Body pigmentation is an evolutionarily diversified and ecologically relevant trait with substantial variation within and between species, and important roles in animal survival and reproduction. Insect pigmentation, in particular, provides some of the most compelling examples of adaptive evolution, including its ecological significance and genetic bases. Pigmentation includes multiple aspects of color and color pattern that may vary more or less independently, and can be under different selective pressures. We decompose Drosophila thorax and abdominal pigmentation, a valuable eco‐evo‐devo model, into distinct measurable traits related to color and color pattern. We investigate intra‐ and interspecific variation for those traits and assess its different sources. For each body part, we measured overall darkness, as well as four other pigmentation properties distinguishing between background color and color of the darker pattern elements that decorate each body part. By focusing on two standard D. melanogaster laboratory populations, we show that pigmentation components vary and covary in distinct manners depending on sex, genetic background, and temperature during development. Studying three natural populations of D. melanogaster along a latitudinal cline and five other Drosophila species, we then show that evolution of lighter or darker bodies can be achieved by changing distinct component traits. Our results paint a much more complex picture of body pigmentation variation than previous studies could uncover, including patterns of sexual dimorphism, thermal plasticity, and interspecific diversity. These findings underscore the value of detailed quantitative phenotyping and analysis of different sources of variation for a better understanding of phenotypic variation and diversification, and the ecological pressures and genetic mechanisms underlying them., We characterize genetic and environmental sources of intra‐ and interspecies variation in distinct quantitative properties of Drosophila body pigmentation, of interest in eco‐evo‐devo studies.

Background and objective Asthma guidelines emphasize the importance of assessing lung function and symptoms. The forced oscillation technique (FOT) and its longitudinal relationship with spirometry and symptoms are unresolved. We examined concordance between longitudinal spirometry, FOT and symptom control, and determined FOT limits of agreement in stable asthma. Methods Over a 3-year period, adults with asthma attending a tertiary clinic completed the asthma control test (ACT), fraction of exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO), FOT and spirometry. Analysis included between-visit concordance for significant change using Cohen's kappa (κ) and stable asthma FOT limits of agreement. Results Data (n = 186) from 855 visits (mean ± SD 4.6 ± 3.0 visits), 114 ± 95 days apart, were analysed. Between-visit concordance was moderate between reactance at 5 Hz (X5) and forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1 ) (κ = 0.34, p = 0.001), and weak between ACT and FEV1 (κ = 0.18, p = 0.001). Change in FeNO did not correlate with lung function or ACT (κ 0.1). Stable asthma between visits (n = 75; 132 visits) had reduced lung function variability, but comparable concordance to the entire cohort. Limits of agreement for FEV1 (0.42 L), resistance at 5 Hz (2.06 cm H2 O s L-1 ) and X5 (2.75 cm H2 O s L-1 ) in stable asthma were at least twofold greater than published values in health. Conclusion In adults with asthma, there is moderate concordance between longitudinal change in FOT and spirometry. Both tests relate poorly to changes in asthma control, highlighting the need for multi-modal assessment in asthma rather than symptoms alone. The derivation of longitudinal FOT limits of agreement will assist in its clinical interpretation.

Marine heatwaves (MHWs) are emerging as forceful agents of ecosystem change and are increasing in frequency, duration, and intensity with climate change. During MHWs, physiological thresholds of native species may be exceeded while the performance of invasive species with warm affinities may be enhanced. As a consequence, MHWs could significantly alter an ecosystem's invasive dynamics, but such interactions are poorly understood. Following a 10-d acclimation period, we investigated the physiological resistance and resilience of an intertidal rock pool assemblage invaded by the seaweed Sargassum muticum to realistic 14-d marine heatwave scenarios (+1.5°C, +2.0°C, +3.5°C) followed by a 14-d recovery period. We conducted mesocosm experiments in both summer and winter to investigate temporal variability of MHWs. MHW treatments had clear negative impacts on native seaweeds (Fucus serratus and Chondrus crispus) while enhancing the performance of S. muticum. This pattern was consistent across season indicating that acclimation to cooler ambient temperatures results in winter MHWs having significant impacts on native species. As climate warming advances, this may ultimately lead to changes in competitive interactions and potentially exclusion of native species, while invasive species may proliferate and become more conspicuous within temperate rocky shore environments.

