This paper focuses on alternative options regarding the often highly time-consuming treatments to overpaint removal from wooden polychrome objects used in Lithuanian conservation practice. It aims to highlight the variety of approaches used throughout the European region. Based on the case study analysis, the four types of approaches that have been identified throughout the European region are mechanical, solvent, biological, and physical. The four methods found in Lithuanian conservation practice are mechanical ablation with a scalpel, organic solvent-soaked compress action followed by scalpel ablation, organic solvent-soaked swab action, and application of commercial paint strippers (commercial organogels). Five more methods that are used abroad employ self-modelled organogels, hydrogels, enzymes, heat, and laser radiation. The further analysis helped determine twelve removal systems based on the methods mentioned above. These are illustrated in the flowchart, providing information on each process step by step, which can serve as an aid when designing a case-specific approach. This paper presents the architectural heritage research problems and methods in Interwar Vilnius. Due to institutional regulation as well as state law recommendation, architectural heritage research had to be performed before any maintenance (conservation, restoration or adaptation) works, however the quantity and quality of investigations differ from general cognition (general knowledge of an object's constructions, architectural details and condition) and inventory made (survey drawings) and analysis of non-intrusive research methods to complex scientific research. The comparative analysis of institutional impact for the investigation and individual practices of researchers reveal much wider contexts of the architectural heritage investigations questions and methods used in Interwar Vilnius. The paper examines the fundamentals of Alois Riegl's theory of heritage preservation with the primary focus on the so-called "cult of monuments" and the notion of monumental values, and foregrounds the significance of the latter notion for the further thought on heritage preservation. It places the conception of the values of a monument in the context of the author's theory of art and analyses its philosophical premises. For highlighting these premises, the analysis deploys contemporaneous philosophical ideas, such as those by Friedrich Nietzsche, Wilhelm Dilthey, Georg Siemel, and Max Weber. The durability of art works largely depends on such factors as the quality of the materials used, the techniques and materials used in its creation, and storage conditions. The art works by Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis are in need of restoration firstly because of the poor paper on which the artists painted and poor storage conditions that his paintings were for a long time kept in. A meeting took place at the M. K. Čiurlionis National Art Museum 1971 during which a decision was made to immediately initiate the restoration of the artist’s works. From that time on the Pranas Gudynas Centre of Graphic Restoration of the Lithuanian Art Museum restored more than 250 art works of Čiurlionis. For the occasion of the opening of the National Art Gallery in Vilnius in 2009, Čiurlionis’ paintings The City III and Andante, the second part of the Sonata of the Pyramids, were restored. This article describes the condition of those paintings before their restoration and the results of technological investigation. It also describes the restoration processes that were carried out. After restoration, the beauty of The City and the Andante paintings revealed itself. The restoration materials used and the methods applied stabilized the aging process of the paper. Moreover, the thorough technological investigation of the work that was conducted during this process complemented the existing database of technological data of M. K. Čiurlionis’ works. The paper presents an overview of the most relevant and interesting examples of mural painting in secular buildings in Slovenia and a selection of recently conserved-restored mural paintings in secular buildings with an emphasis on applied materials, techniques and conceptions. Some specific issues concerning the conservation and renovation of secular buildings in Slovenia in relation to the preserved paintings are stressed, and the common problems faced by conservators-restorers are discussed. In this paper conservation-restoration works on wall paintings discovered in SNG Opera and Ballet Theatre in Ljubljana will be presented, focusing on the project preparation and preliminary research of the materials found in the original murals. The restoration methodology was determined according to the results of several researches. Technological procedures used for restoring wall paintings in oil with playful grotesque motifs and painted wall marmorino in the technique of stucco-lustro are the central point of restoration interventions.
