promote selection of traits that allow survival under a set of environmental conditions. Overcoming the taxonomic level and analyze the communities based on the functions they play in ecological systems can be the key to connect patterns and processes in community ecology. Our goal was to understand way the functional attributes of the larval stage of frogs are related to habitat characteristics, considering the habitat acts as a filter for the occurrence of tadpoles, and the habitat homogenization can limit the composition to those species with certain attributes. We expect then that the gradients of depth and complexity of the vegetation within the water bodies act as filters in the local distribution of morphological and functional traits of the tadpoles. Compiled database of studies with communities of tadpoles developed in areas of semideciduous forest in the State of São Paulo and determine the occurrence of tadpoles of 23 frog species in 41 habitats. We tested the existence of a relationship between eight functional traits of tadpoles with depth and vegetation types within the water bodies in which they occurred. Our results indicate that the association of morphological traits of tadpoles with water bodies was not random, showing that gradients of depth and number of vegetation types influence the distribution of tadpoles in habitats. Objetivou-se, neste trabalho, avaliar três sistemas com agroflorestas em diferentes épocas de implantação, com inclusão de espécies frutíferas e culturas anuais para subsistência, tendo como referência uma Mata Nativa sob a mesma vegetação típica de Cerrado-Cerradão. Para isso, coletaram-se amostras de um Latossolo Vermelho Amarelo, em duas profundidades 0-0,20 e 0,20-0,40m, para avaliação dos atributos químicos pH, cálcio, magnésio, fósforo, potássio, hidrogênio + alumínio e matéria orgânica, bem como, macro e microporosidade, densidade do solo, teores de silte, areia e argila para classificação textural do solo, e resistência à penetração. Os resultados foram submetidos à análise descritiva e análise multivariada com estudo de componentes principais, que possibilitou caracterizar por técnicas de agrupamentos, três grupos distintos (G1, G2 e G3), o grupo G1 tendo agrupado as variáveis do solo com Mata Nativa, G2 agruparam-se (SAF 1 e SAF 2 com 7 e 4 anos de implantação respectivamente), e G3 (SAF 3, com 3 anos). O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado em esquema fatorial 3x4, sendo 3 - fator sistema de uso (Terra Preta de Índio formada sobre: Argissolo Amarelo sob Floresta Secundária – TPI/ARGI FS; Argissolo Amarelo sob Capoeira – ARGI CP e Argissolo Amarelo sob Roça – ARGI RÇ) e 4 - fator profundidade (0 a 5; 5 a 10; 10 a 20 e 20 a 30 cm), co m 9 repetições. This study aimed to evaluate through the physical, chemical and isotopic composition of δ 13 C and δ 15 N changes caused by different tillage systems on the effective depth layer in anthropogenic soils. The experimental design was completely randomized in a 3x4 factorial design, 3 - factor use system (Terra Preta formed on Ultisol under Secondary Forest - TPI /ARGI FS ; Ultisol under Capoeira - ARGI CP and Ultisol under Plantation - ARGI RC ) and 4 - depth factor (0 to 5, 5 to 10, 10 to 20 and 20 to 30 cm) using 9 replicates. In each system was performed characterization, classification, collection and analysis of 108 composite samples. The variables studied were: particle size, carbon storage, isotopic composition of δ 13 C, δ 15 N, C and N content, C/N ratio, pH in H 2 O and ClCa 2 , soil organic matter, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sodium, boron, copper, manganese, iron, zinc, aluminum, hydrogen and aluminum, sum of base cation exchange capacity, capacity exchange cation effective base saturation index and the index of aluminum saturation. Com a retirada dos indivíduos de sansão-do-campo, foram testadas as seguintes hipóteses: 1) Mimosa caesalpiniifolia exerce efeito supressor nas comunidades em restauração; 2) A resposta ao manejo será variável entre espécies, modelos de restauração e situações ambientais. O estudo foi realizado no município de Botucatu, estado de São Paulo, em duas áreas experimentais com características diferentes de solo e dois modelos de restauração (um sistema agroflorestal e um consórcio de espécies para madeira e lenha). Os tratamentos de eliminação de 100% das árvores (manejo) e testemunha foram comparados dentro de cada área e entre áreas. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi em blocos ao acaso com parcelas subdivididas. Os resultados... The use of exotic species as facilitators in restoration plantings can be opportune as they can reconcile economic, social, and ecological benefits. Otherwise they may compete with native species during a later phase, delaying the successional process or even deviating the expected successional trajectory. In these cases, adaptive management practices (i.e. species removal) might be necessary to ensure the achievement of restoration goals. We looked at the effect of elimination of an exotic tree species (M. caesalpiniifolia) over the native species regeneration in forest restoration plantings. We tested the following hypotheses: 1) Mimosa caesalpiniifolia imposes a suppressive effect over the community in restoration, 2) The response to the management intervention will vary among species, models of restoration, and environmental situations. The study was undertaken in Botucatu, state of São Paulo, at two sites with contrasting soil fertility after 14 years of the establishment of two plantation models to restore the tropical semideciduous moist forest, namely: AS- Agroforestry System; and MIX- mixed commercial plantation with timber and firewood tree species. The