Fine-scale tracking of animal movement is important to understand the proximate mechanisms of animal behaviour. The reverse-GPS system—ATLAS—uses inexpensive (~€25), lightweight ( Here, we test the accuracy and precision of the largest ATLAS system, located in the Dutch Wadden Sea, using concurrent GPS measurements as a reference. This large-scale ATLAS system consists of 26 receivers and covers 1,326 km2 of intertidal region, with almost no physical obstacles for radio signals, providing a useful baseline for other systems. We compared ATLAS and GPS location estimates for a route (mobile test) and 16 fixed locations (stationary test) on the Griend mudflat. Precision was estimated using standard deviation during thestationary tests. We also give examples of tracked red knots Calidris canutus islandica to illustrate the use of the system in tracking small shorebirds (~120 g). ATLAS-derived location estimates differed from GPS by a median of 4.2 m (stationary test) and 5.7 m (mobile test). Signals that were collected by more receiver stations were more accurate, although even three-receiver localisations were comparable with GPS localisations (~10 m difference). Receivers that detected 90% of the 1 Hz transmissions from our test tag were within 5 km of their furthest detection but height of both receiver and tag seemed to influence detection distance. The test tag (1 Hz) had a fix rate of >90% at 15 of 16 stationary sites. Tags on birds (1/6 Hz) on the Griend mudflat had a mean fix rate of 51%, yielding an average sampling rate of 0.085 Hz. Fix rates were higher in more central parts of the receiver array. ATLAS provides accurate, regional-scale tracking with which hundreds of relatively small-bodied species can be tracked simultaneously for long periods of time. Future ATLAS users should consider the height of receivers, their spatial arrangement, density and the movement modes of their study species (e.g. ground-dwelling or flying).

Cognitive biases for encoding spatial information (orientation strategies) in relation to self (egocentric) or landmarks (allocentric) differ between species or populations according to the habitats they occupy. Whether biases in orientation strategy determine early habitat selection or if individuals adapt their biases following experience is unknown. We determined orientation strategies of pheasants, Phasianus colchicus, using a dual-strategy maze with an allocentric probe trial, before releasing them (n = 20) into a novel landscape, where we monitored their movement and habitat selection. In general, pheasants selected for woodland over non-woodland habitat, but allocentric-biased individuals exhibited weaker avoidance of non-woodland habitat, where we expected allocentric navigation to be more effective. Sex did not influence selection but was associated with speed and directional persistence in non-woodland habitat. Our results suggest that an individual's habitat selection is associated with inherent cognitive bias in early life, but it is not yet clear what advantages this may offer.

Social environments influence important ecological processes and can determine how selection acts on traits. Cognitive abilities can shape these social environments and in turn, affect individuals' fitness. To understand how cognitive abilities evolve, we need to understand the complex interplay between an individual's cognitive abilities, the social environment that they inhabit and the fitness consequences of these relationships. We measured the associative learning ability of pheasant chicks, Phasianus colchicus, then released them into the wild where we quantified their social position by observing their associations at feeding stations and monitored the number of days survived. We observed disassortative mixing by learning performance at the population level, and poor learners had more associates than good learners. Learning was beneficial for survival when focal individuals had fewer than four associates, but survival probability across learning abilities equalized for individuals with more than four associates. While the mechanisms underlying these relationships remain to be determined, the patterns of association exhibited by pheasants at feeders can be predicted by individual variation in cognitive performances and we suspect these patterns are related to differences in information use. Critically, these resulting patterns of association have fitness consequences for individuals that cannot be explained directly by their cognitive ability, but which could mediate selection on cognition.

The ability to communicate is fundamental to life as we know it and the key to success in many cases is based on having good communication skills. Be it written, spoken, visual, auditory or otherwise, effective communication can open many doors to hidden knowledge that can benefit the world. Science as an entity, which itself stems from the Latin word Scientia, (Engl. "knowledge"), has a tradition of not being particularly well communicated, with long words, vast and confusing concepts, and information overloads. However, as good as communication between scientists has generally become, there is still room for improvement. This article hopes to inform and inspire scientists to lead by example, to educate and advise in the best ways that we can, not just for non-experts, but for the interest of everyone.