Anthropogenic climate change is driving the redistribution of species at a global scale. For marine species, populations at trailing edges often live very close to their upper thermal limits and, as such, poleward range contractions are one of the most pervasive effects of ongoing and predicted warming. However, the mechanics of processes driving such contractions are poorly understood. Here, we examined the response of the habitat forming kelp, Laminaria digitata, to realistic terrestrial heatwave simulations akin to those experienced by intertidal populations persisting at the trailing range edge in the northeast Atlantic (SW England). We conducted experiments in both spring and autumn to determine temporal variability in the effects of heatwaves. In spring, heatwave scenarios caused minimal stress to L. digitata but in autumn all scenarios tested resulted in tissue being nonviable by the end of each assay. The effects of heatwave scenarios were only apparent after consecutive exposures, indicating erosion of resilience over time. Monthly field surveys corroborated experimental evidence as the prevalence of bleaching (an indication of physiological stress and tissue damage) in natural populations was greatest in autumn and early winter. Overall, our data showed that L. digitata populations in SW England persist close to their upper physiological limits for emersion stress in autumn. As the intensity of extreme warming events is likely to increase with anthropogenic climate change, thermal conditions experienced during periods of emersion will soon exceed physiological thresholds and will likely induce widespread mortality and consequent changes at the population level.

Demographic theory and data have emphasized that nonheritable variation in individual frailty enables selection within cohorts, affecting the dynamics of a population while being invisible to its evolution. Here, we include the component of individual variation in longevity or viability which is nonheritable in simple bacterial growth models and explore its ecological and evolutionary impacts. First, we find that this variation produces consistent trends in longevity differences between bacterial genotypes when measured across stress gradients. Given that direct measurements of longevity are inevitably biased due to the presence of this variation and ongoing selection, we propose the use of the trend itself for obtaining more exact inferences of genotypic fitness. Second, we show how species or strain coexistence can be enabled by nonheritable variation in longevity or viability. These general conclusions are likely to extend beyond bacterial systems.

Background Esophageal atresia (EA) with tracheoesophageal fistula is usually repaired in the neonatal period. Preferential ventilation through the fistula can lead to gastric distension. Bronchoscopy has a role in defining the site and size of the fistula, and may be carried out by the surgeon or the anesthetist. The use of bronchoscopy varies across different institutions. Methods This is a multicenter case note review of infants with EA with tracheoesophageal fistula who underwent surgery between January 2010 and December 2015. This retrospective audit aims primarily to document the use of bronchoscopy during open and thoracoscopic repair at a selection of United Kingdom centers. Respiratory complications, that is relating to airway management, the respiratory system, and difficulty with ventilation, at induction and during surgery, are recorded. The range of techniques for anesthesia and analgesia in these centers is noted. Results Bronchoscopy was carried out in 52% of cases. The incidence of respiratory complications was 7% at induction and 21% during surgery. Thoracoscopic repair usually took longer. One center used high-frequency oscillatory ventilation, on an elective basis during thoracoscopic repair, to facilitate surgical access and address concerns about hypoxemia and hypercarbia. Conclusion The use of bronchoscopy varies considerably between institutions. Infants undergoing tracheoesophageal fistula repair are at risk of perioperative respiratory morbidity. The advent of thoracoscopic repair has introduced further variation.

Severe asthma is defined by the high treatment requirements to partly or fully control the clinical manifestations of disease. It remains a problem worldwide with a large burden for individuals and health services. The key to improving targeted treatments, reducing disease burden and improving patient outcomes is a better understanding of the pathophysiology and mechanisms of severe disease. The heterogeneity, complexity and difficulties in undertaking clinical studies in severe asthma remain challenges to achieving better understanding and better outcomes. In this review, we focus on the structural, mechanical and inflammatory abnormalities that are relevant in severe asthma.

Climate change is driving the redistribution of species at a global scale and documenting and predicting species' responses to warming is a principal focus of contemporary ecology. When interpreting and predicting their responses to warming, species are generally treated as single homogenous physiological units. However, local adaptation and phenotypic plasticity can result in intraspecific differences in thermal niche. Therefore, population loss may also not only occur from trailing edges. In species with low dispersal capacity this will have profound impacts for the species as a whole, as local population loss will not be offset by immigration of warm tolerant individuals. Recent evidence from terrestrial forests has shown that incorporation of intraspecific variation in thermal niche is vital to accurately predicting species responses to warming. However, marine macrophytes (i.e. seagrasses and seaweeds) that form some of the world's most productive and diverse ecosystems have not been examined in the same context. We conducted a literature review to determine how common intraspecific variation in thermal physiology is in marine macrophytes. We find that 90% of studies identified (n = 42) found clear differences in thermal niche between geographically separated populations. Therefore, non-trailing edge populations may also be vulnerable to future warming trends and given their limited dispersal capacity, such population loss may not be offset by immigration. We also explore how next generation sequencing (NGS) is allowing unprecedented mechanistic insight into plasticity and adaptation. We conclude that in the ‘genomic era’ it may be possible to link understanding of plasticity and adaptation at the genetic level through to changes in populations providing novel insights on the redistribution of populations under future climate change.

