[eng] Purely organic radical-based materials constitute a promising approach for the miniaturization of devices due to their interesting optical, electronic and magnetic properties, and are good candidates to substitute scarce and/or environmentally harmful transition metal and lanthanide compounds. However, the inclusion of any type of paramagnetic molecular entity faces critical issues related to the stability of the materials and temperature range applicability. Nevertheless, advances in the last 30 years in producing stable persistent paramagnetic organic molecules provided stable enough organic radicals and polyradicals that can be used to produce molecular materials with a wide range of properties. The use of organic radicals in the development of organic (semi)conductors gives rise naturally to multifunctional materials because the spin moment associated with the unpaired electron of the radicals endows the (semi)conductor with magnetic properties. The multifunctional character of this type of material can become even more relevant when charge transport and magnetism are not considered separately. Indeed, the magnetoresistance featured by some organic conducting magnets holds great promise for the development of spintronic devices. In organic-radical based semiconductor materials, both charge and spin of the unpaired electron of the spin-carrying units play a key role. Indeed, the unpaired electrons of radicals are not only charge carriers but also the source of magnetic moments. The correct modelling of the electronic structure and the properties of these systems is thus a challenge due to the competition between charge localization or charge transport. Typically, organic molecular materials present low charge mobility, and hence, hopping model usually dominates the charge transport process. Computational studies based on hopping charge transfer models have been successfully applied in the analysis of closed-shell organic materials. However, in the literature, there are few studies that deal with the applicability of these hopping models to open-shell systems, and as far as we know, none of them tackles the calculation of electric conductivity. Bisdithiazolyl (bisDTA) radicals have furnished in recent years multiple examples of molecular materials with promising conductive and magnetic properties. This large and well-characterized family of compounds have been constructed in the quest to find a radical-based single component conductor, following different synthetic strategies that aim to enhance their electric properties whereas preventing dimerization. As a result, the bisDTA family of compounds display a wide range of conductive properties (going from insulator to metallic materials), as well as a wide range of magnetic properties (going from materials with no long-range magnetic order to materials that order antiferromagnetically or ferromagnetically). Our computational work focuses on the study of four isostructural pyridine- bridged bisDTA-multifunctional materials triggered by their magnetic and conducting properties being strongly dependent on the different S/Se ratio in the neutral radical skeleton. The electronic structure of the four bisDTA-derived materials has been characterized by means of periodic unrestricted hybrid DFT calculations. The analyses of their band structure and density of states have served as a crucial starting point for the rationalization of their electric properties and the relevant intermolecular contacts involved in the description of the charge transport process. Furthermore, the study of their open-shell ground state and the spin delocalization has proved that the molecular building blocks act as localized spin-carrying units, allowing the rationalisation of their magnetic interactions using a HDVV Hamiltonian. A systematic bottom-up strategy has been used in order to thoroughly compute all the relevant microscopic parameters that govern both: magnetism (magnetic exchange couplings) and charge transport (electronic coupling and reorganization energy). Microscopic interactions have been put to test by computing the macroscopic properties (Magnetic susceptibility, Critical Temperature and Electric Conductivity) and comparing them with the available experimental data. Furthermore, structural-property correlations analysis (ie. Magneto structural correlation maps and distance analysis) has proved that properties in these materials are sensitive to small geometry distortions., [cat] Els materials basats en radicals orgànics constitueixen una prometedora proposta per a la miniaturització de dispositius tecnològics gràcies a les seves propietats òptiques, elèctriques i magnètiques, i són bons candidats per a substituir els escassos i/o mediambientalment nocius metalls de transició i compostos derivats dels lantànids. L'ús de radicals orgànics en el desenvolupament de (semi)conductors dona lloc de forma natural a materials multifuncionals, degut a que el moment d'espín associat a l'electró desaparellat dota addicionalment al (semi)conductor amb propietats magnètiques. En aquesta tesi, ens centrarem en l'estudi de materials moleculars constituïts per radicals orgànics, en els quals, l'electró desaparellat del radical servirà a la vegada com a portador de càrrega i com a font de moment magnètic. La correcta modelització de l'estructura electrònica i les propietats en aquests sistemes es un repte pels mètodes actuals, degut a la competició entre localització de càrrega i el seu transport. Típicament, els estudis computacionals dedicats a la conductivitat elèctrica en materials moleculars orgànics fan servir el que s'anomena model de hopping, degut als baixos valors de conductivitat que presenten generalment aquests materials. Malgrat els avenços reportats amb aquests models en l'estudi de sistemes de capa tancada, hi ha pocs estudis dedicats a l'anàlisi de materials de capa oberta i cap en què es calculi la conductivitat elèctrica a partir de models de hopping. S'han seleccionat quatre materials isoestructurals d'una gran família de derivats del bisditiazolil, degut a l'ampli espectre de propietats magnètiques i elèctriques que presenten, per tal de testejar una estratègia bottom-up sistemàtica per a l'estudi dels paràmetres microscòpics rellevants en la descripció del magnetisme i la conductivitat elèctrica en materials moleculars de capa oberta. Els resultats obtinguts corroboren que l'anàlisi, mitjançant càlculs periòdics, de l'estructura electrònica, la densitat d'estats i l'estructura de bandes estableixen un punt de partida clau per a la descripció de les propietats en aquests sistemes. Mitjançant un estudi sistemàtic bottom-up s'han pogut caracteritzar tots els paràmetres microscòpics rellevants que governen tant el magnetisme com la conductivitat en aquests sistemes. Els resultats s'han pogut corroborar comparant-los amb les dades experimentals reportades. Finalment, mitjançant una anàlisi completa de les distàncies i mapes de correlació estructura-propietat s'ha evidenciat que les propietats en aquests sistemes són sensibles als subtils canvis que pot patir l'estructura cristal·lina.

[eng] The aim of this Ph.D. thesis is the synthesis and characterization of nanoparticles to understand and optimize their macroscopic properties. The manuscript is divided into seven chapters. Chapter 1 is a general introduction to nanoscience and nanotechnology and the synthesis of nanoparticles. Also, it includes a brief introduction to the properties of the magnetic, semiconductor, and plasmonic nanoparticles and their potential applications in the nanoscale. At the end of this chapter, the objectives of this work are presented. Chapter 2 is devoted to briefly introducing the characterization techniques used in this thesis such as transmission electron microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, SQUID magnetometry, and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. In addition, experimental details for each technique are included. Chapter 3 is dedicated to the optimization of the synthesis of iron oxide nanoparticles through the thermal decomposition method. In particular, it is focused on the monitoring of the effects on the structural and magnetic properties induced by the changes on the amount of 1,2-hexadecanediol and 1-octadecene, which were used as stabilizing agent and solvent, respectively. Chapter 4 is focused on a thorough structural characterization of multi-core iron oxide nanoparticles to understand their outstanding magnetic properties. In Chapter 5, the optimization of the synthesis by hot injection of Bi2S3 nanoparticles is presented. In this section, the effect of the reaction temperature and time on the morphology and crystallinity of the samples was studied. In addition, their effect on the optoelectronic properties was analyzed using ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. Chapter 6 is devoted to the combination of semiconductor Bi2S3 nanoparticles with plasmonic Au nanoparticles in order to achieve multifunctional hybrid nanostructures. In this chapter, a similar synthesis procedure to the one used in Chapter 5 with an additional step to include the Au precursor, was used. Also, the effect of the morphology of the semiconductor Bi2S3 scaffold was studied. Finally, the last chapter Chapter 7 is the collection of the major remarks of the previous chapters to conclude all the work performed in this thesis., [cat] mEn els últims vint anys, l’interès pels nanomaterials ha anat augmentant gràcies a les seves aplicacions potencials en camps com la biomedicina, l’emmagatzematge d’energia, el tractament d’aigües residuals, entre d’altres. La seva característica principal és l’aparició d’una nova fenomenologia a causa de la seva mida nanomètrica. Un dels reptes pendents, és la comprensió dels mecanismes de reacció que permeten l’optimització de la síntesi de nanopartícules per mitjà de mètodes químics. Així doncs, aquesta tesi està centrada en la síntesi i caracterització de nanopartícules magnètiques d’òxid de ferro i semiconductores de Bi2S3, i la preparació de nanoestructures híbrides de Bi2S3-Au per a aconseguir materials multifuncionals. Pel que fa a les nanopartícules d’òxid de ferro s’ha estudiat l’efecte que tenen l’1,2-hexadecandiol i 1-octadecè emprats com a agent estabilitzant i solvent, en la síntesi per descomposició tèrmica. Mitjançant caracterització estructural s’ha pogut determinar que condicionen la mida, la cristal·linitat i els estats d’oxidació de l’òxid de ferro, i això conseqüentment afecta les propietats magnètiques. També s’ha estudiat les nanopartícules multinuclears (multi-core) de maghemita, que consisteixen en grans agregats amb forma de nanoflor formats per “nuclis” (cores) d’uns 5 nm. S’ha observat que existeix una textura cristal·lina en aquests agregats que permet un comportament magnètic col·lectiu. En el cas de la síntesi de nanopartícules de Bi2S3 mitjançant el mètode d’injecció en calent, s’ha estudiat l’efecte de la temperatura d’injecció i el temps de reacció en la morfologia, cristal·linitat i resposta òptica de les nanopartícules de Bi2S3. A més, utilitzant aquestes nanopartícules de bastida s’ha afegit Au per a formar nanoestructures híbrides de Bi2S3-Au. En global, aquesta tesi demostra que un estudi dels paràmetres de síntesis permeten l’optimització de les propietats magnètiques o optoelectròniques de les nanopartícules, i apropar-nos una mica més al seu ús en aplicacions.

[eng] The urgent need to reduce our footprint on the earth environment is leading to ever more stringent commitments to decrease greenhouse gases emissions, which entails one of the greatest challenges that mankind has to tackle. As a direct consequence, it is of utmost importance to develop novel, energy-efficient and environmentally-friendly refrigeration technologies that do not require the use of climate-damaging substances. In this regard, solid-state refrigerants based on the large thermal response exhibited by a variety of materials when field-inducing a ferroic phase transition are among the best alternatives. Specifically, materials undergoing a first-order phase transition are of particular interest as the latent heat associated with the phase transition contributes on enhancing the magnitude of the thermal response. Depending on the nature of the external field that drives the phase transition one distinguishes between magnetocaloric, electrocaloric, elastocaloric or barocaloric effects. In spite of all the intensive research devoted to the study of the diverse caloric effects, there are still a series of bottlenecks to overcome. Firstly, they require the application of strong external fields in order to induce a large thermal response. Secondly, the hysteresis associated with the phase transition can drastically reduce the efficiency and compromises its reversibility. A way out of such issues can be provided by materials exhibiting a strong coupling between the structural, magnetic or electronic degrees of freedom, denoted as multicaloric materials, which allow to drive their phase transition by the combination of diverse external fields, giving rise to multicaloric effects. Despite the high potential they exhibit, the research on multicaloric materials is germinal as it requires the use of non-commercial experimental systems. In this dissertation, we have focused on the study of materials displaying a magnetostructural first- order phase transition with a strong coupling between the structural and magnetic degrees of freedom. For such purpose, we have used distinct purpose-built calorimetric and adiabatic thermometry systems to investigate their caloric and multicaloric effects by direct methods. We have concentrated on two distinct families of multicaloric materials: Fe-Rh and Ni-Mn-based Heusler alloys. Our research is aimed at thoroughly characterizing the diverse advantages of multicaloric effects: showing that lower driving fields are required, that the operating temperature windows of the materials can be enlarged and discussing how their inherent hysteresis can be mastered or even exploited., [cat] La necessitat urgent de reduir la nostra empremta en el clima s’està materialitzant en compromisos globals per disminuir l’emissió de gasos d’efecte hivernacle que cada cop son més estrictes, representat avui en dia un dels majors reptes que la humanitat ha d’afrontar. Com a conseqüència directa, és de la màxima importància desenvolupar noves tecnologies de refrigeració que siguin eficients i respectuoses amb el medi ambient. En aquest sentit, entre les millors alternatives es troben els refrigerants en estat sòlid basats en materials que presenten una resposta tèrmica gran quan s’indueix una transició de fase ferroica mitjançant un camp extern. En concret, són d’especial interès els materials que presenten una transició de fase de primer ordre, ja que la calor latent associada a la transició de fase incrementa la magnitud de la resposta tèrmica. Depenent de la naturalesa del camp extern que s’utilitza per induir la transició de fase, es distingeix entre els efectes magnetocalòric, electrocalòric, elastocalòric o barocalòric. Malgrat els grans esforços dedicats en l’estudi dels diversos efectes calòrics, hi ha una sèrie d’obstacles que cal superar. En primer lloc, es necessiten camps intensos per induir una resposta tèrmica gran. En segon lloc, la histèresi associada a la transició de fase pot reduir dràsticament la seva eficiència i comprometre la reversibilitat de l’efecte calòric. Una possible sortida a aquests problemes pot venir donada pels materials que presenten un fort acoblament entre els graus de llibertat estructural, magnètic o electrònic, anomenats materials multicalòrics, ja que permeten que la seva transició de fase s’indueixi mitjançant la combinació de diversos camps externs, donant lloc als anomenats efectes multicalòrics. Malgrat l’alt potencial que presenten a l’hora d’abordar algunes de les mancances que s’han posat de manifest ens els diversos efectes calòrics, l’interès en la seva recerca és molt recent ja que requereix l’ús de sistemes experimentals no comercials. En aquesta tesi, ens hem centrat en l’estudi de materials que presenten transicions magnetoestructurals de primer ordre amb un fort acoblament entre els graus de llibertat magnètic i estructural. Amb aquest propòsit, hem utilitzat diversos dispositius experimentals dissenyats ad hoc que permeten realitzar mesures calorimètriques o termomètriques sota la influència de camp magnètic i esforç uniaxial per tal de caracteritzar-ne els efecte calòrics i multicalòrics mitjançant mètodes directes. Ens hem centrat en dues famílies de materials multicalòrics: Fe-Rh i aliatges tipus Heusler de base Ni-Mn. La recerca duta a terme s’ha centrat en caracteritzar a fons els diversos avantatges que presenten els efectes multicalòrics: demostrant que requereixen camps de menor intensitat per induir una resposta tèrmica gran, que permeten ampliar el rang de temperatura de treball dels materials o que proporcionen estratègies per controlar o fins i tot aprofitar la histèresi associada a la transició de fase.

