Massicus raddei Blessig (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae), also referred to as the oak long-horned beetle (OLB), is a non-natural host for the generalist parasitoid Sclerodermus pupariae Yang et Yao (Hymenoptera: Bethylidae). To determine whether this generalist parasitoid might be a suitable agent for the control of OLB, the adaptive learning experience of adult female parasitoids to OLB larvae was investigated in the laboratory. A Y-tube olfactometer bioassay was used to examine the effects of adaptive learning experience on the foraging ability of parasitoids for OLB larvae. The results indicated that parasitoids were significantly attracted by the volatiles of ash bark, Fraxinus velutina, with emerald ash borer (EAB), Agrilus planipennis Fairmaire (Coleoptera: Buprestidae) larvae and larval frass, after exposure to ash bark mixed with EAB larval frass (learning condition A). In contrast, after exposure to oak bark, Quercus liaotungensis, mixed with OLB larval frass (learning condition C), parasitoids showed significant preference for the volatiles of oak bark with OLB larvae and larval frass. On the basis of the results of no-choice tests, we found that parasitoids exposed to learning condition C had greater paralysis efficiency and higher OLB larvae parasitism rates than those exposed to learning condition A or no experience. Furthermore, parasitoids fed on OLB larvae in learning condition C had significantly greater paralysis efficiency and higher OLB larvae parasitism rates than other parasitoids tested. Parasitoids fed on EAB larvae in learning condition A had the lowest paralysis efficiency and OLB larvae parasitism rates among the parasitoids tested. These findings suggested that adaptive learning significantly enhanced the ability of a generalist parasitoid to utilize a novel host. This may provide a new approach to controlling non-natural hosts using generalist parasitoids.

As it is well established that an association exists between congenital bilateral absence of the vas deferens (CBAVD) and cystic fibrosis gene mutations, we investigated CFTR(TG)m(T)n polymorphism within a Taiwanese population that exhibits a very low incidence of CF. Sixty-three patients with CBAVD and 86 age-matched normal control subjects were evaluated. Temporal temperature gradient gel electrophoresis was used for CFTR mutational analysis. No major CFTR mutation was found in the patient series. A single prominent CFTR mutation, IVS8-5T, was present; however, (50.8% of 63 cases and 33.3% of 126 alleles), and exhibited a high prevalence of 12 or 13 TG repeats (93.8% of 32 cases and 95.2% of 42 alleles with IVS8-5T). Although these results are similar to those of Japanese CBAVD patients, they are higher than the common frequency (about 21%) found among Caucasian CBAVD patients. The very high percentage (42.9%) of patients with no CFTR mutations is also an ethnic characteristic. We concluded that CBAVD patients from Taiwan, who express a very low incidence of CF, were less affected by CFTR mutations, with the exception of IVS8-5T linked to either 12 or 13 TG repeats, which does exhibit a high prevalence among CBAVD patients tested.

The wasp Macrocentrus cingulum (Hymenoptera) is an endoparasitoid that uses larvae of the Asian corn borer Ostrinia furnacalis as one of its hosts. The wasp is polyembryonic and a single wasp egg gives rise to several dozens of embryos. Earlier studies showed that the fibrous layer on the surface of M. cingulum eggs protects them from the immune system of the moth larvae. However, the way in which the embryos of the parasitoid avoid being encapsulated remained unknown. In this paper, we show that the evasion of encapsulation is mediated through the extraembryonic membrane. We also show that M. cingulum embryos developed normally in the larvae of O. furnacalis but were encapsulated when injected into the larvae of Helicoverpa armigera, which is not a host species for the wasp larvae. When the extraembryonic membrane was removed, either chemically using the enzyme dispase or mechanically using a dissecting needle, the ‘unprotected’ embryos were also encapsulated both in vivo and in vitro by the haemocytes of the normal host O. furnacalis. It was also shown that the extraembryonic membrane was labelled strongly with fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)-conjugated Helix pomatia (H.p.) lectin. This suggests that a chemical in, or on, the extraembryonic membrane, that helps the embryos of M. cingulum to avoid encapsulation, is possibly a glycodeterminant produced in the haemocoel of the wasp.

The hymenopteran Macrocentrus cingulum is a polyembryonic endoparasitoid that uses larvae of the lepidopteran Ostrinia furnacalis as one of its host insects. Previous studies indicated that although this parasitoid does not transmit polydnaviruses when it lays its eggs, a layer of fibrous tissue on the surface of the eggs helps them to avoid being encapsulated by the immune system of the host insect. However, as eggs of M. cingulum that are laid into late instar larvae of O. furnacalis often do not survive, there is a tendency for the adults to lay their eggs in earlier instar larvae. We studied the amounts of encapsulation and melanization around beads of DEAE-Sephadex A-25 injected into the haemoceol of fourth and fifth larval instars of O. furnacalis. The beads were injected to simulate the presence of eggs of the parasitoid M. cingulum. We found that the levels of encapsulation and melanization around the beads increased with the age of the O. furnacalis larvae. Likewise, the total counts of the haemocytes circulating within the haemolymph increased with the age of the O. furnacalis larvae and were correlated negatively with the percentage of larvae parasitized by M. cingulum. It appears that young O. furnacalis possess a weak cellular defence, and as a result are more susceptible to being parasitized. Hence, the correlation between the levels of encapsulation and the age of the host insect appears simply to reflect passive evasion.

The majority of prehistoric lithic artefacts were fashioned from rocks and minerals no harder than quartz, and there is no prehistoric evidence for the working of harder materials, such as corundum and diamond. The earliest physical evidence for the use of corundum (ruby, sapphire) is thought to be the abrasive grit recovered from Bronze Age Minoan quartz beads (c. 1700–1500 bc), while diamond is thought to have been used no earlier than 500 bc, in India. Here we show that corundum was worked c. 4000–3500 bc during the Neolithic period in China, in the form of polished axes from the Liangzhu and Sanxingcun cultures. We also present physical evidence that later Liangzhu axes (c. 2500 bc), made from the same previously undescribed rock whose most abundant component is corundum, were polished to a mirror-like finish with a diamond abrasive. Our findings, which are the first to support the use of corundum and diamond in a prehistoric context, may also help to explain the trademark feature of the Neolithic in China, vast quantities of finely polished nephrite jade artefacts.