Background and objective Smokers develop respiratory symptoms and peripheral airway dysfunction even when spirometry is preserved. Multiple breath nitrogen washout (MBNW) and impulse oscillometry system (IOS) are potentially useful measures of peripheral airway function but they have not been compared in such subjects. We hypothesized that MBNW and IOS are jointly abnormal in smokers with normal spirometry and that these abnormalities relate to respiratory symptoms. Methods Eighty smokers with normal spirometry completed a symptom questionnaire, had ventilation heterogeneity in diffusion (Sacin) and convection-dependent (Scond) airways and trapped gas volume at functional residual capacity as a percentage of vital capacity (%VtrFRC/VC) measured by MBNW. Respiratory resistance and reactance at 5 and 20 Hz were measured using IOS. Results Respiratory symptoms were reported in 55 (68%) subjects. Forty (50%) subjects had at least one abnormal MBNW parameter, predominantly in Sacin. Forty-one (51%) subjects had at least one abnormal IOS parameter, predominantly in resistance. Sixty-one (76%) subjects had an abnormality in either MBNW or IOS. Chronic bronchitis symptoms were associated with an increased Scond, while wheeze was associated with lower spirometry and an increased resistance. Abnormalities in MBNW and IOS parameters were unrelated to each other. Conclusions Respiratory symptoms and peripheral airway dysfunction are common in smokers with normal spirometry. Symptoms of chronic bronchitis related to conductive airway abnormalities, while wheeze was related to spirometry and IOS. The clinical significance of abnormalities in peripheral airway function in smokers remains undetermined.

Asthma is a chronic respiratory disease characterized by respiratory symptoms, airway inflammation, airway obstruction and airway hyper-responsiveness. Asthma is common and directly affects 10% of Australians, 1-5% of adults in Asia and 300 million people worldwide. It is a heterogeneous disorder with many clinical, molecular, biological and pathophysiological phenotypes. Current management strategies successfully treat the majority of patients with asthma who have access to them. However, there is a subset of an estimated 5-10% of patients with asthma who have severe disease and are disproportionately impacted by symptoms, exacerbations and overall illness burden. The care required for this relatively small proportion of patients is also significant and has a major impact on the healthcare system. A number of new therapies that hold promise for severe asthma are currently in clinical trials or are entering the Australian and international market. However, recognition of severe asthma in clinical practice is variable, and there is little consensus on the best models of care or how to integrate emerging and often costly therapies into current practice. In this article, we report on roundtable discussions held with severe asthma experts from around Australia, and make recommendations about approaches for better patient diagnosis and assessment. We assess current models of care for patient management and discuss how approaches may be optimized to improve patient outcomes. Finally, we propose mechanisms to assess new therapies and how to best integrate these approaches into future treatment.

Background and objective Cigarette smoke exposure increases airway smooth muscle (ASM) contractility. Abnormalities in peripheral airway function in smokers with normal spirometry could be due to the effects of ASM tone. We aimed to determine the contribution of ASM tone to peripheral airway function in smokers with normal spirometry from the response to bronchodilator (BD). Methods Ventilation heterogeneity in peripheral conductive (Scond) and acinar (Sacin) airways were measured in 50 asymptomatic smokers and 20 never-smokers using multiple breath nitrogen washout, before and 20 min after inhalation of 200 µg salbutamol and 80 µg ipratropium bromide. Z-scores were calculated to define abnormality in Sacin and Scond. Results Nineteen smokers had abnormal Sacin, and 12 had abnormal Scond; 7 had abnormalities in both. After BD, Sacin improved in smokers with normal Sacin (6.5 ± 15.9%, P = 0.02), smokers with abnormal Sacin (9.2 ± 16.9%, P = 0.03) and in control subjects (11.7 ± 18.2%, P = 0.01), with no differences in improvements between groups. Sacin remained abnormal in 15/19 smokers and their post-BD values correlated with smoking exposure (r = 0.53, P = 0.02). After BD, Scond improved in smokers with abnormal Scond (28.3 ± 15.9%, P = 0.002) and normalized in 9/12 subjects, but not in those with normal Scond (0.25 ± 32.7%, P = 0.44) or control subjects (−1.7 ± 21.2%, P = 0.64). Conclusion In smokers with normal spirometry, abnormal conductive airway function could be attributed to increased bronchomotor tone. In contrast, bronchomotor tone in acinar airways is unaffected by smoking and functional abnormality. There may be different causal mechanisms underlying acinar and conductive airway abnormalities in smokers with normal spirometry.

