Abstract

A literary criticism is presented of the French late 18th century occult novel "Le Diable amoureux," by Jacques Cazotte. Particular focus is given to the depiction of the supernatural within the novel, including wailing, the casting of spells, haunting voices, chanting and spirit invocations. An overview of the book's portrayal of demonic possession is provided.