natural regeneration of woody species (height ≥ 0.2 m) was compared between managed (M. caesalpiniifolia trees removed) and unmanaged (control) plots, soon after and one year after the thinning. . The experimental design was in randomized blocks with split plots. After the management the regeneration diversity increased and the basal area decreased; nevertheless, the basal area loss was recovered after one year, in comparison with the control plots. The disease consists of a spectrum of clinical manifestations including the tegumentary (TL) and the visceral leishmaniasis (VL) forms, the latter more important for public health because of its higher lethality. Visceral leishmaniasis occurs in Brazil in environments modified by man, with an increase in the urban area where it has been reported in the five regions of country. Lutzomyia longipalpis is the main vector for visceral leishmaniasis in the New World, with great importance in Brazil and in the state of São Paulo due to its abundance and easy adaptation. In the biological cycle of the parasite observed development of the promastigote forms in the vector and the turning for amastigote in the host when phagocytosed by macrophages. Aiming at reducing the increasing incidence of VL in human and canine preventive and control measures targeting man, dogs and the vector have been used in Brazil. Neste trabalho analisou-se a variação regional dos teores de C e N e suas assinaturas insotópicas, bem como de outros elementos na camada superior dos solos do município de Iperó-SP. Amostras deformadas e indeformadas de solos foram coletadas nos primeiros 20 cm superficiais em 29 pontos, considerando as diferentes classes de cobertura da terra. As amostras foram secas, pesadas e peneiradas para análises posteriores em laboratórios específicos. Adicionalmente, mapas digitais de espacialização das informações foram elaborados para dar suporte à interpretação dos dados. O município de Iperó apresenta predominância de pastagens e, diferentemente das outras regiões, um alto índice de vegetação nativa remanescente, devido à presença da FLONA. Os dados de isótopos de C indicam valores médios de -26,46% para a classe Cerrado, -24,62% para a Mata e -17,19% para pastagem. De modo geral, os indicadores de qualidade física e química se apresentaram condizentes com a realidade embora com diferenças discretas entre as diferentes classes de cobertura da terra, não apresentado diferenças significativas Studying the soil quality supports the knowledge of consequences of land cover change, and supportsmaking decision in planning the future development of the regions. In this work the regional variation in the levels of C and N and their isotopic signatures was analyzed, as well as other elements in topsoil from Iperó-SP. Deformed and original soil samples were collected in the first 20 cm in 29 points, considering the different classes of land cover. All samples were georreferenced. Samples were dried, weigted, seived, and delivered for further analysis in specific laboratories. Additionally, digital maps were prepared to support the interpretation of the data. In Iperó there is a high occurrence of pasture and, unike other regions, a high rate of rennant native vegetations, due to the presence of the FLONA. The C isotope data indicate mean values of - 26.46% for class Savannah, -24,62% for Forest and -17.19% for pasture. Values between classes of Savannah and Forest were similar among themselves. A ausência dos grandes mamíferos causa uma falta de seus processos fundamentais sobre comunidades de plantas como a herbivoria, o pisoteio, a predação e a dispersão de sementes. A perda de espécies resulta em perda de funções ecológicas o que altera o próprio funcionamento do ecossistema. Essa dissertação está organizada em dois capítulos: Primeiro (Capítulo I: A defaunação seletiva de mamíferos altera sua diversidade funcional em florestas atlânticas contínuas) nós analisamos como mudanças na riqueza e abundância de espécies de mamíferos de médio e grande porte afetam a diversidade funcional em Florestas Atlânticas tropicais brasileiras. Encontramos que, apesar das quatro áreas estudadas fazerem parte do mesmo contínuo de Floresta Atlântica, a riqueza e a abundância de espécies não são similares entre elas, e em uma das quatro áreas encontramos diversidade funcional alterada, o que revela a existência de comunidades de grandes mamíferos distintas nas áreas. Segundo (Capítulo II: Consequências da extinção de herbívoros sobre a diversidade de plantas em um gradiente de defaunação) nós investigamos se a ausência de grandes mamíferos altera a riqueza, densidade e beta diversidade de plântulas em florestas tropicais, a Floresta Atlântica Brasileira. Nas áreas sem... Human impact on tropical ecosystems has a pervasive effect on large bodied vertebrate populations. The absence of large mammals causes a lack of fundamental processes performed by them within the plant communities, such as herbivory, trampling, seed predation and seed dispersal. Species loss results in loss of ecological functions altering the proper functioning of the ecosystem. This dissertation is organized into two chapters. Firstly (Chapter I: Selective mammal defaunation changes functional diversity in continuous Atlantic rainforests) we analyzed how changes in species richness and abundance of mid and large forest-dwelling mammals affect functional diversity in a tropical forest, the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. We found that, despite the fact that the four studied sites compose the same Atlantic Forest continuum, species richness and abundance were not similar between sites and in one of four sites we found an alteration in functional diversity, which reveals the existence of