Purpose To date there has not been an extensive analysis of the outcomes of biomarker use in oncology. Methods Data were pooled across four indications in oncology drawing upon trial outcomes from www.clinicaltrials.gov: breast cancer, non‐small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), melanoma and colorectal cancer from 1998 to 2017. We compared the likelihood drugs would progress through the stages of clinical trial testing to approval based on biomarker status. This was done with multi‐state Markov models, tools that describe the stochastic process in which subjects move among a finite number of states. Results Over 10000 trials were screened, which yielded 745 drugs. The inclusion of biomarker status as a covariate significantly improved the fit of the Markov model in describing the drug trajectories through clinical trial testing stages. Hazard ratios based on the Markov models revealed the likelihood of drug approval with biomarkers having nearly a fivefold increase for all indications combined. A 12, 8 and 7‐fold hazard ratio was observed for breast cancer, melanoma and NSCLC, respectively. Markov models with exploratory biomarkers outperformed Markov models with no biomarkers. Conclusion This is the first systematic statistical evidence that biomarkers clearly increase clinical trial success rates in three different indications in oncology. Also, exploratory biomarkers, long before they are properly validated, appear to improve success rates in oncology. This supports early and aggressive adoption of biomarkers in oncology clinical trials., We reviewed clinical trial success rates in 4 cancers: breast cancer, melanoma, colorectal and lung cancer. We examined the effect of biomarker use on the risk of clinical trial failure. We found that biomarker use best accounted for clinical trial success rates and provides the first extensive statistical analysis to support its use in clinical trial design.

Introduction The aim of the present study was to determine the prevalence of somatization, anxiety, depression and stress in a primary care population, explore their association to psychosocial stressors and determine the diagnostic overlap of these four mental disorders. Methods This is a prospective cross-sectional study. A representative sample of 2,150 patients was approached, of whom 1,762 patients agreed to participate and responded to the questionnaire (81.9%). Anxiety was assessed with the Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale (GAD-7). Depression was assessed with the depression module Patients Health Questionnaire-8. Somatization was measured with the somatic symptom module PHQ-15. The Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) instrument was used to identify the stress cases. Results Of the study sample, 23.8% of the total cases were identified as probable cases. The prevalence of somatization, depression, anxiety and stress was 11.7%, 11.3%, 8.3% and 18.6%, respectively. The specific gender prevalence of these four psychological disorders was very similar in men and women: depression (11.3% versus 11.3%), anxiety (7.7% versus 8.9%), somatization (12.5% versus 10.7%) and stress disorders (19.3% versus 17.8%). In this paper, the pricing and the transmission power control processes are investigated in a cognitive radio network. In the given network, there are multiple primary service providers (PSPs) which have some amount of unutilised bandwidth, and multiple secondary users (SUs) that require spectrum bands. SUs are assumed to pay the PSPs for short-term usage of their available spectrum bands; which is referred as the spectrum trading. In this multiple-seller and multiple-buyer environment, the proposed framework aims at determining the optimum price values for unit spectrum bands that maximises PSPs profits while protecting the social welfare of their network. Furthermore, the framework considers the power control, especially the effect of transmission power on the profit of PSPs. An effective power management component faces several challenges, such as low power emission and high level of quality of service. A new network element, called Telecommunication Coordinating Authority (TCA), is introduced in the proposed model. The TCA has the responsibility to control the satisfaction of all users in the PSPs' networks by simultaneously limiting interference and maximising cognitive capacity. The pricing process is based on a non-cooperative game, where the PSPs are the players. Simulation results show that the proposed framework allow PSPs to make up to 45-86% of additional profit while preserving the social welfare of the network. An imidazole type ionic liquid (IL), 1-hexadecyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (I16IL) was used as a template in the preparation of mesoporous silica with incorporated titanium dioxide. In this process, the IL is the structural template as well as the source of the Ti. The steps leading to the formation of the nanocrystalline metal oxide include: a) formation of metal-containing IL (M-IL); b) using the M-IL as a template for the mesoporous silica; c) calcination of the sample to remove the organic moiety, while leaving the metal centers to form oxides on the porous framework. By varying the TiO2–SiO2 calcination temperature, the particle size and phase of TiO2 have been studied. These TiO2–SiO2 hybrid materials were characterized by using various physicochemical techniques, such as UV/Vis diffuse-reflectance spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, N2 adsorption-desorption isotherm measurement, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The resultant hybrid silica demonstrated effective photocatalytic activity for the oxidation of cyclohexene and styrene.

