Diamond has been regarded as a promising microdosimeter in radiation protection and radiotherapy due to its excellent properties. However, as the diamond is not tissue equivalent, a conversion of the measured spectra in the diamond microdosimeter to the tissue site is needed. In this work, we intend to deduce a method for converting the microdosimetric spectra from diamond to tissue in the proton therapy application based on the Chapman-Kolmogorov equation and investigate the validity of this method in spectral conversion.The comparison of stopping power and energy deposition distribution of diamond and tissue shows that the conversion of the spectra in diamond to tissue can be performed by a simple scaling factor. Therefore, the equivalence of the energy deposition spectra in the diamond microdosimeter and a tissue site of the same size in the same radiation field was studied first to obtain the scaling factor. Then, the spectra conversion method was derived from the Chapman-Kolmogorov equation and the scaling factor. The Geant4 simulation was employed to settle this study.Theoretical and Geant4 simulation results indicate that the linear stopping power ratio of diamond to tissue is adequate to convert the microdosimetric spectra in diamond to tissue of identical dimension. The conversion results indicate that the energy deposition spectra converted from diamond to bone agree well with the spectra calculated by Geant4 along the Bragg curve. As for water, a good agreement of the converted and calculated spectra was found at the plateau of the Bragg curve and the distal part of the Bragg peak. At the proximal part of the Bragg peak, the converted and calculated spectrum is poorly coincident.The method of the energy deposition spectra conversion from the diamond microdosimeter to the tissue site of equal size shows relatively good results in most situations. But the deficiency was also found. Therefore, further investigation is needed to improve the reliability of this method.

The result of a meta-analysis is conventionally pictured in the forest plot as a diamond, whose length is the 95% confidence interval (CI) for the summary measure of interest. The Diamond Ratio (DR) is the ratio of the length of the diamond given by a random effects meta-analysis to that given by a fixed effect meta-analysis. The DR is a simple visual indicator of the amount of change caused by moving from a fixed-effect to a random-effects meta-analysis. Increasing values of DR greater than 1.0 indicate increasing heterogeneity relative to the effect variances. We investigate the properties of the DR, and its relationship to four conventional but more complex measures of heterogeneity. We propose for the first time a CI on the DR, and show that it performs well in terms of coverage. We provide example code to calculate the DR and its CI, and to show these in a forest plot. We conclude that the DR is a useful indicator that can assist students and researchers to understand heterogeneity, and to appreciate its extent in particular cases.

Biological scaffolds with hyperbolic surfaces, especially single gyroid and single-diamond structures, have sparked immense interest for creating novel materials due to their extraordinary physical properties. However, the ability of nature to create these unbalanced surfaces has not been achieved in either lyotropic liquid crystals or block copolymer phases due to their thermodynamical instability in these systems. Here, we report the synthesis of a porous silica scaffold with a single-diamond-surface structure fabricated by self-assembly of the poly(ethylene oxide)-b-polystyrene-b-poly(L-lactide) and silica precursors in a mixed solvent of tetrahydrofuran and water. The single-diamond structure with tetrahedral interconnected frameworks was revealed by the electron crystallographic reconstruction. We assume that the formation of single networks is induced by the structural transition and related to the energetic change due to the fluctuations of the Gaussian curvature. This work may provide new insights into these biologically relevant surfaces and related self-assembly systems.

The effect of naphthalene-based additives: naphthalene (NPT), naphthalenesulfonate (NPTS) and hydroxynaphthalenesulfonate (HNPTS) on the kinetics of tin electrodeposition on a boron-doped diamond (BDD) electrode has been studied by means of chronoamperometry and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Potentiostatic current transients in the absence and the presence of naphthalene-based additives are analyzed by using the Scharifker-Hills model. A strong decrease of the kinetics of tin nucleation on BDD was observed in the presence of naphthalene-based additives, NPT showing the smallest effect and HNPTS showing the largest effect. From the long-term Cottrell behavior of the transients, similar values of tin(II) diffusion coefficients were obtained for all additives, suggesting that there is no complexation of Sn(II) by the additives and that the charge-transfer kinetics itself is not substantially influenced by the presence of the additives. In the absence of additives, tin deposition on BDD displays a progressive nucleation and growth mechanism at the least negative potentials, switching to instantaneous nucleation and growth at more negative potential. In the presence of NPTS and HNPTS, progressive nucleation and growth transients are observed. The growth mode results are confirmed by the tin features observed in the scanning electron micrographs. In conclusion, NPT, NPTS and HNPTS mainly decrease the rate of the nucleation of tin deposition, most likely by blocking or reducing access to active nucleation sites. In comparison, ethoxylated alpha-napthalenesulfonic acid (ENSA, a commonly used additive in the tin plating industry) inhibits tin deposition process on BDD even more strongly. These observations show a striking similarity to our previous study of tin deposition on gold electrodes.

