Although coxsackievirus A21 (CV-A21) has been associated with acute respiratory infection (ARI) as well as poliomyelitis-like paralysis, reports of CV-A21 detection have been quite limited both globally and in Japan. CV-A21 strains were isolated from five sporadic pediatric cases with ARI in 2019 in Yamagata, Japan. Neutralizing antibodies (NT Abs) were then measured against CV-A21 using sera collected in 1976, 1985, 1999, 2009, and 2019 in Yamagata, to clarify the longitudinal epidemiology of CV-A21. The total Ab-positive rate in each year was 15.2% (35/233), 10.7% (30/281), 14.3% (28/196), 3.1% (7/236), and 1.3% (3/226), respectively. Ab-positive rates generally increased with age, especially between 1976 and 1999. Among the total Ab-positive cases, the Ab titers were relatively low; 50 cases belonged to the 1:8-1:16, 40 to 1:32-1:64, 12 to 1:128-1:256 and 1 to 1:1024< groups, respectively. No Ab-positive cases under the age of 10 were observed in any of the years analyzed. In conclusion, this study and previous works suggested that CV-A21 is a unique enterovirus, which is not transmitted readily among young children but causes sporadic ARI cases mainly among those ≥ 15 years of age in the community. Uterus transplantation (UTx) is now a treatment for women with uterine factor infertility to have a child. However, UTx is still largely at the experimental stage, and many medical issues remain unsolved. Therefore, adequate studies in large animals including non-human primates are required for validation of these issues. UTx research, especially in non-human primates, can provide important information for its full establishment in humans due to the anatomical and physiological similarities between the two. We accumulated data from UTx studies using cynomolgus macaques since 2009 and established autologous and allogeneic UTx models which led to deliveries after performing the procedure. In this paper, we summarized key points to develop UTx models in cynomolgus macaques based on our experience. UTx models in non-human primates can surely contribute new and beneficial knowledge in this field and can be useful for the further development of UTx in humans.

Aim Postoperative pulmonary embolism can be a fatal surgical complication and is thought to occur secondary to asymptomatic venous thromboembolism (VTE) that exists preoperatively in some patients. The purpose of this study was to clarify the frequency and risk factors of pretreatment VTE in gynecological cancer patients. Methods This study investigated 2086 patients with gynecological cancer (cervix, n = 754; endometrium, n = 862; ovary, n = 470) who underwent initial treatment between 2004 and 2017. Pretreatment VTE screening was performed with D-dimer (DD) levels in these patients. Based on this, the associated risk factors were retrospectively analyzed. Results Pretreatment VTE was discovered in 7.3% of patients with cervical cancer, 11.5% of those with endometrial cancer and 27.0% of those with ovarian cancer. Significant independent risk factors were: age greater than or equal to 60 years and tumor long diameter greater than or equal to 40 mm for cervical cancer; age greater than or equal to 60 years, stage III/IV advanced disease, clear cell carcinoma and tumor long diameter greater than or equal to 60 mm for endometrial cancer; and age greater than or equal to 60 years, clear cell carcinoma and massive ascites for ovarian cancer. Conclusion Pretreatment asymptomatic VTE is very frequent in gynecological cancer patients. It may be beneficial to consider measuring DD or performing venous ultrasonography in patients with the above risk factors.

Aim Mismatch negativity (MMN) deficit is one of the most robust and replicable findings in schizophrenia, and primarily reflects deficient functioning of the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor system. Although the dopamine receptor is known not to modulate MMN over the short term, it is unclear whether the dopamine system affects MMN in the long term. Methods We explored correlations between MMN and levels of plasma dopamine and serotonin metabolites in 18 patients with schizophrenia psychiatrically evaluated with the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS). Results A significant negative correlation exists between MMN amplitude and plasma levels of dopamine metabolites. Plasma serotonin metabolite levels were not correlated with MMN. The PANSS total score and Negative score also showed negative correlations with MMN amplitude. Conclusion The usual strong therapeutic blockade of dopamine receptors applied in cases of schizophrenia may reduce MMN over the long term.