The aim of the study was to determine whether consanguineous marriages result in reproductive wastage and an increased incidence of illness in the offspring in a community with a long history of inbreeding and an expected high rate of consanguineous marriage. A representative sample of 2200 women aged > or = 15 years from Dubai and Al Ain, two cities in the United Arab Emirates, representing on the one hand a modern metropolis and on the other a traditional society, were studied. A questionnaire, which included questions on age, parity, gravidity, number of stillbirths, number of abortions, number of children alive, neonatal deaths and specific illnesses in children, was administered by nurses in antenatal and gynaecological clinics in the two cities. The rate of consanguineous marriage was 50.5% and parity, gravidity, ages and number of children were similar in consanguineous and non-consanguineous groups. There was no significant difference in rates of abortion, stillbirth and neonatal death between the two groups. Overall, there was statistically significant higher reproductive wastage in consanguineous couples, but when the category of less than second cousins was excluded from the consanguineous group no difference was found in reproductive wastage between consanguineous and non-consanguineous marriages. Children born to consanguineous unions also had significantly higher incidences of illnesses (37.1%) than those of non-consanguineous unions (29%). The occurrence of malignancies, congenital abnormalities, mental retardation and physical handicap was significantly higher in offspring of consanguineous than non-consanguineous marriages. In conclusion, consanguinity did not result in reproductive wastage, but was found to be an important factor in the causation of specific illnesses in offspring.

Aim: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and predictors of osteoporosis and the impact of life style factors on bone mineral density (BMD) in premenopausal and postmenopausal Qatari women. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study. A total of 821 healthy Qatari women aged 20‐70 years had given consent and participated and the study was conducted from June 2005 to December 2006 at the Rumaillah Hospital, Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC), Doha, State of Qatar. All subjects completed a questionnaire on reproductive and life style factors. Height and weight were measured. All subjects underwent dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) to determine factors influencing BMD of the spine and femur. The main outcome measures were menopausal status, socio-demographic and lifestyle factors and BMD measurements. Results: The prevalence of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women was 12.3%. BMI was significantly higher among postmenopausal women (P < 0.001) when compared to premenopausal women. The subjects who regularly consumed dairy products had better BMD at spine, neck and ward sites (P < 0.05). Those doing regular household work for 3‐4 h a week had higher BMD at all sites compared to those who did not do their own household work. Multiple regression analysis showed that education level and body mass index were strong positive predictors showing high significance. Conclusion: The relation between lifestyle and BMD were explored in Qatari women. The prevalence of osteoporosis in Qatari women is comparable to other countries. BMD values were higher in women who were taking diary products regularly, and were involved with household work.