Purpose Small animal irradiators are equipped with X-ray beams and cone-collimators with millimeter dimensions to be used in preclinical research. The use of small fields in the kV energy range may require the application of energy-dependent, field-size-dependent or depth-dependent correction factors to the dosimetric data acquired for treatment planning system (TPS) commissioning purposes to obtain accurate dose values. Considering that these corrections are also detector-dependent, the suitability of a synthetic single-crystal diamond detector for small-field relative dosimetry in a preclinical irradiator (220-kVp) was evaluated to avoid the necessity of applying correction factors during TPS commissioning. Methods The detector response was assessed during the transition for field sizes ranging from 20 × 20 mm2 to 3 × 3 mm2 , using the small animal radiation research platform (SARRP). The percentage depth dose distributions (PDDs), lateral profiles and output factors (OFs) were measured. The PDDs for the synthetic diamond detector were compared to the distributions acquired using a small-volume microchamber (0.016 cm3 ) and with Monte Carlo calculations using the MC3D in-house software package. The profiles and OFs were compared to the data from a silicon solid-state detector and to radiochromic film data provided by the manufacturer; for the OF determination, measurements made using a microchamber were added for comparison. The performance of several detectors used as references was previously validated for relative dosimetry in preclinical irradiators. A commercial TPS was commissioned for the factor-based algorithm, using the data acquired with the diamond detector, and no additional correction factors were applied. To verify the performance of the TPS and the accuracy of the dosimetric methodology, radiochromic film irradiation in water was conducted, and two-dimensional (2D) dose distributions in the coronal and axial planes were compared under different gamma criteria. Results Compared with the microchamber and MC3D distributions, the agreement of the PDDs using the synthetic diamond detector was better than 2%. The profile data exhibited very good agreement compared with the data from the silicon detector, with an average and a maximum difference of 0.31 mm and 0.39 mm in the penumbras, respectively. Compared with the data from the radiochromic film, the average and maximum differences were equal to 0.77 mm and 0.89 mm, respectively. Very good agreement, within 1%, was obtained between the OFs measured with the synthetic diamond detector and the radiochromic film, compared only for the cone-collimators. The validation of the TPS commissioning using gamma criteria compared to film showed an average passing rate of 100% and 93.2% with a global gamma criterion of 1 mm/3% for the coronal and axial planes, respectively, including the 3 × 3 mm2 field size and penumbra regions. Conclusions Synthetic diamond is a suitable detector for the complete relative dosimetry of small X-ray fields. The commissioning of the TPS with its own beam dosimetric data exhibited encouraging results even in a 3 × 3 mm2 field and penumbra region. This methodology allows for the prediction of 2D dose distributions with an accuracy in water ranging from 3-5% compared to the 2D distribution from film dosimetry.

Deep-ultraviolet (DUV) nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals are vital to the development of science and state-of-the-art technologies, but the exploration of these important optoelectronic materials is hindered by the contradiction between NLO effect and energy band gap as well as the sensitivity of DUV phase-matching to optical birefringence. Here, in order to achieve a well balanced DUV NLO performance, we chose the diamond-like structure as the prototype template for the material design and synthesized the first DUV NLO hydroxycarbonate crystal, LiZn(OH)CO3 . This compound simultaneously has a wide band gap (>6.53 eV), a strong second harmonic generation response (ca. 3.2×KDP), and a large birefringence (0.147 at 1064 nm) with the shortest DUV phase-matching capability (λPM

Purpose To investigate the response of detectors for proton dosimetry in the presence of magnetic fields. Material and methods Four ionization chambers (ICs), two thimble-type and two plane-parallel-type, and a diamond detector were investigated. All detectors were irradiated with homogeneous single-energy-layer fields, using 252.7 MeV proton beams. A Farmer IC was additionally irradiated in the same geometrical configuration, but with a lower nominal energy of 97.4 MeV. The beams were subjected to magnetic field strengths of 0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, and 1 T produced by a research dipole magnet placed at the room's isocenter. Detectors were positioned at 2 cm water equivalent depth, with their stem perpendicular to both the magnetic field lines and the proton beam's central axis, in the direction of the Lorentz force. Normality and two sample statistical Student's t tests were performed to assess the influence of the magnetic field on the detectors' responses. Results For all detectors, a small but significant magnetic field-dependent change of their response was found. Observed differences compared to the no magnetic field case ranged from +0.5% to -0.7%. The magnetic field dependence was found to be nonlinear and highest between 0.25 and 0.5 T for 252.7 MeV proton beams. A different variation of the Farmer chamber response with magnetic field strength was observed for irradiations using lower energy (97.4 MeV) protons. The largest magnetic field effects were observed for plane-parallel ionization chambers. Conclusion Small magnetic field-dependent changes in the detector response were identified, which should be corrected for dosimetric applications.