Objective To determine whether there is an association between thromboelastography (TEG) data and necropsy evidence of thrombosis in a cohort of critically ill dogs. Design Retrospective study (2005–2010). Setting University teaching hospital. Animals Thirty-nine client-owned critically ill dogs for which TEG was performed within 7 days of complete necropsy. Interventions None. Measurements and Main Results Thrombi were found in 26 (67%) dogs. Spayed females (n = 20) were significantly more likely to have thrombosis (P = 0.0127). No significant association was found between presence of thrombosis and any TEG parameter, the calculated coagulation index, results of coagulation testing, type of vascular access, or clinical diagnosis. D-dimers were significantly higher in dogs with thrombosis (P = 0.0207) and a weak positive correlation was found between D-dimer value and number of sites of thrombosis (ρ = 0.18, P = 0.0045). Dogs with WBC > 16 × 103/μL were more likely to have thrombosis compared to others (odds ratio 5.56, 95% confidence interval 1.2–25.7, P = 0.025). Conclusions This study found no association between any TEG parameter and the presence of thrombosis on postmortem examination.

We conducted this study to determine if placement of infraclavicular catheters guided by ultrasound is quicker than placement guided by nerve stimulation. Infraclavicular brachial plexus catheters were inserted in 210 randomly allocated patients who were scheduled for elective hand or elbow surgery. Needle and catheter placement was guided by ultrasound (n = 105) or by nerve stimulation (n = 105). The primary outcome was time to sensory block success. Success rate was similar between the two techniques (83.2% vs 81.4%, p = 0.738). However, placement of ultrasound-guided catheters took less time (7.2 [2.5] vs 9.6 [3.6] min, p < 0 .001). Pain and satisfaction scores, and incidence of nerve deficit, were also similar with both techniques.

The purpose of the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand guidelines is to provide simple, practical evidence-based recommendations for the acute use of oxygen in adults in clinical practice. The intended users are all health professionals responsible for the administration and/or monitoring of oxygen therapy in the management of acute medical patients in the community and hospital settings (excluding perioperative and intensive care patients), those responsible for the training of such health professionals, and both public and private health care organizations that deliver oxygen therapy.

Background and objectiveSmall airway dysfunction is associated with asthma severity and control, but its association with airway inflammation is unknown. The aim was to determine the association between sputum inflammatory cells and the site of small airway dysfunction, measured by multiple breath nitrogen washout in convection-dependent (Scond) and more peripheral diffusion-dependent (Sacin) airways. MethodsFifty-three (20-67 years) subjects with asthma on inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) treatment were characterized by spirometry, Scond, Sacin and induced sputum differential counts. %Predicted values for Scond and Sacin were calculated from published reference equations to adjust for the effects of age. Univariate correlations were assessed using the Spearman test. Multivariate linear regressions were performed to account for potential confounders, including age, gender, disease duration, body mass index and ICS dose. ResultsSacin (%predicted) correlated significantly with neutrophil% (r(s)=0.33, P=0.02), ICS dose (r(s)=-0.28, P=0.04) and age (r(s)=0.27, P=0.05). In multivariate analysis, Sacin related only to neutrophil% (adjusted R-2=0.18, P=0.001). Scond (%predicted) correlated significantly only with eosinophil% (r(s)=0.39, P=0.004). There was a trend for a negative relationship with ICS dose (r(s)=-0.26, P=0.06). In multivariate analysis, Scond related to eosinophil% and ICS dose independently (adjusted R-2=0.12, P=0.02). ConclusionsAcinar and conductive airway dysfunction is associated with different inflammatory profiles in asthmatic airways, independently of the effects of age and disease duration. The association between acinar airway dysfunction and neutrophilic airway inflammation may have implications for asthma treatment. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to determine the association between sputum inflammatory cells and small airway dysfunction in asthma. This is the first report of an association between small airway dysfunction and neutrophilic airway inflammation. The results may have implications for asthma treatment.