Qatar is a country in the Gulf area and member of the Gulf Cooperation Council states. The country is populated by original Qatari tribes that amount to about 200 000 people and about 600 000 expatriates mainly from Arabic and Asian countries. Inbreeding over centuries and high rates of consanguinity in the Qatari population and in some groups of expatriates, in addition to large family sizes and rapid population growth, have contributed to a high frequency of autosomal recessive disorders. In December 2003 Hamad Medical Corporation in Doha and the University Children’s Hospital of Heidelberg, Germany, started an extended state-wide neonatal screening programme for metabolic and endocrine disorders, with the laboratory situated in Heidelberg, Germany. All aspects of the screening process had to be adapted to the unique situation of the laboratory being 6000 km from the birthplace of the neonates. Within 32 months, samples of 25 214 neonates were screened. In 28 cases an endocrine or metabolic diagnosis was identified (incidence 1:901, in Germany 1:1728). In particular, a variety of monogenic metabolic diseases were prevalent, with 19 patients detected giving an incidence of metabolic diseases of 1:1327 (Germany 1:2517). Each euro spent on the screening programme saved more than 25 euros in health and social costs. The programme revealed a high incidence of treatable inborn metabolic diseases in the population of Qatar. A reliable screening for classical homocystinuria showing a unique incidence of >1:3000 and for sickle cell disease has now been added.

The aim of the study was to estimate the prevalence and sociodemographic predictors of consanguineous unions in the State of Qatar and to assess the association between consanguinity, fertility and child health. A representative sample of 1800 Qatari women aged > or =15 years was approached for the study. Of these, 1515 (84.2%) women agreed to participate. The consanguineous marriage rate was 54.0% with estimated population confidence limits of 52.3-55.7%. First cousin unions were the most common form of cousin marriage. The level of parental consanguinity (both in the respondent's parents and her parents-in-law) was quite high. In a multivariable analysis, both education of the respondent and her husband as well as parental consanguinity were found to be strong predictors of consanguineous unions in the index generation. Although fertility was high in both groups, the mean number of pregnancies was somewhat higher in respondents with first cousin unions. Concomitantly they also had a slighter higher rate of livebirths than women in non-consanguineous unions. The occurrence of asthma, mental retardation, epilepsy and diabetes was significantly more common in offspring of all consanguineous than non-consanguineous couples.

Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of low back pain (LBP) in a primary care setting population and examine its association with the symptoms of depression and somatization. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study, utilising a survey carried out in primary health care clinics (PHCs) in Al-Ain, United Arab Emirates (UAE). A multistage stratified sampling design was used and a representative sample of 1304 UAE nationals aged 18–65 years who attended PHC clinics for any reason were included and 1103 (84.5%) subjects agreed to participate and responded to the questionnaire during a period from June 2001 to January 2002. A specially designed questionnaire with three parts was used for the data collection: socio-demographic information of the studied subjects, modified version of the Roland-Morris scale for evaluating back-related functional disability and SCL-90 R for depression and somatization subscales was used to assess depressive and somatic symptoms. Results: Of the total number of subjects surveyed (1103), 586 (53.1%) were men and 517 (46.9%) women. The mean age was 34.9 ± 13.4 years for men and 33.5 ± 11.8 years for women. The prevalence of LBP in the studied subjects was 64.7% (95% CI, 60.7–68.5] with 46.7% among men and 53.3% among women. There were a significant differences between the subjects with LBP and without LBP with respect to gender (P < 0.001), body mass index (BMI) (P < 0.001), occupational status (P < 0.001) and living environment (P = 0.016). Functional disability was higher in patients with LBP. Young patients in aged 15–34 years, patients with preparatory/secondary educational level and students showed higher depressive symptoms. A similar pattern was found in patients with somatic symptoms. Factor analysis revealed a strong association between depression and somatization in LBP patients. Conclusions: Functional disability was higher in with LBP. Furthermore, symptoms of depression and somatization are prevalent among LBP patients. Wiley Online Library

BACKGROUND: The objective of the present study was to determine the prevalence pattern of Down Syndrome (DS) in children

The objective was to compare the outcomes of labor induction in women with a history of 1 cesarean section (CS) who undergo trial of labor. A prospective observational study of 702 pregnant women who had 1 previous CS was conducted at Womens Hospital Hamad Medical Corporation Doha Qatar between April 2003 and April 2004. Those with no history of vaginal delivery were assigned to one group and those with a history of vaginal delivery were assigned to another group and the latter group was then divided into 2 subgroups according to the results of trial of labor. Of these 702 women with a history of 1 CS 62.4% also had a history of vaginal delivery. After trial of labor vaginal delivery occurred more often among women with no history of vaginal delivery (64.8%). Moreover trial of labor resulted in a vaginal delivery more often in women who were delivered only once and by CS (87.7%) than in women who also had a history of vaginal delivery (79.2%). These findings indicate that women who have had a CS should strongly consider natural delivery for subsequent pregnancies. (authors)