[eng] Spin crossover (SCO) complexes and single-molecule magnets (SMMs) are promising prototypes that can reach magnetic bistability within the molecular scale required for data storage. Despite the extensive library of versatile compounds exhibiting SCO and SMM behaviour, continuous growth in the knowledge of such molecular magnetic complexes is pursued to understand its fundamental insights. Here, we contribute on unveiling crucial aspects on their magnetic foundations. Starting from the synthesis of 3-bpp (bpp: 2-(pyrazol-1-yl)-6-(1H-pyrazol-3- yl)pyridine) derivatives, diverse mononuclear compounds of Fe(II) were accessed. The magnetic study of these compounds offered fruitful opportunities to unveil specific insights related to the SCO (Chapters 2 to 4). In chapter 2, we can drastically modulate the SCO temperature for a series of three Fe(II) derivatives of 1,3-bpp: [Fe(1,3-bpp)2](ClO4)2 (1), [Fe(met1,3-bpp)2](ClO4)2 (2), [Fe(dimet1,3-bpp)2] (ClO4)2 (3). The direct influence of the methyl substituents on the SCO temperature (with TSCO (3) > TSCO (1) > TSCO (2)), was observed through by magnetic studies in sold-state. In solution, the crystal packing is excluded as a contributor to their overall macroscopic properties, being the T1/2 tuned through ligand design. In Chapter 3, we studied the metal composition effects on the SCO thermal transition of compound [Fe(met1,3-bpp)2](ClO4)2 (2). For such purpose, the isostructural [Zn(met1,3-bpp)2](ClO4)2 (4) complex and the series [Fe1-xZnx(Me-1,3bpp)2](ClO4)2 (5x; 0.1, 0.153, 0.219, 0.333, 0.412, 0.476, 0.559 and 0.636) were synthesized. The structural study unveils the gradual evolution of the crystallographic parameters with the metal composition at three levels: at the local, at the level of intermolecular interactions and in terms of the crystal lattice parameters. We observed a decrease on the SCO temperature and an increase of the residual HS Fe (II) ascribed to the negative chemical pressure induced by the Zn(II). We quenched the samples at 2K, observing that the relaxation temperature of the metastable state, T(TIESST), is unaffected by the composition. In Chapter 4, an unprecedented heteroleptic compound, [FeL(bpp)](ClO4)2 (6), showing four markedly different magnetic responses at the same temperature range (300-340K) near room temperature is presented. The system undergoes a succession of irreversible phase transitions 6·ac → 6α → 6β → 6γ in the solid-state upon several thermal cycles. An intimate connection between the SCO and structural phase transitions (SPTs) through single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) is described. Compound (7·ac) is presented as good candidate for similar study. We tried to elucidate some insights on the importance of the N-H interactions within complex 6 by using its methylated derivative. Nevertheless, it was not possible since homoleptic [FeL2](ClO4)2·2H2O (8), [Fe(Me2bbp)2](ClO4)2 (9) complexes and the [FeL(H2O)2(C3H6O)](ClO4)2 ·2C3H6O (10) were obtained. The design of polytopic ligands containing pyrazolyl-pyridine moieties is discussed in chapter 5. Five new organic ligands (H2L3 to H2L7) were synthesized and fully characterized. A new promising synthetic route to access multitopic ligands, which allows to obtain satisfactorily ligand H2L8, is also proposed. A triple-stranded helicate [Co2(H2L)3]4+ (11) containing Co(II), which often behaves as SMM, was synthesized (Chapter 6). The metal displays an adequate geometry between the trigonal prismatic (TP) and the trigonal antiprismatic (TAP) to study its small axial anisotropy through solution paramagnetic 1H NMR and solid-state magnetometry. The study of the [CoZn(H2L)3]4+ (13) helicate allows to discard the intramolecular magnetic interactions as a source of the low magnetic anisotropy. Two new [Fe9] grid-like clusters composed of an unprecedented flat nanosheet with the formula [Fe9O4(OH)8] as an inorganic core are described in Chapter 7. Both polynuclear coordination complexes with the proposed molecular formula Fe9O4(OH)10(H2L2)6(H2O)4](BF4)5 (17) and [Fe9O4Cl6(OH)8(H2L2)6]4(Cl) (18) display an interesting magnetic behaviour. Considering its first formation together with triple-stranded helicates with the general formula Fe(C2O4)3@[Fe2(H2L2)3] (14, 15 and 16), their obtaining and isolation is discussed. In chapter 8, we describe the first attempt on identifying the dynamics of a broken symmetry states, [HS-LS] and [LS-HS], of a binuclear X@[Fe2(H2L)3]3+ (19 and 20) helicates on the millisecond timescale by using paramagnetic NMR spectroscopy. New synthetically addressed jellyfish-like compounds, ([X@Fe(H2L5)3]2)3+ (24 to 27) were obtained by using the appropriate ligand H2L5 with additional aromatic groups concerning the original ditopic H2L ligand. Such compounds are attractive for studying in solution., [spa] Los complejos de transición de espín (SCO) y los imanes moleculares (SMM) son prototipos prometedores que pueden alcanzar la biestabilidad magnética dentro de la escala molecular requerida para el almacenamiento de datos. A pesar de la extensa biblioteca de compuestos versátiles que exhiben estos comportamientos, actualmente, se siguen estudiando para comprender sus propiedades fundamentales. En esta tesis contribuimos en desvelar aspectos cruciales relacionadas con su fundamento magnético. A partir de la síntesis de derivados de 3-(bpp: 2-(pyrazol-1-yl)-6-(1H-pyrazol-3- yl)pyridine), se accedió a diversos compuestos mononucleares de Fe(II). El estudio magnético de estos compuestos ofrece una valiosa oportunidad para el análisis y comprensión de efectos específicos relacionados con el comportamiento de SCO en términos de: • Ajuste de la transición de SCO por diseño de ligando (capítulo 2) para la serie de complejos: [Fe(1,3-bpp)2](ClO4)2 (1), [Fe(met-1,3-bpp)2](ClO4)2 (2) y [Fe(dimet1,3-bpp)2] (ClO4)2 (3). • Estudio de los efectos cooperativos (capítulo 3) del complejo [Fe(met- 1,3bpp)2](ClO4)2 (2) usando los complejos isoestructurales [Zn(met1,3- bpp)2](ClO4)2 (4) y la serie de complejos [Fe1-xZnx(Me-1,3bpp)2](ClO4)2 (5x; 0.1, 0.153, 0.219, 0.333, 0.412, 0.476, 0.559 and 0.636). • Polimorfismo y estudio de la íntima relación entre los datos cristalográficos y magnéticos sobre una sucesión de transformaciones en estado sólido (Capítulo 4) del complejo [FeL(bpp)](ClO4)2 (6). El diseño de ligandos politópicos que contienen unidades pirazolil-piridina se analiza en el capítulo 5. Se sintetizaron y caracterizaron cinco nuevos ligandos orgánicos (H2L3-H2L7). También se propone una nueva ruta sintética prometedora para acceder a ligandos multitópicos, que permite obtener satisfactoriamente el ligando H2L8. A partir de estos ligandos se han sintetizado diversos tipos de compuestos supramoleculares con interesantes propiedades magnéticas: • [Co2(H2L)3]4+ (11) y [CoZn(H2L)3]4+ (13) para el estudio del comportamiento de SMM mediante 1H NMR paramagnético en solución (Capítulo 6). • Fe9O4(OH)10(H2L2)6(H2O)4](BF4)5 (17) y [Fe9O4Cl6(OH)8(H2L2)6]4(Cl) (18) con una estructura cuadriculada sin precedentes formada por el núcleo inorgánico, [Fe9O4(OH)8], sustentado por seis H2L2 ligandos (Capítulo 7). • Complejos binucleares de Fe(II), X@[Fe2(H2L)3]3+ (19-20) estudiados mediante el uso de espectroscopía de RMN paramagnética. Se presenta el primer intento en identificar la dinámica de sus estados de simetría-rota, [HS-LS] y [LS-HS]. Se obtuvieron nuevos compuestos dimerizados ([X@Fe(H2L5)3]2)3+ (24-27) atractivos para el estudió magnético en solución (Capítulo 8).

[eng] In this thesis we investigate the structure formation and the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of driven and active magnetic colloids. The interactions in our system were tuned in situ by using external fields, with the aim of finding novel approaches to drive and engineer these microparticles into a rich variety of microstructures. The colloids formed chains and clusters able to transport cargos, space-filling gels and self-healing crystals. Moreover, we demonstrated the bidirectional transport of paramagnetic particles on top of a structured magnetic substrate. Because of their associated length-scale, colloids are experimentally accessible with traditional optical microscope techniques. We analysed the data extracted from digital video microscopy and used such information to infer the particle dynamics. Colloids have been proven to be excellent model systems for structures across different length scales that are more difficult to observe, such as collections of atoms and molecules. Furthermore, they are helpful test-beds to investigate fluid dynamics at low Reynolds number and can form artificial micromachines that are essential for the realization of disparate functional tasks at the microscale., [cat] En aquesta tesi hem investigat la dinàmica fora de l'equilibri de col·loides magnètics i el seu comportament individual i col·lectiu. Controlant les interaccions utilitzant camps magnètics externs i l'activitat química de col·loides especialment sintetitzats, vam construir microdispositius nedadors capaços de transportar altres materials i formar cadenes, agrupacions, gels, i cristalls amb l'habilitat de reordenar-se. A més, vam demostrar el transport bidireccional de partícules paramagnètiques sobre un substrat magnètic. A causa de la seva mida, els col·loides són fàcilment accessibles experimentalment i es poden observar amb microscopis òptics tradicionals. Mitjançant tècniques de videomicroscopia, vam obtenir informació sobre la dinàmica fora d'equilibri dels sistemes estudiats. S'ha demostrat que els col·loides poden ser sistemes model excel·lents per estructures amb diferents escales de longitud que són més difícils d’observar. D'altra banda, els col·loides ens van ajudar a comprendre la dinàmica de fluids a baix nombre de Reynolds, el que té aplicacions en estudis de microfluídica. Aquest treball és un pas més que ens acosta a trobar un microdispositiu òptim basat en partícules col·loïdals per manipular, transportar i controlar processos a aquestes escales.

[eng] Cucurbiturils are known to present potential applications in molecular recognition, self- assembly, and nanotechnology. The discovery of ultra-high affinity CB–guest complexes with binding constant values similar than those found in natural complexes beckoned the attention of many groups, that focused their research in the functionalization of cucurbiturils in order to modify their structure and properties, to enhance their solubility, and to provide different functional groups for further transformations. In fact, cucurbiturils have been supported onto different solid surfaces such as gold surface, polymer beads, or nanoparticles. Iron is a bioactive metal with magnetic properties and low toxicity to mammalian cells. The formation of 10 nm magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) of iron oxide (Fe3O4) can be achieved in an affordable and easily reproducible manner by thermal decomposition. This small size of nanoparticles provides a double advantage: first, biodegradability, because particles up to 100 nm can be phagocytosed through liver cells; second, superparamagnetic behavior, so that they become magnetized upon exposure to a magnetic field but have no permanent magnetization once the field is turned off. Prompted by the breadth of possible applications provided by cucurbiturils and our previous experience immobilizing organic molecules on MNPs of Fe3O4 and polystyrene resin (PR) (generally, to covalently immobilize catalysts for the preparation of easily recoverable and recyclable catalysts), we speculated that covalently attached cucurbiturils onto MNPs could open up new routes concerning drug delivery and biocatalysis, enable applications in many areas including sensor, transport, separation, and nanomaterials. Hence, the first research project included in this dissertation (chapter II), unveils the development of polystyrene and magnetic nanoparticles coated with a cucurbituril layer. The intrinsic properties of these compounds have been tested on the extraction of selected molecules (guests that bind to cucurbiturils). Also, in this chapter, the preparation and characterization of a library of these novel compounds—that exhibit a potential use in molecular recognition, transport, and separation—is described. The second project, described in chapter III, illustrates the synthesis of catalysts tagged with an adamantyl moiety to enhance their affinity towards cucurbiturils—for their selective extraction from the reaction media. This is achieved by covalent linking of the cucurbituril receptor to the superparamagnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles to allow magnetic decantation. These compounds were prepared, and their catalytic activity and reusability were tested: first, on the model aldol reaction between ketones and benzaldehydes; secondly, on the enantioselective Robinson annulation with the well-established Wieland-Miescher ketone. Chapter IV showcases the preparation of a quaternary amino derivatizing reagent decorated with an adamantyl moiety. This reagent reacts with ketone-containing steroids such as testosterone. Upon reaction, the resulting derivative can be selectively extracted from the solution mixture and driven away by the magnetically powered nanoparticles. Finally, chapter V provides some computational insights on the nature and the strength of the cucurbit[7]uril interactions with some adamantyl-based guests. The studies are built on novel and unprecedented computational models able to reproduce experimental procedures on the determination of enthalpic and entropic changes. Therefore, the main goal of the present thesis is the development of novel magnetically powered nanodevices for the efficient and selective extraction of chemical cargos. Supramolecular chemistry—especial emphasis on cucurbiturils—will play a central lead in this manuscript due to the endogenous chemical properties of the supramolecules, and the robust and modulable nature of their guests. Moreover, we will cover the entire manufacture of the nanodevices or chemical shuttles, their potential use in asymmetric catalysis, and their applicability in molecular recognition and enrichment., [cat] El primer projecte de recerca, inclòs al capítol II, revela el desenvolupament de poliestirè i nanopartícules magnètiques recobertes amb una capa de cucurbituril. Durant aquesta secció, s’han provat les propietats intrínseques d’aquests compostos per a l’extracció de molècules seleccionades (hostes) que s’uneixen als cucurbiturils. A més, en aquest capítol, s’ha fet un esforç per caracteritzar amb precisió una varietat d’aquests nous compostos que presenten un potencial ús en el reconeixement molecular, el transport i la separació. El segon projecte, descrit al capítol III, il·lustra la síntesi de catalitzadors etiquetats amb un fragment adamantil per millorar la seva afinitat cap als cucurbiturils, i promoure la seva extracció selectiva. Això s’aconsegueix per mitjà de l’enllaç covalent entre el receptor de cucurbituril i les nanopartícules superparamagnètiques (Fe3O4), que permetent la decantació magnètica del sistema format. Una varietat d’aquests compostos s’ha preparat, i la seva activitat catalítica així com la reutilitzabilitat s’han posat també a prova: primer, en la reacció aldòlica entre cetones i benzaldehids; després, en la reacció enantioselectiva de Robinson, amb la ben consolidada cetona de Wieland i Miescher. Al capítol IV es mostra la preparació d’un reactiu derivatitzant que inclou una amina quaternària i un grup adamantil. Aquesta molècula presenta reactivitat amb esteroides que contenen cetones com la testosterona. Després de reaccionar, el derivat resultant es pot extreure selectivament de la barreja de solució i desplaçar-lo a parer, fent ús de les propietats magnètiques de les nanopartícules. [eng] Nanoscience and Nanotechnology have become research areas that promote the design and fabrication of novel devices with a number of different applications with the aim of satisfying the growing demand of the society regarding technological advances. The breakthrough in some of these subjects directly associates with the development of specific molecular systems with new and advanced features, applicable toward the development, at the nanoscale, of efficient materials that could act as molecular switches or active components in memory devices, transistors or sensors, among others. In this regard, promising molecular-based systems, to be applicable in these fields, are the so-called Curcuminoids (CCMoids). These molecules can present versatile structures, displaying always (i) a conjugated chain of seven carbon atoms, which confers the molecules with reasonable conductive properties; (ii) a β-diketone group located in the middle of the chain, that opens the possibility of coordinating with metallic centers, and (iii) two aromatic groups, located on both sides of the molecules that add fluorescent, redox active and optical properties, among others. The main goal of this thesis rest on the design and synthesis of new CCMoids that can be applied in different areas of nanoscience. Thus, different modifications on their structure were carried out in order to achieve interesting properties. The results obtained in this work have been grouped in five different sections; corresponding each one to a different area. This way: (1) Molecular Magnetism: the first section is focused on the search of systems which display interesting magnetic properties, especially systems with single molecule magnet behavior. Thus, magneto-structural studies were performed by the synthesis of several coordination compounds using magnetic metallic centers (CoII and NiII) coordinate with a CCMoid ligand called 9Accm. In addition, a study of the influence of the paramagnetic centers on the fluorescent properties derived from the CCMoid ligand was also performed together with deposition studies on HOPG (highly oriented pyrolytic graphite). (2) Molecular Electronic: the second section focuses on the study of the electronic transport of a new CCMoid system within a three terminal nanodevice containing few layer graphene (FLG) electrodes. This study centers in the improvement of the conductive properties of a previously measured CCMoid system, in which 9Accm was used as a nanowire in a molecular transistor by π-π stacking interactions with the graphene electrodes. The new CCMoid contains an elongated conjugated skeleton that improves the anchoring properties of the final system with the FLG electrodes. (3) Molecular Sensors: the third section is based on the immobilization of fluorescent CCMoids on surfaces and their used as chemical sensors for boron ions. The immobilization was carried out on functionalized SiO2 surfaces by the use of the Microcontact printing technique (μ-CP) that allowed the creation of fluorescent micropatterns on the surfaces. In addition, studies regarding the coordination of boron to the CCMoids attached on the surfaces and the effect in their fluorescent properties was performed to explore they as chemical sensors. (4) Molecular Host-Guest Chemistry: the fourth section is focused on the fabrication of supramolecular host-guest systems based on CCMoids. In the first part, a study of the CCMoid acting as a guest was performed. In this case, a novel CCMoid molecule that contain a ferrocene group is inserted in different host cavities (cyclodextrin and cucurbituril). This study was performed in solution and on Au surfaces. On the other hand, the synthesis of another CCMoid was carried out to be used as a host, being the main ligand in the formation of molecular cages. (5) Molecular Donor/Acceptor Chemistry: the fifth section is based on the study of the donor/acceptor properties of additional CCMoids with the idea of using them as components of organic photovoltaics cells (OPVs). For this study, the synthesis of two families of CCMoids with acceptor and donor moieties on the sides of the molecules was performed, and additional variations on their structure were achieved to assess their influence on the optical and electronic properties of the systems., [spa] La nanociencia y la nanotecnología se han erigido como las áreas encargadas en diseñar y fabricar nuevos dispositivos cada vez más potentes y rápidos con el fin de satisfacer la creciente demanda tecnológica de nuestra sociedad. Una familia de moléculas muy prometedoras para ser aplicable en estos campos es la conocida como Curcuminoides (CCMoides) debido a su gran versatilidad. Esta tesis se centra en el diseño y síntesis de nuevos CCMoides para su posterior aplicación en diferentes campos de la nanociencia. Para ello, se han llevado a cabo distintas modificaciones en sus estructuras con el fin de conseguir propiedades interesantes. Los resultados obtenidos han sido agrupados en 5 secciones, cada uno de los cuales corresponde a un área de investigación diferente: (1) Magnetismo Molecular: La primera sección se centra en la búsqueda de sistemas que presenten propiedades de imán molecular. Para ello, se llevó a cabo un estudio magneto- estructural mediante la síntesis de varios compuestos de coordinación utilizando centros metálicos magnéticos (CoII y NiII) coordinados con el ligando CCMoide llamado 9Accm. (2) Electrónica Molecular: La segunda sección se centra en el estudio del transporte electrónico de un nuevo sistema CCMoide como parte activa de un sistema de tres terminales que actúa como transistor molecular de efecto campo. (3) Sensor Molecular: La tercera sección se centra en la inmovilización de CCMoides fluorescentes en superficies funcionalizadas que puedan actuar como sensores químicos de boro. Esta inmovilización se llevara a cabo en superficies de SiO2 mediante el uso de la técnica Microcontact printing. (4) Huésped-Anfitrión Molecular: La cuarta sección se centra en la fabricación de sistemas supramoleculares huésped-anfitrión. El primer estudio se centra en la utilización de ligandos CCMoide (huésped), que interaccionan con dos sistemas (ciclodextrina y cucurbiturilo) (anfitriones). Por otro lado, se realizó la síntesis de un nuevo CCMoide con el objetivo de que pudiese actuar como anfitrión mediante la formación de cajas moleculares. (5) Dador-Aceptor Molecular: La quinta sección se centra en el estudio de las propiedades aceptoras/dadoras de CCMoides para que puedan ser utilizados en la fabricación de celdas fotovoltaicas orgánicas (OPVs), llevándose a cabo la síntesis de dos familias de CCMoides con grupos aceptores y dadores.

