The proposed relationship between altruism and social work is a provocative, but flawed, thesis. Analysis of the social service profession reveals that social work practitioners engage in it for professional and social recognition, rather than for altruistic reasons. Further conceptual analysis suggests that desire for social control, rather than altruism, accounts for the existence of the social service profession. Other arguments against Wakefield's thesis are made based on issues of gender and human nature.

The article examines the emergence of Black Power groups in Montreal, Quebec, in the late 1960s and their connections and solidarity with Black Power leaders and groups in the Caribbean and the U.S. The issues that dominated Black Power organizations in Canada were generated by the distinctive circumstances and conditions facing African-descended people in the country, such as the attack on and subsequent burning of the computer center at Sir George Williams University while it was being occupied by black student protesters. The transnational dimensions of the Black Power Movement and distinctive contributions of African Canadians to the black radical tradition are discussed.

The article presents information on the session "Setting a Trap for a Gopher…and WAIS of Making WWWebs," presented during the 23rd conference of the Art Libraries Society of North America held in Québec on March 13, 1995. The topic of World Wide Web was introduced by moderator Hinda Sklar and the panel of participants. Deirdre Stam explained her responsibilities as director of the Gopher and World Wide Web at Syracuse University in New York.

This article focuses on a joint session presented by the Committee on Electronic Information of the College Art Association (CAA) and the Art Libraries Society which discussed art information databases during the annual meeting of the CAA on February 14, 1992. First topic on the agenda addressed the theoretical aspects of the who, what and why of such projects. The next topic described the elaborate planning required to create software to retrieve images and information from a videodisc of objects in the Stanley Collection of African Art.

This article previews the 20th conference of the Art Libraries Society (ARLIS) held at the Chicago Hilton and Towers in Chicago, Illinois from February 6 to 13, 1992. In spite of travel budget problems, more than 450 registrants arrived to take advantage of over 17 sessions, four workshops, four Ask ARLIS sessions, an open forum and a growing number of regular business meetings.