Sexual segregation is common and can occur when sexes occupy different habitats, and/or when sexes aggregate assortatively within the same habitats. However, it is rarely studied in birds, with most previous work concentrating on differential settlement by the sexes in discrete habitats, often separated by large distances. Little attention has been paid to patterns of segregation within the same site. We reared 200 Common Pheasants Phasianus colchicus and released them onto a relatively small site of 250 ha and recorded their patterns of association and differential use of artificial feeders in space and time. Particular feeders were preferred by one sex, although we found no features of the local habitat which explained such preferences. Furthermore, we found sex differences in the use of feeders throughout the day, with females preferentially visiting them in the morning and the proportion of females visiting feeders increasing as the year progressed. Social network analyses found that in the first month after release into the wild, females did not associate strongly with other females, which was surprising as, prior to release, females have been shown to associate with other females in both semi‐natural conditions and when tested in isolation. However, sexual segregation was clearly seen after 1 month of being released and became more pronounced as the year progressed. Females associated with other females from November to February, whereas males avoided other males over this same period. Sexes became less likely to associate with one another in 5 of the 6 months monitored. Such avoidance observed in males suggests that they start to form territories much sooner than previously thought. Pheasants exhibit clear patterns of fine‐scale sexual segregation based on space and time, which was observed in their social preferences at feeding sites. Such detailed fine‐scale segregation is rarely observed in birds.

OBJECTIVES To compare treatment preference, efficacy, and tolerability of sildenafil citrate (sildenafil) and tadalafil for treating erectile dysfunction (ED) in men naive to phosphodiesterase 5 (PDE5) inhibitor therapy. PATIENTS AND METHODS This was an open-label, crossover study of sildenafil and tadalafil (taken as needed). After a 4-week baseline assessment, 367 men with ED (mean age 54 years) were randomized to receive sildenafil for 12 weeks followed by tadalafil for 12 weeks or vice versa (8-week dose optimization and 4-week assessment phases). During dose optimization, patients started taking 25- or 50-mg sildenafil or 10-mg tadalafil and could titrate to find their optimum dose (25-, 50- or 100-mg sildenafil; 10- or 20-mg tadalafil). After completing both 12-week periods, patients chose which treatment to continue during an 8-week extension. Efficacy was measured with the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) and Sexual Encounter Profile (SEP) diary. RESULTS Of the 291 men who completed both treatments, 85 (29%) chose sildenafil and 206 (71%) chose tadalafil (P < 0.001) for the 8-week extension. The IIEF erectile function domain scores were 14.2 at baseline, 23.9 at endpoint on sildenafil, and 24.3 at endpoint on tadalafil (P = 0.08, sildenafil vs tadalafil). The mean per patient percentage success scores for SEP2 (penetration) were: baseline (46%), sildenafil (post-baseline 82%) and tadalafil (post-baseline 85%; P = 0.06, sildenafil vs tadalafil), and for SEP3 (successful intercourse) were: baseline (19%), sildenafil (post-baseline 72%), and tadalafil (post-baseline 77%; P = 0.003, sildenafil vs tadalafil). The only treatment-emergent adverse events that were reported by > 5% of men were headache and flushing. CONCLUSIONS In men with ED who were naive to PDE5 inhibitor therapy, sildenafil and tadalafil were both effective and well tolerated. After treatment with sildenafil and tadalafil, 29% of men chose sildenafil and 71% chose tadalafil for ED therapy during an 8-week extension.

Objectives Financial stress has been identified as a barrier to antiretroviral adherence, but only in resource- limited settings. Almost half of HIV-infected Australian adults earn no regular income and, despite highly subsidised antiretroviral therapy and universal health care, 3% of HIV-infected Australians cease antiretroviral therapy each year. We studied the relationship between financial stress and treatment adherence in a resource-rich setting. Methods Out-patients attending the HIV clinic at St Vincent's Hospital between November 2010 and May 2011 were invited to complete an anonymous survey including questions relating to costs and adherence. Results Of 335 HIV-infected patients (95.8% male; mean age 52 years; hepatitis coinfection 9.2%), 65 patients (19.6%) stated that it was difficult or very difficult to meet pharmacy dispensing costs, 49 (14.6%) reported that they had delayed purchasing medication because of pharmacy costs, and 30 (9.0%) reported that they had ceased medication because of pharmacy costs. OBJECTIVE To assess the maintenance of efficacy of duloxetine beyond 3 months, using data from several long-term, open-label studies, as the efficacy of duloxetine 40-mg twice daily for treating women with stress urinary incontinence (SUI) for up to 3 months has been established in several randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trials. PATIENTS AND METHODS Data from 1424 patients (Cohort A) enrolled in three 12-week, placebo-controlled clinical trials and their uncontrolled, open-label extensions, and in one uncontrolled, open-label study, were used to assess long-term continuation rates and continued efficacy based on responses to the validated Patient Global Impression of Improvement (PGI-I) scale for up to 30 months. Data from another 2758 patients (Cohort B) enrolled in an additional placebo-controlled study and its open-label extension were used to assess PGI-I ratings, reductions in incontinence episode frequency (IEF) recorded on urinary diaries, and the relationship between PGI-I ratings and reductions in IEF for up to 72 weeks. RESULTS In Cohort A, the duloxetine continuation rate at 1 year was 42.5%. At 12, 24 and 30 months, most (83%, 83% and 88%, respectively) patients in Cohort A who continued treatment rated their incontinence in one of the three ‘better since starting treatment’ PGI-I categories. Both the median IEF reductions (50–77%) and the PGI-I ‘better’ ratings (70–88% of patients) remained fairly consistent over 72 weeks in Cohort B. Finally, IEF reductions increased with increasing PGI-I ratings (≈46% for ‘a little better’, 75% for ‘much better’ and 95% for ‘very much better’) over the first year of treatment. CONCLUSION The benefits of duloxetine were maintained in patients who continued treatment for up to 30 months. However, these favourable results need to be interpreted cautiously, as many patients discontinued treatment and those with better responses are more likely to continue taking medication.

