Luminescence thermometry represents a technique of choice for measurements in small objects and imaging of temperature distribution. However, most state-of-the-art luminescent probes are limited in spectral characteristics, brightness, photostability, and sensitivity. Molecular thermometers of the new generation utilizing air and moisture-stable zirconium(IV) pyridinedipyrrolide complexes can address all these limitations. The dyes emit pure thermally activated delayed fluorescence without any prompt fluorescence and show a unique combination of attractive features: a) visible light excitation and emission in the orange/red region, b) high luminescence brightness (quantum yields approximate to 0.5 in toluene and 0.8-1.0 in polystyrene matrix), c) excellent photostability, d) suitability for two-photon excitation and e) mono-exponential decay on the order of tens to hundreds of microseconds with strongly temperature-dependent lifetimes (between -2.5 and -2.9% K-1 in polystyrene at 25 degrees C). Immobilization in gas-blocking polymers yields sensing materials for self-referenced decay time read-out that are manufactured in two common formats: planar optodes and water-dispersible nanoparticles. Positively charged nanoparticles are demonstrated to be suitable for nanothermometry in live cells and multicellular spheroids. Negatively charged nanoparticles represent advanced analytical tools for imaging temperature gradients in samples of small volumes such as microfluidic devices.

A morphology‐based phylogenetic analysis of the tribe Empoascini (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae: Typhlocybinae) is presented for 58 of 83 formerly recognized genera based on 99 morphological characters of adults. The results support excluding the New World Beamerana generic group from Empoascini. The remaining genera of Empoascini were recovered as a monophyletic sister group of Dikraneurini. Previously recognized tribes Jorumini and Helionini are derived from within Empoascini and are considered synonyms of the latter tribe. Three previously recognized informal generic groups, the Empoasca group, Alebroides group and Usharia group were paraphyletic but the Ficiana group was recovered as monophyletic based on five synapomorphies. Genera previously placed in the Alebroides group represent at least six independent lineages, indicating that the hind wing character separating this group from the Empoasca group (CuA and MP veins free) is highly homoplasious. Empoasca (sensu lato) is also paraphyletic. Thus, twelve previously recognized subgenera of Empoasca are elevated to genus status and five species groups of Empoasca from the New World are recognized as separate new genera. Sikkimasca Dworakowska, 1993 is treated as synonym of Marolda Dworakowska, 1977 based on the phylogeny. Biogeographic analysis suggests that Empoascini most likely first evolved in the Oriental region and spread to other biogeographic realms more recently by multiple independent invasions.

Traditional orthopaedic devices do not communicate with physicians or patients post-operatively. After implantation, follow-up of traditional orthopaedic devices is generally limited to episodic monitoring. However, the orthopaedic community may be shifting towards incorporation of smart technology. Smart technology in orthopaedics is a term that encompasses a wide range of potential applications. Smart orthopaedic implants offer the possibility of gathering data and exchanging it with an external reader. They incorporate technology that enables automated sensing, measuring, processing, and reporting of patient or device parameters at or near the implant. While including advanced technology in orthopaedic devices has the potential to benefit patients, physicians, and the scientific community, it may also increase the patient risks associated with the implants. Understanding the benefit-risk profile of new smart orthopaedic devices is critical to ensuring their safety and effectiveness. The 2018 FDA public workshop on orthopaedic sensing, measuring, and advanced reporting technology (SMART) devices was held on April 30, 2018, at the FDA White Oak Campus in Silver Spring, MD with the goal of fostering a collaborative dialogue amongst the orthopaedic community. Workshop attendees discussed four key areas related to smart orthopaedic devices: engineering and technology considerations, clinical and patient perspectives, cybersecurity, and regulatory considerations. The workshop presentations and associated discussions highlighted the need for the orthopaedic community to collectively craft a responsible path for incorporating smart technology in musculoskeletal disease care.

Nanometer-thin rare-earth-transition metal (RE-TM) alloys with precisely controlled compositions and out-of-plane magnetic anisotropy are currently in the focus for ultrafast magnetophotonic applications. However, achieving lateral nanoscale dimensions, crucial for potential device downscaling, while maintaining designable optomagnetic functionality and out-of-plane magnetic anisotropy is extremely challenging. Here we integrate nanosized Tb$_{18}$Co$_{82}$ ferrimagnetic alloys, having strong out-of-plane magnetic anisotropy, within a gold plasmonic nanoantenna array to design micrometer-scale a magnetophotonic crystal that exhibit abrupt and narrow magneto-optical spectral features that are both magnetic field and light incidence direction controlled. The narrow Fano-type resonance arises through the interference of the individual nanoantenna's surface plasmons and a Rayleigh anomaly of the whole nanoantenna array, in both optical and magneto-optical spectra, which we demonstrate and explain using Maxwell-theory simulations. This robust magnetophotonic crystal opens the way for conceptually new high-resolution light incidence direction sensors, as well as for building blocks for plasmon-assisted all-optical magnetization switching in ferrimagnetic RE-TM alloys., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a worldwide disease with a complex aetiology. Both genetic and environmental factors cause a predisposition to AD. DNA methylation may be an additional predisposing factor. The goal of our study was to investigate genome-wide methylation profiles of skin from patients with AD and healthy persons. This case-control study included 12 AD patients and 6 healthy volunteers. DNA methylation levels in skin samples were analysed using the Illumina Infinium HumanMethylation450 BeadChip. We found that the methylation profile of skin from patients with AD was significantly different from that of healthy controls. Differential DNA methylation was observed for genes involved in a number of AD-related processes including regulation of the immune response, activation of lymphocytes, cell proliferation, apoptosis and differentiation of the epidermis. Our study indicates the involvement of epigenetic regulation in the development of atopic dermatitis.