[cat] Amb l’objectiu d’obtenir materials moleculars amb una o més propietats físiques tals com magnètiques, luminescents i/o quirals en aquest treball s’han obtingut nous compostos de coordinació basats en metalls de transició, concretament amb manganès, o bé amb ions lantànid trivalents Ln(III). Les propietats físiques observades en aquests complexos deriven dels propis metalls, dels lligands orgànics coordinats a aquests o bé es deuen a la cooperativitat metall-lligands. Treballant amb ions manganès i lligands salicilaldoxima (H2-salox) i azidur s’ha obtingut el compost octanuclear (Pr4N)2[MnII2MnIII6(μ3-O)2(μ1,1- N3)6(salox)6Cl2(H2O)2]·(H2O). L’estudi magnètic revela un comportament ferromagnètic global amb estat d’espín fonamental màxim de S = 17 i resposta SMM. L’estat S fonamental observat és degut a que l’acoblament ferromagnètic entre els ions Mn(II) (amb entorn tetraèdric) i Mn(III) via el pont azidur amb mode de coordinació end-on és dominant respecte a les interaccions entre els ions Mn(III) dins dels triangles. Per altra banda, s’han presentat sis compostos obtinguts a partir de diferents lligands H2-R-salox (R= H per H2-salox; 3-CH3 per H2-3-Me-salox; CH3 per H2- Me-salox; CH2CH3 per H2-Et-salox) i anions 9-antracecarboxilat (9-AC) i que presenten la unitat triangular {Mn3O(R-salox)3}-. Quan s’ha treballat amb lligands H2-salox i H2-3-Me-salox, s’ha observat que la topologia del compost obtingut canvia en funció de si hi ha presència d’ions Na+ o Cs+ degut al diferent valor de radi iònic entre aquests dos cations alcalins. Aquesta dependència estructural no s’ha observat en emprar lligands H2-Me- salox i H2-Et-salox. L’estudi magnètic revela que en tots els compostos es compleix la correlació magneto-estructural que relaciona la torsió intramolecular Mn-N-O-Mn amb el bescanvi magnètic dins aquestes unitats. S’ha observat comportament d’imant molecular en els compostos derivats dels lligands H2-Me-salox i H2-Et-salox. En tots aquests compostos s’han observat propietats luminescents derivades de la presència del lligand 9-AC. En la segona línia de recerca presentada en aquest treball, s’han obtingut nous compostos de coordinació de Ln(III) amb presència dels àcids carboxílics 9- antracecarboxílic (H-9-AC), el 2-fluorobenzoic (H-2-FBz), els (R)/(S)-(±)-2-(6- metoxi-2-naftil)propiònic (R- o S-HL1) i els (R)/(S)-(±)-2-fenilpropiònic (R- o S- HL2) i lligands secundaris N-donadors 1,10-fenantrolina (phen), 2,2’-bipiridina (bpy) o 2,2’:6’,2’’-terpiridina (terpy). En aquests tipus de compostos s’ha buscat que les propietats luminescents derivin de la sensibilització de les transicions f-f dels ions Ln(III) per part dels diferents lligands orgànics coordinats a aquests. En alguns casos s’han observat diferents estructures sota una mateixa combinació de lligands a causa de la contracció del radi iònic dels lantànids. Entre els diferents compostos de coordinació obtinguts s’ha demostrat la coexistència de propietats magnètiques i luminescents per [Ln2(9-AC)6(bpy)2] (Ln(III) = Nd, Er i Yb), [Ln2(9-AC)6(phen)2] (Ln(III) = Er i Yb), [Ln(9- AC)3(terpy)(H2O)]·H2O·DMF (Ln(III) = Er i Yb), [Ln2(2-FBz)4(NO3)2(phen)2] (Ln(III) = Nd, Dy i Er), [Yb2(2-FBz)6(phen)2] i [Ln2(2-FBz)6(terpy)2]·H-2-FBz·H2O (Ln = Nd, Dy, Er i Yb). La presència de les espècies enantiomèricament pures dels àcids carboxílics quirals R- o S-HL1 o bé R- o S-HL2 ha derivat en la obtenció dels compostos amb comportament imant, luminescents i quirals [Ln2(R-L1)6(phen)2]·3DMF·H2O i [Ln2(S-L1)6(phen)2]·3DMF·H2O (Ln(III) = Nd i Dy), [Nd2(R-L2)6(phen)2]·2.5S-HL2 [Nd2(S-L2)6(phen)2]·2.5S-HL2, [Yb2(R-L2)4(NO3)2(phen)2]·2R-HL2 i [Yb2(R- L2)4(NO3)2(phen)2]·2R-HL2. A més, també a causa de la quiralitat dels compostos induïda pels lligands carboxilat, s’ha observat luminescència circularment polaritzada en estat sòlid en els compostos [Eu2(R-L1)6(phen)2]·3DMF·H2O, [Eu2(S-L1)6(phen)2]·3DMF·H2O i en [Ln2(R-L2)6(phen)2]·2.5S-HL2 [Ln2(S- L2)6(phen)2]·2.5S-HL2 (Ln(III) = Eu i Tb)., [eng] The aim of this work is to obtain molecular materials that display one or more physical properties such as magnetism, luminescence and/or chirality. Based on coordination chemistry, we have synthesised new compounds with transition metals or with lanthanide trivalent ions (Ln(III)). The physical properties observed in these compounds arise from the metals, from the ligands coordinated to them or from the metal-ligand cooperativity. We have isolated a MnII2MnIII6 compound using salicyladoxime (H2-salox) and azide (N3-) ligands. Magnetic study of this compound reveals a spin ground state of S = 17, the highest possible for this system. The stabilization of this maximum magnetic ground state is due to the dominance of the ferromagnetic exchange between the Mn(II) and Mn(III) through the N3- ligand. Continuing with manganese, a series of {Mn3O(R-salox)3}- based compounds have been obtained using H2-salox, H2-3-Me-salox, H2-Me-salox or H2-Et-salox ligands and the sodium or caesium 9-anthracenecarboxilate (9-AC) salt. A structural dependence is observed when using H2-salox or H2-3-Me-salox with Na+ or Cs+ carboxylate salt. The magnetic properties of the obtained compounds are strongly dependent on the R- group of the R-salox ligand. Luminescence properties have been observed in these compounds. On the other hand, several new Ln(III) coordination complexes have been obtained combining different carboxylic acids [H-9-AC, 2-fluorobenzoic acid (H- 2-FBz), R/S-2-(6-methoxy-2-naphthyl)propionic acid (R- o S-HL1) or R/S- phenylpropionic acid] with different N-donor secondary ligands (2,2’- bipyridine, 1,10’-phenanthroline or 2,2’:6’,2’’-terpyridine). Under these conditions, we have obtained compounds [Ln2(9-AC)6(bpy)2] (Ln(III) = Nd, Er and Yb), [Ln2(9-AC)6(phen)2] (Ln(III) = Er and Yb), [Ln(9- AC)3(terpy)(H2O)]·H2O·DMF (Ln(III) = Er and Yb), [Ln2(2-FBz)4(NO3)2(phen)2] (Ln(III) = Nd, Dy and Er), [Yb2(2-FBz)6(phen)2] and [Ln2(2-FBz)6(terpy)2]·H-2- FBz·H2O (Ln = Nd, Dy, Er and Yb) which display magnetic and luminescent properties. The use of pure enantiomeric species of R- o S-HL1 or R- o S-HL2 led to the isolation of magnetic, luminescence and chiral compounds [Ln2(R- L1)6(phen)2]·3DMF·H2O and [Ln2(S-L1)6(phen)2]·3DMF·H2O (Ln(III) = Nd and Dy), [Nd2(R-L2)6(phen)2]·2.5S-HL2, [Nd2(S-L2)6(phen)2]·2.5S-HL2 and [Yb2(R- L2)4(NO3)2(phen)2]·2R-HL2 and [Yb2(R-L2)4(NO3)2(phen)2]·2R-HL2. Moreover, chiral compounds [Eu2(R-L1)6(phen)2]·3DMF·H2O, [Eu2(S- L1)6(phen)2]·3DMF·H2O and [Ln2(R-L2)6(phen)2]·2.5S-HL2 [Ln2(S-L2)6(phen)2]·2.5S-HL2 (Ln(III) = Eu and Tb) display Circularly Polarized Luminescence.

[eng] This PhD thesis has been developed in the Molecular Magnetism Group of the University of Barcelona. As its name indicates, the Molecular Magnetism Group is mostly interested in the magnetic study of coordination complexes, mainly with d metals but also with lanthanide cations, which permit magnetic studies but also luminescence studies, which could allow the syntheses of multifunctional products. The group has also interest in supramolecular chemistry and chirality. The main objective of the thesis was the synthesis, magnetic and spectroscopic characterization of coordination complexes derived from chiral Schiff bases, used as organic ligands, and, due to the chirality of the organic ligands, the study of the chirality transfer from ligand to metal. This series of organic ligands, have been combined with different metals: With 3d metals, like manganese, iron or nickel, but also with 4f metals or with combinations of both types. The metals used as paramagnetic cations have been used in the search of Single Molecule Magnet (SMM) behavior and also to develop a series of magnetostructural correlations. In other cases, the interesting part of the final product was related with their supramolecular chemistry. All the products in this thesis have been magnetically characterized to try to elucidate their kind of magnetic interaction (ferromagnetic, antiferromagnetic or ferromagnetic), and, in the case that they present SMM behavior, to study their slow relaxation of the magnetization. Moreover, for complexes derived from lanthanide cations which are highly anisotropic due to the ion itself, other characterization techniques have been performed: Cantilever Torque Magnetometry (CTM) for the complete resolution of the magnetic anisotropy, and spectroscopic techniques like Electronic Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR), in X and W bands, in powder and monocrystal samples. Due to the chiral nature of the used organic ligands, all the products in this thesis have been characterized by Electronic Circular Dichroism (ECD). This technique has been used to demonstrate the chirality of the products and the differences in the solution vs. solid structures. The induced chirality in the final products due to the use of enantiopure reactants could allow the future study of the derived properties, like for example the emission of polarized light due to the presence of the lanthanide cation in a chiral environment, or the ferroelectricity, which should achieve the multiferrocity in the final materials. The thesis contains a final chapter with a discussion about how the different ligands behaved with the different metals, about how the chirality of the reactants affected the final supramolecular structure, demonstrating that the chiral and racemic forms of a reactant not always yield in the same final structure, and about how the metals behave magnetically in each situation., [cat] L’objectiu principal de la tesi ha estat la síntesi i caracterització, magnètica i espectroscòpica, de complexes de coordinació derivats de bases de Schiff quirals. Les bases de Schiff han estat sintetitzades, o bé a partir d’una diamina condensada amb dos grups aldehid, o bé a partir d’un aminoalcohol condensat amb un grup aldehid. Aquesta sèrie de lligands orgànics, s’ha combinat amb diferents metalls, 3d¸4f o barreges dels dos. En d’altres casos, la part que ens ha interessat del complexes sintetitzats ha estat la seva química supramolecular. Tots els productes has estat caracteritzats magnèticament, per intentar esbrinar el seu tipus d’interacció magnètica (acoblament ferromagnètic, ferrimagnètic o antiferromagnètic) i, en cas de que presentessin propietats d’imant unimolecular, per esbrinar com era la seva relaxació magnètica. A més a més, per als compostos derivats de ions lantànid, que presenten una elevada anisotropia associada al catió, s’han dut a terme altres tècniques de caracterització magnètica, com l’anomenada Cantilever Torque Magnetomentry (CTM), i de caracterització espectroscòpica amb Ressonància Paramagnètica Electrònica (EPR) en banda X i en banda W, tan de compostos en pols com de monocristall. Degut a la naturalesa quiral dels lligands utilitzats, s’han pogut caracteritzar tots els productes mitjançant Dicroisme Circular Electrònic (ECD), que ens ha servit per demostrar tant la quiralitat dels productes com la seva estructura comparada en sòlid i en dissolució. La quiralitat induïda als productes mitjançant l’ús de reactius enentiomèricament purs, ha de permetre en el futur estudiar-ne les propietats que se’n deriven, com per exemple l’emissió de llum polaritzada deguda també a la presencia del catió lantànid, o la ferroelectricitat, que permetria aconseguir la síntesis de compostos multiferroics.

[eng] The goal of this work is to investigate the magnetic deflagration phenomena in two very different magnetic systems, using two very different experimental techniques. In the first chapter of this dissertation I introduce the concept of magnetic deflagra-tion, together with a description of the state of the art of the field. In the second chapter of this thesis I present the study of magnetic deflagration in single crystals of the prototypical single molecule magnet Mn12—ac, using the magneto-optical imaging method; never done before. In the chapter the reader will find out that, effectively, the deflagration process can be explored using this technique. The second part of the thesis include the other five chapters. Such a difference in length between both parts is due two factors. The first factor is that the Mn12—ac is a very well known system, with few new experiments to study; while on the contrary, the Nd5Ge3 intermetallic compound has been barely studied in its single crystalline form, and therefore there are many experiments to conduct to understand its dynamics. The second factor is the rich phenomena that this intermetallic compound presents directly related with the abrupt magnetic changes that possesses. In this system sudden changes occur in every studied physical property when the magnetization changes in a stepped manner. Two fundamental properties of the magnetic dynamics of the Nd5Ge3 system make it so remarkable. First, it is one of few systems with a large irreversible AFM-+FM transition induced by the magnetic field, and second, the magnetic changes during its magnetization processes occur in a stepped manner. Therefore, the motivation to investigate the possibility of finding for the first time magnetic deflagration phenomena in a ferromagnet, and also for the first time in two different magnetic phases of a given material, was very high. In the first two chapters dedicated to the Nd5Ge3 I explore the magnetic properties, the heat capacity and the electric resistivity. Some of the measurements were not previously reported in a single crystal. In the fifth chapter I explore explicitly the spon-taneous field-induced avalanches in magnetism, heat capacity and resistivity. The reason of this three chapters is to have as much ingredients as possible to be able to answer the questions that the possible magnetic deflagrations would raise. I say possible because it is not until the fifth chapter of this thesis when we get the experimental confirmation that the field-induced spontaneous avalanches that the compound present correspond to magnetic deflagration phenomena. In this chapter the magnetic deflagrations were studied in detail in the AFM-+FM transition and in the FM reversal, as a function of the magnetic field and the temperature. The spontaneous and induced deflagrations are explored, obtaining good estimations of the propagation speed and the temperature of the deflagration flame. Using the theoretical framework of the magnetic deflagrations we fit the speed propagation of the front to the experimental data using only one pa-rameter, the heat diffusivity of the material; obtaining a value within the range of heat diffusivities found in other intermetallic compounds., [spa] El objetivo que persigue esta tesis es impulsar el estudio de las deflagraciones magnéti-cas gracias, por una parte al descubrimiento del fenómeno en un sistema nuevo y pro-metedor como es el compuesto intermetálico Nd5Ge3, y por otra a la presentación de un método nuevo de medición de las dependencias espacio-temporales de las mismas utilizando técnicas magneto-ópticas. Manteniendo el hilo conductor del fenómeno de las deflagraciones magnéticas, esta tesis doctoral se divide en dos partes. En la primera parte presento mis investigaciones en el estudio del sistema Mn12—ac. A partir de los tratamientos de los videos obtenidos se confirma la presencia de deflagraciones magnéticas. La segunda parte de la tesis está dedicada al compuesto intermetálico Nd5Ge3. Éste compuesto se trata de uno de los pocos sistemas en los que mediante un campo magnéti-co externo se induce espontáneamente un estado ferromagnético (FM) con gran irre-versibilidad proviniendo de un estado antiferromagnético (AFM). Además, los cambios magnéticos que experimenta el sistema, tanto dicha transición AFM—>FM como la in-versión de la magnetización en el estado FM, ocurren de forma muy abrupta, siendo también uno de los escasos sistemas que presenta esta propiedad. Dedico tres capítulos al estudio de sus propiedades magnéticas, térmicas y eléctri-cas, tanto estáticas como dinámicas. En esas medidas encuentro fenómenos interesantes, desde generación espontánea de voltaje durante las deflagraciones magnéticas, hasta la aparición de saltos espontáneos de la magnetización con el tiempo (manteniendo la tem-peratura y el campo magnético constantes), pasando por la obtención de términos de origen antiferromagnético en la dependencia térmica de la capacidad calorífica del estado ferromagnético saturado, o una magnetorresistencia gigante entre ambos estados, entre otros. En el sexto capítulo, las medidas experimentales confirman la existencia del fenómeno de la deflagración magnética en ambas fases, AFM y FM. La velocidad de propagación del frente obtenida en la teoría de deflagraciones se ajusta bien a los datos experimen-tales. Utilizando la bondad del ajuste, extrapolamos la velocidad teórica hacia campos magnéticos elevados y encontramos la posibilidad de que ésta iguale o supere la velocidad del sonido en el material. Lo más remarcable es que esta posible transición se observa en la extrapolación para campos menores de 50 kOe. Por lo que, en principio, reduciendo la temperatura podríamos ser capaces de obtener medidas de dicha transición. Sin em-bargo, el estudio de las deflagraciones espontáneas en función de la temperatura llevado a cabo en un criostato de dilución resultó un claro ejemplo de serendipia. En vez de alcanzar velocidades supersónicas, lo que encontré fueron unas discontinuidades de salto en los campos de deflagración espontánea no predichas. Por lo tanto, el capítulo pasa a enfocarse en su estudio, concluyendo que su origen está relacionado con propiedades intrínsecas del Nd5Ge3.

