Abstract Subduction initiation in oceans is key to understanding regional and global plate tectonics and ocean basin dynamics; however, its genetic mechanism is still enigmatic. The most famous model that predicts intraoceanic subduction initiation along transform faults or fracture zones (i.e., the Subduction Initiation Rule) has been widely used to explain arc‐like geochemical signatures within the Neo‐Tethyan ophiolites, but fails to account for the speculation and/or calculation of a sub‐parallel relationship between the Jurassic subduction zones and paleo ridges of the western Neo‐Tethys. Here, we propose a ridge‐parallel detachment fault‐hosted subduction re‐initiation model for the Jurassic western Neo‐Tethys. Based on field geological and geochemical evidence, we show that the Refahiye ophiolite in the İzmir–Ankara–Erzincan suture of northern Turkey has diagnostic characteristics indicative of (ultra)slow seafloor spreading. An (ultra)slow‐spreading nature also characterizes many Neo‐Tethyan ophiolites from the Alps to Southeast Asia, either at mid‐ocean ridges or in suprasubduction zones. Due to its extremely weak nature, detachment faults were probably a key candidate for the Jurassic intraoceanic subduction re‐initiation of the western Neo‐Tethys in response to far‐field compression after its long‐lived northward subduction. This model is applicable to both the Jurassic and Early Cretaceous ophiolites, but is questionable for the Late Cretaceous ophiolites. Its utility deponds on the kinematics of ancient plate boundaries and compositions of ophiolites. The detachment fault‐hosted subduction re‐initiation model can explain the arc‐like geochemical features of the Jurassic western Neo‐Tethyan ophiolites, but its effect on the structure and component of ophiolites is diverse.

Abstract Single‐layered MoS2 is a promising anode material for lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs), sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs), and potassium‐ion batteries (PIBs) due to its high capacity and isotropic ion transport paths. However, the low intrinsic conductivity and easy‐agglomerated feature hamper its applications. Here, a charge‐driven interlayer expansion strategy that Co2+ replaces Mo4+ in the doping form to endow MoS2 layers with negative charges, thus inducing electrostatic repulsion, together with the insertion of gaseous groups, to drive interlayer expansion which once breaks the confinement of interlayer van der Waals force, single‐layered MoS2 is obtained and uniformly dispersed into carbon matrix arising from the transformation of carbonaceous gaseous groups under high vapor pressure, is proposed. Co atom doping helps enhance the intrinsic conductivity of single‐layered MoS2. Carbon matrix effectively prevents agglomeration of single‐layered MoS2. The doped Co atoms can be fully transformed into ultrasmall Co nanoparticles during conversion reaction, which enables strong spin‐polarized surface capacitance and thus significantly boosts ion transport and storage. Consequently, the prepared material delivers superb Li/Na/K‐ion storage performances, which are best in the reported MoS2‐based anodes. The proposed charge‐driven interlayer expansion strategy provides a novel perspective for preparing single‐layered MoS2, which shows huge potential for energy storage.

Abstract The internal structure of oceanic crusts is not well understood due to the limitation of deep drilling. However, that of ophiolites, i.e., on‐land ancient analogs of oceanic lithosphere, could be precisely mapped and measured. The Xigaze ophiolite in Tibet has been regarded as “peculiar”, due to the sheeted sill complex in its upper crust, and non‐sheeted diabase sills/dikes crosscutting its mantle and lower crust, which are geometrically different from the primarily vertical sheeted dike complex. Based on extensive field observations, here we present petrological and geochemical data for the Xigaze ophiolite to decipher the origin of sheeted sill complex and its implications for the construction of oceanic crusts. Diabases in the Xigaze ophiolite could be subdivided into sheeted sills, Group 1 non‐sheeted dikes, and Group 2 non‐sheeted sills, based on their orientations. These diabases cut other lithologies, and hence belong to the latest‐stage products. Based on petrological, geochemical, and structural data, we highlight the important role of detachment fault in the generation of sheeted and non‐sheeted sills. During the formation of oceanic crust, large block exhumation, multi‐stage rotations, and foundering are argued here as key mechanisms for the generation of Xigaze sheeted and non‐sheeted dikes/sills, all of which are in the evolution of detachment fault systems. These processes are also not uncommon for asymmetrical segments at modern slow‐spreading and ultraslow‐spreading ridges, but are rare at symmetrical segments. Due to the evolution of detachment fault, the internal structures of (ultra)slow‐spreading ridges are more complex than those at fast‐spreading ridges.