distinct large mammal communities in these areas. Secondly (Chapter II: Consequences of herbivores extinction on plant diversity in a gradient of defaunation) we investigated whether the absence of large mammals alters seedling species richness, density and beta diversity in the same areas. We found that at peccary-present sites, the presence of large herbivorous mammals (open plots) causes a tendency of decrease in seedling density and a tendency of increase in beta diversity, but we found no pattern of their effect over seedling richness. O paradigma do efeito latitudinal no padrão da abundância e distribuição espaço-temporal foi verificado com o intuito de testar se o mesmo pode ser proposto para este grupo. As coletas foram efetuadas mensalmente com dois barcos camaroneiros em três transectos em áreas com profundidades dos 5 aos 20 metros. Cada transecto foi percorrido por 60 minutos em cada região. Foi estimada a diversidade (H‟) aplicando o índice de Shannon-Wiener. A equidade (J‟) e a similaridade das espécies entre as estações do ano e regiões também foram calculadas. A análise de correlação canônica (CANONICA) foi empregada com o intuito de observar a relação entre a abundância das espécies e os fatores ambientais analisados. Foram capturados 148.266 indivíduos (102.832 em Macaé e 45.434 em Ubatuba), pertencentes a 15 espécies, 13 gêneros e 6 famílias (Penaeidae, Solenoceridae, Sicyoniidae, Palaeomonidae, Alpheidae e Hippolytidae). Quase todas as espécies foram coletadas nas duas regiões amostradas, excetuando-se Sicyonia laevigata, Periclimenes paivai e Lysmata sp., que foram capturadas apenas na região de Macaé, e Leander paulensis, capturada apenas na região de Ubatuba. Uma espécie do gênero Lysmata foi encontrada na região de Macaé e, provavelmente, representa um novo registro para o estado do Rio de Janeiro ou ainda uma nova espécie. Na interação conhecida como epifitismo vascular, a epífita utiliza-se apenas do substrato fornecido pela planta portadora, sendo independente do forófito na obtenção de nutrientes e água. As epífitas contribuem para a diversidade biológica nas comunidades vegetais, desempenham um papel importante na produtividade primária e na ciclagem de nutrientes, podem ser indicadoras ecológicas do estádio sucessional da floresta e são essenciais nos processos de recuperação de áreas degradadas e enriquecimento florestal. O recente reconhecimento do dossel das florestas tropicais como um dos celeiros da biodiversidade do planeta tem incentivado estudos que procuram entender os processos ligados à comunidade epifítica, destacando o seu papel na funcionalidade dos ecossistemas. Além disso, poucos estudos sobre epífitas no Brasil foram realizados no cerradão, na floresta estacional semidecidual sem influência fluvial e na floresta estacional semidecidual com influência fluvial permanente (mata de brejo), ocorrentes em uma mesma região, onde não há constância de umidade relativa do ar ao longo do ano. Estas formações vegetais ocorrem no município de Bauru e foram selecionadas como áreas de estudo para o desenvolvimento desta pesquisa. O intuito desta dissertação é contribuir para o conhecimento da composição florística e estrutura do componente epifítico nas três formações vegetais, analisando a similaridade florística, a diversidade e a distribuição vertical Epiphytes are autotrophic vascular plants that germinate, take root and grow on other plants for support. In the interaction known as vascular epiphytism, the epiphyte uses only the substrate provided by the host plant, being independent of the phorophyte for water and nutrition. Epiphytes contribute to biological diversity in plant communities, play an important role in primary productivity and nutrient cycling, may be ecological indicators of successional stage of the forest and are essential in the process of degraded areas recovery and forest enrichment. The recent recognition of the tropical forest canopy as storehouses of biodiversity on the planet has encouraged studies that seek to understand the processes involved in epiphytic community, highlighting their role in ecosystem function. In addition, few studies about epiphytes in Brazil were carried out in the cerradão (woodland savanna), in the seasonal semideciduous forest without fluvial influence and, in the seasonal semideciduous forest with permanent fluvial influence (swamp forest) occurring in the same region, where there is no air relative humidity constancy throughout the year. These plant formations occur in the municipality of Bauru and were selected as study areas for the development of this research. Este trabalho objetivou comparar o Organossolo (H) com os Latossolos Vermelhos (cultivado com milho forrrageiro, LV-c; e de pastagem degradada, LV-p) utilizando-se os atributos microbiológicos, químicos e físicos nas estações verão e inverno. Foram avaliadas as populações de bactérias totais, esporuladas, Gram-negativas, actinobactérias, amônio-oxidantes, nitrito-oxidantes, desnitrificantes e dos fungos totais; as atividades e enzimas relacionadas aos ciclos do C, N e P, as análises químicas como MOS, umidade, carboidratos, proteína total, C orgânico solúvel (COS), P total, P orgânico, P inorgânico, P resina, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, H+Al e a granulometria dos solos. Também foram calculadas a soma de cátions trocáveis (T), a soma das bases (SB) e o índice de saturação por bases (V%). O delineamento experimental utilizado foi em blocos casualizados segundo esquema fatorial 3x2, sendo três solos e duas estações climáticas. Foi realizada a análise de variância e o teste de Scott-Knott para comparação entre médias e correlação linear simples entre as variáveis. A análise de correlação possibilitou demonstrar