To evaluate, in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, multicentre trial, the safety and efficacy of on-demand tadalafil (an oral phosphodiesterase type-5 inhibitor approved in many countries for treating erectile dysfunction, ED) in a Western European population of men with mild-to-severe ED.Patients were randomized according to baseline severity of ED in a ratio of 3 : 1 to receive either tadalafil 20 mg or placebo for 12 weeks. Primary efficacy endpoints were mean changes from baseline to endpoint (12 weeks) in the erectile function (EF) domain of the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) and percentages of 'Yes' responses to Sexual Encounter Profile (SEP) diary Question 2 ('Were you able to insert your penis into your partner's vagina?') and Question 3 ('Did your erection last long enough for you to have successful intercourse?'). Secondary endpoints included mean changes from baseline to endpoint in IIEF Intercourse Satisfaction and Overall Satisfaction domains, selected questions of the IIEF, and the percentage of 'Yes' responses to Global Assessment Questions (GAQ) at the last visit. Other analyses included the percentage of patients in each treatment group at endpoint with IIEF EF domain scores in the normal range (26), the frequency of intercourse attempts and mean per-patient intercourse success rate at various times after dosing.The mean age of the patients was 53 years and 80% had a history of ED ofor = 1 year. The mean baseline EF domain score was 13.5, with 40.5% of patients in the severe category. Tadalafil improved mean EF domain scores by 11.1, vs 0.4 for placebo (P0.001). In addition, 73.9% of sexual intercourse attempts were successful (SEP-Q3) in tadalafil-treated patients, compared with 29.9% in placebo-treated patients during the period after baseline (P0.001). Tadalafil significantly improved the mean IIEF intercourse satisfaction (5.1, tadalafil; 1.1, placebo) and overall satisfaction domain scores (3.9, tadalafil; 0.5, placebo), P0.001. GAQs used to assess the overall effect of the treatment indicated that tadalafil was superior to placebo (P0.001) in improving erections (82.1%, tadalafil; 23.1%, placebo) and sexual activity (78.6% and 17.3%). The most common treatment-emergent adverse events more frequent (2%) with tadalafil than placebo were headache, dyspepsia, flushing, back pain, pain in limb and myalgia. These adverse events were mostly mild to moderate.Tadalafil improved erectile function and was well tolerated when taken by men from Western Europe with mild-to-severe ED.

Steroids are widely dispersed throughout the biosphere where they fulfil a plethora of roles as bioregulators in both plants and animals. Indeed the simplest organism yet discovered to be utilizing them is a water mold which deploys a pheromone, oogoniol, which is a steroid. Within the animal kingdom, true hormonal use of the oestrogens appears to be restricted to the phyla Arthropoda and Chordata whereas their elaboration appears to have originated as early as ≈400 million years ago with the phyla Mollusca and Echinodermata which developed the cytochrome P450arom necessary to convert androstenedione to oestrone and testosterone to oestradiol. Until relatively recently it was assumed that, in the human, the endocrine oestrogens were largely if not exclusively involved in reproductive physiology. They were known to be responsible, with other agents, for the complex signalling and signal transduction which prepares the female organism for the key events of ovulation, blastocyst implantation, maternal adaptation to pregnancy and lactation—all of which, being central to the survival of the species, are highly conserved. However, the last half century has seen a major expansion in our understanding of the range of oestrogenic activity in physiology. The physico-chemical characteristics of the oestrogens and their receptors provide a signal and signal transduction system of high utility which has found a role in many systems unrelated to reproduction.

This article, in exploring the processes by which employers’ generalised demand for labour is translated into actual recruitment, highlights the role of management decision-making in this important, but relatively neglected area.

This article focuses upon internal labour market processes and reviews current theoretical and empirical material. In reporting two recent studies which indicate the variety of internal processes the authors offer some explanations for such developments, in particular their relevance to issues of managerial control.
