In recent years, the programs offered by Danish public libraries have increased in both number and variety, leading to difficulties defining and assessing such programs in a way that encompasses their complexity. To enrich future research and assessments of public library programs, this article presents an empirically based and textually grounded analytical model. Building on prior work collecting more than 2,500 Facebook events announcing public library programs, this article presents the analysis of these textual data. Inspired by grounded theory coding, the content of the Facebook events is categorized in terms of format, content, and role and function. As a result, an analytical model is developed. In light of the analysis, it is argued that public library programs exist between the library collections and the connections they foster. As such, they are an intriguing part of understanding the role and function of public libraries today. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This research examined the beliefs and actions of US midwestern librarians concerning intellectual freedom and collection development. The results are presented in two complementary articles; the first article provided some background and the results pertaining to intellectual freedom, whereas the second article focuses on the results for collection development questions and concludes with a broader discussion. While the first article focused on intellectual freedom beliefs, the second focuses more on actions that are thought to be influenced by those beliefs. The data were obtained through a survey with a 21.37% response rate. In general, respondents—particularly those with master of library science (MLS) degrees—reported agreement with ALA collection development stances. When asked about purchasing hypothetical items, respondents said they would purchase most of them. This prestige study surveyed full-time faculty of American Library Association (ALA)--accredited programs in library and information studies regarding library and information science (LIS) journals. Faculty were asked to rate a list of eighty-nine LIS journals on a scale from 1 to 5 based on each journal's importance to their research and teaching. Mean and mode calculations were used to rank results. Additionally, LIS faculty were asked to list the five most prestigious journals to be published in for tenure and promotion purposes at their institution. Several journals were rated highly by each method. LIS faculty ratings of LIS journals are useful for assessing journal quality not only for decisions regarding collection management but for tenure and promotion as well. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Stephen Krashen believes that schools can counter the effects of poverty in at least one area: access to books. However, little research has been done to determine whether students living in poverty have access to school library services comparable to those attending schools with low concentrations of students living in poverty. We examined the school library access gap; namely, the differences in school library characteristics (staffing, books added to collection, schedule, and number of days closed) in schools with various concentrations of students living in poverty. Alarmingly, we found that the students in most need--those attending schools with the highest concentrations of students living in poverty--had the fewest school library resources to draw on. Findings suggest that if we hope to close achievement gaps between high and low socioeconomic groups, we must attend to the access gap in school libraries in high- and low-poverty schools. As library collections increasingly become digital, libraries are faced with many challenges regarding the acquisition and management of electronic resources. Some of these challenges include copyright and fair use, the first-sale doctrine, licensing versus ownership, digital preservation, long-term archiving, and, most important, the issue of rising cost. How can public libraries continue to justify the rising cost of acquiring and maintaining digital resources? Can use justify cost? In this article, we report on a case study that describes a public library approach to the acquisition and management of digital resources. The Tulsa City-County Library has established a special committee to evaluate electronic resources and make decisions regarding existing and potential resources. The article focuses on the collection management in the library system. The purpose of the article is to highlight the leadership in formulating the concepts that underlay the evolution from book selection into collection building and subsequently, into collection development and collection management during the past seventy-five years. Collection development is a part of collection management that primarily has to do with decisions leading to both the acquisition of tangible sources of information and the leasing of intangible sources.

Prior to 1997, the University of Oxford in Great Britain had approximately one hundred autonomous libraries with little coordination of services, collection development, or management among them. In that year a new director was hired with the mandate to integrate many of these libraries into one centralized system. Over the past seven years Oxford's libraries have been reorganized; the restructuring has consolidated a number of previously independent libraries and changed the way library service is provided at Oxford. This longitudinal case study is based on visits to the libraries, interviews with participants, and examination of relevant print and electronic resources. In 2012, Glenstone began searching for information management systems for the library, archives, and museum collections. After evaluating different proprietary products designed for individual departmental needs, Glenstone decided to adopt CollectiveAccess, a customizable open-source system designed to be interoperable across departments. By creating linked relationships between record entities, CollectiveAccess formed a seamless, integrated discovery platform for users. This article presents the librarian's role and responsibilities in collaborating with the database development team, Whirl-i-Gig, and internal Glenstone departments to prepare for the museum's innovative and unique information services platform. Book art collections are often hidden, and browsing catalogs for artists' books can be frustrating to researchers due to cataloging inconsistencies. Artists' Books DC is a regional solution to these problems. This grant-funded digital reference tool serves as a comprehensive guide to researching artists' book collections in the Washington, DC, area. The author describes the process of building, funding, and publicizing this resource, and provides suggestions for producing effective digital reference tools, creating social media campaigns, and transforming the research process. In an effort to promote a heightened awareness of building materials and their role in the design process, California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly) has developed a materials collection for use by its faculty, students, and practicing architects. The collection is comprised of two linked and complementary entities--physical samples of building products and a custom online database--intended to foster the discovery, integration, and application of materials. The project was conceived and created by a diverse team from the College of Architecture and Environmental Design (CAED), the campus library, and the college media resource center. This article describes the following aspects of the project: the rationale behind, inspiration for, and educational objectives of the materials collection; the history of materials collections; and the creation, challenges, and next steps for the materials collection at Cal Poly. Academic library collections have largely reflected the dominance of text for teaching and scholarship, though our culture is increasingly visual. The authors developed a survey to answer questions about the demand for images in academic libraries and how librarians are adapting services and collections to a more visual culture. The survey was distributed to nine electronic mailing lists related to academic librarianship, resulting in 225 unique responses from diverse institutions. Survey responses indicate librarians embrace images and are finding creative ways to access both individual images and collections, though aspects of visual resources pose challenges.