The bright colors of Pachyrhynchus weevils originate from complex dielectric nanostructures within their elytral scales. In contrast to previous work exhibiting highly ordered single-network diamond-type photonic crystals, we here show by combining optical microscopy and spectroscopy measurements with 3D FIB tomography that the blue scales of P. congestus mirabilis differ from that of an ordered diamond structure. Through the use of FIB tomography on elytral scales filled with Pt by electron beam-assisted deposition, we reveal that the red scales of this weevil possess a periodic diamond structure, while the network morphology of the blue scales exhibit diamond morphology only on the single scattering unit level with disorder on longer length scales. Full wave simulations performed on the reconstructed volumes indicate that this local order is sufficient to open a partial photonic bandgap even at low dielectric constant contrast between chitin and air in the absence of long-range or translational order. The observation of disordered and ordered photonic crystals within a single organism opens up interesting questions on the cellular origin of coloration and studies on bio-inspired replication of angle-independent colors., 13 pages, 10 figures

Adhesive bond strength at the composite/dentin interface is influenced by various factors, including the etching mode and composite resin type. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of the total-etch and self-etch mode on the microtensile bond strength (μTBS) of conventional and bulk-fill composite to dentin, using the universal adhesive system. Sixty non-carious human teeth were sectioned parallel to their longitudinal axis, using a low-speed diamond saw to obtain a flat dentin surface. According to the etching technique and composite resin type used, teeth were randomly divided into four different groups (n = 15): TC (total-etch/conventional composite), TB (total-etch/bulk-fill composite), SC (self-etch/conventional composite), and SB (self-etch/bulk-fill composite). Cylindric composite build-ups were made with 3M Filtek Z250 and 3M Filtek Bulkfill Posterior, using a plastic mold, 4 mm in diameter and 4 mm in height. The specimens were subjected to the μTBS test in a universal testing machine and failure force was recorded. Failure modes were determined using stereoscopic and scanning electron microscopy. Data were analyzed using the two-way ANOVA and Student's t test. The μTBS was significantly affected by the etching technique. A significant statistical difference was determined between total-etch and self-etch groups, irrespective of the composite resin type used. Higher bond strength was obtained in total-etch groups. The μTBS was not affected by the composite resin type. No significant statistical difference was determined between the conventional and bulk-fill groups, irrespective of the etching-mode.

International audience; In the current context of energetic transition, investigations of alternative complex systems require tools such as scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM), offering interesting opportunities as an electroanalytical technique to evaluate innovative catalysts. Herein, we demonstrate how a judicious choice of probe and substrate materials opens up improved performances to achieve steady‐state measurements for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalytic activity detection through redox competition scanning electrochemical microscopy (RC‐SECM). On the probe side, we show that using gold enhances the stability of the local oxygen concentration detection in comparison to the regularly used platinum one. On the substrate side, we evaluate boron‐doped diamond as an appealing alternative to classical support substrate, that shows a low ORR activity, high stability and very good reusability. This work introduces an alternative approach for quantitative measurements with SECM, improving measurement ease, comfort and reproducibility, thus paving the way towards standardized benchmarking and numerical simulation‐based parameter extraction.

Diamond is a material of choice in the pursuit of integrated quantum photonic technologies. So far, the majority of photonic devices fabricated from diamond, are made from (100)-oriented crystals. In this work, we demonstrate a methodology for the fabrication of optically-active membranes from (111)-oriented diamond. We use a liftoff technique to generate membranes, followed by chemical vapour deposition of diamond in the presence of silicon to generate homogenous silicon vacancy colour centers with emission properties that are superior to those in (100)-oriented diamond. We further use the diamond membranes to fabricate high quality microring resonators with quality factors exceeding ~ 3000. Supported by finite difference time domain calculations, we discuss the advantages of (111) oriented structures as building blocks for quantum nanophotonic devices.

