Problem: This study aimed to determine the prevalence of depressive symptoms, pain (headache, abdominal pain, back pain) and analgesic use among Turkish adolescents. Additionally, it aimed to examine the association between depressive symptoms and pain and analgesic use in adolescents., Methods: This cross-sectional, correlational study was conducted in Izmir, Turkey with 954 adolescents aged 11-19 years. Data were collected with the "socio-demographic questionnaires" and the "Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale for Children". Analyzes were performed using descriptive statistics and multiple logistic regression analysis., Findings: Of the adolescents, 632 (66.2%) showed depressive symptoms. Of the adolescents, 424 (44.4%) experienced headache, 256 (26.8%) experienced abdominal pain, and 343 (36.0%) experienced back pain. A total of 309 (32.4%) adolescents used analgesics for headaches, 132 (13.8%) abdominal pain, and 47 (4.9%) for back pain. Female gender, high level maternal education, bad economic status, poor health perception, bad school success, pain and analgesic use were the correlated variables with adolescent depression., Conclusions: The depressive symptoms, headache and back pain, and use of analgesics especially for headaches were common among adolescents. The results showed depression in adolescent correlated with pain (headache, abdominal pain, and back pain) and analgesic use. Background and Purpose: Hemodialysis (HD) may have some adverse effects on the nervous system. Headache is the most commonly reported neurological symptom amongst HD patients. Our aim was to determine the frequency, clinical characteristics and triggering factors of HD-related headache (HRH) and to evaluate preventive strategies for reducing HRH., Method: In all, 494 patients were included. Comparative controls (CC) were classified within the same patients without headache. Arterial systolic/diastolic blood pressure, blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and creatinine were correlated before/after one HD. The urea reduction ratio during the dialysis session was determined., Results: A total of 175 patients (35.4%) with a mean age of 57.3 ± 15.7 years were diagnosed with HRH. HRH was more common in males (P < 0.001). Headache was started a mean of 2.90 ± 0.86 h after the HD. The common localization of pain was reported to be bifrontal in 41.7% (n = 73). The mean duration of headache was 6.22 ± 7.8 h, with a duration of ≤4 h reported by 64.0% of patients. The mean Visual Analog Scale score was 5.64 ± 2.05. The differences between pre/post-dialysis BUN values were 94.6 ± 31.1 in HRH patients and 86.8 ± 28.5 in the CC group (P = 0.006). The systolic blood pressure difference between the pre/post-dialysis measurements was 22.4 ± 16.5 mmHg in HRH patients and 12.8 ± 19.4 mmHg in CC(P < 0.001). Patients with HRH had significantly higher mean systolic and diastolic blood pressure pre-dialysis values (systolic, P = 0.002; diastolic, P < 0.001). The differences in systolic/diastolic blood pressure between pre/post-dialysis were higher in the HRH group (P < 0.001, P = 0.001, respectively)., Conclusion: Regulating the frequency and timing of dialysis may provide better management in HRH with high BUN levels and high pre-dialysis blood pressure., (© 2018 EAN.)

Objective: While previous studies have investigated the prevalence of restless legs syndrome (RLS) in patients with migraine, we aimed to explore the prevalence and characteristics of migraine in adult patients diagnosed with RLS., Backgrounds: The association of primary headaches, especially of migraine, with RLS has recently attracted much attention. Migraine prevalence was reported to be higher in patients with RLS than in the general population, and the role of dopamine was strengthened., Methods: We evaluated 265 consecutive adult RLS patients (137 males and 128 females) followed up in a Sleep Disorders Unit and diagnosed according to criteria defined by the International Restless Legs Syndrome Study Group (IRLSSG). RLS characteristics, and the severity, were performed by using the IRLSSG severity scale. The diagnosis of headache subtypes was defined by the International Classification of Headache Disorders. Gender, age, age at RLS onset, duration of RLS, family history of RLS, family history of headache, presence of depression, any treatments given for RLS, and the change in headache following RLS treatment were questioned., Results: The mean age of the study population was 50.4 ± 12.8 years, mean age at RLS onset was 41.6 ± 13.2 years, and mean disease duration was 8.40 ± 8.6 years. Of these, 163 patients had headache; 40 of them were diagnosed to have migraine-type headache (15.1%). The presence of migraine-type headache was 9.4% in males with RLS, and 21.1% in female RLS patients. In RLS patients with migraine, 67.5% were females, while 48.0% of RLS patients with other types of headache were females (P = .032), and only 41.2% of RLS patients without headache were females (P = .005). The severity of RLS was significantly higher in patients with migraine compared with those without headache (P < .001). The presence of depression, the family history of RLS, and headache were also higher in patients with migraine compared with RLS patients with other types of headache or those without headache. Thirty-six patients with headache reported partial or substantial benefit from RLS treatment., Conclusions: Our results did not suggest higher rates of migraine-type headache in RLS patients when compared with population-based prevalence studies from Turkey. Alternatively, the severity of RLS was significantly higher in patients with migraine. Although the increase in these scores does not constitute a relationship etiopathogenetic, it suggests a correlation between the type cross-model nociceptive systems. Moreover, the family history of RLS was higher in patients with migraine.
