Introduction: The literature indicates to be of vital importance the experiences and care that every child has the right for a healthy development, considering their needs for continuous relationships, physical protection, respect for individual differences, stimulus and confidence building, as the establishment of boundaries and stable communities that support cultural continuity. Objective: To identify aspects of early interactions between mothers and premature babies during hospitalization, highlighting the essential needs. Method: An exploratory study using qualitative data analysis, based on the conceptual framework of the essential needs of the child. Interviews with 14 mothers of premature babies, with thematic content analysis were performed. Results: Analysis of maternal reports showed limited interactions between mothers and their premature babies due to the physical separation, lack of opportunity of contact, and incipient professional reception, mentioning anxiety, guilt, insecurity, and difficulties to assume the care of the babies. Results suggest that the needs of the child become vulnerable. Conclusion: The early contact allows mother-child dyad by means of gaze, touch, cuddle, among others. The study reaffirms the importance of maternal interaction in the care of premature babies, in order to promote healthy child development. It is for health professionals to organize supportive care environments that prioritize the protection needs of the child and of the family.

Introduction: Playing is an important activity for the child development because it enables concept acquisition, assimilation of social roles and the understanding of affective relationships. Objective: The use of playing to stimulate the global development. Method: As a participant, there was a four-year-old child, female, without a concluded diagnosis, with global developmental delay, mainly on gestural and oral language performance, whose behavior is characterized by the poor performance on exploration and manipulation of toys and objects. The study included the child development evaluations by the use of a specific tool – Operationalized Portage Inventory, before (pre-test) and after the intervention (post-test), planned with the offer of games and symbolic and imitation plays, Activities of Daily Living training and guidelines for the child’s mother. It was held 10 sessions of individualized care. Results: The increase of behaviors in all areas, especially in self-care and in games performance and imitation. Conclusion: It follows that a systematic plan, with the Activities of Daily Living training followed by playful and symbolic play can be an action strategy of Occupational Therapy for children with similar characteristics to those presented.

Considering the obligation of registration of the medical records whenever there are consultations provided by the occupational therapist, as well as notes on the need for greater investments in initial and continuing education about this theme, this study sought to stratify data about the teaching process in the Brazilian graduation about the medical record in the field of occupational therapy in hospital contexts. This is a documentary study, being initially carried out a consultation in the E-mec system to verify the active courses of occupational therapy in Brazil. This survey consisted of the e-mailing of a questionnaire to the courses coordinations to map the theoretical subjects and occupational therapy internships in hospital settings and, consequently, the capture of the respective syllabus, which were analyzed through descriptive statistics. The final sample involved 24 questionnaires filled out by the course coordinators and 28 syllabi, being found in only 11 of them, the content linked to the research topic. It was verified that the teaching of medical record occurs especially harnessed to the practice and based on the scanty presentation of theoretical fundamentals as norms and models. The weaknesses observed imply in the tensions about the professional public discourse since the annotations in medical records constitute a way of recognition of the occupational therapeutic work and foundation of scientific researches.

Introduction: The National Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA), on 24 February 2010, adopted resolution number 7, which makes mandatory the presence of an occupational therapist as an active member of the Intensive Care Unit professional team. It is believed that the ICU scope is a small professional practice in Occupational Therapy due to the small number of publications in the literature. Objective: To describe the experience and actions developed by occupational therapy in an adult ICU and report the staff awareness reagrding this practice at a state hospital, located in the state of São Paulo. Method: This is an experience report in which we conducted document analysis to obtain data regarding actions taken by occupational therapy, as well as the application of a questionnaire with the team to understand the professionals perceptions regarding the care provided. The data obtained was processed through thematic content analysis. Results: We identified that the occupational therapy intervention transited by functional aspects and support for coping, with the recognition of these actions by the team. Conclusion: The described action consists of practices derived from the occupational therapy insertion process in an adult ICU and meets the desire to encourage the research development in this area for the promotion of debates to promote technical improvement of the profession in the care of critically ill patients.

Introduction: This study approaches the process of teaching-learning of a group of occupational therapy students to act in the care of mothers of babies at risk in the hospital context. It is linked to a community project, supported by the ‘Programa de Extensao Universitaria’. Objective: It aimed to qualify the students for understanding the risk rising, the initial mother-baby bond in the hospital environment, the monitoring of the child development and troubleshooting, as well as to see themselves as subjects of their own training. Method: Participants were six students, three teachers, 26 mothers and their 28 babies. The procedures had been developed in three articulated axles: practice, theoretical basis and invitation to reflection, each axle guided by one of three teachers. There were 65 meetings; 27 of the group of mothers, 11 of the group for theoretical overviews and 27 of the reflection group. Six students have completed their participation in the study, having achieved qualification for the care of occupational therapy to mothers of babies at risk during hospitalization and at home after discharge, as well as the co-responsibility with people and served family. All 26 mothers received care in the nursery; 25 of them in addition to the nursery, were treated at mothers group and 6 in addition to the nursery and the group, were visited at home. Conclusion: This study made it possible to contemplate two subjects with the same priority: the mother and her baby, as subjects of the attention and care of an occupational therapist and the student, as the subject of the attention and care of the teacher of occupational therapy.

The hospitalization of newborns implies fragility for the infants and their families, because they are exposed to the stress and tensions of this delicate moment. The support offered to the family, especially to mothers of hospitalized infants, may reflect in the future care provided to these children, strengthening the bond and creating a favorable environment for their healthy evelopment. The objective of this study is to report the experience of occupational therapy in a group of mothers of hospitalized neonates. The aim of this activity was to provide information and guidance on the care and interaction of these mothers with their hospitalized babies. This practice was developed through an Extension Project in Occupational Therapy carried out in a hospital of a countryside city of the state of São Paulo. The Group of Mothers was joined weekly, and dynamics of artisanal, plastic and artistic activities were offered based on the demands observed or reported verbally by the mothers in meetings at the baby nursery before the group was joined. As a result of these group meetings, improvement of the emotional condition of the mothers was observed in the day they participated in the group. We believe that this project can not only facilitate the access to information and guidance to this population, but also minimize the stress experienced by families in the hospital context, which is strange and adverse to a natural birth condition.

The purpose of this research was to characterize the routine of a pediatric nursing ward in relation tothe performance of their users on the Activity of Daily Living - ADL: personal hygiene, bathing and feeding, aswell as point out the possible uses of assistive technology concerning the ADL performance. The participants werethe following; 10 members of a nursing team, 12 caretakers and their hospitalized children with ages betweensix and twelve. The characterization of the pediatric nursing was made through semi-structured interviews andobservation developed by the researchers. Results showed that 100% (n = 10) of professionals, members ofthe nursing staff, reported performing guidance and/or supervision and/or performance of the following ADL:personal hygiene, bathing and feeding of children under their responsibility. Children remained in hospital fromthree to forty-five days and 75% (n = 9) of them reported ADL dependence in personal care, 83.3% (n = 10)in the bathing activity and 16.6 % (n = 2) in the feeding activity. Children also reported that they were helpedwith personal care, bathing and feeding by their caretakers. Caretakers identified differences in the performanceof the children’s personal hygiene (41.6%, n = 5), bathing (66.6%, n = 8) and feeding (50%, n = 6) activities.Except for slight differences in the reports of the children, parents reported similar data and the bathing activitypresented the highest level of assistance. Recommendations on the use of technology in hospital contexts wereelaborated based on these results.
