Abstract

Accurate depth estimation is a challenging, yet essential step in the conversion of a 2D image sequence to a 3D stereo sequence. We present a novel approach to construct a temporally coherent depth map for each image in a sequence. The quality of the estimated depth is high enough for the purpose of2D to 3D stereo conversion. Our approach first combines the video sequence into a panoramic image. A user can scribble on this single panoramic image to specify depth information. The depth is then propagated to the remainder of the panoramic image. This depth map is then remapped to the original sequence and used as the initial guess for each individual depth map in the sequence. Our approach greatly simplifies the required user interaction during the assignment of the depth and allows for relatively free camera movement during the generation of a panoramic image. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our method by showing stereo converted sequences with various camera motions. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract

The reconstruction of 3D terrain geometry from images is essential for compositing CG objects into a live-action background or for 2D to 3D conversion of terrain scenes. We present a novel mesh refinement algorithm for the creation of stereoscopic images of terrain scenes. Previous approaches emphasise the smoothness of the resulting terrain mesh over accuracy 1. Point cloud-based methods cannot effectively recover the entire surface, leading to visual discrepancies after monocular sequences are converted into 3D stereo. As misalignment or inaccurate 3D terrain data over corresponding 2D background images can result in visual fatigue when stereo sequences are generated, ensuring accuracy of the reconstructed geometry is very important. To achieve the necessary accuracy, our method evaluates mesh errors utilising a texture projection onto the geometry and refines the mesh using Laplacian-based editing. Our algorithm automatically generates stereoscopic images of terrain scenes. In addition, our method simplifies identification and compositing of foreground objects on the terrain geometry. 12. Comprehensive functional assessment of MLH1 variants of unknown significance

Abstract

Lynch syndrome is associated with germline mutations in DNA mismatch repair (MMR) genes. Up to 30% of DNA changes found are variants of unknown significance (VUS). Our aim was to assess the pathogenicity of eight MLH1 VUS identified in patients suspected of Lynch syndrome. All of them are novel or not previously characterized. For their classification, we followed a strategy that integrates family history, tumor pathology, and control frequency data with a variety of in silico and in vitro analyses at RNA and protein level, such as MMR assay, MLH1 and PMS2 expression, and subcellular localization. Five MLH1 VUS were classified as pathogenic: c.[248G>T(;)306G>C], c.[780C>G;788A>C], and c.791-7T>A affected mRNA processing, whereas c.218T>C (p.L73P) and c.244G>A (p.T82A) impaired MMR activity. Two other VUS were considered likely neutral: the silent c.702G>A variant did not affect mRNA processing or stability, and c.974G>A (p.R325Q) did not influence MMR function. In contrast, variant c.25C>T (p.R9W) could not be classified, as it associated with intermediate levels of MMR activity. Comprehensive functional assessment of MLH1 variants was useful in their classification and became relevant in the diagnosis and genetic counseling of carrier families. Hum Mutat 33:15761588, 2012. Abstract

In order to investigate the two-dimensional flow of a non-Newtonian fluid, such as an elastomer liquid over a cylinder, a simplified model is applied. The analysis is carried out to study the thermophysical properties of the melt elastomer flow with Prandtl variable in the presence of internal heat generation. The temperature-dependent physical properties such as velocity, contour temperature, surface temperature as a function of contour velocity, and pressure are considered and discussed. Moreover, the exchange of energy from the surface to the fluids is examined through the variation in the Rayleigh number.

Abstract

The aim of this work is to synthesize Nb-V oxide catalysts by sol gel route starting from metal alkoxides using different H2O/V ratios. Dried samples are characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic absorption, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis. Calcination of dried materials up to 600°C in flowing air has been followed with Thermogravimetry-Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (TG-FTIR) spectroscopic analysis. The catalytic properties of calcined materials are tested in the oxidative dehydrogenation of ethane at 600°C. An improvement of the catalytic performances of vanadium for the gel prepared with the higher H2O/V ratio is found with respect to those of the supported catalyst due to the better interaction between vanadium and niobium.

Abstract

The aim of the present study is to synthesize CaO•GeO2 glass nanocomposite powders. The samples are prepared at 1450°C, and to investigate the structure of the samples, differential thermal analysis (DTA), X-ray diffraction, and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy are used. The main crystallizing phase is found to be CaGe2O5 crystals. Furthermore, the potential antibacterial properties of the materials towards the Gram-negative bacteria, Escherichia coli, are preliminarily studied.