[spa] Esta tesis presenta un estudio teórico y computacional sobre la predicción precisa de constantes de acoplamiento magnético en una serie de sistemas complejos. Estos incluyen dos familias de compuestos principales. La primera familia está formada por complejos de coordinación inorgánicos, los cuales presentan centros magnéticos localizados sobre los átomos metálicos y estructuras cristalinas bien definidas. El segundo grupo se trata de radicales puramente orgánicos, con conjugación del sistema π, los cuales presentan una flexibilidad estructural mucho mayor y una deslocalización de los electrones desapareados más extensa. La tesis tiene dos partes principales. La primera se dedica a establecer una estrategia para la extracción de constantes de acoplamiento magnético, lo cual se lleva a cabo en una serie de complejos de coordinación heterodinucleares y homotrinucleares. La estrategia se basa la propuesta de una formulación alternativa del mapping approach, que evita el uso de un proyector de espín y con ello las deficiencias derivadas de ello, en comparación con la formulación inicial propuesta por Noodleman. Esta propuesta es aplicada al problema de tres-electrones tres-centros, y validada por comparación con el experimento y a través de le teoría del Hamiltoniano efectivo. La segunda parte de la tesis se centra en compuestos radicalarios puramente orgánicos π—conjugados, que presentan interacción entre los electrones desapareados a través de enlace. Con el objetivo de promover la estabilidad química de los centros radicalarios, diferentes unidades básicas son consideradas. En base a diferentes esquemas de acoplamiento de estas unidades, y del papel de la flexibilidad estructural, el principal objetivo es establecer los principales factores electrónicos y estructurales para aumentar la estabilidad del radical y promover una interacción ferromagnética robusta entre ellos. Las principales conclusiones de la tesis son dos: primero, la propuesta para extraer constantes de acoplamiento en sistemas complejos resulta en valores consistentes; segundo, esta tesis propone utilizar poliradicales lineales π-conjugados, basados en unidades moleculares derivados de poliarylmethyl radicales, para lograr propiedades ferromagnéticas robustas en sistemas puramente orgánicos estables., [eng] This thesis presents a theoretical and computational approach to the accurate description of magnetic exchange interactions in a variety of complex systems. These include two main families of compounds. The first family is formed by inorganic coordination complexes, presenting localized magnetic centres and well-defined crystal structures. The second family consists of purely organic, π−conjugated odd alternant neutral polyradicals, which display a much larger structural flexibility and greater delocalization of the unpaired electrons over the π system. The thesis has two main parts. The first one refers to the adopted strategy for the accurate extraction of magnetic exchange interactions. The systems used to investigate this issue are coordination compounds of increasing complexity, including heterobinuclear and homotrinuclear complexes, for which experimental crystal structures and magnetic data are available. The adopted strategy is based on the mapping approach, which relies on a one to one correspondence between the non-relativistic, time-independent exact Hamiltonian and two model spin Hamiltonians, the so-called HDVV and Ising. Ultimately, the mapping approach consists on describing both the energy and the wave function of the pure spin states by means of broken symmetry functions, using a spin projector to establish a univocal relation. In this thesis, a detailed analysis of the mapping approach has enabled establishing an alternative and accurate manner for extracting magnetic interactions in complex systems. By pointing out two main deficiencies that make the standard mapping approach proposed by Noodleman not appropriate to certain systems, and following previous work in our group, we propose an alternative approach. This is based on a direct use of the energy of the broken symmetry solutions which are mapped into the energy expectation values of the corresponding broken symmetry solutions of the HDVV Hamiltonian. This strategy relies on the one-to-one correspondence of the diagonal terms of the HDVV and Ising matrix representations. This proposal has been applied to the three-centre three-electron problem, and is further verified by comparison of the calculated coupling constants with the available experimental data and by means of effective Hamiltonian theory. The exchange coupling constant values obtained with this approach are consistent. Additionally, effective Hamiltonian theory offers the possibility to check whether the system can be described as a Heisenberg system. The second part of the thesis deals with purely organic π−conjugated neutral radicals interacting through-bond, and applies the strategy developed for inorganic molecules to extract the magnetic coupling constants between the unpaired electrons in these compounds. On the basis of chemical stability, different building blocks are investigated. Then, by considering different coupling schemes (strategies to assemble them leading to different dimensionalities) and the role of structural flexibility, the main goal of the investigation is to establish the main electronic and structural factors to enhance the stability of the radical centres and promote a robust ferromagnetic interaction among them. Thus, Chapter 1 compares explicitly through-space and through-bond interacting organic radicals, providing experimental arguments for the choice of the latter as building blocks. Chapter 2 introduces the theoretical foundations on which all computational methodologies used in this thesis are based. Chapter 3 provides an analysis of electronic structure methods to establish an accurate scheme to compute magnetic coupling constants in complex systems with well-defined structural parameters. Based on different studies on organic polyradicals, Chapter 4 offers reliable arguments to design purely π−conjugated organic polyradical interacting through-bond, with large S value, high-spin ground state, robust ferromagnetic properties, strong magnetic anisotropy and chemical stability. The appearance of a secondary structure in these flexible molecules is found to be crucial for stabilizing the polyradical high-spin ground state. Altogether, the main conclusions of this thesis are that the proposed strategy for the extraction of magnetic exchange interactions provides consistent results and the proposal for using linear π-conjugated polyradicals, based on molecular units derived from triarylmethyl radicals, to achieve robust ferromagnetic properties in stable purely organic systems.

[eng] Research in magnetic materials leads to new devices and technologies. As the technology progresses, the devices become smaller and this miniaturization allows more storage capacity and lower costs in the production of new technologies. As new and smaller materials are fabricated, new phenomena appear and thus new physics is needed to describe them. Nanomaterials meet characteristics of both the microscopic quantum world and the macroscopic classic world. This intermediate length scale is known as mesoscale. Nanomaterials can be obtained in a variety of forms, being nanoparticles and magnetic ultra-thin films some of the most used. These magnetic systems are very different in their composition: nanoparticles are grown with chemical reactions, and thin films are grown on a substrate by nanofabrication techniques such as sputtering or electron-beam evaporation. The magnetization might not be uniform in a magnetic thin film or in a large magnetic nanoparticle leading to the formation of magnetic domains. Magnetic domains are static structures that appear due to competition of the different magnetic energies and can be used to store and transport information. In all these systems, the magnetization dynamics gives rise to new behavior not visible in static measurements: quantum steps of the magnetization in molecular magnets; characteristic resonant frequencies that can be used to control the magnetic state of vortices; and formation of magnetic droplet solitons in thin films with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. Understanding the dynamics of nanomaterials and the evolution of the magnetization is a key process to develop faster devices and technologies. The early studies of molecular magnets showed quantum effects at the macroscopic scale, which have allowed a better understanding of spin. Magnetic vortices have been proposed for multiple applications, from magnetic storage of information to cancer cell destruction. The recently discovered magnetic droplet soliton is also a very good candidate for technological applications due to the low current and magnetic field needed for its generation, and it is now a system with a growing interest in spintronics. In this dissertation we show some new dynamic phenomena. In the first part of the thesis we study systems that allow a macroscopic-spin model where spatial variations of magnetization are neglected. We develop a theory that sets the requirements for the observation of the rotational Doppler effect in a ferromagnetic system and we measure quantum effects in randomly oriented nanoparticles of a single-molecule magnet, which might be a good candidate for the observation of the Doppler effect. In the second part of the thesis, we study the magnetization dynamics in macroscopic systems that require a spatial dependence of the magnetic moment. We generate and control the dynamic states of the magnetic domains with oscillating fields, in the case of magnetic vortices, and with electrical currents, in the case of droplet solitons., [spa] La investigación en materiales magnéticos ha dado lugar a nuevos dispositivos y tecnologías. A medida que la tecnología progresa, los dispositivos se hacen más pequeños. Esto permite una mayor capacidad de almacenamiento y reducir los costes de producción. A medida que se fabrican materiales más pequeños, surgen nuevos comportamientos. Los nanomateriales reúnen características tanto del mundo cuántico microscópico como del mundo clásico macroscópico. Esta escala de longitud se conoce como mesoescala. Existen variedad de forms de nanomateriales, entre las cuales nanopartículas y capas magnéticas ultrafinas. La composición de estos sistemas es diversa: las nanopartículas se obtienen a partir de reacciones químicas y las capas finas se crecen en un sustrato mediante técnicas de nanofabricación. La magnetización en las capas finas o en nanopartículas magnéticas grandes puede no ser uniforme, lo que lleva a la formación de dominios magnéticos. En todos estos sistemas, la dinámica de la magnetización da lugar a un nuevo comportamiento que no es visible en las mediciones estáticas: fenómenos cuánticas de la magnetización en imanes moleculares; frecuencias de resonancia características que se pueden utilizar para controlar el estado magnético de los vórtices; y la formación de solitones “droplet” magnéticos en capas finas con anisotropía magnética perpendicular. La comprensión de la dinámica de los nanomateriales y la evolución de la magnetización es un proceso clave para el desarrollo de dispositivos y tecnologías más rápidas. Los primeros estudios de imanes moleculares mostraron efectos cuánticos a escala macroscópica, que han permitido una mejor comprensión del espín. Los vórtices magnéticos se han propuesto para múltiples aplicaciones, desde el almacenamiento magnético de la información a la destrucción de células de cáncer. El solitón “droplet” magnético, descubierto recientemente, es también muy buen candidato para aplicaciones tecnológicas debido al bajo campo magnético y baja corriente necesarios para su generación. En esta tesis se muestran algunos nuevos fenómenos dinámicos. En la primera parte de la tesis, estudiamos sistemas que permite un modelo de macroespín, en el que no hay variaciones espaciales de la magnetización. En la segunda parte estudiamos la dinámica en sistemas con dominios magnéticos, lo cual requiere una dependencia espacial de la magnetización.

[cat] Els organismes aerobis, com a subproducte del metabolisme, produeixen espècies reduïdes d'oxigen (ROS) de manera incompleta com: el radical superòxid (01, el peròxid d'hidrogen (H202) o el radical hidroxil (*OH), entre d'altres. Malgrat que les ROS tenen un paper essencial en l'organisme, una sobreproducció de ROS en l'organisme pot generar estrès oxidatiu. Aquest, sol estar associat a malalties degeneratives com l'Alzheimer, el Parkinson, l'esclerosi lateral amiotròfica, l'esclerosi múltiple o el càncer i a processos d'envelliment. Tot i així, el cos té certs mecanismes de defensa per controlar la homeòstasi de les ROS. Un d'aquests mecanismes són les catalases que s'encarreguen de desproporcionar el H2O2 en O2 i H2O. En el grup de Models en Bioinorgànica es sintetitzen compostos mimètics del centre actiu de les catalases de manganès que es troben en alguns bacteris. Aquests compostos mimètics són compostos dinuclears de Mn(III) de fórmula general [{Mn(L)(NN)}2(1.1-0)(1.1-n-RC6H4C00)2]X2. Els compostos sintetitzats en aquest treball consten de NN (Iligand bidentat) = 1,1 0-fenantrolina (phen) o 2,2'-bipiridina (bpy), X = perclorat (C104-) o nitrat (NO3-), L (posició làbil) = molècules de dissolvent o contra-anió i n-R (carboxilat pont) on R = Br o Me i n = 2, 3 o 4. A part de testar l'activitat catalítica dels compostos també s'estudien les propietats magnètiques. Els compostos dinuclears de manganès(III) poden presentar acoblaments magnètics tant del tipus ferromagnètic com antiferromagnètic depenent del Iligand carboxilat pont i dels paràmetres estructurals. Aquests compostos, en general, tenen un octàedre de coordinació més aviat allargat en la direcció del Iligand làbil (o eix Jahn-Teller) i per tant a l'hora d'ajustar-los ha estat necessari introduir altres paràmetres que tenen en compte l'anisotropia de l'ió Mn(III) (DM„ i EMn). Mitjançant càlculs teòrics s'ha pogut relacionar el signe d'aquests paràmetres amb la distorsió de l'octàedre. Per altra banda, a través de les correlacions magneto-estructurals s'ha intentat buscar una tendència general entre els factors estructurals dels compostos aquí estudiats i el tipus d'acoblament magnètic. També s'ha estudiat les propietats magnètiques de sistemes de Mn(II) (carboxilats de manganès (Mn(n-RC6H4C00)2) i compostos hexanuclears de valència mixta Mn(II)- Mn(III) de formula [Mn6(1.14-0)2(1.1-n-RC6H4C00)10(L)4] on en ambdós casos on R = Br o Me i n = 2, 3 i 4). Els primers són sistemes estesos de diferent nuclearitat. Tots ells presenten interaccions febles i el caràcter magnètic dependrà dels modes de coordinació del Iligand pont. D'altra banda, tots els compostos hexanuclears presenten un acoblament magnètic de tipus antiferromagnètic fort i sembla que el fet de canviar els Iligands no afecta a la interacció magnètica., [eng] Aerobic organisms, as a by-product of the metabolism, generate some incomplete reduced oxygen species (ROS) like 02' -, H202 or the radical •0H. Increased levels of ROS can cause oxidative damage and causing some degenerative diseases like Alzheimer, Parkinson, sclerosis or cancer. Nevertheless, biological organisms have some defence mechanisms to fight against ROS. One of them are catalase that decomposes H202 in 02 and H2O. In Models en Bioinorganica group Mn(III) dinuclears compounds are synthesised with the aim to mimic the active centre of the manganese catalase that can be found in some bacteria. The general formula for these compounds is [{Mn(L)(NN)}2(.1.-0) (1.1.-n-RC6H4C00)2]X2 where NN = bpy or phen, X = solvent molecule or counter-ion and R = Br or Me and n= 2, 3 or 4. Mn(III) dinuclear compounds, also presents magnetic coupling that can be ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic depending on the carboxilato bridge and of its structural parameters. Through theoretical calculations we try to relate these parameters with the sign of the distortion of the octahedron. Moreover, through the magneto-structural correlations it has tried to find a general tendency among the structural factors of the compounds studied here and type of magnetic coupling. Also the catalase activity of the Mn(III) dinuclear compounds was studied. Despite all compounds presents catalytic activity, has been observed that all the ligands and the counter-ion have a certain effect on the reaction rate. However, the compounds are not stables or robust. To emulate the protein pocket and confer some stability to the Mn(IIII) compound during the catalysis, some of this compounds were introduced in a mesoporous support MCM-41 type. This supports were first functionalised by a molecular stencil patterning method (MST) and after the Mn(III) compound was introduced by an ionic exchange. The catalytic activity of the new hybrid materials presents an improved catalase activity than Mn(III) dinuclear compounds.

From the fundamental point of view, NPs formed by MFe2O4 with (M= Co, Fe) are ideal system models to study the new magnetic phenomena associated with the so-called particle-like behaviour, which emerges from the size reduction towards the nanometre scale and contrasts with the well-established magnetic properties of their bulk-counterparts. It is well known that most of the particle-like behaviour and in general the large variability of the magnetic properties observed in this kind of nanomaterials are related to structural features of the NPs rather than being originated from intrinsic finite-size or surface effects, at least for NPs bigger than a few nanometers. These structural features, such as crystallographic defects, polycrystalline nature of the NPs, lack of crystallinity at the particle surface, etc., have strong influence on their magnetic properties and can be modified at will through the synthesis method. Therefore, whenever this particle-like behaviour is unwanted for applications with highly demanding requirements, the choice of a suitable synthesis method is of key importance to obtain NPs of high-crystalline quality. On the contrary, particle-like behaviour controlled by the crystalline nature of the NPs could be useful to tailor their magnetic properties for specific applications. Among the common synthesis methods, high-temperature decomposition of metal-organic precursors results the best alternative due to the remarkable final properties of the obtained NPs, such as narrow size distribution, high crystallinity and relatively simple tuning of their size and shape. So this will be the chemical route chosen in this work to study the capabilities of this synthesis method to control the final properties of the NPs through their nanostructure. In addition, to get a deeper insight in the magnetic and structural properties of those materials and to shed light on relevant issues that are still under discussion (dynamic response, magnetic frustration or inter¬particle interactions) it could be useful to combine experimental techniques enabling the characterization of the system from macroscopic scales towards single-particle structures. Within this framework, we present this work that is divided into three main parts. First, it is studied the effect of the concentration of two common reactants, involved in the thermal decomposition method, on the final properties of magnetic NPs based on iron oxides aiming at optimizing the synthesis procedure and getting a good control of the structure of the final product. In the second part, those NPs obtained in the former way are applied to demonstrate the crucial role of the nanostructure on the physical properties of nanoparticulate systems; specially, the strong interplay existent between structure and both magnetic frustration and interparticle interactions. Finally, in the third part, MFM experiments with an external applied magnetic field have been performed to directly observe the reversal of the magnetization of isolated particles and the dynamic behaviour of small aggregates.