o efeito dos atributos químicos e granulométricos sobre as populações e atividades microbianas. As populações de micro-organismos, exceto bactérias amônio-oxidantes e nitrito-oxidantes, foram maiores no Organossolo do que no LV-c ou LV-p. Microorganisms and their activities are used as biological indicators of soil quality. This study aimed to compare Histosol (H) with Red Oxisols (cultivated with fodder corn, LV-c, and degraded pasture, LV-p) using the microbiological, chemical and physical attributes in summer and winter seasons. Populations of total bacteria, sporulating bacteria, Gram-negative bacteria, actinobacteria, ammonium-oxidizing, nitrite-oxidizing, denitrifying bacteria and total fungi were evaluated. We analyzed enzyme activities related to the cycles of C, N and P, the chemical analysis such as MOS, moisture, carbohydrates, total protein, soluble organic C (COS), total P, organic/inorganic P, P resin, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, H+Al and soil particle size. It was also calculated the sum of exchangeable cations (T), the sum of bases (SB) and the index of base saturation (V%). The experimental design was completely randomized 3x2 factorial, in three soils and during two seasons. Analysis of variance and Scott-Knott test were conducted to compare averages and simple linear correlation among variables. Correlation analysis allowed to demonstrate the effect of the chemical and granulometric characteristics on microbial populations and activities. Populations of microorganisms, except ammonium-oxidizing and nitrite-oxidizing bacteria were higher in Histosol than in the LV-c or LV-p. As closely related species often share similar morphological traits, both phylogeny and ecology can explain the convergence or divergence of species morphology. We evaluated the relative importance of spiders’ phylogeny and ecological niche to the variation in spider body size and shape by comparing spiders (i) between bromeliads and dicot plants and (ii) among bromeliads with distinct architectural features. We tested whether bromeliad-living spiders have similar morphological traits to spiders from surrounding dicots and whether the differences in spider body size and shape are related to bromeliad architecture or to the spiders’ phylogeny. Spiders from bromeliads were larger and flatter than spiders associated with the surrounding dicots; this pattern was explained only by the spiders’ phylogeny. However, spider flatness was related to both phylogeny and ecological niche, suggesting that both historical processes and recent adaptations drive the evolution of spider body shape. Bromeliads appear to favour larger and flatter spiders because they provide a larger resource supply and their leaves are tightly interlocked compared to surrounding dicot plants, providing shelters from predators. By partitioning the phylogenetic and ecological components of phenotypic variation, we were able to disentangle the evolutionary history of distinct spider traits and show that plant architecture plays a role in the evolution of spider body size and shape

O grande problema da caça é que diminui de modo diferencial algumas populações de mamíferos, colocando em risco as interações animalplanta. Isso interfere na dinâmica florestal, e assim na ‘saúde’ do ecossistema. Esta Dissertação de Mestrado foi dividida em dois capítulos: no Capítulo I (“Densidade, abundância e biomassa de mamíferos de médio e grande porte na Ilha do Cardoso”), buscouse verificar qual é o estado de conservação da comunidade de mamíferos do Parque Estadual Ilha do Cardoso (PEIC), uma área contínua de floresta na floresta tropical”), pretendeu-se entender os processos desencadeados pela ausência do maior mamífero herbívoro existente no PEIC, as queixadas, ainda pouco estudados, principalmente na floresta Atlântica. Com dados coletados entre abril de 2010 e novembro de 2011 por meio de duas das metodologias mais utilizadas para grandes mamíferos (censo por transecções lineares e armadilhamento fotográfico), ficou claro que a população destes animais ainda apresenta-se bastante preservada, apesar da extinção da anta (Tapirus terrestris) e da onça-pintada (Panthera onca) (Capítulo I). Isso coloca o PEIC como uma importante área para conservação de espécies de mamíferos no estado de São Paulo. Através da comparação entre parcelas abertas e fechadas, através da defaunação simulada, ficou clara a importância de grandes mamíferos herbívoros como influentes pisoteadores e modificadores da diversidade ao longo do tempo. Analisando apenas a diversidade local de plantas (H´), estes mamíferos podem ser considerados destrutivos. Contudo... Densities of mammals depend on many factors, and fragmentation is among them. However, even in continuous areas, mammals suffer with other anthropogenic factor that modifies their densities, the hunting. The major problem is that hunting reduces some mammal populations differentially, endangering the animal-plant interactions. This interferes on forest dynamics, placing in risk the 'health' of the ecosystem. This Master thesis was divided into two chapters: in the Chapter I (Density, abundance and biomass of large mammals in Ilha do Cardoso), we attempted to verify the conservation status of the mammal community of Ilha do Cardoso State Park (PEIC), a continuous area of Atlantic forest, in Chapter II (“Large mammals increase plant diversity on an island of rainforest”), we tried to understand the processes caused by the absence of the largest herbivorous mammals in PEIC, poorly studied mainly in the Atlantic forest. With data collected between April 2010 and November 2011 by two of the most common methodologies for large mammals (linear transect and camera trapping), it became clear