This paper investigates whether and w hy the Taiwanese investors in mainland China are pursuing a different location selection strategy from other foreign direct investors. I find that, compared to the general foreign direct investors, Taiwanese direct investors seem to be more dependent on the autonomy of local governments, especially as investment in a locality increases. The security situatsssion across the Taiwan Strait has recently deteriorated rapidly. Scholars and policymakers have attributed this development to the concurrence of an increasingly assertive Communist Party in China, a unilateralist Trump administration in the US, and a new DPP government in Taiwan since 2016. For the Taiwanese, the security concern is on their doorstep, but their attitudes are under-studied. I find that judgments of China's animosity to Taiwan, China's importance for Taiwan's economy, (dis)agreement with the "one country, two systems" formula, concern regarding developments in Hong Kong, (dis)agreement with alliance with Japan and the US, (dis)belief in the US's security commitment to Taiwan, and perception of the comparative strength of China versus the US are closely associated with respondents' choice to ally with China or the US. The article discusses the U.S. military's engagement with maintaining security in Taiwan and its evaluation of a possible Taiwan Strait crisis. The article reports on the study of architectural history in China. According to the author, it is part of the required field of study for aspiring Chinese architects, but does not exist independently as it does in North America. In the average course on architecture, some historical background is given but is not essential for success. Most often, architectural history is seen in a pragmatic sense, and is used to restore or emulate old buildings but is not studied as an end in itself. Even at the Institute of Architectural History in Beijing, its members are listed as architects and not historians.
