Muriel Rukeyser's 'The Book of the Dead', is an extraordinary epic poem of the 1930s but not much attention was paid to it because of male-centered notions of the modern American epic. However, Rukeyser successfully reworks epic conventions to compose a narrative of national redemption in which women and others marginalized in the dominant tradition of 'American epic' becomes shapers of myth and history.
