This paper deals with the automation of digital trace data segmentation. The data are obtained from a digitizing tablet and are then subjected to handwriting analysis, providing quantified information about a person’s handwriting, which might help in the diagnosis of handwriting difficulties. In order to successfully analyze the data, they must be segmented by individual handwriting exercise. Implementation of a python-based program with a GUI is described along with its basic functionality.

The prevalence of handwriting difficulties among school-aged children is around 10 – 30 %. Until now, there is no objective method to diagnose and rate developmental dysgraphia (DD) in Czech Republic. The goal of this study is to propose a new method of objective DD diagnosis based on quantitative analysis of online handwriting. For this purpose, we extracted a set of spatial, temporal, kinematic and dynamic features from three handwriting tasks. Consequently, we performed a correlation analysis between these features and score of handwriting proficiency screening questionaire (HPSQ), in order to identify parameters with a good discrimination power. Using random forests classifier in combination with quantification of alphabet writing task, we reached nearly 77% classification accuracy (75% sensitivity, 80% specificity). This pilot study proves the possibility of automatic DD diagnosis in children cohort writing with cursive letters.

This paper introduces a new methodology of kinematic features calculation based on fractional derivatives applied on PD handwriting. Discrimination power of basic kinematic features (velocity, acceleration, jerk) was evaluated by classification analysis (using support vector machines and random forests). For this purpose, 37 PD patients and 38 healthy controls were enrolled. In comparison to results reported in other works, we proved that FDE in online handwriting analysis brings promising improvements. The best result of multivariate analysis was achieved with 83:89% classification accuracy in combination with 5 features using only one handwriting task (overlapped circles). This study reveals an impact of fractional derivatives based features in analysis of Parkinsonic dysgraphia.