This article verifies the applicability of an assessment method on flood risk reduction, combining and assessing hazard control measures and exposure reduction measures together. The method develops collated flood risk curves and uses limited data, so it is an approach which can be readily applied in developing countries, where an understanding of flood risk reduction measures are become increasingly important. The method was proposed as a result of studies conducted by the National Institute for Land and Infrastructure Management, Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, Japan. When applying the method to a river improvement and relocation scheme with land mounding in Mindanao, the Philippines, the advantages and limitations of the method are considered.

BACKGROUND We report the case of a patient with smoking-induced radiation laryngeal necrosis (RLN) after undergoing definitive radiotherapy (RT) alone for T1a glottic squamous cell carcinoma. CASE The patient was a 63-year-old man who had a history of heavy smoking. He quit smoking when he was diagnosed with glottic squamous cell carcinoma. The RT dose was 63 Gy, delivered in 28 fractions with the three-dimensional conventional RT technique for the larynx. After RT completion, the initial treatment response was complete response. He then underwent follow-up examinations. At 13 months after RT, the patient resumed smoking. At 2 months after resuming smoking, he had severe sore throat and hoarseness. Laryngoscopy revealed a large tumor in the glottis. Surgical excision was performed, and the patient was histologically diagnosed with RLN, as late toxicity without cancer recurrence. At 3 weeks postoperatively, the patient had dyspnea, and laryngoscopy revealed total laryngeal paralysis. Thus, he underwent an emergent tracheostomy. The administration of steroids affected RLN, and laryngeal paralysis gradually improved. CONCLUSIONS This case suggests that smoking may have the potential to induce RLN after RT. Moreover, continuing smoking cessation is significantly important for patients with glottic cancer who receive RT. Rather than leaving smoking cessation up to the patient, it would be necessary for clinicians to actively intervene to help patients continue their effort to quit smoking.

Aim Thrombospondin‐1 (TSP‐1) is an astrocyte‐derived synaptogenesis‐related factor. It was previously reported to be increased by chronic treatment of electroconvulsive seizure, a model of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), in rat hippocampus. The aim of this study was to examine whether serum levels of TSP‐1 are associated with depression and ECT. Methods Serum TSP‐1 levels of major depressive disorder (MDD) patients (n = 36) and age‐ and gender‐matched healthy controls (n = 36) were measured by TSP‐1 ELISA. MDD patients were diagnosed according to the Diagnostics and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders‐IV‐TR and underwent ECT. MDD patients were also analyzed for serum TSP‐1 levels pre‐ and post‐ECT. Evaluation of symptoms was obtained using the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression. Results Serum TSP‐1 levels showed significant decreases specific to female MDD patients. However, TSP‐1 did not change pre‐ and post‐ECT, did not correlate with symptoms, nor was not affected by the dose of antidepressants. Conclusion Serum TSP‐1 is a possible female‐specific factor that reflects depressive trait, but not state., The aim of this study was to examine whether serum levels of TSP‐1 are associated with depression and ECT. Labeling agents with radioisotopes or fluorescent dyes are useful for investigating the biodistributions of biologically active proteins and peptides. Compared with molecular imaging with a single modality, dual imaging probes provide complementary information for each modality. The development of a dual radioisotope/fluorescence agent for protein labeling would thus be valuable for both preclinical and clinical applications. In this study, we designed and synthesized a radioiodinated BODIPY derivative (BODIPY-ML) with a maleimide group as a thiol-labeling agent. In the presence of N-chlorosuccinimide and 1% acetic acid, [125 I]BODIPY-ML was successfully obtained at a radiochemical yield of 42%. In conjugation studies, model proteins including RGD peptides and anti-HER2 VHH were successfully labeled with BODIPY-ML via covalent bonds. The results demonstrated the feasibility of the radioiodinated BODIPY as a dual-labeling agent via thiol groups.