Background: Epidemiological evidence suggests that obesity has effects on bone density. Obese subjects have increased bone density relative to non-obese subjects yet this relationship is not fully understood. However, the influence of these factors has not been well documented in Arabian Gulf women. Aim: The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between obesity and bone mineral density (BMD) as a risk factor for osteoporosis in premenopausal, menopausal and postmenopausal Qatari women. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study, performed during a period from September 2003 to October 2004. A total of 1000 women were targeted for the study, however, only 649 healthy Qatari women aged 20‐70 years had given consent and participated in this study. All subjects completed a questionnaire on reproductive and life style factors. Height and weight were measured. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) was used to determine Bone Mineral Density (BMD) of the spine and femur. The main outcome measures were menopausal status, socio-demographic, obesity and lifestyle factors and BMD measurements. Results: It is observed from our survey that 27.7% of the studied subjects had osteoporosis/osteopenia. Illiterate subjects were more likely to have low bone mineral density (35%). Walking daily for more than 30 minutes contributed to increase the BMD at spine and femur. Also, doing regular household work for 1‐2 h/day also contributed towards high BMD. Multiple regression analysis showed that obesity, educational level and taking multivitamin supplements were strong positive indicators for BMD at spinal sites and for femoral sites, BMD was higher among the obese subjects. Finally, the present study revealed that obesity is a protective factor for osteoporosis. Conclusion: The study concludes that in a population of Qatari women there is a positive association between obesity and BMD at both spinal and femoral sites. BMD at spine and femur sites were higher in obese group and than the non-obese group.