Molecular materials have raised much interest in the last decades in the quest for new multifunctional devices. Among the multiple properties that those materials may present, one of the most typical is magnetism, which arises from the presence of unpaired electrons in the molecules that constitute the three-dimensional crystal. Magnetism has a macroscopic observable, the magnetic susceptibility (Ji), which is usually rationalized in terms of a set of JAB magnetic interactions between pairs of molecules. However, any experimental technique allows for such direct correspondence and, thus, the experimental interpretation of the magnetic properties usually requires further analysis from the point of view of computational chemistry. Consequently, the present PhD thesis is a contribution to the computational modeling of molecule-based magnetic materials. Specifically, we describe how the tools of computational chemistry may be used in order to study those materials from different perspectives. With this aim in mind, we have applied computational chemistry techniques to rationalize the magnetic properties of several systems of interest, ranging from metal-organic compounds, based on Cu(II), to pure organic radicals based on the DTA and Benzotriazinyl building blocks, and including compounds based on the metal-radical synthetic approach, and also spin crossover materials based on Fe(II). Along the thesis we have demonstrated that computational chemistry is a helpful discipline, capable to aid in the interpretation of experimental results and in the prediction of interesting properties, especially when working in close collaboration with experimentalists. In particular, the First Principles Bottom-Up (FPBU) procedure, extensively developed in our group, is a useful tool to rationalize the magnetic properties of any molecular magnetic material. To this purpose, the magnetic topology (i.e. the network of JAB within the crystal) is the key element. Regarding the magnetic topology, we have also demonstrated that it can be more intricate and complex than expected, and that it cannot be directly inferred from the coordination pattern of the molecule-based material. Therefore, the experimental assignation of the magnetic topology, by means of a fitting procedure, must be taken with caution. About the JAB values, we have proved that they depend on temperature, and that this dependence may be especially important when working with organic radicals. On this class of materials, we have analyzed how the JAB values evolve with time, and seen that this evolution may involve huge fluctuations of their magnitude as a consequence of the thermal motion at finite temperatures. Interestingly, we demonstrate herein that, when the JAB values depend non-linearly with the thermal vibrations of a material, the standard static perspective of magnetism is not valid to fully understand their magnetic properties, and that it is then required to adopt a dynamic perspective. Regarding the computational modeling of JAB values, we have seen that the combination of UB3LYP and the Broken-Symmetry approach yields JAB values, when transformed into the macroscopic observables, are in good agreement with experiment. In fact, we have demonstrated that, in order to predict the strength of a given JAB value, small distortions in the crystal structure can induce large variations, which may be much more important than the intrinsic error associated with the theoretical method employed. We have also observed that the counterions and diamagnetic ligands may have an important effect in defining the magnetic properties of a system. Overall, we have demonstrated that the magnetic topology and, thus, the macroscopic magnetic properties of a given material, cannot be understood without the proper knowledge of their crystal structure., Els materials moleculars han despertat molt d'interès en les últimes dècades degut a la seva possible aplicació en nous dispositius multifuncionals. Entre les diferents propietats que aquests materials poden presentar, una de les més típiques és el magnetisme, el qual sorgeix de la presència d’electrons desaparellats en les molècules que constitueixen el cristall tridimensional. El magnetisme té un observable macroscòpic, la susceptibilitat magnètica (Ji), que sol ser racionalitzada en termes microscòpics mitjançant el conjunt d'interaccions magnètiques JAB entre determinats parells de molècules. No obstant això, cap tècnica experimental permet aquesta correspondència directa i, per tant, la interpretació experimental de les propietats magnètiques sol requerir d’un posterior anàlisi des del punt de vista de la química computacional. La present tesi doctoral pretén doncs contribuir en el camp del magnetisme molecular i, més concretament, en com es poden utilitzar les eines de la química computacional per a modelitzar materials magnètics moleculars des de diferents perspectives. Amb aquest objectiu en ment, s’han racionalitzat les propietats magnètiques de diversos sistemes d'interès, que van des de compostos metal•lorgànics basats en ions de Cu(II) o de Co(II), radicals orgànics purs, compostos basats en l’estratègia sintètica de “metall-radical”, i finalment també materials de spin crossover basats en Fe(II). Al llarg de la tesi s'ha demostrat que la química computacional és una disciplina útil, capaç d'ajudar a la interpretació dels resultats experimentals i en la predicció de propietats interessants, especialment quan es treballa en estreta col•laboració amb els experimentadors. En particular, el procediment de primers principis Bottom-Up (FPBU, per les seves sigles en anglès), desenvolupat àmpliament en el nostre grup, és una eina útil per racionalitzar les propietats magnètiques de qualsevol material magnètic molecular. Per a aquest propòsit, la topologia magnètica (és a dir, la xarxa de JAB dins del cristall) és l'element clau. A més, hem analitzat diversos factors que afecten aquesta topologia magnètica, com els contraions, els radicals diamagnètics o l’efecte de la temperatura, mitjançant el la seva manifestació en les vibracions del cristall i en la contracció (expansió) que pateix al refredar-se (escalfar-se).

En esta memoria se recogen los resultados sobre preparación y caracterización de las propiedades físicas de sistemas magnéticos nanoestructurados. Para la fabricación de las nanoestructuras se han empleado dos estrategias diferentes: la estrategia ascendente (bottom‐up), que se basa en el autoensamblaje de componentes nanométricos elementales, en nuestro caso nanopartículas (NPs), y la estrategia descendente (top‐down), que fundamentalmente consiste en el empleo de las técnicas de litografía y grabado para definir motivos a escala micrométrica o nanométrica. Para ambas estrategias, se seleccionaron materiales magnéticos que, debido a sus propiedades físicas, se consideran muy buenos candidatos para futuras aplicaciones tecnológicas. En concreto, para la estrategia ascendente se sintetizaron coloides con NP’s de Co por su potencial interés en la fabricación de dispositivos de memorias magnéticas de alta densidad, con los cuales podría superarse el límite actual, que se encuentra alrededor de 1 Terabits/in2. Por su parte, para la estrategia descendente se seleccionó la manganita La0.66Sr0.33MnO3 porque gracias a su carácter semimetálico (polarización total de espín) y su elevada temperatura de Curie resulta ser uno de los mejores candidatos para la implementación de dispositivos de espintrónica. En el primer caso se han utilizado las técnicas de “drop casting” y “spin coating” y los resultados obtenidos en ambos casos demuestran que una baja dispersión de tamaño de las NPs (< 15% de dev. std. respecto al valor promedio) es de capital importancia para conseguir el autoensamblaje de las NPs en áreas grandes. Además, se han optimizado las condiciones experimentales (temperatura, velocidad de evaporación, tipo de solvente, mojabilidad del coloide, etc.) que permiten la formación de sistemas nanoestructurados homogéneos y con orden de largo alcance sobre sustratos de interés tecnológico, en particular sobre silicio. Respecto a la estrategia descendente, se demuestra que la técnica de grabado aquí propuesta constituye un avance frente a las técnicas tradicionales de ataque mediante métodos físicos que, si bien están perfectamente contrastadas para su uso en semiconductores, en el caso de los óxidos presentan diversos problemas. Su ventaja radica en que con ella se elimina la posibilidad de crear defectos en el material resultante como, por ejemplo: la implantación iónica o la generación de defectos cristalinos, los cuales deterioran las propiedades físicas del material. También se ha realizado un estudio de los fenómenos de la interfase formada por un óxido complejo como el LSMO y distintos materiales aislantes típicamente usados como barrera en la fabricación de uniones túnel. Para ello se han preparado diferentes bicapas integradas por LSMO y un material aislante: MgO, NdGaO3, SrTiO3 y LaAlO3. El método empleado aquí permite comparar cuantitativamente los resultados de las distintas barreras, sin necesidad de llevar a cabo el proceso completo de fabricación de las uniones túnel, y por tanto, permite conocer de manera experimental cuál de los distintos materiales de barrera proporciona la respuesta óptima. En esta memoria se aborda también el estudio de los fenómenos de electroresistencia en manganitas. Cuando se estudia la electroresistencia en dispositivos nanométricos sometidos a altas densidades de corriente (superiores a 1x105 A/cm2) frecuentemente surge el debate acerca de la importancia del efecto Joule. Con la intención de clarificar el papel del efecto Joule se ha diseñado un sistema que permite tener acceso a la temperatura local de las muestras durante la medición de las curvas características I‐V. Nuestros resultados demuestran que el comportamiento fuertemente no lineal de las curvas I‐V no puede ser atribuida exclusivamente al efecto Joule. Por otra parte, el aumento progresivo e irreversible de la resistencia en todo el rango de temperaturas y la disminución de la TC al inyectar altas densidades corriente, apuntan hacia una progresiva degradación de las muestras debida a la disminución del contenido de oxígeno. Esta hipótesis se confirma por el hecho de que un recocido de las muestras al aire a alta temperatura permite recobrar los valores iniciales de resistencia y TC. Finalmente, se ha realizado una investigación detallada del fenómeno de cambio reversible de resistencia en LSMO. La transición reversible entre los estados de alta y baja resistencia se ha inducido mediante la aplicación de un voltaje de bias a través de la punta conductora del AFM, se ha identificado el mecanismo que da lugar a dicho cambio y se ha determinado cual es el material activo en dicho cambio de resistencia., This memory compiles the results obtained about the preparation and characterization of the physical properties of nanostrutured magnetic systems. For the fabrication of nanostructures two different strategies have been used: the bottom‐up strategy based on the self‐assembly of elemental nanometric pieces, in our case nanoparticles (NPs) and the topdown strategy, that imply the use of lithographic and etching techniques to define motives at the micro or nanometric scale. Using the first strategy, different samples have been prepared by means of the dropcasting and spin coating techniques. In both cases we have obtained self‐assembled monolayers of highly ordered Co magnetic nanoparticles (NPs) onto Si substrates. The influence of different parameters, such as substrate temperature, evaporation time, the solvent used and the wetting of the colloid, were analyzed. The top‐down procedure was used for fabricating La0.66Sr0.33MnO3 (LSMO)/insulating layer bilayers and La0.66Sr0.33MnO3 microbridges by lithographic and etching techniques. We have fabricated the LSMO/insulating layer bilayers to investigated interfacial effects between LSMO electrodes and different insulating layers, such as MgO, NdGaO3, SrTiO3 and LaAlO3. Our set up allows studying and comparing the electronic effects at the LSMO/insulating layer interface which could be of major interest for the implementation of oxide‐based magnetic tunneling junctions. Finally electroresistance and reversible resistive switching (RS) behavior were also investigated in sputtered LSMO thin films. To ascertain the role of Joule self‐heating effects I‐V characteristic curves were measured in LSMO microbridges with a nanometric Pt thermometer on top in order to gain access to the local variations of temperature. Strongly non‐linear I‐V characteristic curves were observed that cannot be explained by Joule heating effects alone. In addition, the progressive and irreversible augment of resistance, together with the reduction of TC, strongly suggest a progressive degradation of the samples due to oxygen depletion. For the RS studies the LSMO resistance state was locally modified by using a conducting scanning‐probe microscope. Our results indicate that the mechanism of RS in this type of manganites is chiefly an electronic effect. The effect is not only confined to the surface but its spatial extension and even the final resistance state condition can be modulated by the magnitude of potential and the time it is applied. The stability of the different resistance states as a function of temperature and magnetic field was also analyzed.

[cat] Bé sigui el canvi de temperatura que experimenta un material a l’aplicar-li un camp magnètic en condicions adiabàtiques, o bé sigui el canvi d’entropia del material com a conseqüència de la modificació del camp magnètic en condicions isotermes, en tots dos casos obtenim una desposta tèrmica que es coneix com a Efecte Magnetocalòric (MCE). De fet, qualsevol variació de les variables tèrmiques es pot classificar segons el camp extern que s’hi apliqui. Així doncs, depenent de l’estímul extern obtindrem un efecte calòric diferent, com per exemple l’ esmentat efecte magnetocalòric quan s’aplica un camp magnètic extern. Als anys trenta del passat segle XX, aquest efecte magnetocalòric va oferir la possibilitat d’atansar temperatures pròximes al zero kelvin mitjançant la desmagnetització de salts paramagnètiques. Avui dia, el descobriment de nous materials juntament amb els avenços tecnològics ens ha permès reduir la distància entre la recerca i la refrigeració en estat sòlid a temperatura ambient. En resum, dins d’aquesta tesi hem estudiat una varietat de materials magnètics que presenten diferents efectes calòrics gegants i que estan demostrant ser materials molt prometedors per a la refrigeració ecològica d’estat sòlid., [eng] Depending on whether the magnetic field is applied adiabatically to the sample or in isothermal conditions, the thermal response of the material will result in a temperature change or in an entropy change, respectively. In both cases, one obtain a thermal response which is known as Magnetocaloric Effect (MCE). In fact, any variation of the thermal variables can be classified based on the external applied field. Thus, depending on the nature of the external stimulus we will obtain a different caloric effect, such as the aforementioned magnetocaloric effect when applying a magnetic field. In the 1930s this magnetocaloric effect, indeed, showed up the possibility to reach temperatures well below 1 K through the adiabatic demagnetization of paramagnetic salts. Today, the discovery of new materials together with technological improvements are bridging the gap between research and solid-state refrigeration at room temperature. In summary, within this thesis we have studied a variety of magnetic materials exhibiting different giant Caloric effects that are proving to be very promising materials for eco-friendly solid-state refrigeration purposes.

La resposta dels materials i/o sistemes físics quan interactuen amb la radiació electromagnètica ens dóna informació sobre les propietats físiques d’aquesta classe de materials i/o sistemes, com per exemple la conductivitat elèctrica, la permeabilitat magnètica, l’isospín d’un nucli atòmic, etc. Dos exemples són les ressonàncies magnètiques nuclear i electrònica, que consisteixen en sotmetre un material a radiació electromagnètica en el rang de radiofreqüència i microones, freqüències entre el 10 MHz i 300 GHz, i a un camp magnètic estacionari. En aquesta tesi es presenten els comportaments i/o la resposta de dos materials magnètics en front a la radiació de microones, el qual pertany al rang de freqüències compres entre els 300 MHz i els 300 GHz. Per aquest propòsit, el Grup de Magnetisme, Superconductivitat, Microones i Baixes temperatures de la Universitat de Barcelona, disposa d’un analitzador de xarxes vectorial model E8361A de la companyia Agilent, que permet analitzar senyals electromagnètiques, transmeses i/o reflectides, entre 10 MHz i 110 GHz. Les dues classes de materials magnètics que s’han estudiat son: el granat d’itri-ferro, amb composició química corresponent Y3Fe5O12 (YIG) i la manganita de lantà i calci, amb composició química corresponent La0.25Ca0.75MnO3. En el cas del YIG, encara que és un material magnètic força estudiat, ens vàrem plantejar el seu estudi emprant nous dissenys de ressonadors de microones. Aquest fet, junt amb l’aparició de nous resultats experimentals inesperats, i mancats d’una interpretació, justifiquen el seu estudi en aquesta memòria de tesis. En el cas de la manganita, ens trobàrem en la situació oposada, no hi ha gaires publicacions sobre mesures experimentals de ressonància electrònica de espín en aquest tipus de materials. Juntament amb l’aparició de nous fenòmens magnètics no publicats, quan es va procedir a la seva sistemàtica i completa caracterització magnètica. Fets que justifiquen el seu estudi en aquesta memòria de tesis. Aquesta memòria de tesis està organitzada en dos capítols: El primer capítol està dedicat al granat de d’itri-ferro, material ferrimagnètic a temperatura ambient (la seva temperatura de Curie és de 550 K), i que té les pèrdues d’energia més petites de tots els materials coneguts, quan aquest està sotmès a una senyal electromagnètica de microones. Llavors, aquest material és el més indicat per a l’estudi del fenòmens associats a la ressonància ferromagnètica. Per tant, en aquest capítol es presenta una introducció a la tècnica i a la fenomenologia física associada a la ressonància magnètica; una descripció de les propietats físiques del granat d’itri-ferro i una introducció a l’electrònica de microones. Aquesta última servirà com fonament per comprendre els experiments de ressonància ferromagnètica a temperatura ambient; ja que en ells s’empren tres tipus de ressonadors de microones: dos ressonadors de línia de microtira lambda/2 i un tercer consistent en dos ressonadors lambda/2 de microtira acoblats electrònicament entre ells en els seus centres (en forma de X). Juntament amb l’analizador de xarxes vectorial i un electromagnet, que pot aplicar camps magnètics fins a 0.5 T. La mostra de YIG ha estat crescuda epitaxialment en les dues cares d’un disc de granat de gadolini-gal.li (Gd3Ga5O12). El conjunt té un gruix de 0.5 mm i un diàmetre de 4 mm; les dues capes de YIG tenen un gruix de 49.6 milimicres cadascuna. Els resultats experimentals ens mostren tres espectres de absorció associats a tres classes de modes magnetoestàtics, com conseqüència de tres tipus de distribucions espacials de camp magnètic de microones, que sent el disc de YIG. Observats a quatre freqüències de ressonància diferents. I no únicament a una freqüència fixada, sinó en el rang de freqüències que defineixen cada pic de ressonància de cada ressonador. Els resultats d’aquesta última classe d’experiments mostren una correspondència lineal entre la freqüència de microones i el camp magnètic aplicat, però no correspon amb la relació obtinguda a través de la teoria dels modes magnetoestàtics. Es van realitzar estimacions per descartar qualsevol efecte de potència o acoblament entre les dues capes de YIG, portant a l’única explicació possible que aquests modes magnetoestàtics estan interaccionant amb la radiació electromagnètica que ells mateixos generen en la mostra de YIG. Arrel d’això, s’ha ideat un model basat en aquesta conclusió, per explicar com canvien les relacions lineals entre la freqüència de microones i el camp magnètic aplicat, en presència de radiació electromagnètica. Model que explica satisfactòriament els resultats obtinguts en les mesures experimentals de ressonància ferromagnètica en YIG. El segon capítol està dedicat a l’estudi de la manganita La0.25Ca0.75MnO3 des del punt de vista magnètic i de la ressonància electrònica d’espín. Per això, en aquest capítol se realitza una introducció a la família de manganites La(1-x)CaxMnO3 , atenent a la seva fenomenologia magnètica. Degut a això, també es descriu el fenomen del esbiaix d’intercanvi i la dinàmica de sistemes superparamagnètics i de vidres de espín. Aquests seran els fonaments per entendre els resultats de la caracterització magnètica de dues manganites nanogranulars, que anomenarem A i B; les quals fóren fabricades pel mètode sol-gel y calcinades a 600ºC i a 1000ºC respectivament. Per poder realitzar aquestes mesures experimentals, es disposa d’un magnetòmetre MPMS que permet realitzar mesures de magnetització entre 2 K y 350 K, aplicant camps magnètics entre -5 T i 5 T, a més de realitzar mesures de susceptibilitat magnètica a diferents freqüències de camp magnètic altern entre 0.1 Hz i 1500 Hz. Els resultats obtinguts mostren que els nanogrànuls contenen, des del punt de vista magnètic, un nucli antiferromagnètic i una escorça formada per clústers ferromagnètics, que interactuen a través de l’interacció de intercanvi. A més, en la mostra B s’observa el fenomen de l’ordenament de càrrega a altes temperatures i la manifestació d’un vidre d’espín interficial a baixes temperatures, entre els clústers ferromagnètics i el nucli antiferromagnètic. Fets molt poc habituals en aquest tipus de mostres i que no es donen en la mostra A. Finalment, en les mesures de ressonància electrònica d’espín, es van emprar dues classes de ressonadors de microones: un ressonador coaxial i un ressonador de microtira curtcircuitat i alhora connectat en sèrie a una resistència de 50 Ohms, específica per senyals de radiofreqüència i microones. Amb ells, els resultats experimentals obtinguts per a la mostra A concorden amb el model hidrodinàmic per als vidres d’espín. Fet que permet estimar la dependència de la constant giromagnètica i la constant d’anisotropia uniaxial efectiva de la mostra A, amb la temperatura. La correlació entre l’anisotropia magnètica uniaxial efectiva i la temperatura concorda amb la corresponent als vidres d’espín i/o les nanopartícules magnètiques i a més, permet l’estimació de la seva temperatura d’ ordenament de càrrega, essent aproximadament de 225 K . El factor giromagnètic de la mostra A reflecteix un canvi de la seva estructura cristal.lina, associada als clústers ferromagnètics, mentre va variant la temperatura. Fet que es presenta com una alternativa a l’hora d’estudiar canvis estructurals en els cristalls., In this doctoral thesis, the response against the microwave electromagnetic radiation of two well differentiated magnetic materials is studied: the yttrium-iron garnet and the nanogranular manganite of chemical composition La0.25Ca0.75MnO3. In the case of the yttrium-iron garnet (YIG), even though it is a well-known magnetic material, we considered its study using a new sort of microwave resonators. This fact, together with the obtaining of unexpected experimental results without physical interpretation, inspires its study in this thesis. In the case of the manganite, we had found the opposite situation, in the literature experimental studies in electron spin resonance (ESR) have hardly ever been reported in this kind of materials. Therefore, we decided to perform its study using different microwave resonators. It was necessary, as well, to characterize magnetically the samples to understand their behavior. Precisely in these last experimental measurements, performed following a complete and systematic procedure, we were able to explain new physical phenomenology never reported previously, until now, in this material. This doctoral thesis, entitled “Study of Magnetic Materials with Microwaves” is arranged in two chapters. The first one is devoted to the study of the ferromagnetic resonance in a disk-shaped YIG sample. The results show the appearance of three types of Magnetostatic Spin Forward Volume Waves (MSFVW), for three kinds of microstrip resonators (two linear ones and one X-shaped), related with three kinds of magnetic spatial distributions. The relationship between the microwave frequency and the applied magnetic field does not follow the theoretical model of MSFVW and, after some estimations, we concluded that this is caused by the interaction between the MSFVW and the electromagnetic radiation generated by them. This new fact is explained theoretically by the development of a new model, considering this last interaction. The second chapter is devoted to the study of nanogranular manganites of chemical composition La0.25Ca0.75MnO3, from the point of view of their magnetism and their ESR response. A complete and systematic magnetic characterization is performed firstly in two samples, named A and B. Both samples manifest exchange bias interaction between ferromagnetic shell clusters and antiferromagnetic core, in each nanograin. Moreover, in sample B, interficial spin-glass is observed at low temperatures and charge ordering transition at high temperatures. These facts are rarely reported in similar magnetic systems. And they are not observed in sample A. ESR experiments were performed in sample A with a coaxial resonator and a short-circuited microstrip resonator connected to a 50 Ohms series resistor. The results follow the hydrodynamic model, allowing the estimation of the effective magnetic anisotropy constant and the gyromagnetic factor at different temperatures. The first one shows the same thermal behavior expected for nanoparticles and/or spin-glasses, and it also allows the estimation of the charge ordering temperature of sample A around 225 K. The thermal dependence of the gyromagnetic factor shows the expected behaviour for the crystalline structure of a La0.25Ca0.75MnO3 nanoparticle system. This means that the calculation of the thermal behavior of gyromagnetic factor is an alternative to X-ray thermal studies.