Objective To identify mortality risk factors, determine mortality rate, and to describe the treatment, incidence, and type of organ dysfunction in dogs with severe bite wounds. Design Retrospective case study from 2000 to 2009. Setting University veterinary teaching hospital. Animals Ninety-four dogs admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) with bite wounds. Interventions None. Measurements and Main Results In all dogs, physical parameters, diagnostic testing, surgery and anesthesia timing, and treatment details were recorded at presentation and during ICU hospitalization. Background Accumulating evidence suggests that transfusion of packed red blood cells (PRBCs) stored for >14 days is associated with increased rates of sepsis, multiple organ dysfunction, and mortality in human patients. Objective To determine if duration of PRBC storage has an effect on morbidity and mortality in dogs after transfusion. Animals Dogs admitted to the Matthew J Ryan Veterinary Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Methods A retrospective case review of dogs identified through blood bank logbooks that received PRBC transfusions (minimum, 5 mL/kg) between 2001 and 2010. Dogs were categorized according to major cause of anemia (eg, hemorrhage, hemolysis, ineffective erythropoiesis) for analysis. Results A total of 3,095 dogs received 5,412 PRBC units. Longer duration of PRBC storage was associated with development of new or progressive coagulation failure (P = .001) and thromboembolic disease (P = .005). There was no association between duration of PRBC storage and survival for all dogs overall. However, a logistic regression model indicated that for dogs with hemolysis, 90% of which had immune-mediated hemolytic anemia, longer duration of PRBC storage was a negative risk factor for survival. For every 7 day increase in storage, there was a 0.79 lesser odds of 30 day survival (95% CI, 0.64–0.97; P = .024). Conclusions and Clinical Importance Duration of PRBC storage does not appear to be a major contributing factor to mortality in the overall canine population. However, longer duration of PRBC storage may negatively impact outcome in dogs with immune-mediated hemolytic anemia, thus warranting further investigation with prospective studies.

Background Myocardial injury, detected by cardiac troponin I and T (cTnI and cTnT), has been associated with long-term death in the noncardiac human intensive care unit (ICU). Hypothesis Presence of myocardial injury predicts 1-year case fatality in critically ill dogs with systemic inflammation. Animals Thirty-eight dogs with evidence of systemic inflammation and no primary cardiac disease. Methods Prospective cohort study. In dogs admitted to the ICU with evidence of systemic inflammation, blood samples were obtained at ICU admission for measurement of cTnI and cTnT, and cTnI was measured once daily during ICU hospitalization. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were used to examine prognostic capacity of admission cTnI, admission cTnT, and peak cTnI concentrations. Results One-year case fatality rate was 47% (18/38 dogs). Admission cTnI concentrations were (median [range]) 0.48 [0.004–141.50] ng/mL, and peak cTnI concentrations were 1.21 [0.021–141.50] ng/mL. Background/Aims To determine the effect of introducing a decision rule on the duration of continuous cardiac monitoring (CCM) for patients with suspected acute coronary syndrome in an adult emergency department (ED). Methods This was a retrospective observational study of 220 patients with suspected acute coronary syndrome made up of two consecutive cohorts collected before and after introduction in July 2010 of a decision rule that made use of a new high-sensitivity troponin T assay. The primary outcome was median CCM duration in the ED (CCMED). Secondary outcomes were median duration of CCM in the first 24 h, rate of adverse events, proportion of patients after the intervention who had the rule adhered to, and estimated median CCMED had the decision rule been adhered to by all patients. Results The decision rule was adhered to in 59.3% (95% confidence interval 49.8–68.1) of patients post-intervention. There was no statistically or clinically significant difference in median CCMED before (240 min, interquartile range 156–313) and after (230 min interquartile range 145–353) introduction of the decision rule (P = 0.74) nor in CCM in the first 24 h (908 min vs 929 min). Seven (3.2%, 95% confidence interval 1.4–6.6) adverse events occurred overall. All three patients with adverse events after the intervention were monitored in ED according to the decision rule. Conclusion Introduction of this decision rule did not decrease the median CCMED. All adverse events after the intervention occurred in appropriately monitored patients, including patients with initially negative high-sensitivity troponin T, suggesting that the decision rule would not compromise patient safety.

Although most diffusion research focuses on firms adopting new practices to maintain their legitimacy, this paper examines a setting in which firms adopted a controversial practice to defend themselves against challenges relating to corporate deviance. We argue that understanding defensive adoption requires attending to both the dynamics of organizational stigma and impression management, and test our theoretical claims by analysing the diffusion of an accounting practice, stock option expensing (SOPEX), following the Enron scandal. We first provide evidence that the media and shareholder activists transformed the practice into a defensive device by theorizing it as a solution to problems relating to corporate fraud and corporate governance. Using event history analysis, we then show that corporations that became targets of stigma-inducing threats were more likely to adopt SOPEX and that the media were a key force channelling these threats.