We seek to investigate the prevalence of LBP and associated risk factors among people living in the typically hot, humid desert environment of the UAE. Methods: A cross-sectional questionnaire survey was conducted. The setting was the Primary Health Care (PHC) Clinics in Al-Ain, UAE. The subjects were a multistage stratified sample of 1304 UAE nationals, 15–70 years of age, who attended PHC clinics for any reason. All subjects were invited to participate. The questionnaire used in the survey is a modified version of the Roland-Morris scale for evaluating low back pain. The questionnaires were administered during face-to-face interviews conducted in Arabic by qualified nurses. Results: Of the total 1304 subject, 1103 (84.5%) living in both urban and rural areas agreed to participate and responded to the study; 586 (53.1%) were men and 517 (46.9%) women. The mean ages and SD of the subjects were 34.9 ± 13.4 years for the men and 33.5 ± 11.8 years for the women. The prevalence of LBP in the present study was 64.6% (95% CI = 60.7–68.5). BACKGROUND Define the pattern and birth prevalence of the different types of osteochondrodysplasias in newborn infants in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) population, which is highly inbred and where termination of pregnancy is not accepted. METHODS All infants with a birth weight of 500 gm and above in the three hospitals in Al Ain Medical District of the UAE were studied prospectively over a period of 5 years. For each live birth or stillbirth with suspected skeletal dysplasia, a detailed clinical and radiological examination was carried out. Pregnancy history and information regarding parental age, ethnic origin, family history, and level of consanguinity were obtained and a pedigree was constructed. RESULTS Among the 38,048 births during the study period, 36 (9.46/10,000 births) had some type of skeletal dysplasia. Eighteen cases were attributed to autosomal recessive genes (4.7/10,000 births), 10 were due to apparent new dominant mutations (2.62/10,000), five were autosomal dominant type (1.3/10,000) and one was X-linked dominant type (0.26/10,000). In three cases, inheritance was unknown. The most common recessive type of skeletal dysplasia in our series was fibrochondrogenesis (1.05/10,000), followed by chondrodysplasia punctata (0.78/10,000). The birth prevalence rate of skeletal dysplasia doubled in the last 2 years of the 5-year observation period (6.74/10,000 in 1996 vs. 12.86/10,000 in 1999, and 13.45/10,000 in 2000). This increase involved cases caused by new dominant mutations, and occurred mainly in the first half of 1999. CONCLUSION This prospective study has identified a high birth prevalence of skeletal dysplasia, and risk factors are postulated. These findings represent an accurate birth prevalence figure and a useful baseline for this group of birth defects in the UAE. Background The mechanism of the teratogenicity of vigabatrin (VGB) is unknown. The objectives of this study were to determine the placental transfer of VGB and to evaluate the effect of VGB on maternal, placental, and fetal concentrations of amino acids. Methods A single dose of 400 mg/kg VGB in physiological saline was administered intraperitoneally to a group of Theiler outbred (TO) mice on gestational day (GD) 10. The controls received a proportionate volume of saline. Maternal blood samples, embryos, and placentas were collected at 3.5, 6.0, and 9.0 hr after treatment and their total amino acid concentrations determined in an ion-exchange amino acid analyzer. Results At 3.5 hr, there was a decrease in concentrations of some amino acids in the blood, placenta, and embryos of VGB-treated mice, but the decrease in methionine was most marked. γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) was significantly higher in the VGB group in both the embryos and the placentas at 3.5 hr but at 6.0 and 9.0 hr the differences were not significant. Vigabatrin levels were higher in the placenta than in the embryo at 3.5 hr, but at 6.0 hr there was an overlap of the VGB peak with that of tryptophan with very much lower levels than at 3.5 hr. At 9.0 hr, there was no vigabatrin peak in either the placenta or the embryo. Conclusions Maternal exposure to VGB results in peak levels of the drug after 3.5 hr in the placenta and embryo. Methionine concentration is most severely affected in VGB-treated mothers, placentas, and fetuses. We speculate that this deficiency could be a possible mechanism for the teratogenic effects of vigabatrin. Teratology 63:127–133, 2001. © 2001 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

Background No data exist on allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Aim Our aim was threefold: (i) to determine the incidence of ACD; (ii) to identify responsible allergens using the European Standard Series, TRUE TEST, and other substances; (iii) to tentatively explore population-specific reactions in Al Ain, UAE. Design This is a prospective, descriptive, hospital-based, study. Setting Tawam Hospital, Al Ain Medical District, UAE. Patients During the years 1989–1996, 373 patients (male : female = 2 : 3), presenting with cutaneous manifestations possibly related to contact allergy, were patch tested. Results 93.8% of patients presented with dermatitis affecting mostly the hands (45.1%), feet (21.4%), face (12.6%), and legs (4.6%). Two hundred and twenty-four patients (60%) (male : female = 1 : 2) tested positive for at least one substance. Nickel was the commonest sensitizer (15%) in both genders. “Fragrance mix” (8%), p-tertiary butylphenolformaldehyde (p-TBPF) resin (7.5%), thiomersal (7.5%), chromium (7.2%), cobalt (6.4%), ethylenediamine (6.4%), neomycin (5.1%), and parabens (5.1%) were prominent allergens. Glutardialdehyde, an additional substance tested together with the European Standard Series, scored significantly (4.8%). Variations from the results reported from other countries may be explained by the specific lifestyles and customs of the UAE population. Conclusions Substances contained in the TRUE TEST, plus glutardialdehyde, may be considered as the standard series for patch testing in the UAE population.