[spa] En esta tesis doctoral se presentan estudios computacionales basados en métodos de estructura electrónica de propiedades magnéticas en sistemas inorgánicos moleculares y extendidos. La primera sección incluye un trabajo sobre transporte electrónico a través de uniones moleculares constituidas por complejos de transición, se empleó la metodología de las funciones de Green fuera del equilibrio en combinación con cálculos basados en la teoría del funcional de la densidad (NEGF+DFT). En el artículo se analizaron las propiedades de transporte electrónico polarizado de espín a través de un compuesto con transición de espín de hierro(II). El segundo bloque está compuesto por tres trabajos acerca de la modulación de las propiedades de transición de espín en redes metalo-orgánicas porosas tipo clatrato de Hofmann. Los estudios teóricos fueron realizados mediante cálculos DFT periódicos. Se analizó la red {[FeII(pirazina)][PtII(CN)4]} en presencia de diferentes moléculas pequeñas (disulfuro de carbono, dióxido de azufre, tiourea, tiofeno, pirrol, furano, pirazina y yodo). Las distorsiones geométricas calculadas para la red en presencia de las diferentes moléculas huésped fueron comparadas con las estructuras determinadas mediante difracción de rayos X. Las modificaciones en la temperatura experimental de transición de espín fueron comparadas con los cambios en energía electrónica calculados. La naturaleza de las interacciones huésped-anfitrión fue estudiada a través del cálculo de energías de interacción y análisis de la densidad de estados (curvas COD). El tercer bloque trata sobre propiedades magnéticas en compuestos de coordinación de lantánidos. Los estudios teóricos fueron realizados mediante cálculos CASSCF+RASSI. En el primer trabajo se investigó un grupo de veinte compuestos mononucleares de disprosio(III) que presentan comportamiento de imán unimolecular (SMM), SMM inducido por campo o ausencia de este comportamiento. Las propiedades magnéticas calculadas comparadas con información experimental. El efecto del entorno de coordinación en las propiedades SMM fue estudiado mediante medidas continuas de forma y cálculos CASSCF+RASSI en estructuras modelo, a partir de esta información se sugirieron la condiciones que favorecen el comportamiento SMM. En los otros trabajos de este bloque se investigan las propiedades magnéticas de compuestos polinucleares de lantánidos a través de cálculos CASSCF+RASSI y ajustes de constantes de acoplamiento mediante el modelo de Lines, se discutió acerca del papel de la anisotropía magnética en el comportamiento SMM y de las contribuciones de intercambio y dipolar en la interacción entre centros magnéticos. En la cuarta sección se presentan tres artículos sobre interacciones de intercambio en complejos polinucleares de metales de transición y lantánidos estudiados a través de métodos DFT (aproximación Broken Symmetry), las propiedades magnéticas de los compuestos (curvas de magnetización y susceptibilidad) fueron simuladas a través de la diagonalización del Hamiltoniano de Heisenberg-Dirac-Van Vleck y métodos de Monte Carlo cuántico. El primer artículo trata de las propiedades magnetocalóricas de compuestos polinucleares de gadolinio con metales de transición. El signo y la magnitud de las constantes de acoplamiento calculadas fueron comparados con los valores ajustados a datos experimentales y relacionados con la geometría y coordinación de los caminos de intercambio. El efecto de las interacciones de intercambio respecto a las propiedades magnetocalóricas de los compuestos fue evaluada a través del cálculo de la variación de la entropía magnética. Finalmente, las condiciones que favorecen la aparición de un efecto magnetocalórico pronunciado fueron discutidas. En el segundo y tercer trabajo se comparan las propiedades magnéticas experimentales y calculadas de un complejo de cobre y otro de hierro. Las constantes de acoplamiento fueron analizadas en función la geometría y tipo de grupos puente a través de correlaciones magnetoestructurales conocidas., [eng] This thesis presents theoretical studies based on electronic structure methods about magnetic properties of molecular and extended inorganic systems. First section presents an article about electronic transport in molecular junctions based on coordination compounds. Calculations were performed employing the Non-Equilibrium Green’s Functions in conjunction with DFT method. The study discusses the magnetotransport properties of an iron(II) spin-crossover complex. Second block deals with tunability of spin crossover properties in a porous metalorganic framework by small molecule absorption. The systems were modeled employing DFT calculations. Eight different guest moleclules were considered (CS2, I2, furan, thiourea, SO2, pyrazine, thiophene and pyrrole). Changes in experimental spin transition temperature were related with differences in electronic energy between spin states. Specific host-guest interactions were studied by interaction energy calculations and Crystal Orbital Displacent curves. Third section focus on magnetic properties of lanthanide complexes calculated by the CASSCF+RASSI method. The first article analyzes the single molecule magnet (SMM) properties of 20 mononuclear disprosium(III) complexes. The calculated magnetic parameters were compared with published AC susceptibility measurements. The effect of the coordination environment on SMM properties was further studied by model systems. Favorable environments for enhancing SMM behavior are suggested. The other three articles of this section deal with magnetic properties of polynuclear lanthanide complexes. The role of anisotropy on SMM properties and the nature of interactions between magnetic centers (exchange and dipolar) are discussed. The last block is about exchange interactions in polynuclear complexes. Coupling constants were calculated by means of DFT calculations (Broken Symmetry approximation). Simulated susceptibility and magnetization curves were obtained by exact diagonalization of the spin Hamiltonian and quantum Monte Carlo methods. The first work of this section is about the influence of exchange on magnetocaloric properties of gadolinium compounds. The magnitude of magnetocaloric effect was evaluated by the calculation of the magnetic entropy change. Favorable conditions for enhancing magnetocaloric response are discussed. Las two articles focus on magnetic exchange in polynuclear transition metal compounds. Calculated coupling constants were analyzed in terms of geometry through established magnetostructural correlations.

This thesis presents different strategies for the design of molecular complexes with the requirements to be used as two-qubit quantum gates. The approaches followed towards the preparation of potential qubit systems have been carried out focusing on the synthesis of ligands with β-diketone coordination units, which are very versatile for the design of metallocluster assemblies. One of the main advantages of using this kind of ligands is that they can be easily prepared through simple Claisen condensation, providing different combinations and possibilities for the addition of big variety of donor atoms and pockets. Each ligand has been designed for the preparation of predefined magnetic coordination complexes that can fulfill the conditions of a two-qubit molecular quantum gate. The different complexes synthesized within this thesis can be defined in two different categories: Molecular pairs of well-defined and weakly coupled metal clusters, and complexes of two dissimilar and weakly coupled anisotropic metal ions. In addition, the use of the designed ligands for the preparation of metallo-helicates has been also carried out. The description and study of their helicoidal structure is also shown, using the ligand H4L1 with trivalent and tetravalent metal ions like FeIII, GaIII or UIV. - Molecules featuring two weakly coupled clusters: The approach is based on the design of molecules featuring two well defined coordination clusters that could represent ideal systems for realizing two-qubit quantum gates, as long as each cluster exhibits the appropriate spin properties. Two different ligand-based strategies have been followed for the preparation of such molecular pairs of well-defined metal clusters. The first one is based on the design of poly-β-diketone ligands exhibiting two groups of coordination pockets, which serve to aggregate metals in close proximity. Following this approach, the ligand is responsible for having metals grouped into two clusters, as well as for keeping each metal group together within each subsystem. The structural characteristics of H4L1 provides the requirements for the construction of this kind of clusters, since it might align and separate metals into two dimetallic entities. The goal has been achieved by using the deprotonated ligand that organizes the metals in two groups within molecular linear arrays, saturating the equatorial positions. Compounds with NiII, CuII and CoII metal ions are described and studied. The second strategy is based on the preparation of poly-β-diketone ligands with an additional X donor atom in the middle for acting as a “template” for the aggregation of metals into linear clusters, further linked as molecular pairs by auxiliary ligands Organic ligands like H4L2 or H2L3 fulfill the requirements to aggregate closely spaced metals, which can be then used as building blocks to be linked into molecular pairs by other bifunctional external ligands. An example using CoII is described and studied. - Dinuclear complexes of anisotropic metal ions: The synthesis of complexes of two dissimilar and weakly coupled lanthanides has been used as approach for the construction of molecular prototypes of CNOT quantum gates. The ligand-based strategy considers the design of non-symmetric ligands as a possible way of having two inequivalent lanthanide qubits within a molecule. The ligand H3L4 exhibits a collection of donor groups disposed to favor the aggregation of two metals in different coordination environments. The use of lanthanide ions are good candidates for encoding quantum information following such approach, since they can exhibit strong anisotropy and very well isolated ground state doublets ±mJ (effective S = ½). In addition, lanthanide ions have been proved to have spin states with long decoherence, with T2 timescales that can reach values up to 7 μs.[41] A detailed study of a vast number of dinuclear homo- and heterometallic lanthanide coordination complexes is exposed, including an exhaustive study for some of them to prove their possibilities as CNOT and √SWAP quantum gates., El trabajo realizado en esta tesis doctoral se basa en el diseño, la síntesis y el estudio de complejos de coordinación, centrándose en la comprensión de sus propiedades magnéticas y la posibilidad de su aplicación en la computación cuántica. Para el diseño de estos materiales moleculares, tres diferentes propuestas han sido llevadas a cabo. En primer lugar, se han desarrollado ligandos capaces de agregar metales paramagnéticos en dos grupos diferentes, definiendo de esta manera los dos posibles bits cuánticos de una puerta lógica. Complejos de coordinación homo- y heterometálicos con NiII, CoII y CuII han sido sintetizados y caracterizados para tal efecto. La segunda estrategia seguida ha estado centrada en el diseño de complejos de coordinación lineales para su posterior ensamblaje en parejas de compuestos. Se han desarrollado ligandos que favorezcan la complejación de este tipo de topología, obteniéndose un compuesto de CoII con las propiedades estructurales idóneas para su ensamblaje. Utilizando el ligando bifuncional 4.4’-bipiridina, se ha podido unir dos entidades [Co4] obteniendo así otro prototipo de “parejas moleculares”. La tercera estrategia se ha centrado en el diseño de moléculas asimétricas para facilitar la definición de cada bit cuántico dentro de la entidad molecular. Para ello, se ha sintetizado un ligando no simétrico, que ha sido utilizado para obtener complejos dinucleares homo- y heterometálicos de iones lantánido. Se ha obtenido compuestos con todos los elementos de la serie de los lantánidos. Su estudio magnético y estructural ha mostrado que los dos centros metálicos de estas entidades moleculares son distintos, lo que ha permitido definir el espín de cada ion lantánido como un bit cuántico. El estudio magnético a muy bajas temperaturas de un compuesto de dos átomos de terbio(III), por ejemplo, ha permitido definir dos puertas lógicas: la CNOT y la √SWAP. Utilizando el espectro de energías de los estados magnéticos de la molécula, se han observado las transiciones entre dichos estados en relación a las dos operaciones lógicas.

[spa] El objetivo general que se ha planteado en este trabajo de tesis ha sido la obtención de nanopartículas magnéticas (NMPs) que puedan presentar aplicaciones biomédicas. El tipo de NPMs desarrolladas han sido, por una parte, magnetoliposomas, y, por otra, un ferrofluido formado por magnetita estabilizada con polietilenglicol (PEG). Como premisas de partida, se ha fijado que cualquier muestra obtenida de tener un tamaño inferior a 200 nm, estabilidad mínima de 24 horas, y un comportamiento propio de los ferrofluidos ante un campo magnético. Sobre aquellos productos que cumplían los citados requisitos se han ido introduciendo modificaciones hasta obtener un producto estable con las propiedades antes indicadas. Se estudiaron dos aplicaciones terapéuticas de las partículas sintetizadas: como sistemas adecuados para terapia hipertérmica, y como sistemas transportadores de fármacos dirigidos bajo la acción de un campo magnético. Los magnetoliposomas obtenidos encapsulaban o bien un ferrofluido aniónico comercial, o bien el ferrofluido obtenido con PEG en liposomas empleando el método de fase reversa seguida de extrusión. Estos liposomas presentaban un diámetro de partícula de unos 200 nm, eran superparamagnéticos, muy estables y con las tasas de encapsulación más elevadas que las obtenidas por otros métodos. Se ha obtenido un ferrofluido por co‐precipitación de sales férricas en presencia de PEG. El PEG no estaba modificado y su interacción con la magnetita es de tipo físico. Se han obtenido nanopartículas de magnetita con un tamaño medio de 12 nm. Se ha estudiado el efecto de hipertermia y termoablación inducida de estas NPMs en fantoms, materiales con propiedades dieléctricas y de permitividad semejantes a los tejidos reales sobre los que se pretende aplicar la terapia. Se comprobó el funcionamiento de los aplicadores de radiación, una guía de onda y una antena de microondas, así como, el uso de las NPMs como potenciadores y como agentes para focalizar la energía en la zona deseada. Se demostró, que utilizando en conjunto el aplicador con las NPMs es posible focalizar la energía sobre el tumor evitando el calentamiento del tejido sano circundante, lograr incrementos de temperatura en el rango terapéutico y controlar los incrementos de temperatura en el tejido. Se ha estudiado la biodistribución de los magnetoliposomas en ratones a los que se les había inducido inflamación. Se confirmó que las NPMs se acumulan principalmente en el foco inflamatorio sin la necesidad de dirigirlos mediante un campo magnético externo. En un segundo estudio se observó que, además, si se le aplica en la zona inflamatoria un campo magnético externo, la cantidad de NPMs aumenta en el exudado, y disminuye en sangre, hígado y bazo. Esto demuestra que los magnetoliposomas pueden ser utilizados como vehículo de transporte, para dirigir fármacos a zonas de interés terapéutico, con lo que podríamos reducir la dosis de fármaco administrada y aumentar la eficacia del tratamiento y prevenir los efectos secundarios., [eng] To obtain magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) for biomedical applications was the primary objective of this thesis. Two types of MNPs have been developed. On one hand, magnetoliposomes and secondly, a ferrofluid formed by magnetite stabilized with polyethylene glycol (PEG). As a starting premise, samples of 200 nm, 24 h minimum stability and proper behavior of ferrofluids to a magnetic field are set to be the starting premises of this research. Specific modifications have been introduced to products that fulfill these requirements in order to obtain a stable product with the properties mentioned above. Two therapeutic applications of synthesized particles were studied as suitable systems for hyperthermia therapy, and as targeted drug carrier systems under the action of a magnetic field. The obtained magnetoliposomes encapsulate a commercial anionic ferrofluid or the ferrofluid stabilized with PEG inside liposomes using the method of reverse phase followed by extrusion. These liposomes have a particle diameter of 200 nm, are superparamagnetic, very stable and encapsulation rates higher than those obtained by other methods. Using co‐precipitation method of ferric salts in the presence of PEG the ferrofluid was obtained. The PEG was not modified and its interaction with the magnetite is of physical type. MNPs we obtained with an average size of 12 nm. The effect of induced hyperthermia and thermal ablation of these NPMS in phantoms have been studied. Phantoms are materials with dielectric and permittivity properties tissues‐like in which the therapy is intended to be applied. We demonstrated the operation of the radiation applicator, a waveguide and a microwave antenna, and also the use of NPMS as enhancers and agents to focus the energy on the desired area. It was demonstrated the usage of applicator together with the NPMS is possible to focus the energy on the tumor while sparing the surrounding healthy tissue heating. Furthermore an enhanced of the temperature on the therapeutic range and the control of the increases of temperature in the tissue were obtained. We have studied the biodistribution of magnetoliposomas in mice that had been induced inflammation. NPMS was confirmed to accumulate mainly in the inflammatory focus directing without using an external magnetic field in the exudate. Moreover, in a second study it was observed that, if this external magnetic field was applied in the inflammatory area, the amount of NPMS increases in the exudate and decreases in blood, liver, and spleen. This demonstrate that magnetoliposomas can be used as transport vehicle for drug targeting to areas of therapeutic interest, and reduce the dose of drug administered and increases the efficiency of the treatment preventing side effects.

