Abstract Objective This study investigated the effectiveness and tolerability of brivaracetam (BRV) monotherapy in a large series of patients with epilepsy. Method This was a multicenter, retrospective, observational, non‐interventional study in 24 hospitals across Spain. Patients aged ≥18 years who started on BRV monotherapy, either as first‐line or following conversion, at least 1 year before database closure were included. Patients were evaluated at baseline and at 3, 6 and 12 months after initiation of BRV monotherapy, in accordance with usual clinical practice at these centers. Data were collected retrospectively from patients' individual charts by participating physicians. The primary effectiveness and safety endpoints were the percentage of seizure‐free patients 1 year after initiation of BRV monotherapy and the proportion of patients reporting adverse events (AEs) over the complete follow‐up period. Retention rates and subpopulation analysis (levetiracetam switchers, elderly and different etiologies) were also investigated. Results A total of 276 patients were included (48 with BRV as first‐line monotherapy and 228 who converted to BRV monotherapy). The overall retention rate in monotherapy at 12 months was 89.9% (87.5% for first‐line monotherapy group; 90.4% for conversion‐to‐monotherapy group). Seizure‐freedom rates at 12 months were 77.8% (75% for first‐line monotherapy group; 78.4% for conversion‐to‐monotherapy group). AEs occurred in 39.5% of patients at 12 months (35.4% for first‐line monotherapy group; 40.4% for conversion‐to‐monotherapy group). Most AEs were mild‐to‐moderate. The most frequent AEs were irritability (12.3%) and dizziness (10.1%). The most frequent AEs leading to BRV withdrawal were dizziness (1.8%) and memory problems (1.4%). Similar outcomes in terms of effectiveness and tolerability of BRV monotherapy were observed in patients switching from levetiracetam, those with different epilepsy etiologies, and elderly patients. Significance BRV was effective and well tolerated both as first‐line monotherapy and following conversion to monotherapy in a real‐world setting of patients with epilepsy. Plain Language Summary The goal of the medical treatment of epilepsy is to ensure best possible patient quality of life, by maximizing seizure control and minimizing medication toxicity. Brivaracetam (BRV) is a new‐generation epilepsy treatment that is well tolerated by patients. In our study, monotherapy with BRV reduced seizures in patients who had not received other treatments and in patients who switched from a previous treatment to BRV monotherapy. BRV was well tolerated and also effective in sensitive patients (i.e., the elderly and those who had epilepsy caused by a brain tumor or a brain injury).

Abstract Background Workload associated with the high frequency Colombian Paso Fino gait has not been evaluated. Objectives To determine the oxygen consumption (V̇O2), heart rate (HR), stride frequency: breathing ratio, and hematology associated with the Paso Fino gait, including whether exercise‐induced pulmonary hemorrhage (EIPH) occurs. Animals Eleven Paso Fino horses. Methods Prospective cohort study. Horses performed a standardized Paso Fino gait test across a wooden sounding board, simulating competition. V̇O2 and ventilatory parameters (tidal volume [VT]; peak inspiratory and expiratory airflows [PkV̇I, PkV̇E]; respiratory rate [RR], minute ventilation [V̇E]) were measured using a portable ergospirometry facemask. Heart rate was measured using electrocardiograms. Post‐exercise lactate, hematocrit, bicarbonate, pH, electrolytes, and biochemistry concentrations were measured. EIPH was assessed via tracheobronchoscopy. Four horses completed a secondary high‐intensity gallop to elicit peak V̇O2 for comparative purposes. Results Median [IQR] mean individual HR during the Paso Fino gait was 190 [178, 201] bpm. Relative V̇O2 measured 49.8 [48.4, 59.5] mL/(kg min; VT = 8.6 [8.0, 10.7] L; RR = 87.1 [75.4, 99.5] bpm; V̇E = 869 [740, 902] L/min; PkV̇I = 33.4 [32.7, 37.2] L/s; PkV̇E = 44.2 [40.3, 46.0] L/s). Horses took 2.8 [2.7, 2.9] strides/second and had a stride frequency: breathing ratio of 2.0 [1.8, 2.3]. Post‐exercise blood lactate concentration and hematocrit measured 2.7 mmol/L and 50% respectively. Three horses showed endoscopic evidence of Grade‐1 EIPH. The Paso Fino gait V̇O2 and HR equaled 79% V̇O2pk and 91% maximal HR, respectively, based on the high‐intensity gallop. Conclusions and Clinical Importance The Paso Fino gait represents submaximal exercise based on V̇O2