A hypothesis that mutability evolves to facilitate evolutionary adaptation is dismissed by many biologists. Their skepticism is based on a theoretical expectation that natural selection must minimize mutation rates. That view, in turn, is historically grounded in an intuitive presumption that "the vast majority of mutations are harmful." But such skepticism is surely misplaced. Several highly mutagenic genomic patterns, including simple sequence repeats, and transposable elements, are integrated into an unexpectedly large proportion of functional genetic loci. Because alleles arising within such patterns can retain an intrinsic propensity toward a particular style of mutation, natural selection that favors any such allele can indirectly favor the site's mutability as well. By exploiting patterns that have produced beneficial alleles in the past, indirect selection can encourage mutation within constraints that reduce the probability of deleterious effect, thereby shaping implicit "mutation protocols" that effectively promote evolvability.

The morphology of neocortical pyramidal neurons is not only highly characteristic but also displays an intrinsic diversity that renders each neuron morphologically unique. We investigated the significance of this intrinsic morphological diversity in in silico networks composed of thick-tufted layer 5 (TTL5) pyramidal neurons, by comparing the in silico and in vitro properties of TTL5 synaptic connections. The synaptic locations of in silico connections were determined by placing 3D reconstructed TTL5 neurons randomly in a volume equivalent to that of layer 5 in the juvenile rat somatosensory cortex and using a 'collision-detection' algorithm to identify the incidental loci of axo-dendritic overlap. The activation time of the modelled synapses and their biophysical properties were characterized based on experimental measurements. We found that the anatomical loci of synapses and the physiological properties of the somatically recorded EPSPs closely matched those recorded experimentally without the need for any fine-tuning. Furthermore, perturbations to both the physiological or anatomical parameters of the model did not alter the average physiological properties of the population of modelled synaptic connections. This microcircuit-level robust behaviour was due to the intrinsic diversity of the morphology of pyramidal neurons in the microcircuit. We conclude that synaptic transmission in a network of TTL5 neurons is highly invariant across microcircuits suggesting that intrinsic diversity is a mechanism to ensure the same average synaptic properties in different animals of the same species. Finally, we show that the average physiological properties of the TTL5 microcircuit are surprisingly robust to anatomical and physiological perturbations also partly due to the intrinsic diversity of pyramidal neuron morphology.

Pulmonary function testing is part of routine clinical practice in respiratory medicine. It is based around spirometry, which will remain the central measurement of lung function given its prognostic significance and its integral role in defining severity of airways disease. However, there is an increasing body of evidence from studies using new methods of lung function measurement which are providing new insights into pathophysiology of disease. This body of data is forming a basis for their future clinical role, once the economics of producing the relevant devices becomes attractive. The forced oscillation technique and multiple breath nitrogen washout are currently the most commonly used of the newer lung function techniques, which are refinements of long-established techniques. Optical coherence tomography, optical reflection, electrical impedance and vibration response imaging have arisen by development of novel devices. The recent use of these techniques is reviewed.

Fifteen years after the term ‘ecohydrology’ came into use to describe integrative research spanning the two parent disciplines, we discuss methodological traditions of the parent disciplines and assess trends in the methodologies utilized in the young hybrid field of ecohydrology. In particular, we explore whether the marriage between the disciplines is built on a marriage of methodological strengths from the parent fields or a marriage of convenient arenas of methodological overlap. In surveying 267 research articles from January 1996 to June 2010, we found that very few studies integrated the strongest methodological approaches from both parent disciplines. Hydrological strengths in the form of modelling studies are much more prevalent than ecological strengths of manipulative experimentation and hypothesis testing, and the two approaches are almost entirely decoupled in ecohydrological studies. Thus, there remains great opportunity to leverage the strengths of ecological and hydrological traditions to more aggressively build our understanding of coupled ecological and hydrological system functions. Although most authors have recognized five or fewer genera in the Heteroceridae, the most recent revision divided the heterocerids into 19 genera. Under this system most males can be identified to genus level based on genital morphology, but clearly females cannot be identified to genus level by this method. We conducted the first phylogenetic analysis of the family using separate and combined 28S and EF-1α sequence data, with the specific aim of testing generic limits and determining whether former family classifications are natural. We found that Tropicus Pacheco forms a strongly supported sister group to all other Heteroceridae. Augyles s.l. Schiodte (monophyly unresolved) is nested between Tropicus and a large terminal clade of four monophyletic species groups of Heterocerus s.l. Fabricius, which is consistent with trends in morphology and geography. The synonymy of North American Lapsus tristis (Mannerheim) and European Heterocerus fenestratus Thunberg is supported. Tests comparing tree topologies, along with strong evidence that many of the proposed genera are polyphyletic, indicate that the more recent generic circumscriptions are generally unnatural, with the exception of Tropicus, which forms a highly supported clade in all our analyses. We propose that the traditional classification of heterocerids, consisting of the four genera Augyles, Heterocerus, Micilus Mulsant & Ray and Elythomerus Waterhouse, plus Tropicus, is the most appropriate for the family. Molecular dating analyses suggest that vicariance played a major role in diversification, with the major clades of Heteroceridae corresponding to continental distributions and an apparent radiation of Heterocerus s.l. in the early Palaeogene period. Behavioural evidence suggesting a possible role for sexual selection during heterocerid evolution is discussed.