The carbon coating protects the iron core from oxidation, chemical and thermal degradation and hence, magnetic cores present stable magnetic properties when nanoparticles are exhibited in air or other environments. Several studies about carbon-encapsulated magnetic nanoparticles were already reported. However, nanoparticles are obtained rather polydisperse and not very uniform in composition, making very difficult their use for several applications. The aim of this thesis is the production and characterisation of carbon-encapsulated iron nanoparticles showing very narrow size distributions with well-characterised magnetic properties for several applications, in particular, those related to the biomedical field (hyperthermia, drug delivery or as agents contrast in MRI). However, the systematic study of these applications was not the framework of this thesis. The content of this dissertation comprises the design of two arc-discharge plasma (ADP) reactors (a conventional and a modified one); the experimental study of the different reactor parameters involved; the morphological, structural and magnetic characterisation of the obtained nanoparticles; the comprehension of the mechanisms involve in the formation of this kind of nanoparticles in comparison with nanoparticles obtained by other methods; and finally, a first approach to the functionalisation of the nanoparticles for the biomedical applications. This thesis is structured in four parts: Backgrounds (Chapter 1), Nanotools (Chapter 2 and Chapter 3), Results (from Chapter 4 to Chapter 8) and finally, the Conclusions. Chapter 1 - Basis of carbon-encapsulated iron nanoparticles: A general introduction of the nanoparticle properties derived from their nanometric dimensions is presented in this chapter. The state of the art about the formation mechanisms and techniques used for the generation of carbon-encapsulated iron nanoparticles is described. Several applications of this kind of nanoparticles in fields such as biomedicine, electronics or food and environmental, are also presented. Chapter 2 - Characterisation methods: The most common characterisation techniques used to investigate the morphological, composition, structural and magnetic properties are described within this chapter. Details about the equipments and conditions used during this thesis for the characterisation of the nanoparticles are also reported. Chapter 3 - Experimental set-up: In this chapter, the description of two different arc-discharge reactors used during this thesis is presented. A first reactor (the conventional ADP) was developed by following similar experimental setups described in the literature. Second reactor (a modified ADP) was designed to overcome the disadvantages from the first reactor and to obtain high quality nanoparticles (narrower size distribution, uniform composition). Chapter 4 - Preliminary studies from conventional ADP reactor: This chapter presents a design of experiments (DOE) based on the Plackett-Burman design in order to evaluate the reactor parameters that influence the most the final characteristics of the nanoparticles. The study was performed using the conventional ADP reactor and the preliminary results were very useful for the development of next generation of experiments using the second reactor, the modified ADP. Chapter 5 - Generation of nanoparticles by a modified ADP reactor: Morphological and structural properties of the nanoparticles obtained by the modified ADP reactor are presented. The discussion of the effect of the most relevant parameters on the formation of the nanoparticles was reported. Iron core diameters with corresponding size distribution as well as the carbon shell formation obtained under different parameter conditions were investigated. Chapter 6 - Magnetic properties of the nanoparticles: A systematic study of the magnetic properties of the nanoparticles obtained in Chapter 5 is performed. Size-dependent variables such as magnetic moments, coercivity values, blocking temperature and anisotropy energies were presented. Magnetic properties were in agreement with the morphological characteristics of the nanoparticles. Chapter 7 – Thermally induced structural evolution of the nanoparticles: The comparison of annealed nanoparticles obtained by mADP and chemical vapour deposition (CVD) method is presented in this chapter. Differences on the morphological, structural and magnetic properties were studied. Structural evolution of nanoparticles during annealing under in-situ TEM observations was investigated. Chapter 8 - First approach to biomedical applications: As a first approach to biomedical applications, the stabilisation of the nanoparticles in aqueous solution by using polyvinyl-alcohol was investigated. Results of the internalisation of the nanoparticles into HeLa cells are presented., [cat] Les nanopartícules magnètiques de ferro recobertes de carboni s’estan investigant en gran mesura, ja que presenten avantatjoses propietats sobre d’altres recobriments protectors del nucli magnètic com els polímers o la sílice. El recobriment de carboni protegeix el nucli de ferro de l’oxidació, la degració química i tèrmica, d’aquesta manera els nuclis presenten propietats magnètiques estables quan les nanopartícules s’exhibeixen en aire o en un altre medi. S’han realitzat diversos estudis sobre aquest tipus de nanopartícules, però aquest tipus de nanopartícules s’obtenen amb gran dispersió de grandàries i poca uniformitat en les seves característiques. És encara un repte en aquest camp la producció de nanopartícules de ferro recobertes de carbon amb propietats morfològiques i estructurals, així com l’estudi sistemàtic de les seves propietats magnètiques. Per aquest motiu, l’objectiu d’aquesta tesi es centra en la producció i caracterització de nanopartícules superparamagnètiques de ferro recobertes de carboni amb estreta distribució de mides i amb propietats magnètiques ben caracteritzades per diverses aplicacions, en particular, les relacionades amb el camp de la biomedicina. No obstant això, l’estudi sistemàtic d’aquestes aplicacions es troba fora del marc d’aquesta tesi. El contingut s’estructura en quatre parts: • La primera part d’introducció conté els aspectos bàsics sobre aquest tipus de nanopartícules, així com les propietats derivades de la seva mida nanomètrica, les tecnologies que s’utilitzen per generar aquest tipus de nanopartícules, una explicació sobre els possibles mecanismes responsables de la seva formació i les principals aplicacions d’aquestes nanopartícules. • La segona part descriu les tècniques utilitzades per la seva caracterització que engloben tècniques de microscopia, de difracció de raigs-X, d’espectroscòpia Raman, per la caracterització col•loidal de les nanopartícules fins la seva caracterització magnètica. També inclou la descripció detallada dels equips basats en la descàrrega d’arc utilitzats per la seva producció. El primer equip es va dissenyar seguint les característiques d’un reactor convencional (conventional ADP reactor). El segon equip basat en la mateixa tecnologia de descàrrega d’arc, però modificat (mADP reactor) i dissenyat especialment amb l’objectiu de millorar les característiques del producte final. • La tercera part exposa els resultats obtinguts durant aquesta tesi. L’estudi previ del reactor convencional basat en un disseny d’experiments de Plackett-Burman per avaluar l’efecte dels diferents paràmetres del reactor en la grandària dels nuclis de ferro. A partir d’aquest estudi, es va realitzar un estudi més específic en el nou reactor modificat on es van estudiar l’efecte del corrent d’arc utilizat, la velocitat del flux d’heli i el contigut de ferrocè com a matèria prima del ferro. Després es va realitzar l’estudi sistemàtic de les seves propietats magnètiques observant la dependència d’aquestes propietats amb la grandària dels nuclis de ferro. A continuació, es va presentar la comparació d’aquestes nanopartícules amb d’altres obtingudes mitjantçant el mètode de dipòsit químic en fase vapor (CVD). A partir d’aquesta comparació es va estudiar l’evolució estructural d’aquestes nanopartícules sotmetes a un tractament tèrmic en observació in-situ d’un microscopi de transmissió electrònica. Finalment, es va presentar un primer estudi de les propietats col•loidals en suspensió d’aquestes nanopartícules recobertes amb un polímer d’alcohol de polivinil (PVA). Es presenta un primer estudi de l’internalització d’aquestes nanopartícules en cèl•lules tumorals HeLa. • Per acabar es presenten les conclusions i l’apèndix que conté informació sobre les mostres produïdes i un llistat de publicacions, congressos, patents resultants d’aquest treball.

El treball que es presenta es basa en la síntesi i estudi estructural i magnètic de compostos polinuclears de coure i manganès amb lligands de tipus oxima. L’objectiu dels compostos de coure és l’estudi magnètic a baixa temperatura de sistemes de diverses nuclearitats basats en el triangle Cu3. En el cas dels compostos de manganès, l’objectiu és la síntesi de sistemes que presentin comportament d’imant unimolecular (o SMM). En aquest treball s’han emprat majoritàriament lligands tipus oxima, en les seves formes piridil, pirazil i saliciloxima. Tant per al manganès com per al coure, els compostos obtinguts tenen forma majoritàriament triangular. En la majoria dels casos els lligands oxima ocupen posicions equatorials del triangle, tant per al coure com per al manganès. S’han obtingut nombrosos compostos basats Cu3 amb diferents nuclearitats (Cu3, Cu6) i dimensionalitats (compostos mono, bi i tridimensionals). S’ha realitzat un anàlisi magnètic de 2-300 K trobant una relació magneto-estructural que determina que com més petita sigui la distància entre el pla Cu3 i l’oxigen central, més antiferromagnètic serà el valor de l’acoblament magnètic (J). Tanmateix, també s’ha comprovat com es pot tenir cert control sobre la dimensionalitat dels sistemes segons el nombre i la posició dels àtoms donadors de densitat electrònica del lligand utilitzat a la síntesi. Cal destacar sobretot el paper del lligand pirazina ja que la presència d’un segon nitrogen a l’anell aromàtic possibilita la coordinació amb una molècula contigua. D’aquesta manera s’aconsegueixen sistemes de dimensionalitat més elevada. Un dels sistemes obtinguts consta d’una xarxa de dinuclears de coure formats al voltant d’un triangle de coure que fa de plantilla. L’estudi magnètic d’aquests compostos inclou les anomenades Interaccions Antisimètriques, emprant una equació exposada recentment i que permet ajustar amb èxit la susceptibilitat magnètica a baixa temperatura. També s’observa com aquesta interacció també té incidència en la mesura d’EPR on s’observa l’aparició de noves bandes que obliguen a distingir entre una g paral•lela i un altra g perpendicular. Sis dels compostos de manganès obtinguts compleixen tots els requisits necessaris per a presentar comportament d’imant unimolecular; espín elevat, anisotropia magnètica i absència d’interaccions intermoleculars. Aquests paràmetres seran també els que determinin la força del caràcter SMM, encara que no és possible sistematitzar el seu comportament. L’estructura de tots sis compostos es basa en un triangle de manganesos (III) que tenen els eixos Jahn-Teller paral•lels. Això determina la nuclearitat dels compostos segons si contenen un, dos o quatre triangles. La interacció entre els triangles és ferromagnètica, el que determinarà que l’estat fonamental de l’espín sigui elevat. Els compostos amb estats fonamentals petits (S=2) no presenten comportament de SMM. Per altra banda, altres compostos amb estats fonamentals superiors (S=4 i S=11 respectivament) tampoc no es comporten com a imants unimoleculars. Això és degut a l’existència d’interaccions intermoleculars fortes i a la combinació d’aquestes interaccions amb el fet que els eixos Jahn-Teller no es trobin ben alineats, cancel•lant d’aquesta manera els moments magnètics i l’anisotropia magnètica uniaxial de la molècula. Dins els compostos que sí que presenten comportament d’SMM també podem trobar comportaments diferents. El caràcter SMM més marcat el trobem en el compost format per quatre triangles de manganès (Mn12), amb un estat fonamental elevat (S=8), una D considerable i interaccions intermoleculars no gaire significatives. També s’hi troben compostos que encara que tenen un estat fonamental elevat, es comporten com a imants febles degut a la presència d’interaccions intermoleculars, eixos Jahn-Teller no paral•lels o els dos factors al mateix temps. Per últim i de manera residual també s’han obtingut altre tipus de compostos emprant el lligand pentaeritritol, amb el qual s’ha obtingut un Mn12 que presenta caràcter SMM, i lligands carboxilat., This work is based in the synthesis of polynuclear copper and manganese compounds and their structural and magnetic study. The ligands used are of the oxime type (pyridyl, pyrazil and salicyl oxime). The majority of the obtained compounds show a triangle shape in which the ligands occupy the equatorial positions. Copper compounds based on the Cu3 with different nuclearities were obtained (Cu3, Cu6). Also it was possible to tune the dimensionality of the complexes depending on the ligand. The pyrazyne ligand possesses a second N in the aromatic ring that coordinates to a copper from a neighboring molecule. A magnetic study was carried out signaling that the closer the central O was to the Cu3 the more antiferromagnetic J value will be. These systems present antisymetric interactions which affect susceptibility and EPR measurements at low temperatures. Six of the manganese compounds present the characteristics typically observed in SMMs (Single Molecule Magnets); high spin and magnetic anisotropy and the absence or intermolecular interactions. They are all based in a manganese (III) triangle with parallel Jahn‐Teller axes and contain from one to four triangles (nuclearities are Mn3, Mn6 and Mn12). The interaction between triangles is ferromagnetic which makes possible a higher spin state. Compounds with a S=2 do not show SMM response. Others with higher values such as S=4, 11 do not behave like magnets due to the existence of strong intermolecular interactions combined with the fact that the Jahn‐Teller axes of the manganese ions are not well aligned. Among the complexes that present SMM response different behaviors are observed. A Mn12 compound presents the higher magnetic reversal barrier with a S=8 and an also significant D value an no interactions between molecules. Other compounds have a weak SMM behavior due to intermolecular interactions or Jahn‐Teller axes not fully aligned. A few compounds were also obtained from carboxylates and the pentaeritritol ligand (also showing SMM response).

[eng] The work presented in this thesis consists of two distinct parts. The first years of my work focused on the development and improvement of a new equipment built to study magnetic and electrical properties, particularly applying microwaves in reflection and transmission conditions. The sample space in conventional cryostats with superconducting magnets is usually smaller than 10-mm-diameter. Our equipment consists of a hollow cylindrical cryostat having a 33-mm-diameter hole all along its vertical axis. These characteristics enable the measurement of large samples and the use of big resonant cavities to get to a wider microwave (MW) range, particularly in transmission measurements. The cryostat has a superconducting magnet made of a solenoid that applies a magnetic field from -5 T to 5 T, and a temperature controller that works in the range 1.8 - 300 K. The system is cooled down with nitrogen and helium and the temperature can be controlled with the precision required by each experiment using a heater and a needle valve. Different probes for a wide range of experiments in our cryostat have been developed in order to be as versatile as possible. Following this idea each one has been divided in two halves that can be combined as it is preferred in each experiment. Each probe is made of a 8-to-10-mm-diameter stainless steel tube that is used to protect and give some stiffness to the measuring device. A coaxial cable and different waveguides are added to these stainless steel jackets, so we end up having nine halves, four upper parts that can be combined with five lower parts. There are three waveguides working in the frequency ranges 33-50 GHz (WR22), 50-75 GHz (WR15) and 75-110 GHz (WR10), and a coaxial cable that maintains the fundamental mode at a frequency of 60 GHz. In the extra lower part a 16-pin Fischer connector is added at the bottom in order to be able to perform more resistance experiments. Once the probes have been built, they have been tested to make sure the system is able to reach high vacuum and to be cooled down. Problems found along the way have been solved and at the end all the probes work properly. Different sample holders have been designed and built according to the needs in each experiment. The system has been tested by reproducing experimental results with Mn12-acetate, as quantum tunneling and magnetic avalanches, and by obtaining new results on microwave transmission in thin TiN films. The second part of the thesis focuses on the measurements of thin TiN films in a dilution refrigerator working with a mixture of 3He and 4He that enables experiments at a few tens of millikelvins. The cryostat also contains a superconductor magnet which can apply a magnetic field up to 5 T. Low-temperature transport properties of nanoperforated superconducting TiN films have been experimentally studied. Resistance measurements have been performed in the critical region of the superconductor-insulator transition (SIT), applying the magnetic field perpendicular to the plane of the structure or the dc current through the sample. SIT is a transition from a superconductor to an insulator state by localizing the Cooper pairs. The evolution of the SIT with temperature, magnetic field and dc current has been investigated in detail. Characteristic parameters have been determined for as-cast thin films using the theory of quantum corrections to conductivity. Disorder-driven and field-induced SITs have been measured. Commensurability effects have been observed down to the lowest experimental temperature, and are emphasized in the more disordered samples. The SIT has been observed for a dc current applied across the sample as changes in the curvature at zero bias current. Experiments prove that electronic transport in the nanoperforated samples is mediated by Andreev conversion. Finally, the existence of the superinsulator state has been experimentally proved., [cat] El treball que es presenta en aquesta tesi consta de dues parts ben diferenciades. La primera pretén el desenvolupament d’un equip experimental concebut per a l’estudi de propietats magnètiques i elèctriques en materials diversos i, en especial, el treball amb radiació de microones en condicions de reflexió i transmissió. La segona s’ha centrat en les mesures de transport d’una capa fina superconductora de nitrur de titani (TiN) de 5 nm de gruix en un criòstat de dilució.