Abstract Background Periparturient reproductive complications appear to be common in hospitalized goats. More information is needed about periparturient reproductive complications and survival in goats with these conditions. Objective Identify exposure factors associated with nonsurvival in periparturient does hospitalized ≤1 day or ≥2 days. Animals A total of 198 periparturient does presented to 9 university veterinary hospitals from October 2021 to June 2022. Methods Multicenter, matched case‐control study. Conditional logistic regression was used to identify exposure factors associated with nonsurvival in periparturient does hospitalized ≤1 day or ≥2 days. Results Overall doe survival was 79% (156/198). Survival in the 1st day of hospitalization was 71% (52/73) and survival in does hospitalized ≥2 days was 83% (104/125). Abstract In accordance with Article 6 of Regulation (EC) No 396/2005, the Federal Public Service (FPS) Health, Food chain Safety and Environment submitted a request to the competent national authority in Belgium (evaluating Member State, EMS) to modify the existing maximum residue levels (MRLs) for the active substance propamocarb in radishes for the residues occurring in radish roots and in small radish leaves (proposed to be classified under the subgroup of Roman rocket/rucola). The data submitted in support of the request were found to be sufficient to derive MRL proposals for radishes and small radish leaves. Adequate analytical methods for enforcement are available to control the residues of propamocarb on the commodities under consideration at the validated limit of quantification (LOQ) of 0.01 mg/kg. Based on the risk assessment results, EFSA concluded that the short‐term and long‐term intake of residues resulting from the use of propamocarb according to the reported agricultural practice is unlikely to present a risk to consumer health. The chronic consumer risk assessment shall be regarded as indicative since affected by uncertainty related to the data gaps identified in the MRL review.

Abstract In accordance with Article 6 of Regulation (EC) No 396/2005, the applicant ISK Biosciences Europe N.V. submitted a request to the competent national authority in Finland to modify the existing maximum residue level (MRL) for the active substance flonicamid in honey. The data submitted in support of the request were not found appropriate to derive an MRL proposal for honey. The assessment was complemented by an analysis of the monitoring data available from the EU monitoring programmes (conducted during 2009–2023). The results from the monitoring data analysis suggest that the current MRL is still sufficient to account for the residue uptake in honey resulting from plant protection products uses of flonicamid on melliferious crops. Adequate analytical methods for enforcement are available to control the residues of flonicamid in honey according to the residue definition as the sum of flonicamid, TFNA and TFNG, expressed as flonicamid at the validated limit of quantification (LOQ) of 0.01 mg/kg for each compound. Based on the risk assessment results, EFSA concluded that the short‐term and long‐term intake of residues in honey at a level of 0.05 mg/kg according to the monitoring data is unlikely to present a risk to consumer health.

Abstract In accordance with Article 6 of Regulation (EC) No 396/2005, the applicant Corteva Agriscience International Sàrl submitted a request to the competent national authority in the Netherlands to modify the existing maximum residue levels (MRLs) in certain animal commodities (fat and liver) and honey. The data submitted in support of the request were found to be sufficient to derive an MRL proposal for honey. Adequate analytical methods for enforcement are available to control the residues according to the residue definition for enforcement proposed as ‘picloram, free and conjugated, expressed as picloram’ in honey at the validated limit of quantification (LOQ) of 0.01 mg/kg. For the commodities of animal origin, although the submitted data were found to be sufficient, EFSA concluded that no change of the existing MRLs was necessary. Based on the risk assessment results, EFSA concluded that the short‐term and long‐term intake of residues expected in honey, resulting from the existing uses of picloram on melliferous crops, is unlikely to present a risk to consumer health.

Abstract In accordance with Article 6 of Regulation (EC) No 396/2005, the applicant Nufarm Crop Products UK Ltd. submitted a request to the competent national authority in Italy to modify the existing maximum residue levels (MRLs) for the active substance dichlorprop‐P in barley, oat, rye and wheat grain. The data submitted in support of the request were found to be sufficient to derive MRL proposals for these cereal grains. Adequate analytical methods for enforcement are available to control the residues of dichlorprop‐P in the commodities under consideration at the validated limit of quantification (LOQ) of 0.01 mg/kg and in animal matrices at the validated LOQ of 0.01 mg/kg. Based on the risk assessment results, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) concluded that the short‐term and long‐term intake of residues resulting from the use of dichlorprop‐P‐2‐ethylhexyl (dichlorprop‐P 2‐EHE) according to the reported agricultural practices is unlikely to present a risk to consumer health.