To design pnictide nonlinear optical materials with wide band gap and large second-harmonic generation, the heavy halogen I was introduced into pnictides through anionic aliovalent substitution with diamond-like ZnS as templates. Thus, four excellent halopnictide-based infrared nonlinear optical crystals, MII3 PnI3 (MII =Zn, Cd; Pn=P, As), were obtained. They all exhibited defect diamond-like structures with highly parallel-oriented [MII PnI3 ] mixed-anionic tetrahedral groups, leading to excellent physical properties including wide band gaps (2.38-2.85 eV), large second harmonic generation responses (2.7-5.1×AgGaS2 ), high laser-induced damage thresholds (5.5-10.7×AgGaS2 ), and good IR transparency. In particular, Cd3 PI3 and Cd3 AsI3 achieved phase-matching (Δn=0.035 and 0.031) that their template β-ZnS could not do. Anionic aliovalent substitution provides a feasible strategy to design novel promising halopnictide IR NLO materials.

Diiron(IV)-oxo species are proposed to effect the cleavage of strong C-H bonds by nonheme diiron enzymes such as soluble methane monooxygenase (sMMO) and fatty acid desaturases. However, synthetic mimics of such diiron(IV) oxidants are rare. Herein we report the reaction of (TPA*)FeII (1) (TPA*=tris(3,5-dimethyl-4-methoxypyridyl-2-methyl)amine) in CH3 CN with 4 equiv CAN and 200 equiv HClO4 at 20 °C to form a complex with an [FeIV2 (μ-O)2 ]4+ core. CAN and HClO4 play essential roles in this unprecedented transformation, in which the comproportionation of FeIII -O-CeIV and FeIV =O/Ce4+ species is proposed to be involved in the assembly of the [FeIV2 (μ-O)2 ]4+ core.

Purpose The aim of this work was to characterize the dosimetric properties of the PTW microDiamond (60019) single crystal synthetic diamond detector (DD) in kilovoltage x-ray beams. The following characteristics were addressed in this study: required preirradiation dose, dose-rate linearity, energy dependence, and percent depth dose response of the DD. Methods UWADCL x-ray beams, characterized by NIST-traceable ionization chambers, were used in this study. Preirradiation dose required by the DD, in order to stabilize the detector's response to within 0.1%, was quantitated. Dose-rate dependence was also investigated using the UW250-M and UW50-M beams, where the dose rate was varied by changing the tube current. N k and N D , w calibration coefficients for all the available M series beams at UWADCL were obtained to determine the energy dependence of the DD, Diode E, Diode P, and P11 parallel-plate ionization chamber. A custom-built water tank was utilized to measure the percent depth dose (PDD) response of the DD, Diode E, Diode P, and P11 chamber in UW250-M, UW100-M, and UW50-M beams. The measured PDD response of the detectors was compared with the simulated PDD data using EGSnrc Monte Carlo code. Results A 1.5 Gy dose-to-water or air-kerma was found to be sufficient for the given DD's response to stabilize to within 0.1% in all of the beams used in this study. The dose-rate dependence parameter, Δ, was found to be 1.00 ± 0.02 and 1.016 ± 0.05 for the UW250-M and UW50-M beams, respectively. Relative to the 60 Co calibration coefficients, the DD was found to under-respond relative to calculated absorbed dose to water response and over-respond relative to the calculated air-kerma response in the M-series beams. Agreement of 1.5% was found between the measured PDD values and Monte Carlo simulated PDD values for UW250-M, UW100-M, and UW50-M beams. Conclusions In order to stabilize the response, the DD needs a preirradiation dose, which is unique to every DD. A linear relationship between detector response and dose rate was found within the evaluated uncertainty. An energy dependence of the DD was studied, which is more pronounced in the low-energy beams and can be partially attributed to the metal contact material around the sensitive volume of the DD. Overall, the DD was found to be suitable for kilovoltage x-ray dosimetry.

International audience; Local mechanical properties of submicron features are of particular interest due to their influence on macroscopic material performance and behaviour. This study is focused on local nanomechanical measurements, based on the latest Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) mode, where the peak force set point is finely controlled at each pixel. After probe calibration, we evaluate the impact of spring constant of two AFM hand-crafted natural full diamond tips with steel cantilevers, used for mapping. Based on the fast capture of the cantilever deflection at each pixel and real time force curve analysis in the elastic region, AFM local measured contact moduli mappings of the silica beads ('50 GPa) incorporated in an epoxy resin matrix, are compared with those determined using classical instrumented nanoindentation tests. Our analyses show that with the two AFM probes, without local residual deformation, the high moduli of the silica beads measured with this advanced AFM mode are within the standard deviation of the values determined by classical nanoindentation. Lay Description: The knowledge of material properties at the nanometer scale is a key parameter for well understanding and determining the behavior of material at macroscopic scale. In this paper, we compare two methods (an advanced mode and a classical one) based on the analysis of probes in interaction with the surface of studied material. We focus on a latest developed mode for determining local mechanical properties with a very high spatial resolution. For the advanced mode, we also consider two different hand-crafted probes. Our analyses show that with the high spatial resolution advanced mode, local mechanical properties are well determined. We also highlight the impact of the properties of the used probes for this advanced mode. In a final step, the power of the presented investigation lies in the fact that it does not modify the topography of the surface.