that the population of these animals still is a rather preserved, despite the extinction of the tapir (Tapirus terrestris) and jaguar (Panthera onca) (Chapter I). This places the PEIC as an important area for conservation of mammal species in Sao Paulo State. The comparison between open and closed portions, by simulated defaunation showed a clear importance of herbivorous mammals as great influence on trampling and on diversity over time. Given only local plant diversity (H '), these mammals can be considered destructive. O objetivo deste estudo foi entender quais fatores locais e da paisagem melhor explicam os padrões de distribuição de espécies de anuros. O estudo foi desenvolvido na região noroeste do Estado de São Paulo, entre julho de 2007 e fevereiro de 2009, empregando duas metodologias de amostragem: 1) armadilhas de interceptação e queda, instaladas no interior de 18 fragmentos florestais, e 2) procura auditiva e visual em 64 corpos d’água da região. Das 37 espécies conhecidas para esta região, 30 foram registradas neste estudo, sendo 13 no interior dos fragmentos florestais e 29 nos corpos d’água. A eficiência de amostragem foi avaliada por rarefação da curva do coletor. A curva do coletor atingiu a assíntota, indicando que para encontrarmos mais uma espécie o efeito amostral deveria ser muito intensificado. Modelos lineares generalizados (GLM) e análise de ordenação foram aplicados aos dados dos fragmentos florestais, incluindo uma variável espacial (coordenadas geográficas) como preditor de riqueza e composição além das variáveis ambientais que descrevem os fragmentos florestais. Para verificar qual variável ou conjunto de variáveis explicam a riqueza e composição de espécies observadas nos corpos d’água, foram aplicadas análises de regressão linear e correlação de matrizes. Se um efeito significativo fosse detectado, isso indicaria que a riqueza e composição de espécies dos fragmentos florestais e/ou corpos d’água seriam formadas por processos de seleção de habitat. Species local diversity can be regulated by local (such as competition, disturbance, abiotic conditions) and regional factors (climate history, evolution and migration). The aim of this study was understand which local and landscape factors best explain the distribution patterns of anuran species. The study was developed in the northwestern São Paulo State between july 2007 and february 2009, using two sampling methods: 1) pitfall traps, installed in the interior of 18 forest fragments, and 2) hearing and visual search in 64 ponds located around the forest fragments. We registered 30 of the 37 known species to the study region: 13 in the interior of forest fragments and 29 in ponds. A rarefaction curve was used in the assessment of the sampling efficiency and results indicate that sampling effort should be highly intensified in order to find one more species. We characterize forest fragments and ponds by measuring five and ten environmental variables, respectively. These environmental variables were used as predictors of richness and composition of these habitats. General Linear Models (GLM) and ordination analysis were applied to the forest fragments data, which includes a spatial variable (geographic coordinates) as a predictor of richness and composition besides environmental variables that describe the forest fragments. In order to verify which variable or set of variables would explain the observed species richness and composition in ponds, it was applied linear regression and matrices correlation to the data. If a significant effect was detected, this would indicate that species richness and composition of the forest fragments and/or ponds are shaped by habitat selection processes. Nesse sentido, um dos processos de facilitação é o uso de poleiros naturais e artificiais. Este se beneficia da natureza potencialmente dispersora de aves frugívoras. No presente estudo foram testadas as seguintes hipóteses: 1) famílias de aves menos dependentes de habitats florestais e com maior amplitude de itens alimentares (Turdidae e Tyrannidae) são mais eficientes na dispersão de sementes sob poleiros localizados em áreas degradadas; 2) famílias de aves que ocupam preferencialmente o interior de florestas e cuja dieta é composta principalmente por frutos (Ramphastidae e Pipridae) são mais eficientes na manutenção de remanescentes florestais. Esta pesquisa foi executada por meio de extensa revisão bibliográfica com área de abrangência exclusiva em território brasileiro. Comparou-se a contribuição potencial de quatro famílias que consomem frutos para a dispersão de sementes. O foco do estudo foram suas características de uso de hábitat e dieta. The rapid loss of biological diversity on the tropics through habitat fragmentation can be reverted using nucleation techniques. In this regard, one of the facilitation processes is the use of natural and artificial pearches. This technique takes advantage of the potential seed dispersal nature of frugivorous birds. In the present study the following hypotheses have been tested: 1) families of birds less dependent of forest habitats and with more amplitude of food items (Turdidae and Tyrannidae) are more efficient spreading seeds by the pearchs located in degraded areas; 2) Birds that preferably occupy the interior of forests and whose diet is mainly compounded by fruits (Ramphastidae and Pipridae) are more efficient on the maintenance of forest remnants. This research was produced by means of extensive bibliographic review, regarding the Brazilian territory as the study`s coverage area. The potential contribution of four families that consume fruits causing the dispersal 3 of seeds has been comparatively analyzed. The focus of this study was mainly their characteristics of usage