Nine thousand six hundred and ten births were prospectively studied in the three major hospitals in Al-Ain, United Arab Emirates (UAE) between October 1995 and January 1997. Babies suspected of, or diagnosed, as having central nervous system (CNS) abnormalities were evaluated by a neonatologist, a clinical geneticist and a pediatric neurologist. Brain computerized tomography/magnetic resonance imaging (CT/MRI) was performed on all babies suspected of having CNS abnormalities. In addition, metabolic screening and chromosome analysis were also performed when indicated. Of the 225 babies with congenital anomalies identified, 31 had CNS abnormalities (3.2/1000). Syndromic abnormalities of the CNS were present in 13 cases (42%), chromosomal abnormalities in one case (3.2%) and the rest included: neural tube defect (NTD) in 11 cases (36%), holoprosencephaly in two cases (6.4%) and hydrocephalus in four cases (12.9%). Detailed analysis of the syndromic types revealed that out of the 13 cases, 12 were inherited as autosomal recessive (AR) and in one case the inheritance was undetermined. Consanguinity with high level of inbreeding was present in 12 cases and the majority of the syndromes identified were extremely rare. The study indicates that CNS anomalies are fairly common in the UAE, particularly, the recessive syndromic types. Careful and detailed analysis of such anomalies is required so that accurate genetic advice can be given.

Allele and genotype frequencies for three tetrameric short tandem repeat (STR) loci: HUMTHO1, TPOX, and CSFIPO, were determined in a United Arab Emirates (UAE) national population sample (n = 119). The loci were amplified simultaneously and the PCR products were separated in polyacrylamide DNA sequencing gels. Detection of the DNA fragments was accomplished using silver staining. Allele designations were determined by comparison to an allelic ladder. One allele at each locus was sequenced to confirm the nature of the repeats and their number. Alleles at the HUMTHO1 and TPOX loci were distributed bimodally, while CSF1PO showed unimodal distribution. The observed heterozygosities were 76% for HUMTHO1, 64% for TPOX, and 71% for CSF1PO. No deviation from the Hardy-Weinberg expectations was observed in the genotype distribution for the loci TPOX and CSF1PO, but the HUMTHO1 locus did depart from HWE based on the likelihood ratio and the exact test. No correlation was detected between the alleles at any of the three pairs of loci. The allelic frequency data of these three loci in the UAE population sample can thus be used in human identity testing.

This study investigated the association of asthma, allergic rhinitis, and eczema in United Arab Emirates (UAE) schoolchildren with allergic conditions in their parents. A cross-sectional, population-based study among schoolchildren aged 6–14 years was conducted in Al-Ain City, UAE. The field survey was conducted from October 1992 to May 1993. A questionnaire was distributed to 850 UAE government school students from representative, randomly selected schools with a majority of UAE nationals. The student and both or either of the parents were present during the interview. A detailed clinical history of asthma and wheezing in the target children and a history of asthma and allergic rhinitis in their parents and siblings were obtained. It was found that 13.1% of asthmatic children had mothers with asthma (relative risk (RR) = 2.67; 95% confidence intervals (CI)= 1.65–4.35), and 15.2% had fathers who were asthmatic (RR = 2.85; 95% CI = 1.81–4.49). This contrasted with 4.4% of nonasthmatic children who had fathers with asthma, and 4.1% who had mothers with asthma. A similar pattern was seen with symptoms of allergic rhinitis when it was found that 34.3% of children who had asthma had mothers with allergic rhinitis (RR: 2.74; 95% CI: 1.90–3.94). The corresponding figure for fathers was 12.7% (RR: 0.92; 95% CI: 0.5–1.7). The frequency of either parent of the asthmatic children having allergic rhinitis was 28.6%; for both parents, it was 14.5%. It was also found that asthmatic children had 12.5% of their fathers, 32.8% of their mothers, 26.4% of either of their parents, and 33.3% of both their parents suffering from allergic rhinitis. Siblings of the asthmatic children were also studied to establish the relationship between allergic conditions in the siblings and asthma in the study sample. It was found that in the asthmatic study population the frequency of siblings having asthma was 31.9%; of those having allergic rhinitis, 21.3%; and of those having eczema, 16.1%. Twenty-nine percent of either of the parents of the children with eczema had the same condition, and the corresponding figure for allergic rhinitis was 36.5%. The prevalence rate of asthma in the schoolchildren studied increased dramatically to 22% when wheeze, asthma, or nocturnal cough were grouped together. When eczema and allergic rhinitis were also considered together along with the above, the rate increased to 31%. The size of the family did not seem to affect the parent/child association of allergic symptoms. Our findings indicate that there is a strong association between respiratory allergies and eczema in parents and in their asthmatic children, thereby indicating a strong genetic basis for the occurrence of asthma in particular and atopy in general.