In this paper we present the design and characterization measurements performed on Kinetic Inductance Detectors produced on sapphire and policrystalline diamond substrates. Designed to be part of a nuclear fusion polarimetric diagnostic instrument, the foreseen plasma probing frequency of the final devices is 1.3 THz with a maximum response time under 10 ms and cross-polarization target accuracy of 1$\%$, in accordance with the guidelines of the upcoming ITER reactor \cite{zeeland2013} \cite{Donne2007}. These detectors are based on superconducting micro-resonators that undergo de-tuning upon absorption of radiation. The main characteristics of the devices include polarization sensitiveness and lumped elements multi-pixel configuration produced from photo-lithographed Niobium Nitride (NbN) thin films. The relatively high $T_C$ of bulk NbN ($\sim$16~K) enables operation at liquid helium temperatures, simplifying the setup of the final detection system when compared to the sub-kelvin temperatures employed in astrophysical KID arrays. The DC characterization measurements performed on test strips patterned on the two substrate materials highlighted large differences in the thin films quality, with the superconductor deposited on diamond showing reduced critical temperature, lower \textcolor{red}{critical} current density and increased values of the kinetic inductance compared to the strips on sapphire. This difference is believed to be mainly due to the higher lattice constant and thermal expansion coefficient mismatch between film and substrate in the case of diamond, \textcolor{red}{with the} different surface finish quality of the crystalline samples at our disposal \textcolor{red}{also likely playing a role.} The response to microwave read-out tones of the prototypes obtained from the same films follows a similar behavior, with the devices produced on sapphire generally outperforming those on diamond. Nevertheless, diamond is a promising candidate for this kind of application, \textcolor{red}{especially considering} the advantages given by its radiation hardness. The devices on both substrates showed a response to THz radiation, bolometric in nature, that fulfills the requirement guidelines and represent a good starting point to optimize the design for the application at hand.

PURPOSE To investigate for the first time the potentialities of obtaining microdosimetric measurements in scanned clinical carbon-ion beams using synthetic single crystal diamond detector and to verify the spectral conversion methods. METHODS Microdosimetric measurements were performed at different depths in a water phantom at the therapeutic scanned carbon-ion beam of the National Center of Oncological Hadrontherapy (CNAO) in Pavia, using waterproof encapsulated diamond microdosimeter developed at "Tor Vergata" University. A monoenergetic carbon-ion beam of 195 MeV/μ scanned over a square field of 2 × 2 cm2 was used. Experimental microdosimetric spectra were compared with those obtained with a propane-filled Tissue Equivalent Proportional Counters (TEPCs) microdosimeter in the same facility at the same conditions. To this purpose, the spectra in diamond were converted to the spectra that would have been collected with a propane-filled cylindrical sensitive volume by means of a novel analytic methodology, recently developed at MedAustron. RESULTS The microdosimetric spectra acquired by the diamond microdosimeter show different shapes in the 10 keV µm-1 ÷ 103 keV µm-1 lineal-energy range at different water depths. In spite of the high counting rate, no spectral distortion, due to pile-up events and polarization effects, were observed. The experimental spectra have a low detection threshold of about 6 keV µm-1 due to the electronic noise in the irradiation room. The comparison between the spectra converted to propane from diamond detector and the spectra collected directly with propane-filled TEPC shows a good agreement in the whole lineal-energy range. Furthermore this comparison confirms that diamond detector response is LET independent. The frequency- and dose-mean lineal energy values were also assessed for all spectra. The frequency-mean values obtained with diamond microdosimeter at different depths scales rather well with the absorbed dose values. CONCLUSIONS Microdosimetric characterization of a synthetic single crystal diamond detector in high-energy scanned carbon-ion beams was performed. The results of the present study showed that this detector is suitable for microdosimetry of clinical carbon ion beams. In addition, the good agreement between the converted diamond spectra and those obtained with TEPC provides the first experimental validation of the spectra conversion methodologies as valuable tools for the comparison of spectra collected with different detectors.