This Ph.D. Thesis has been devoted to the preparation and characterisation of bulk Gd5(SixGe1-x)4 alloys and to the study of the magnetocaloric effect at the first-order magnetostructural transition appearing in these compounds. We summarise the most relevant results from this research:- Bulk Gd5(SixGe1-x)4 samples with 0¡Âx ¡Â0.5 have been prepared by using our home-made arc-melting furnace. Characterisation techniques (SEM, microprobe, XRD, DSC, magnetisation, ac susceptibility) show that the 5:4 phase with the desired x is obtained. Some spread around the nominal value and secondary 5:3 and 1:1 phases are detected. Heat treatment favour the segregation of these secondary phases, but also reduce the spread in the x value. A treatment at 920 ¨¬C for 4 hours in a 10-5 mb vacuum furnace enables a trade-off between phase segregation and removal of x spread.- A new differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), which operates under applied magnetic fields of up to 5 T and within the temperature range 10-300 K, has been developed. This calorimeter enables an accurate determination of the entropy change associated with a magnetostructural phase transition. The transition can be induced by sweeping either T or H. - It has been shown that the Clausius-Clapeyron equation and DSC measurements yield the entropy change associated with the first-order magnetostructural transition, ∆S. If the Maxwell relation is evaluated only within the field range over which the transition takes place, the same value is obtained. When the Maxwell relation is evaluated over the whole field range, the T and H dependences of the magnetisation in each phase outside the transition region yield an additional entropy change to that associated with that of the actual first-order transition. The transition temperature Tt must significantly shift with the applied field, in order to achieve a large MCE taking advantage of ∆S.- DSC under H has been used to measure ∆S for Gd5(SixGe1-x)4, x ¡Â0.5. ∆S scales with Tt, which is a direct consequence of the fact that Tt is tuned by x and H and it is thus expected to be universal for any material showing a field-induced transition. The specific shape of ∆S vs. Tt will depend on the details of the phase diagram, Tt(x). The scaling of ∆S shows the equivalence of magnetovolume and substitution-related effects in Gd5(SixGe1-x)4 alloys.- The variation of the transition field with the transition temperature, dHt/dTt, has been studied in Gd5(SixGe1-x)4 for 0¡Âx ¡Â0.5. It is shown that dHt/dTt governs the scaling of ∆S with Tt. Two distinct behaviours for dHt/dTt have been found on the two compositional ranges where the magnetostructural transition occurs, showing the difference in the strength of the magnetoelastic coupling in this system.- It has been shown that an unreported field-induced magnetic phase transition exists from the AFM phase to a phase which presents short-range correlations (SRAFM). The results suggest that the transition results from the breaking of the long-range AFM correlations when a magnetic field is applied, which leads to competing FM and AFM short-range correlations. FM correlations are also relevant in the whole long-range AFM phase. The expected transition from the SRAFM to the PM phase takes place at ~240 K at zero field, being widened and smoothed under applied field. This finding in the Ge-rich Gd5(SixGe1-x)4 alloys arises from the competition between the intraslab FM interactions and the interslab AFM interactions.- The dynamics of the first-order transition in Gd5(SixGe1-x)4 alloys has been studied by cycling virgin samples. The field-induced entropy change increases during the first cycles, then reaching a stationary value. This behaviour is related to the avalanche distribution, which also evolves with cycling. The structure of avalanches becomes repetitive after a few cycles tending towards a power-law distribution, unveiling the athermal character of the transition.

Els materials magnètics són molt importants en el desenvolupament de la tecnologia actual. Durant molts anys, la recerca científica en magnetisme ha estat dirigida a l'estudi de les propietats magnètiques dels elements i dels seus aliatges en funció de la temperatura, amb l'objectiu d'optimitzar el cost i la densitat magnètica utilitzable tecnològicament. El progrés en aquest camp ha estat obstaculitzat pel fet que el magnetisme a nivell molecular no s'entén d'un manera adequada. Aquest és el motiu per al qual, avui en dia, hi ha una clara tendència a estudiar els fenòmens magnètics a nivell microscòpic. El perquè d'aquesta tendència és molt senzill: si es controlessin els principis moleculars que regeixen el magnetisme, seria factible el disseny i la síntesi de nous materials magnètics. Ara bé, d'entre tots els materials magnètics, el camp dels materials magnètics purament orgànics de base molecular és el més interessant des del punt de vista teòric, atès el grau de control que s'ha assolit en la seva síntesi i a la dificultat per entendre el mecanisme de la seva interacció magnètica. Aquest tipus de materials combinaran les propietats inherents dels compostos orgànics amb propietats magnètiques; per tant es podran usar en aparells òptics per manipular la llum polaritzada, dissenyar magnets que no siguin conductors elèctrics o crear possibles aplicacions biomèdiques, com per exemple agents de contrast selectiu en RMN o per dirigir l’aplicació de determinats medicaments. Totes aquestes propietats i possibles aplicacions van motivar l’estudi d’una de les famílies de compostos més interessants i millor documentades en el camp del ferromagnetisme orgànic: la dels derivats alfa-nitronil-nitròxid. Totes aquestes molècules tenen electrons desaparellats (en general, son doblets), fet que permetrà que, en agrupar-se formant un sòlid, aquest solid pugui presentar magnetisme. Depenent de com s'agrupin, l'estat electrònic resultant serà d'alt spin (ferromagnètic) o de baix spin (anti-ferromagnètic). Així doncs, l'empaquetament cristal·lí d'aquests radicals lliures persistents decidirà si les interaccions ferromagnètiques intermoleculars es poden propagar arreu del cristall. En conseqüència, el primer objectiu d'aquest treball ha estat posar a punt un procediment sistemàtic per racionalitzar l'estructura de qualsevol cristall molecular. Aquesta racionalització implica, alhora, un estudi adequat a nivell MP2 de l'energia d'interacció dels contactes intermoleculars existents dins dels cristalls.

El objeto de estudio de esta tesis es la dinámica intragranular de vórtices a bajas temperaturas en distintas muestras pertenecientes esencialmente a las familias de superconductores de alta temperatura crítica (SCAT) con dos planos de talio y con un plano de mercurio (con sustitución parcial por talio) por celda estructural: Tl(2)Ba(2)Cu(3)O(10-6) policristalino prensado [Tl-2223(p)] y en forma de capa fina [Tl-2223(f)], Tl(2)Ba(2)CaCu(2)O(8-6) policristalino en polvo (Tl-2212) y Hg(0.8)Tl(0.2)Ba(2)Ca(2)Cu(3)O(8-6) policristalino prensado [(Hg, Tl)-1223]. A título comparativo, se introducen resultados obtenidos en un par de muestras basadas respectivamente en bismuto, con un dopaje de plomo, y en itrio: Bi(17)Pb(0.3)Sr(2)CaCu(2)O(8+x) monocristalino [(Bi,Pb)-2212] e YBa(2)Cu(3)O(8-6) policristalino prensado (Y-123). Tras la descripción del proceso de preparación y caracterización de cada una de las muestras, la investigación se centra en la medida de la evolución temporal de la imanación (lo que se conoce con el nombre de relajación magnética) y en el estudio de las dependencias con la temperatura y el campo magnético del ritmo de relajación normalizado según diversos criterios. En una de las muestras policristalinas, Tl-2223(p), la aplicación de campos magnéticos menores que el campo critico inferior intragranular permite el estudio de la dinámica intergranular de vórtices.Las medidas de relajación realizadas con distintas intensidades de campo magnético para una temperatura fijada son ajustadas con similar precisión a las leyes logarítmica y potencial, lo que es una evidencia de que el proceso temporal evolutivo de la imanación de todas las muestras se encuentra en sus primeros estadios, esto es, en el rango de tiempos moderados. A partir de estas medidas se estudia .la dependencia con el campo magnético aplicado, H(a)' del ritmo de relajación cuántico normalizado según diversos criterios: R(H(a)). Para cada muestra, el criterio de normalización influye únicamente en el valor numérico del ritmo de relajación pero no en el comportamiento general de la dependencia R(H(a)), lo que sugiere la escasa importancia que desde el punto de vista teórico tiene la elección de un determinado criterio. El estudio de esta dependencia en cinco de las muestras [no se ha realizado en (Bi,Pb)-2212] pone de manifiesto la existencia en tres de ellas [Tl-2223(p), Tl-2223(f), (Hg,TI)-1223] de una transición en la dimensionalidad del proceso cuántico de relajación, pasando del movimiento de líneas de flujo 3D al movimiento de vórtices 2D a medida que aumenta la intensidad del campo magnético. La determinación experimental del campo para el que tiene lugar la transición en las tres muestras mencionadas, el campo de transición dimensional, permite la posterior estimación del valor del parámetro de anisotropía correspondiente a la temperatura de medida. La discordancia entre nuestros valores y los hallados en la bibliografía ponen de manifiesto la importancia del método de medida y de la forma y geometría de la muestra. Los valores obtenidos en Tl-2223(p) y (Hg,Tl)-1223 son muy parecidos entre sí e inferiores al valor correspondiente a TI-2223(f). En el caso de la fase Tl-2223, esto indica la influencia decisiva que la forma y geometría de la muestra tienen sobre el grado de anisotropía de la misma. La insuficiencia de datos experimentales imposibilita la detección del régimen 3D en Tl-2212 y del régimen 2D en Y-123 y. por consiguiente, la determinación de los parámetros de anisotropía correspondientes.La dependencia creciente con el campo magnético del ritmo de relajación normalizado en el régimen 3D continúa la predicción teórica del mismo tipo de dependencia para el parámetro de anisotropía en SCAT. Los valores experimentales del ritmo de relajación normalizado en el régimen cuántico 2D concuerdan bastante bien, cualitativa y cuantitativamente, con las estimaciones realizadas en el marco de los modelos teóricos de dinámica cuántica de vórtices en los límites altamente disipativo (teoría CCC) y no disipativo (efecto túnel Hall), a pesar del uso de valores muy aproximados para los parámetros involucrados en las mismas. Estos modelos permiten además interpretar la observación experimental de la dependencia decreciente con la distancia interlaminar del ritmo de relajación normalizado en el régimen 2D.El estudio de la dependencia técnica del ritmo de relajación normalizado, R(T) revela la presencia en casi todas las muestras investigadas, y para casi todos las intensidades de campo magnético aplicadas, de una transición en el mecanismo responsable del movimiento de vórtices a bajas temperaturas, pasando, a medida que desciende la temperatura. del salto de las barreras de energía por activación técnica al efecto túnel cuántico a través de las mismas. Las excepciones son (Hg,TI)-1223 con un campo magnético de 10 kOe, donde sólo se observa el régimen técnico sin asomo alguno de régimen cuántico, y (Bi,Pb)-2212 con un campo magnético de 100 Oe. donde el régimen cuántico empieza a sugerirse por debajo de la mínima temperatura de medida. En ambos casos es necesaria la extensión del estudio a este rango de temperaturas si se quiere detectar el movimiento cuántico de vórtices.En algunas de las muestras investigadas [Tl-2223(p), Tl-2223(t) con 500 De y (Bi,Pb)-2212] la transición del régimen técnico al cuántico tiene lugar de manera progresiva, lo que indica que el ritmo de relajación cuántico a temperaturas finitas está asistido térmicamente. Para el resto de muestras o intensidades de campo magnético [Tl-2212, Tl-2223(f) con 50 De y (Hg,Tl)-1223 con 3 kOe], la transición tiene lugar de manera brusca, indicando la ausencia de dicha asistencia. No hemos podido hallar una razón por la que una muestra presente un tipo u otro de transición según la intensidad de campo magnético. En los casos de transición gradual, las curvas experimentales han sido ajustadas a dos leyes que caracterizan sendos límites disipativos (altamente disipativo y no disipativo) del sistema. A pesar de ser matemáticamente muy buenos, los ajustes se ven desplazados hacia temperaturas mayores que las teóricamente predichas y razonablemente esperadas, debido a la insuficiencia de datos experimentales en el régimen cuántico. La similitud de los ajustes, de los valores de la temperatura de transición del régimen estrictamente térmico al régimen cuántico asistido térmicamente y de las estimaciones del ritmo de relajación normalizado obtenidos en cada una de las muestras, impiden extraer una conclusión sobre el grado de disipación y comprobar si las muestras investigadas se encuentran en el límite no disipativo predicho teóricamente.En todas las muestras el proceso dinámico es 3D, con la posible excepción de Tl-2212, donde muy probablemente sea 2D. Los valores experimentales del ritmo de relajación normalizado en el régimen cuántico concuerdan cualitativamente con las estimaciones realizadas en el marco de los modelos teóricos para la dinámica cuántica de vórtices en los dos límites disipativos. Sin embargo, en ninguna de las muestras, con la excepción de Tl-2212, la concordancia es también cuantitativa. Esto es interpretado como una consecuencia de la dependencia con el campo magnético del parámetro de anisotropía en el régimen 3D. Esta dependencia es distinta para cada una de las muestras, lo que imposibilita la comparación razonable de los correspondientes valores experimentales del ritmo de relajación cuántico.Por último, la dinámica de vórtices intergranulares es estudiada en TI-2223(p) con la aplicación de un campo magnético de 50 Oe. Las líneas generales del proceso evolutivo son muy parecidas a las correspondientes a la dinámica de vórtices intragranulares, pero ambas dinámicas difieren en los valores experimentales de los parámetros característicos: los valores del ritmo de relajación normalizado en los regímenes cuántico y térmico y de la temperatura de transición en el caso intergranular son menores y mayor respectivamente que en el caso intragranular, lo que es interpretado como una consecuencia del mayor tamaño de los vórtices y la mayor altura de las barreras de energía intergranulares., The goal of this work is the study of quantum vortex motion at low temperatures in different samples which essentially belong to the families of high-temperature superconductors (HTSC's) with two thallium oxide and one mercury oxide layer per crystalline cell: sintered polycrystalline and epitaxial thin-films of TI(2)Ba(2)Ca(2)Cu(3)O(10-6) [TI-2223(p) and Tl-2223(f), respectively], powdered TI(2)Ba(2)Ca(2)Cu(3)O(8-6) (TI-2212), and sintered polycrystalline Hg(0.8)Tl(0.2)Ba(2)Ca(2)Cu(3)O(8+6)[(Hg,TI)-1223]. In order to compare, we introduce a couple of samples respectively based on bismuth (with a small lead doping) and ytrium: monocrystalline Bi(1.7)Pb(0.3)Sr(2)CaCu(2)O(g+x) [(Bi,Pb)-2212] and sintered polycrystalline YBa(2)Cu(2)O(7-6) (Y-123). After the description 01' the process of preparation and characterization of each sample, the investigation is confined to the measurement of the time evolution of magnetization (what is known as magnetic relaxation) and the study of the temperature and magnetic field dependence of the normalized relaxation rate.Among the results, we would like to remark the following innovative points:- As magnetic field increases, a transition in the dimensionality of the quantum relaxation process, from the motion of 3D flux lines to 2D pancake vortices, has been detected in the magnetic field dependence of the normalized relaxation rate. The determination of the dimensional crossover field allows to estimate the anisotropy parameter of each sample.- Quantum vortex motion of 2D pancake vortices has been detected by means of the study of the thermal dependence of the normalized relaxation rate in the Tl-2212 sample.- Quantum vortex motion of íntergranular vortices has been observed in Tl-2223(P).

[spa] A partir del ligando bisbidentado 1,3-bis(oxamato) propanocuprato, que tiene capacidad de actuar como puente transmisor de interacciones antiferromagnéticas, se han preparado diversos complejos bi y trinucleares. Se han sintetizado tres dinucleares de Cu(II) con las aminas bloqueadoras TN, BIPY y DIEN. Se han medido y ajustado matematicámente sus respuestas de susceptibilidad según la temperatura por ecuaciones de Bleaney-Bowers modificadas. Del primero, al obtenerse estructura cristalina se ha realizado un estudio OM-EH de sus propiedades magnéticas. Asímismo se han sintetizado los complejos trinucleares de Cu(II) con aminas de bloqueo TMEN, BAPA, PMDIEN, ETTMDIEN y PETDIEN. Se han obtenido las estructuras cristalinas de todos excepto el último. Mediante cálculos simplificados OM-EH, se ha intentado relacionar sus propiedades magnéticas medidas experimentalmente con las características estructurales, en especial la geometría de los cationes terminales. Asímismo, se han sintetizado los siguientes trinucleares [ Ni(II)Cu(II)Ni(II) ] según las aminas de bloqueo: BAPA, BQEN, CYCLAM, TMCYCLAM y (3,3,3). Del primero se ha obtenido la estructura cristalina. Se han estudiado los complejos por técnicas de susceptibilidad magnética a temperatura variable y EPR. Las conclusiones nos indican un efecto ZFS en el nivel fundamental para los cuatro últimos productos. Finalmente, se ha sintetizado y caracterizado un complejo [ Mn(II)Cu(II)Mn(II) ]. Al medir la respuesta de susceptibilidad se ha observado un posible efecto ZFS en el estado decuplete fundamental. Para su estudio, ha sido necesario desarrollar las ecuaciones de susceptibilidadad anisotropa y promedio para un sistema de este tipo, que nos ha permitido el ajuste matemático de los datos experimentales.