Aim The efficacy of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) has been established in psychiatric disorders but the high rate of relapse is a critical problem. The current study sought preventative factors associated with relapse after a response to ECT in a continuum of four major psychiatric disorders. Methods The records of 255 patients with four psychiatric disorders (83 unipolar depression, 60 bipolar depression, 91 schizophrenia, 21 schizoaffective disorder) were retrospectively reviewed. Results The relapse-free rate of all patients at 1 year was 56.3% in the four psychiatric disorders without a difference. As a result of univariate analysis, three items could be considered as preventative factors associated with relapse: a small number of psychiatric symptom episodes before an acute course of ECT, the use of mood stabilizers, and the use of maintenance ECT. Multivariate analysis was performed, keeping age, sex, and diagnosis constant in addition to the three items, and small number of psychiatric symptom episodes before an acute course of ECT (P = 0.003), the use of lithium (P = 0.025), the use of valproate (P = 0.027), and the use of maintenance ECT (P = 0.001) were found to be significant preventative measures against relapse. Conclusion The use of mood stabilizers, such as lithium and valproate, and maintenance ECT could be shared preventive factors associated with relapse after a response to ECT in four major psychiatric disorders.

Right‐sided infected endocarditis (IE) is very rare, especially PVIE accounts for 1.6%‐2.7% % of all IE cases. We successfully treated a IE of pulmonary valve patient with bioprosthetic valve and annulus enlargement with pericardial patch.

Cobalt‐loaded MFI zeolite showed distinct activity for direct methylation of benzene with methane into toluene. High activity was found at around 0.6 of Co/Al molar ratio. Incorporation of carbon from methane into the methyl group of toluene was confirmed with isotope tracer experiments and mass spectroscopy. Ammonia infrared‐mass spectroscopy temperature‐programmed desorption, transmission electron microscopy, X‐ray absorption near edge spectroscopy and extended X‐ray absorption fine structure indicated that Lewis acidic divalent (+II of oxidation state) Co species mono‐atomically dispersed on the ion exchange site of MFI zeolite was the active species.

Selective plasma exchange has been shown to be effective in various diseases, but no studies have assessed the benefits of daily treatment. We aimed to investigate the removal dynamics of immunoglobulins, fibrinogen, and factor XIII on three consecutive days in three patients. For mean processed plasma volumes of 1.06 × plasma volume, reductions of 79.6%, 49.3%, and 8.6% were seen for immunoglobulins G, A, and M, respectively. The reductions for fibrinogen and factor XIII were 18.4% and 13.0%, respectively. Removal dynamics were similar for immunoglobulin G-related autoantibodies and immunoglobulin G when using daily selective plasma exchange. Moreover, daily use effectively removed the immunoglobulin G while retaining the coagulation factors. When disease-specific autoantibodies are limited to immunoglobulin G, daily selective plasma exchange may be a useful and safe method of intensive induction treatment for plasmapheresis. However, further study is required in larger cohorts to confirm these findings.

PREMISE OF THE STUDY Plants that secrete abundant nectar attract many pollinator visits, potentially leading to a high frequency of geitonogamous pollination. However, intraflower variation in nectar volume might enhance early departure from the flower or inflorescence, reducing geitonogamy. To examine the adaptive significance of multiple nectar-producing spurs within flowers, we related intraflower variation in nectar characteristics to pollinator foraging behavior and plant reproductive success in protandrous Aquilegia buergeriana var. oxysepala. METHODS We investigated if nectar volume and sugar mass relate to spur length and if intraflower variation in nectar characteristics differ between male- and female-phase flowers. Because male function requires more pollinator visits than female function, male-phase flowers are expected to have greater nectar volume and lower intraflower variation in nectar volume than female-phase flowers. We used intraflower variation in spur length as an indicator of variation in nectar characteristics and investigated how spur length variation affects pollinator behavior, pollen removal, and seed production. KEY RESULTS Male-phase flowers had greater nectar volume and lower intraflower variation in nectar volume than female-phase flowers. Intraflower variation in spur length reduced the duration of bumblebee visits. Short visits reduced seed production, but increased pollen removal. CONCLUSIONS Our results suggest that high intraflower variation in nectar production rate can reduce geitonogamy and potentially increase the genetic diversity of pollen received. Such pattern of nectar secretion within and among flowers may allow flowers to ensure effective pollen transfer or high seed production.
