This report describes a solitary syringocystadenoma papilliferum, a rare skin tumor, in a 9-year-old boy who was known to have Niemann-Pick disease. To our knowledge, this association has not been described in the medical literature and this is the first report describing such association.

A patient with malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) coexistent with mucinous cystadenoma of the pancreas is reported. Primary MFH of the pancreas is rare, with only six patients reported in the world medical literature. A patient with MFH coexistent with a pancreatic mucinous epithelial tumor has not been reported previously, although two patients with pseudosarcomatous tumor associated with mucinous cystadenocarcinoma of the pancreas have been reported. Mural nodules of similar histologic appearance have been reported in ovarian mucinous tumors. The authors believe this to be the first report of the occurrence of MFH in mucinous cystadenoma of the pancreas.

Background: Mucinous tumors of the appendix and ovary are known to occur together in association with pseudomyxoma peritonei. It has been postulated that this association may be attributable to the development of independent tumors or to metastasis from one site to another., Methods and Results: This article reports two patients with concomitant mucinous ovarian and appendiceal tumors in the absence of pseudomyxoma peritonei., Conclusions: The evidence suggests that these tumors are independent primary neoplasms that develop as a result of neoplastic field change that affects colonic-type epithelium.

A case of metastasis from squamous carcinoma stage 1B of the cervix to a borderline cystadenoma of the ovary is described. In addition, the patient had atypical endometrial hyperplasia. The patient underwent a radical hysterectomy with no adjuvant postoperative treatment and has resumed work, with no sign of recurrence one year postoperatively. The aspects of the metastasis to the ovary, multiple tumors in the genital tract and tumor-to-tumor metastasis are discussed. Reports on ovarian metastasis in low-stage squamous carcinoma of the cervix are few and it still seems justified to spare the ovaries at surgery in the young patient.

Elevated amylase activity was noted in the pleural effusion of a patient who was later found to have a stage I low-grade serous papillary ovarian neoplasm. The effusion resolved spontaneously after resection of the ovarian tumor, which contained large amounts of amylase activity. The ultrastructure of the tumor epithelium resembled that of normal salpinx. Secretory-type cells were present with apical, variably electron-dense secretory granules and cytoplasmic glycogen deposits. Amylase activity in the ovarian neoplasm probably resulted from the presence of functioning endosalpingeal-type epithelium in the tumor. In cases of effusion with unexplained amylase elevations, the possibility of serous ovarian neoplasia should be considered, even in the absence of demonstrable extra-ovarian dissemination.

Borderline tumors with papillae that are architecturally similar to those of serous tumors but with a lining of more than one mullerian cell type have not been well characterized in in the literature. We have studied 36 such tumors. The patients averaged 35 years of age. Twenty-two percent of the tumors were bilateral; all were confined to the ovaries as confirmed at operation. Fifty-three percent were associated with endometriosis. Follow-up information was available on 34 patients for a mean interval of 4.8 years. A tumor developed in the contralateral ovary in one patient 2 years after unilateral salpingo-oophorectomy. Three patients had pelvic recurrences between 7 months and 3 years, but all of them were successfully treated and none have died. These tumors differ clinically and pathologically from intestinal-type mucinous borderline tumors, but they have many similarities with mullerian mucinous borderline tumors and, to a lesser extent, with serous borderline tumors.

A case of acute, fatal, rapidly progressive pure myopathy associated with ovarian carcinoma is described. The first symptoms of carcinomatous myopathy occurred 8 months after surgical treatment and combined chemotherapy. The patient died 2 months after onset of myopathy. The clinical and pathologic findings of the myopathy are discussed.