of the habitat and diet. Merril) (Fabaceae), que tornou-se uma das principais atividades da região. Assim, percebe-se que o modelo de agricultura atual não mantém o equilíbrio entre produção agrícola e preservação ambiental. Essa integração passa necessariamente pelo conhecimento sobre as espécies de organismos que habitam as áreas próximas aos cultivos; já estas podem se dispersar para as lavouras e interferir na sua produtividade. Ácaros são importantes neste contexto, principalmente pela existência de espécies-praga e espécies predadoras. Assim, este estudo teve como objetivo conhecer a acarofauna associada a plantas em áreas de cerrado sensu stricto e cultivos de soja na região central do país, além de verificar a influência da fitofisionomia sobre a acarofauna dessa cultura. Para isso, o trabalho foi organizado em três capítulos. No primeiro, foi realizado um levantamento da acarofauna associada a plantas nativas em 10 fragmentos de cerrado sensu stricto através de amotragens qualitativas, além de análise da similaridade e diversidade β para as comunidades de ácaros entre indivíduos de plantas hospedeiras localizados em diferentes áreas. Foram encontradas 123 espécies de ácaros, pertencentes a 20 famílias. Os testes de similaridade e diversidade β demonstraram que uma mesma espécie de planta apresentou diferentes comunidades de ácaros, conforme o fragmento analisado. The Cerrado is one of the major biomes due to abundance of endemic species and territorial dimension. It presents various vegetation types, among which there is the cerrado sensu stricto. Part of this biome has been lost to agricultural encroachment, mainly for the cultivation of soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merril) (Fabaceae), that became one of main activities in the region. Thus, it realized that this model does not maintain a balance between agricultural production and environmental preservation. This integration necessarily involves knowledge about the species of organisms that inhabit the areas near the crops, since they can disperse into crops, and interfere with their productivity. Mites are important in this context mainly by the existence of pest species and predators. Therefore, this study aimed to know the mites associated with plants in the cerrado sensu stricto and soybean crops in the central region of the country, and to investigate the influence of this phytophysiognomy on the mites in soybeans. For this, the work was organized into three chapters. At first, a survey was made of the mite fauna associated with native plants of the 10 fragments of Cerrado through qualitative samplings, and analysis of similarity and β diversity to mite communities among individuals of host plants located in different areas. 123 species of mites were found, belonging to 20 families. Entretanto, esta grande diversidade encontra-se ameaçada devido à degradação dos ecossistemas lóticos, principalmente pela alteração do habitat devido à destruição das florestas e fragmentação da rede hidrográfica. As florestas, principalmente as florestas ripárias, possuem funções ecológicas importantes para a estruturação dos riachos e das comunidades aquáticas. Por muito tempo, as florestas têm sido extensamente destruídas, sendo substituídas principalmente pelos usos agrícolas, ocasionando a destruição dos ecossistemas e da biodiversidade aquática. Além das alterações nas florestas, a presença de represamentos e cruzamentos de estradas gera impactos adicionais para os peixes ao romper a conectividade existente na rede hidrográfica. Os peixes possuem ciclos de vida complexos que dependem da complexidade estrutural do riacho e da conectividade entre trechos montante e jusante da rede. Portanto, a conservação das florestas e a manutenção da conectividade hidrológica são fatores importantes para a conservação das comunidades de peixes. Neste trabalho, avaliou-se a diversidade das comunidades de peixes de riachos em função das alterações na estrutura da paisagem florestal (composição e configuração) e da conectividade da rede hidrográfica em paisagens agrícolas. O estudo foi realizado em microbacias de 1ª a 4ª ordem pertencentes à bacia do rio Corumbataí. However, this great diversity is threatened due to lotic ecosystems degradation, mainly through forest destruction and stream network fragmentation. Forests, mainly riparian forests, have important ecological functions for stream and aquatic communities structuring. For a long time, forests have been extensively destroyed and replaced mainly by agricultural uses, causing stream and aquatic biodiversity destruction. Besides the alterations in forests, the presence of dams and road crossings generates additional impacts to fish by disrupting existing connectivity to the stream network. Fish have complex life cycles that depend of the stream structural complexity and the connectivity between upstream and downstream sections of the stream network. Hence, forest conservation and maintenance of hydrological connectivity are important factors for the conservation of fish communities. In this study, we evaluated stream fish community diversity in relation to changes in forest landscape structure (composition and configuration) and the stream network connectivity in agricultural landscapes. Tais características os tornam bons modelos para o estudo de questões relacionadas à modificação no habitat, sejam elas relativas a identificação de padrões ou inferência sobre processos associados à fragmentação ou perda de habitat original ou mesmo ocupação e colonização em áreas alteradas. Dentro deste contexto, este trabalho procurou como objetivo principal, determinar a diversidade e estrutura da taxocenose de anfíbios anuros presente em remanescentes de floresta estacional