Abstract Aim We present the baseline characteristics of the PREFERS Stockholm epidemiological study on the natural history and course of new onset heart failure (HF) aiming to improve phenotyping focusing on HF with preserved left ventricular ejection fraction (HFpEF) pathophysiology. Methods and results New onset HF patients diagnosed in hospital or at outpatient HF clinics were included at five Stockholm hospitals 2015–2018 and characterized by N‐terminal pro brain natriuretic peptide (NT‐proBNP), biomarkers, echocardiography, and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (subset). HFpEF [left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) ≥ 50%] was compared with HF with mildly reduced LVEF (HFmrEF; LVEF 41–49%) and with HF with reduced LVEF (HFrEF; LVEF ≤ 40%). We included 547 patients whereof HFpEF (n = 137; 25%), HFmrEF (n = 61; 11%), and HFrEF (n = 349; 64%). HFpEF patients were older (76; 70–81 years; median; interquartile range) than HFrEF (67; 58–74; P 34 mL/m2 in 57% vs. 61% (P = 0.040). HFmrEF patients were intermediary between HFpEF and HFrEF for LV mass, LV volumes, and RV volumes but had the highest proportion of left ventricular hypertrophy and the lowest proportion of elevated E/é. Conclusions Phenotype data in new onset HF patients recruited in a broad clinical setting showed that 25% had HFpEF, were older, more often women, and had greater comorbidity burden. PREFERS is well suited to further explore biomarker and imaging components of HFpEF pathophysiology and may contribute to the emerging knowledge of HF epidemiology. Abstract Lung adenocarcinoma is a common cancer; even though it has a strong association with previous smoking, there has been described nonsmokers‐related cases. Symptoms varies from asymptomatic to hemoptysis or pleural effusion. We describe a case of a patient who presented with painful scapula as primary manifestation of advanced pulmonary malignancy.

Abstract In accordance with Article 6 of Regulation (EC) No 396/2005, the applicant Sumitomo Chemical Agro Europe S.A.S. submitted a request to the competent national authority in Greece to modify the existing maximum residue levels (MRLs) for the active substance pyriproxyfen in apricots and peaches. The data submitted in support of the request were found to be sufficient to derive MRL proposal of 0.4 mg/kg for apricots, whereas for peaches an MRL amendment is not necessary. Adequate analytical methods for enforcement are available to control the residues of pyriproxyfen on the commodities under consideration at the validated limit of quantification (LOQ) of 0.01 mg/kg. Based on the risk assessment results, EFSA concluded that the short‐term and long‐term intake of residues resulting from the intended use of pyriproxyfen on apricots and peaches according to the reported agricultural practice is unlikely to present a risk to consumer health.

Abstract In accordance with Article 6 of Regulation (EC) No 396/2005, the applicant Nissan Chemical Europe S.A.S. submitted a request to the competent national authority in the Netherlands to set an import tolerance for the active substance pyridaben in grapefruits imported from the United States of America. The data submitted in support of the requests were found to be sufficient to derive an MRL proposal of 0.5 mg/kg for grapefruits. Adequate analytical methods for enforcement are available to control the residues of pyridaben on the commodity under consideration, at or above the validated LOQ of 0.01 mg/kg. Based on the risk assessment results, EFSA concluded that the short‐term and long‐term intake of residues resulting from the uses of pyridaben on imported grapefruits from United States according to the reported agricultural practices, is unlikely to present a risk to consumer health.

Abstract Accurate sex identification is crucial for elucidating the biology of a species. In the absence of directly observable sexual characteristics, sex identification of wild fauna can be challenging, if not impossible. Molecular sexing offers a powerful alternative to morphological sexing approaches. Here, we present SeXY, a novel sex‐identification pipeline, for very low‐coverage shotgun sequencing data from a single individual. SeXY was designed to utilize low‐effort screening data for sex identification and does not require a conspecific sex‐chromosome assembly as reference. We assess the accuracy of our pipeline to data quantity by downsampling sequencing data from 100,000 to 1000 mapped reads and to reference genome selection by mapping to a variety of reference genomes of various qualities and phylogenetic distance. We show that our method is 100% accurate when mapping to a high‐quality (highly contiguous N50 > 30 Mb) conspecific genome, even down to 1000 mapped reads. The data submitted in support of the request were found to be sufficient to derive an MRL proposal for these commodities. Adequate analytical methods for enforcement are available to control the residues of triclopyr in the plant matrices under consideration at the validated LOQ of 0.01 mg/kg. Based on the risk assessment results, EFSA concluded that the short‐term and long‐term intake of residues resulting from the use of triclopyr according to the reported agricultural practice is unlikely to present a risk to consumer health.