The evolutionary trajectories of trade-offs are ultimately governed by the evolution of the underlying physiological processes of the acquisition and subsequent allocation of resources. In this study, we focused directly on acquisition and allocation as traits and estimated their genetic architecture in the trade-off between flight capability and reproduction in the cricket, Gryllus firmus. To determine the evolutionary genetics of acquisition and allocation both within and between resource environments, we performed a large-scale quantitative genetic breeding experiment in which families were split over several resource levels. Our findings were fourfold: (1) there was substantial genetic variance in acquisition and allocation, (2) contrary to the assumption of independence between acquisition and allocation, there was a significant genetic correlation between them, (3) the genetic covariance between acquisition and allocation was significantly different in the different food environments, (4) the trade-off, as measured by the genetic correlation between flight muscle mass and ovary mass, was only significant in the food restriction environments. However, when measured directly as the genetic correlation between reproductive allocation and flight allocation, we found a consistent strong negative genetic correlation, demonstrating that when allocation is measured independently of acquisition we find evidence for the trade-off.

An impingement survival study was conducted to determine 48-h survival of fish impinged on a modified rotary disk screen equipped with fish protection features. The rotary disk screen was installed for a technology evaluation at the cooling-water intake structure of the North Omaha Station located on the Missouri River in Omaha, Nebraska. Hatchery-raised fish and native fish collected from the Missouri River were released in batches into the rotary disk screen bay and collected with a system that was constructed to recover fish from the screen's vacuum system. That system was designed to remove fish from the rotary disk screen and return them to the river. Screen performance was assessed in April and August, representing spring and summer environmental conditions. The 48-h survival rates of hatchery-raised fathead minnow Pimephales promelas, channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus, and bluegills Lepomis macrochirus and a group of mixed native species approached 100%. Many models of life history evolution assume trade-offs between major life history traits; however, these trade-offs are often not found. The Y model predicts that variation in acquisition can mask underlying allocation trade-offs and is a major hypothesis explaining why negative relationships are not always found between traits that are predicted to trade-off with one another. Despite this model’s influence on the field of life history evolution, it has rarely been properly tested. We use a model system, the wing dimorphic cricket, Gryllus firmus as a case study to test the assumptions and predictions of the Y model. By experimentally altering the acquisition regime and by estimating energy acquisition and energy allocation directly in this species, we are able to explicitly test this important model. Overall, we find strong support for the predictions of the Y model.

Impingement abundance monitoring was conducted at 15 Ohio River power plants as part of the Ohio River Ecological Research Program. Impingement rates were compared with environmental, power plant design, and operational factors that varied within and among the power plants, including water temperature, river flow and stage, change in flow and stage during the sampling events, volume of cooling water pumped, design pumping capacity, approach velocity, location of the intakes along the river, intake type, and intake configuration. The study demonstrated similarities in species composition, size distributions, and seasonal patterns over nearly 1,400 river kilometers of the Ohio River, results that were consistent with studies conducted nearly 30 years earlier. Objective – (1) To determine the ability of a continuous interstitial glucose monitoring system (CGMS) to accurately estimate blood glucose (BG) in dogs and cats with diabetic ketoacidosis. (2) To determine the effect of perfusion, hydration, body condition score, severity of ketosis, and frequency of calibration on the accuracy of the CGMS. Design – Prospective study. Setting – University Teaching Hospital. Animals – Thirteen dogs and 11 cats diagnosed with diabetic ketoacidosis were enrolled in the study within 24 hours of presentation. Interventions – Once BG dropped below 22.2 mmol/L (400 mg/dL), a sterile flexible glucose sensor was placed aseptically in the interstitial space and attached to the continuous glucose monitoring device for estimation of the interstitial glucose every 5 minutes. Measurements and Main Results – BG measurements were taken with a portable BG meter every 2–4 hours at the discretion of the primary clinician and compared with CGMS glucose measurements. Synaptic transmission is essential for nervous system function, and its dysfunction is a known major contributing factor to Alzheimer's-type dementia. Antigen-specific immunochemical methods are able to characterize synapse loss in dementia through the quantification of various synaptic proteins involved in the synaptic cycle. These immunochemical methods applied to the study of Alzheimer's disease (AD) brain specimens have correlated synaptic loss with particularly toxic forms of amyloid-beta protein and have also established synapse loss as the best correlate of dementia severity. A significant but comparatively circumscribed amount of literature describes synaptic decline in other forms of dementia. Ischemic vascular dementia (IVD) is quite heterogeneous, and synapse loss in IVD seems to be variable among IVD subtypes, probably reflecting its variable neuropathologic correlates. Loss of synaptic protein has been identified in vascular dementia of the Binswanger type and Spatz-Lindenberg's disease. Here we demonstrate a significant loss of synaptophysin density within the temporal lobe of frontotemporal dementia (FTD) patients.