Summary Renewable and low‐cost lignocellulosic wastes have attractive applications in bioethanol production. The yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae is the most widely used ethanol‐producing microbe; however, its fermentation temperature (30–35°C) is not optimum (40–50°C) for enzymatic hydrolysis in the simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) process. In this study, we successfully performed an SSF process at 42°C from a high solid loading of 20% (w/v) acid‐impregnated steam explosion (AISE)‐treated rice straw with low inhibitor concentrations (furfural 0.19 g l−1 and acetic acid 0.95 g l−1) using an isolate Pichia kudriavzevii SI, where the ethanol titre obtained (33.4 gp l−1) was nearly 39% greater than that produced by conventional S. cerevisiae BCRC20270 at 30°C (24.1 gp l−1). In addition, P. kudriavzevii SI exhibited a high conversion efficiency of > 91% from enzyme‐saccharified hydrolysates of AISE‐treated plywood chips and sugarcane bagasse, although high concentrations of furaldehydes, such as furfural 1.07–1.21 g l−1, 5‐hydroxymethyl furfural 0.20−0.72 g l−1 and acetic acid 4.80–7.65 g l−1, were present. This is the first report of ethanol fermentation by P. kudriavzevii using various acid‐treated lignocellulosic feedstocks without detoxification or added nutrients. The multistress‐tolerant strain SI has greater potential than the conventional S. cerevisiae for use in the cellulosic ethanol industry.

Recent studies have yielded conflicting results regarding the ability of technetium-99m dimercaptosuccinic acid (99mTc-DMSA) renal scans for identifying high-grade vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) in children with a first febrile urinary tract infection (UTI). This study aimed to reevaluate the effectiveness of 99mTc-DMSA renal scans for selective voiding cystourethrography (VCUG) in children with a first febrile UTI. The medical records of children aged ≤ 5 years who were admitted with a first febrile UTI were retrospectively reviewed. Ultrasonography (US) and DMSA renal scans were performed within 3–5 days after admission, and VCUG was performed 7–10 days after antibiotics treatment. A total of 653 children were enrolled for analysis, including 579 patients aged < 2 years (Group A) and 74 patients aged 2–5 years (Group B). In Group A, DMSA scans were abnormal for 346 patients (59.8%), and normal for 233 patients (40.2%). This study designed a biomimetic implant for reducing healing time and achieving early osseointegration to create an active surface. Bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) is a strong regulator protein in osteogenic pathways. Due to hardly maintaining BMP-2 biological function and specificity, BMP-2 efficient delivery on implant surfaces is the main challenge for the clinic application. In this study, a novel method for synthesizing functionalized silane film for superior modification with BMP-2 on titanium surfaces is proposed. Three groups were compared with and without BMP-2 on modified titanium surfaces in vitro and in vivo: mechanical grinding; electrochemical modification through potentiostatic anodization (ECH); and sandblasting, alkali heating, and etching (SMART). Cell tests indicated that the ECH and SMART groups with BMP-2 markedly promoted D1 cell activity and differentiation compared with the groups without BMP-2. Moreover, the SMART group with a BMP-2 surface markedly promoted early alkaline phosphatase expression in the D1 cells compared with the other surface groups. Compared with these groups in vivo, SMART silaning with BMP-2 showed superior bone quality and created contact areas between implant and surrounding bones. The SMART group with BMP-2 could promote cell mineralization in vitro and osseointegration in vivo, indicating potential clinical use.

A wet or bloody tap is an inevitable complication while performing epidural block. The influence of different catheters on the incidence of intravascular cannulation during epidural catheterization has not been reported. We observed an initial, relatively different incidence of intravascular cannulation during the placement of different sorts of epidural catheter; hence, a retrospective review was conducted to explore the possible association. We reviewed 1-year interval anesthetic records of 1117 patients who had undergone epidural anesthesia or received patient-controlled epidural analgesia. Epidural catheter placement was performed by a loss of resistance technique with an 18-G Tuohy needle in lateral position. Patients were divided into two groups according to the different types of epidural catheters used (Perifix One, n=590; Perifix Standard, n=527). Primary outcome measurement was the incidence of intravascular injection. Other analyzed outcomes included dura puncture, failure rate, and low back pain. The incidence of epiduralintravascular cannulation was significantly lower using the Perifix One catheter (1.5%; 9/590) than using the Perifix Standard (4.6%; 24/527), p=0.003. The dura puncture rate did not differ significantly between the Perifix One (1.9%; 11/590) and the Perifix Standard (2.5%; 13/527), p=0.49. Failure rates and low back pain incidence were also comparable between the two groups. Application of the soft epidural catheter (Perifix One) may reduce the incidence of epidural intravascular cannulation. We suggest the use of Perifix One catheter instead of Perifix Standard catheter in daily practice.

Intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM) is widely used in thyroid surgery. This study aimed to investigate the influence of neck extension on electromyographic (EMG) endotracheal tube displacement and to determine the necessity of routinely checking the final electrode position after the patient had been fully positioned. A consecutive 220 patients undergoing thyroidectomy were enrolled. All patients were intubated with the EMG endotracheal tube under direct laryngoscopy. The electrode position and tube displacement were routinely checked and measured by laryngofiberoscopy before and after patient positioning. The patients were divided into two groups. In Group I (n=110), the EMG tube was taped and fixed to the right mouth angle before full neck extension. In Group II (n=110), the EMG tube was disconnected from the circuit tube and was not taped until full neck extension. In all patients, we ensured that the final electrode position was the optimal position with laryngofiberoscopic examination. The tube displacement after neck extension ranged from 16 mm upward to 4 mm downward in Group I and from 12 mm upward to 5 mm downward in Group II. The rate of tube displacement greater than 10 mm was 12.7% in Group I and 3.6% in Group II. Successful monitoring was achieved in all patients after the final optimal position of electrodes was ensured routinely. The electrode position can be severely displaced after the patient has been fully positioned. Verification of ideal position of electrodes before the beginning of the operation is a necessary step to guarantee functional intraoperative neuromonitoring.

Thiamylal is widely used for procedural sedation in emergency departments (ED); however, there are limited safety data for doses of thiamylal > 5 mg/kg in children. We investigated whether intravenous thiamylal in combination with local anesthetics is safe and effective for pediatric procedural sedation in the ED and to identify the association between increasing doses thiamylal and adverse events. Between July 2004 and June 2008, 227 children who underwent procedural sedation met the inclusion criteria, including 105 males (46.3%) and 122 females (53.7%). Facial laceration was the most common indication for procedural sedation. All children received an intravenous injection of thiamylal, with a loading dose of 5 mg/kg. Eighty-one children (35.7%) received a supplemental dose of 2.5 mg/kg thiamylal because of inadequate sedation. Of these, 27 (11.9%) received a second supplemental dose of 2.5 mg/kg because of inadequate sedation. Sixty-six patients (29.1%) experienced 75 mild and self-resolving adverse events, and most of which (15/75; 20%) were drowsiness. Four (1.8%) patients experienced oxygen saturation below 96%, which was related to the supplemental dose of thiamylal (p = 0.002). No children suffered from any lasting or potentially serious complications. Our results indicate that intravenous thiamylal in combination with local anesthetic infiltration is a well tolerated for therapeutic procedures in the ED. Thiamylal offers rapid onset of sedation without compromising the patient's cardiorespiratory function during pediatric procedural sedation.

Femoral nerve block (FNB) is by far the most useful lower extremity regional anesthetic technique for the anesthesiologist, and high-resolution ulrrasonography is a useful tool with which to guide the performance of FNB. However, the relationships between the femoral nerve and the femoral artery in different lower extremity positions have rarely been discussed. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relative positions of the femoral nerve and artery at different lateral rotational angles of the lower extremities using ultrasonographic imaging. We enrolled 41 healthy volunteers in this study Two-dimensional ultrasonographic images of the femoral nerve were obtained using an ultrasound unit, in the inguinal crease, for four positions of the bilateral lower extremities: 0°, 15°, 30° and 45° lateral rotation of each extremity. The following assessments were made in each position: minimal skin-to-nerve distance (SN) and deviation of nerve-to-landmark (femoral artery pulsation) horizontal distance (NF). A trend towards lateral rotation of both lower extremities was identified. The Pearson correlation values between rotational degree to SN and rotational degree to NF were −0.216 and 0.430, with p values of 0.001 and less than 0.001, respectively. Body mass index had a good correlation (r=0.76-0.78) with SN. The results of our ultrasound study revealed that the more lateral the rotation of both lower extremities, the closer the femoral nerve was to the skin and the farther away it was from the femoral artery. In order to increase the success rate and decrease the rate of complications, a suggested lateral 45° rotation of both lower extremities is strongly recommended when performing FNB using the peripheral nerve stimulator technique or the field block technique. In any situation, individual ultrasound guidance is recommended for FNB whenever possible.