Abstract In accordance with Article 6 of Regulation (EC) No 396/2005, the applicant Nufarm Europe Gmbh submitted a request to the competent national authority in Austria to modify the existing maximum residue levels (MRLs) for the active substance acetamiprid in honey, linseeds, poppy seeds, mustard seeds and gold of pleasure seeds. The data submitted in support of the request were found to be sufficient to derive MRL proposals for linseeds, poppy seeds, mustard seeds and gold of pleasure seeds. For honey, however, data gaps were identified by EFSA and were not fully addressed by the justification provided by the applicant. Considering the remaining uncertainties, risk managers are given the option to either accept the justification provided and the related uncertainties or to merge the provided data with a data set from a previous application to derive an MRL proposal. Adequate analytical methods for enforcement are available to control the residues of acetamiprid in plant matrices and in honey at the validated limit of quantification (LOQ) of 0.01 mg/kg. Based on the risk assessment results, EFSA concluded that the short‐term and long‐term intake of residues resulting from the use of acetamiprid according to the reported agricultural practices is unlikely to present a risk to consumer health.

Abstract In accordance with Article 6 of Regulation (EC) No 396/2005, the applicant Spiess‐Urania Chemicals GmbH submitted a request to the competent national authority in Austria to modify the existing maximum residue levels (MRLs) for the active substance copper compounds in the whole group of other small fruits and berries. The data submitted in support of the request were found to be sufficient to derive MRL proposals for the whole subgroup of other small fruits and berries. Adequate analytical methods for enforcement of mineral copper independently from its chemical form are available for matrices under consideration at the validated limit of quantification (LOQ) of 5 mg/kg. Based on indicative risk assessment results, EFSA concluded that the long‐term intake of copper residues resulting from the intended and existing uses, natural background levels and monitoring levels might present a risk to consumer health. Although residues in other small fruits and berries are minor contributors to the overall consumer exposure, a risk management decision has to be taken on whether it is appropriate to increase the existing MRLs for these crops, given that a potential consumer intake concern could not be excluded.

Abstract The applicant Syngenta Crop Protection AG submitted a request to the competent national authority in Spain to evaluate the confirmatory data that were identified for in the framework of the maximum residue level (MRL) review under Article 12 of Regulation (EC) No 396/2005 as not available. To address the data gaps, a new storage stability study, new residues trials and a validated analytical enforcement method for the determination of the relevant residues in animal products were submitted. The data gaps were considered satisfactorily addressed for the plant commodities. The new information provided required a revision of the existing MRL for avocados. As regards the commodities of animal origin, the data gaps were only partially addressed and therefore further risk management considerations are required regarding the revision of the existing MRLs which were derived from Codex MRLs. The risk assessment performed for thiabendazole was also updated. No risk was identified.

Abstract In compliance with Article 43 of Regulation (EC) No 396/2005, EFSA received a mandate from the European Commission to perform a targeted review of the maximum residue levels (MRLs) for indoxacarb based on Codex maximum residue limits (CXLs) or on import tolerances which might still be maintained after the expire of the approval of the active substance. EFSA screened the existing MRLs based on CXLs or on import tolerances considering the new toxicological reference values established during the peer review process for the renewal of the approval of indoxacarb and identified the MRLs for which an acute risk could not be excluded and several MRLs that are unlikely to pose a risk for consumers. Fall‐back MRLs could not be proposed for the commodities exceeding the new toxicological reference values as no further data were provided during the call for data. Therefore, risk managers may consider maintaining only the MRLs identified during the screening as safe for consumers. However, for some of the proposed MRLs, further consideration by risk managers is needed due to the uncertainties identified.

Abstract X‐linked hypophosphatemia (XLH) is a rare disexase in which patients present with severe bowing of the legs, joint pain, and mobility problems. XLH has major adverse repercussions on the quality of life.

Abstract As wind energy rapidly expands worldwide, information to minimize impacts of this development on biodiversity is urgently needed. Here we demonstrate how data collected by weather radar networks can inform placement and operation of wind facilities to reduce collisions and minimize habitat‐related impacts on nocturnally migrating birds. We found over a third of nocturnal migrants flew through altitudes within the rotor‐swept zone surrounding the North American Great Lakes, a continentally important migration corridor. Migrating birds concentrated in terrestrial stopover habitats within 20‐km from shorelines, a distance well beyond the current guidelines for construction of new land‐based facilities, and their distributions varied seasonally and at local and regional scales, creating predictable opportunities to minimize impacts from wind energy development and operation. Networked radar data are available across the United States and other countries and broad application of this approach could provide information critical to bird‐friendly expansion of this globally important energy source.