Summary: A cross-sectional prospective study was conducted between the period December 1991 and November 1992, to identify the extent of smoking among practising doctors and other health professionals in general hospitals and health clinics in Al-Ain, United Arab Emirates. The study population consisted of 300 health professionals (doctors, specialists both clinical and non-clinical, pharmacists and dentists). They were handed self-administered questionnaires adapted from the World Health Organization standard questionnaire on smoking among health professionals. Among the responding 268 (89%) health professionals 197 (73.5%) were men, and 71 (26.5%) women. Among the men health professionals 86 (43.7%) were current smokers, 24 (12.2%) were ex-smokers and 87 (44.2%) were non-smokers, while among the women health professionals 4 (5.6%) were smokers, 1 (1.4%) was an ex-smoker and 66 (93%) were non-smokers. Doctors were uniformly aware of the detrimental effects of smoking, particularly its association with lung cancer, coronary artery disease, chronic bronchitis, and laryngeal cancer, and this was the major reason for their abstaining or wanting to quit the habit. The relationship of smoking with bladder cancer, soft tissue lesion (mouth and lip) and neonatal death was not well appreciated. Counselling patients about the hazards of smoking was practised significantly less often by doctors who smoked. The majority (83.6%) expressed the need for specific training for counselling patients to stop smoking. The options favoured by the health professionals for preventing smoking included a ban on tobacco advertising, specific health warnings on cigarette packets and restriction on smoking in public places, particularly in hospitals and clinics.

A cross-sectional community-based survey was conducted from August 1999 to February 2000 on native women of the United Arab Emirates to examine the knowledge attitudes barriers and practices related to cervical cancer screening. The study included married women aged 40-65 from 12 primary health care clinics. Qualified nurses interviewed the subjects and questionnaires were administered during face-to-face interviews with a health educator. The results showed that 15.4% had had a Papanicolau (Pap) test for early detection of cancer. In addition the frequency of screening for cervical cancer was associated with age employment type of area of residence and number of clinic visits. On the other hand factors such as being employed living in a semi-urban area and a smaller annual number of clinic visits were independent predictors of having a Pap test. The study also showed that 97% preferred having female health personnel administer the Pap test. Overall the rate of Pap tests is low among Arab women which is attributed to the infrequent offer of such screening.

Software defect prediction aims to reduce software testing efforts by guiding testers through the defect-prone sections of software systems. Defect predictors are widely used in organizations to predict defects in order to save time and effort as an alternative to other techniques such as manual code reviews. The application of a defect prediction model in a real-life setting is difficult because it requires software metrics and defect data from past projects to predict the defect-proneness of new projects. It is, on the other hand, very practical because it is easy to apply, can detect defects using less time and reduces the testing effort. We have built a learning-based defect prediction model for a telecommunication company during a period of one year. In this study, we have briefly explained our model, presented its pay-off and described how we have implemented the model in the company. Furthermore, we have compared the performance of our model with that of another testing strategy applied in a pilot project that implemented a new process called Team Software Process (TSP). Our results show that defect predictors can be used as supportive tools during a new process implementation, predict 75% of code defects, and decrease the testing time compared with 25% of the code defects detected through more labor-intensive strategies such as code reviews and formal checklists.