semidecidual (FES) e compará-la com a registrada em implantações silviculturais, na região centro-oeste do estado de São Paulo (capítulo 3). Além deste, buscou-se o levantamento da fauna em uma área preservada (Unidade de Conservação), afim de aproximar-se da composição presente na região antes do processo de fragmentação (capítulo 1), além da distribuição espacial das espécies encontradas nesse tipo de formação florestal (FES) e sua possível relação biogeográfica com taxocenoses presentes nas fitofisionomias limítrofes a ela (capítulo 2). Frogs are particularly sensitive to changes in habitat, either by their low vagility and fidelity to breeding and foraging sites, or even by had a complex life cycle with aquatic and terrestrial phase. Such characteristics make them good models for studying issues related to habitat change, whether concerning the identification of patterns or inferences about processes associated with fragmentation and habitat loss or occupancy and colonization in disturbed areas. Within this context, this work main goal sought to determine the diversity and structure of his assemblage of amphibians in forest remnants semideciduous (FES) and compare it with that recorded in silvicultural deployments in the mid-west region of São Paulo (Chapter 3). Besides this, we sought to survey anurans in a protected area (Conservation Unit), in order to approach the species composition in this region, before the fragmentation process (Chapter 1), and we tried to elucidate the spatial distribution of the species found in this type of forest formation (FES) and its possible biogeographical relationship with assemblages present in adjacent types of vegetation (Chapter 2). Lagartas de Lepidoptera enroladoras de folhas podem atuar como engenheiros dos ecossistemas florestais, uma vez que são capazes de modular interações entre comunidade artrópode – planta fornecendo aos colonizadores secundários diversos tipos de benefícios. Essas lagartas quando engenheiras influenciam o padrão de distribuição e abundância de outras espécies facilitando indiretamente a ocorrência de novas espécies, bem como aumentam a diversidade de artrópodes sobre planta. Apesar de estudos terem demonstrado que lagartas engenheiras ampliam a diversidade de artrópodes sobre folhas (efeito local), apenas um estudo avaliou o efeito na planta por inteiro (efeito regional), mas apenas para guildas específicas (i.e., herbívoros); nenhum estudo até agora avaliou como comunidades diversificadas, de regiões tropicais, respondem aos impactos de lagartas engenheiras. Nesse estudo reportamos a influência das lagartas enroladoras sobre comunidades de artrópodes em grande escala espacial (i.e., efeito local e regional) e temporal (i.e., diferentes períodos sazonais). Especificamente, avaliamos se (i) abrigos foliares favorecem a ocorrência de artrópodes e amplificam diversidade sobre plantas, (ii) se o tipo de abrigo (funil, cilindro com diferentes diâmetros) interfere na colonização por diferentes guildas de artrópodes, (iii) se os efeitos dos abrigos é local (folha) ou estende-se por toda a planta hospedeira (efeito regional), (iv) se plantas com abrigos foliares atraem maior número de artrópodes nos períodos secos, e se (v) plantas com abrigos foliares, por atraírem mais predadores, têm menor taxa de herbivoria foliar. Ecosystem engineering is a process by which some organisms change the distribution of resources (i.e., creating new habitats) for other species via non-trophic interactions. Shelter-building caterpillars can act as forest ecosystem engineers, because they may modulate interactions, between arthropods-plant communities, by providing the secondary settlers with several kinds of benefits. These caterpillars as ecosystem engineers influence the distribution pattern and abundances of other species facilitating the occurrence of new species indirectly, as well as increasing the diversity of arthropods on the plant. Although some studies have demonstrated that caterpillar leaf shelters amplify the diversity of arthropods on leaves (local effect), only one study evaluated the effect in the whole plant (regional effect), but this study only took into account specific guilds (i.e., herbivores); To date, no evaluated how speciose communities of tropical regions respond to the impacts of engineer caterpillars. In this study we reported, for the first time the influence of the lepidopteran shelter leafs on communities of arthropods in the tropics along both large spatial (i.e., local and regional effects) and temporal scales (i.e., different seasonal periods). Specifically, we evaluated if (i) leaf shelters benefit the occurrence of arthropods and amplify the diversity on plants, (ii) if the shelter architecture (funnel, cylinders with different diameters) interferes with the colonization of differents arthropods guilds, (iii) if the effects of shelters are local (within leafs) or extends to the whole host plant (regional effect), (iv) if plants with leaf shelters attract more arthropods in the dry periods, and if (v) plants with leaf shelters, which likely attract more predators, have lower levels of leaf herbivory. A diversidade de espécies é ameaçada principalmente pela fragmentação e pela perda de hábitat. Com o processo da fragmentação os remanescentes ficam rodeados de matrizes de diferentes vegetações, expondo os organismos às condições de um ecossistema circunvizinho diferente. Este estudo foi realizado em 18 fragmentos florestais, nove pequenos (50 a 150 ha) e nove grandes (> 200 ha), e teve o objetivo de verificar se a fragmentação florestal afeta a acarofauna associada à vegetação. Foram selecionados e marcados em oito fragmentos, quatro pequenos e quatro grandes, dez indivíduos de Actinostemon communis (Euphorbiaceae) e dez de Trichilia casaretti (Meliaceae), sendo cinco localizados na borda, e cinco no interior dos fragmentos. A avaliação do efeito da matriz nos fragmentos foi realizada com base na acarofauna presente em A. communis em seis fragmentos, dois vizinhos para cada tipo de matriz (canavial, laranjal e áreas de pastagens). Foram amostrados em média, por indivíduo, 39 folhas de A. communis e 21 folíolos de T. casaretti, em coletas trimestrais. Nas duas espécies de plantas, foram registradas 124 espécies, pertencentes a 21 famílias. As maiores abundâncias foram registradas nas coletas realizadas em outubro para A. communis, e em julho de 2007 para T. casaretti. Já a maior riqueza, para ambas as plantas, foi registrada em abril e julho, e a menor em outubro. The current knowledge about earth’s biological diversity is extremely scarce, being a major concern if we consider the current rate of destruction of natural ecosystems. The main threats to biological diversity are fragmentation and habitat loss. The process of fragmentation subjects the forest remnants to a matrix of different types of vegetation, exposing the organisms to the conditions of a different adjacent ecosystem. This study was carried out in 18 forest fragments, nine small (50 to 150 ha) and nine large (> 200 ha), and its main objective was to verify if forest fragmentation affects the mite fauna associated to the vegetation. We selected and marked in four small and four large fragments ten specimens of Actinostemon communis (Euphorbiaceae) and ten of Trichilia casaretti (Meliaceae), five of each at the forest edge and five whitin each fragment. The evaluation of the effect of the matrix in the fragments was based on the resident mite fauna in A. communis in six fragments, two neighbors for each matrix type (sugar cane crop, orange crop and areas of pastures). We sampled on average, per individual plant, 39 leaves of A. communis and 21 leaflets of T. casaretti, in 3-monthly samplings accomplished from July 2007 to April 2009. We recorded 124 species in the two plants, belonging to 21 families. The highest abundances were recorded in two samples accomplished in October in A. communis, and in July 2007 for T. casaretti. The largest mite species richness, for both plants, was recorded in April and July, and the lowest one in October. According to our results, the size, the location of plants and the adjacent matrix do influences the occurrence and abundance of mites in the fragments. O efeito da mineralização em diferentes ecossistemas e tipos de solos é uma oportunidade para avaliar mudanças nas variáveis microbiológicas e químicas do solo. Nesse trabalho, foi avaliado o efeito da mineralização da matéria orgânica do solo em duas situações: experimento: (1) em diferentes ecossistemas e (2) - em dois solos adicionados de folha e caule de soja. Experimento 1- O objetivo desse trabalho foi quantificar a mineralização da matéria orgânica nos ecossistemas de floresta natural, pastagem e cultura anual na atividade microbiana do solo. As amostras de solo foram coletadas nas áreas de floresta, pastagem e cultura anual (milho), nas profundidades de 0 –10, 10 – 20 e 20 – 40 cm. O carbono da biomassa microbiana (CBM), atividade respiratória microbiana (ARM) e o potencial de nitrificação (PN) foram determinados. Carbono orgânico total (COT), carbono solúvel (CS), ácido húmico (AH) e fúlvico (AF) e a taxa de humificação (TH) e grau de humificação (GH) também foram determinados. O modelo estatístico usado foi o de parcelas subdvididas (fator 1: ecossistemas e fator 2: profundidade) com quatro repetições. No inverno, os teores de COT e CS foram maiores no solo de floresta que no de pastagem e cultura anual de acordo com a ordem: floresta>pastagem>cultura anual e no verão prevaleceu floresta=pastagem>cultura anual. Os teores de AH e AF variaram no inverno e verão de acordo com a ordem floresta>pastagem=cultura anual. O CBM no inverno não foi influenciado pelos ecossistemas e no verão apenas o ecossistema com cultura anual apresentou menor teor de CBM. Soil organic matter mineralization can be understood as a process of degradation of organic compounds from crop residues and other organic material added into the soil. The effect of mineralization in different ecosystems and soil types is an opportunity to assess changes in microbiological and chemical variables of soil. The effect of soil organic matter mineralization was evaluated in two experiments: (1) in different ecosystems; and (2) - in two soils added with leaves and stems of soybean. Experiment 1 – the objective of this study was to quantify the mineralization of organic matter from different ecosystems including natural forest, pasture and annual crop on soil microbial activity. Soil samples were collected from areas of forest, pasture and maize, at depths of 0 -10, 10 - 20 and 20 - 40 cm. The microbial biomass carbon (MBC) contents and the activities of microbial respiratory (MRA), potential nitrification (PN) were determined. Total organic carbon (TOC), dissoLVefd carbon (CS), humic acid (HA) and fulvic (FA) contents and humification rate (TH) and degree of humification (GH) were also determined. The statistical model used was a split plot (factor 1: ecosystem and factor 2: depth) with four replicates. In winter, the TOC and CS contents were higher in the forest soil than in the pasture and annual crop soil and decreased in the following order: forest> pasture> annual crop. in the summer, the relationship was the following: forest =pasture> annual crop. The HA and FA contents varied in winter and summer in the order forest>grassland=annual crop. The CBM content was not influenced by ecosystems in winter and in summer the lowest CBM amount was showed in annual crop.