Abstract In the development of innovative technology products, companies of all sizes are being encouraged to innovate responsibly and regulators are encouraged to adapt their regulatory systems to be smarter, more proportionate and adaptive to the needs of innovative technologies. The British Standards Institution Responsible Innovation (RI) Guide (Publicly Available Specification [PAS] 440) is an industry‐wide standard relevant to both these policy trends. It supports companies by providing a framework to demonstrate the balance between the potential benefits and harms and, if necessary, to take action to maximise the benefits and/or minimise the harms. It includes guidance on engagement with stakeholders and will codify what stakeholders can expect from companies undertaking responsible innovation, paving the way to more harmonious relationships among stakeholders with differing interests and values. A cross‐sectoral survey of innovative companies showed that 90% favoured the development of such a standard. PAS 440 was also trialled in two early‐stage biotechnology companies and its expected benefits included contributing to coordinated responsible behaviour along a supply chain; better company and stakeholder understanding of the product properties; supporting decision‐making on whether or not to start a company; considering the risks of not developing the product and avoiding reputational risks. Benefits were expected to be increasingly significant as the RI standard becomes widely adopted.

Abstract The conclusions of the EFSA following the peer review of the initial risk assessments carried out by the competent authority of the rapporteur Member State, the United Kingdom, for the pesticide active substance Purpureocillium lilacinum strain PL11 and the considerations as regards the inclusion of the substance in Annex IV of Regulation (EC) No 396/2005 are reported. The context of the peer review was that required by Regulation (EC) No 1107/2009 of the European Parliament and of the Council. The conclusions were reached on the basis of the evaluation of the representative uses of Purpureocillium lilacinum strain PL11 as nematicide on tomato, pepper, aubergine, cucumber, courgette, melon, watermelon, pumpkin (field and greenhouse applications). The reliable endpoints appropriate for use in regulatory risk assessment are presented. Missing information identified as being required by the regulatory framework is listed.

Abstract In accordance with Article 6 of Regulation (EC) No 396/2005, the applicant DuPont submitted a request to the competent national authority in Ireland to set an import tolerance for the active substance oxathiapiprolin in blueberries in support of an authorised use in the United States. The data submitted in support of the request were found to be sufficient to derive a maximum residue level (MRL) proposal for highbush blueberries by noting that lowbush blueberries (Vaccinium angustifolium) are excluded from the authorised use in the United States. Adequate analytical methods for enforcement are available to control the residues of oxathiapiprolin in plant matrices at the validated limit of quantification (LOQ) of 0.01 mg/kg. Based on the risk assessment results, EFSA concluded that the long‐term intake of residues resulting from the use of oxathiapiprolin according to the reported agricultural practice is unlikely to present a risk to consumer health.

Abstract In accordance with Article 6 of Regulation (EC) No 396/2005, the applicant Probelte SA submitted a request to the competent national authority in Spain to modify the existing maximum residue levels (MRLs) for the active substance folpet in lettuces. The data submitted in support of the request were found to be sufficient to derive an MRL proposal for lettuces. Adequate analytical methods for enforcement are available to control the residues of folpet and phthalimide in high water content commodities at the validated LOQ values of 0.05 mg/kg for folpet and 0.01 mg/kg for phthalimide. Based on the risk assessment results, EFSA concluded that the short‐term and long‐term intake of residues resulting from the use of folpet according to the reported agricultural practice is unlikely to present a risk to consumer health.

Abstract In accordance with Article 6 of Regulation (EC) No 396/2005, the applicant Dow AgroSciences Ltd submitted a request to the competent national authority in Greece to modify the existing maximum residue levels (MRLs) for the active substance sulfoxaflor in lettuce and salad plants (except lettuce), beans with pods and peas without pods. The data submitted in support of the request were found to be sufficient to derive MRL proposals for all crops under consideration. Adequate analytical methods for enforcement are available to control the residues of sulfoxaflor in the commodities under consideration at the validated limit of quantification (LOQ) of 0.01 mg/kg. Based on the risk assessment results, EFSA concluded that the short‐term and long‐term intake of residues resulting from the use of sulfoxaflor according to the reported agricultural practices is unlikely to present a risk to consumer health.
