Abstract Objective To find an adequate cut‐off point for beta trace protein (β‐TP) in nasal secretion (NS) and validate this diagnostic test with a large sample of patients. Likewise, we evaluated β‐TP test efficacy to confirm the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leakage closure after treatment. Methods We performed a retrospective analysis with 207 samples from 162 patients with suspected CSF leakage received in the Hospital Universitario Virgen de la Arrixaca between 2010 and 2016. Twenty‐five samples were included in the control group. Samples were obtained from NS through a swab to determine β‐TP using a nephelometry‐based assay. Sensitivity, specificity, and area under the curve (AUC) for β‐TP in NS were assessed using the receiver operator characteristic (ROC) analysis. Results Using imaging techniques, the diagnosis of CSF leak was confirmed in 57 patients (35.19%), while 105 had a negative diagnosis (64.81%). Abstract Background Listeriosis is a severe foodborne infection caused by Listeria monocytogenes, an important foodborne pathogen of animals and humans. Listeriosis is a rare disease in cats. Objective To describe the clinical, diagnostic imaging, histological, and microbiological features of L. monocytogenes‐associated mesenteric lymphadenitis in a cat. Animals Listeria monocytogenes‐associated mesenteric lymphadenitis was confirmed in a cat by histology and microbiology. Results Two distinct isolates of L. monocytogenes were cultured from the affected mesenteric lymph node and whole genome sequencing was performed. Conclusion and Clinical Importance This report should alert veterinary clinicians and microbiologists to the syndrome, which may have implications for health and food safety in animals and humans.

Abstract Sea lamprey Petromyzon marinus is an anadromous and semelparous fish without homing behaviors. Despite being a freshwater, free‐living organism for a large part of their life cycle, its adulthood is spent as a parasite of marine vertebrates. In their native European range, while it is well‐established that sea lampreys comprise a single nearly‐panmictic population, few studies have further explored the evolutionary history of natural populations. Here, we performed the first genome‐wide characterization of sea lamprey's genetic diversity in their European natural range. The objectives were to investigate the connectivity among river basins and explore evolutionary processes mediating dispersal during the marine phase, with the sequencing of 186 individuals from 8 locations spanning the North Eastern Atlantic coast and the North Sea with double‐digest RAD‐sequencing, obtaining a total of 30,910 bi‐allelic SNPs. Population genetic analyses reinforced the existence of a single metapopulation encompassing freshwater spawning sites within the North Eastern Atlantic and the North Sea, though the prevalence of private alleles at northern latitudes suggested some limits to the species' dispersal. Seascape genomics suggested a scenario where oxygen concentration and river runoffs impose spatially varying selection across their distribution range. Exploring associations with the abundance of potential hosts further suggested that hake and cod could also impose selective pressures, although the nature of such putative biotic interactions was unresolved. Overall, the identification of adaptive seascapes in a panmictic anadromous species could contribute to conservation practices by providing information for restoration activities to mitigate local extinctions on freshwater sites.

Abstract This study is devoted to characterizing the operation of the entire photovoltaic system installed in one of the Auger Muons and Infill for the Ground Array (AMIGA) stations, a complimentary detector for the Pierre Auger Observatory, the largest cosmic‐ray air shower array in the world, 3000 km2, powered exclusively by solar energy. To understand charge and discharge cycles, the whole system behavior under different climatic conditions and to determine its limitations, the design of a new prototype for monitoring the whole system online is a fundamental part of this contribution. Also, it is demonstrated that the configuration of solar charge controllers in parallel is able to manage panels of different powers and brands and that the monitoring system allows analyzing periods with adverse weather conditions.

Background: Management of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection requires co-treatment with proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) and the use of antibiotics to achieve successful eradication., Aim: To evaluate the role of dosage of PPIs and the duration of therapy in the effectiveness of H. pylori eradication treatments based on the 'European Registry on Helicobacter pylori management' (Hp-EuReg)., Methods: Hp-EuReg is a multicentre, prospective, non-interventionist, international registry on the routine clinical practice of H. pylori management by European gastroenterologists. All infected adult patients were systematically registered from 2013 to 2022., Results: Overall, 36,579 patients from five countries with more than 1000 patients were analysed. Optimal (≥90%) first-line-modified intention-to-treat effectiveness was achieved with the following treatments: (1) 14-day therapies with clarithromycin-amoxicillin-bismuth and metronidazole-tetracycline-bismuth, both independently of the PPI dose prescribed; (2) All 10-day (except 10-day standard triple therapy) and 14-day therapies with high-dose PPIs; and (3) 10-day quadruple therapies with clarithromycin-amoxicillin-bismuth, metronidazole-tetracycline-bismuth, and clarithromycin-amoxicillin-metronidazole (sequential), all with standard-dose PPIs. In first-line treatment, optimal effectiveness was obtained with high-dose PPIs in all 14-day treatments, in 10- and 14-day bismuth quadruple therapies and in 10-day sequential with standard-dose PPIs. Optimal second-line effectiveness was achieved with (1) metronidazole-tetracycline-bismuth quadruple therapy for 14- and 10 days with standard and high-dose PPIs, respectively; and (2) levofloxacin-amoxicillin triple therapy for 14 days with high-dose PPIs. None of the 7-day therapies in both treatment lines achieved optimal effectiveness., Conclusions: We recommend, in first-line treatment, the use of high-dose PPIs in 14-day triple therapy and in 10-or 14-day quadruple concomitant therapy in first-line treatment, while standard-dose PPIs would be sufficient in 10-day bismuth quadruple therapies. On the other hand, in second-line treatment, high-dose PPIs would be more beneficial in 14-day triple therapy with levofloxacin and amoxicillin or in 10-day bismuth quadruple therapy either as a three-in-one single capsule or in the traditional scheme., (© 2023 The Authors. Patients with CSF leakage had significantly higher β-TP values in NS (16.07 ± 16.94 mg/L, p  < .001) than the control group (0.33 ± 0.12 mg/L) and patients without CSF leakage (0.61 ± 2.34 mg/L). Applying a 1 mg/L cut-off point resulted in 96.5% sensitivity and 97.1% specificity. Positive and negative predictive values (PPV and NPV) at this cut-off were 94.9% and 98.6%, respectively. Finally, this cut-off point yields a test efficacy for CSF leak diagnosis of 97% (95% CI 92.9-98.9)., Conclusion: Our study has established a 1 mg/L β-TP concentration in NS as a cut-off point for CSF leakage diagnosis with high sensibility and specificity.