Objective – Describe antimicrobial therapy and aerobic bacteriologic culture patterns in canine intensive care unit (ICU) patients in a university hospital. Design – Retrospective descriptive. Setting – A tertiary university referral hospital. Animals – Seventy-four canine ICU patients. Interventions – From January to June 2006 patient antimicrobial use, minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) results, and clinical data were recorded. Appropriate antimicrobial use was analyzed relative to the time of culture submission and MIC results. Measurements and Main Results – Mean±SD age was 7.2±4.2 years. Median (range) length of ICU and hospital stays were 3 days (1–25 d) and 4 days (1–27 d), respectively. A total of 106 cultures were submitted; 47 of 106 (44%) cultures were positive for 70 isolates, including Escherichia coli (16/70 [23%]), Staphylococcus intermedius (7/70 [10%]), and Acinetobacter baumannii (5/70 [7%]). The distribution of many species inhabiting northwestern North America has been heavily influenced by the climatic changes during the late Pleistocene. Several studies have suggested that species were restricted to glacial refugia north and/or south of the continental ice sheet front. It is also hypothesized that the coast of northwestern North America could have been a prime location for glacial refugia because of the lowering of the eustatic sea level and the concomitant rise of the continental shelf because of tectonic rebound. Alternatively, some coastal species distributions and demographics may have been unaffected in the long-term by the last glacial maximum (LGM). We tested the glacial refugium hypothesis on an obligate coastal plant species, Carex macrocephala by sampling 600 individuals from 41 populations with 11 nuclear microsatellite loci and the rpL16 plastid intragenic spacer region. The microsatellite data sets suggest a low level of population differentiation with a standardized G'(ST) = 0.032 and inbreeding was high with an F = 0.969. The homogenization of the populations along the coast was supported by a principal coordinate analysis, amovas and samova analyses. Analyses using the rpL16 data set support the results of the microsatellite analyses, with a low F(ST) of 0.042. Coalescent and mismatch analyses using rpL16 suggest that C. macrocephala has not gone through a significant bottleneck within the past 100,000 years, although a much earlier population expansion was indicated by the mismatch analysis. Carex macrocephala exhibits the characteristics of metapopulation dynamics and on the basis of these results, we concluded that it was not restricted to glacial refugia during the LGM, but that it existed as a large metapopulation.

While speciation can be found in the presence of gene flow, it is not clear what impact this gene flow has on genome- and range-wide patterns of differentiation. Here we examine gene flow across the entire range of the common sunflower, H. annuus, its historically allopatric sister species H. argophyllus and a more distantly related, sympatric relative H. petiolaris. Analysis of genotypes at 26 microsatellite loci in 1015 individuals from across the range of the three species showed substantial introgression between geographically proximal populations of H. annuus and H. petiolaris, limited introgression between H. annuus and H. argophyllus, and essentially no gene flow between the allopatric pair, H. argophyllus and H. petiolaris. Analysis of sequence divergence levels among the three species in 1420 orthologs identified from EST databases identified a subset of loci showing extremely low divergence between H. annuus and H. petiolaris and extremely high divergence between the sister species H. annuus and H. argophyllus, consistent with introgression between H. annuus and H. petiolaris at these loci. Thus, at many loci, the allopatric sister species are more genetically divergent than the more distantly related sympatric species, which have exchanged genes across much of the genome while remaining morphologically and ecologically distinct.
