Preventing sintering of supported nanocatalysts is an important issue in nanocatalysis. A feasible way is to choose a suitable support. However, whether the metal–support interactions promote or prevent the sintering has not been fully identified. Now, completely different sintering behaviors of Au nanoparticles on distinct anatase TiO2 surfaces have been determined by in situ TEM. The full in situ sintering processes of Au nanoparticles were visualized on TiO2 (101) surface, which coupled the Ostwald ripening and particle migration coalescence. In contrast, no sintering of Au on TiO2 anatase (001) surface was observed under the same conditions. This facet‐dependent sintering mechanism is fully explained by the density function theory calculations. This work not only offers direct evidence of the important role of supports in the sintering process, but also provides insightful information for the design of sintering‐resistant nanocatalysts.

Tuning and tailoring of surface terminating functional species hold the key to unlock unprecedented properties for a wide range of applications of the largest 2D family known as MXenes. However, a few routes for surface tailoring are explored and little is known about the extent to which the terminating species can saturate the MXene surfaces. Among available terminations, atomic oxygen is of interest for electrochemical energy storage, hydrogen evolution reaction, photocatalysis, etc. However, controlled oxidation of the surfaces is not trivial due to the favored formation of oxides. In the present contribution, single sheets of Ti3C2Tx MXene, inherently terminated by F and O, are defluorinated by heating in vacuum and subsequentially exposed to O-2 gas at temperatures up to 450 degrees C in situ, in an environmental transmission electron microscope. Results include exclusive termination by O on the MXene surfaces and eventual supersaturation (x amp;gt; 2) with a retained MXene sheet structure. Upon extended O exposure, the MXene structure transforms into TiO2 and desorbs surface bound H2O and CO2 reaction products. These results are fundamental for understanding the oxidation, the presence of water on MXene surfaces, and the degradation of MXenes, and pave way for further tailoring of MXene surfaces. The doping process in GaP core-shell nanowire pn-junctions using different precursors is evaluated by mapping the nanowires' electrostatic potential distribution by means of off-axis electron holography. Three precursors, triethyltin (TESn), ditertiarybutylselenide, and silane are investigated for n-type doping of nanowire shells; among them, TESn is shown to be the most efficient precursor. Off-axis electron holography reveals higher electrostatic potentials in the regions of nanowire cores grown by the vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) mechanism (axial growth) than the regions grown parasitically by the vapor-solid (VS) mechanism (radial growth), attributed to different incorporation efficiency between VLS and VS of unintentional p-type carbon doping originating from the trimethylgallium precursor. This study shows that off-axis electron holography of doped nanowires is unique in terms of the ability to map the electrostatic potential and thereby the active dopant distribution with high spatial resolution.

Silica-supported, bimetallic Cu–Ni nanomaterials were prepared with different ratios of Cu to Ni by incipient wetness impregnation without a specific calcination step before reduction. Different in situ characterization techniques, in particular transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), were applied to follow the reduction and alloying process of Cu–Ni nanoparticles on silica. In situ reduction of Cu–Ni samples with structural characterization by combined synchrotron XRD and XAS reveals a strong interaction between Cu and Ni species, which results in improved reducibility of the Ni species compared with monometallic Ni. At high Ni concentrations silica-supported Cu–Ni alloys form a homogeneous solid solution of Cu and Ni, whereas at lower Ni contents Cu and Ni are partly segregated and form metallic Cu and Cu–Ni alloy phases. Under the same reduction conditions, the particle sizes of reduced Cu–Ni alloys decrease with increasing Ni content. Estimates of the metal surface area from sulfur chemisorption and from the XRD particle size generally agree well on the trend across the composition range, but show some disparity in terms of the absolute magnitude of the metal area. This work provides practical synthesis guidelines towards preparation of Cu–Ni alloy nanomaterials with different Cu/Ni ratios, and insight into the application of different in situ techniques for characterization of the alloy formation.

Photocatalysts for solar fuel production are subject to intensive investigation as they constitute one viable route for solar energy harvesting. Cuprous oxide (Cu2O) is a working photocatalyst for hydrogen evolution but it photocorrodes upon light illumination in an aqueous environment. Environmental transmission electron microscopy (ETEM) makes it possible to obtain insight into the local structure, composition and reactivity of catalysts in their working environment, which is of fundamental interest for sustainable energy research and is essential for further material optimization. Herein, photoreduction of Cu2O is studied in situ using a dedicated TEM specimen holder for light illumination.

This review highlights the importance of developing multi-scale characterisation techniques for analysing operating catalysts in their working environment. We emphasise that a hierarchy of in situ techniques that provides macro-, meso- and nano-scale information is required to elucidate and optimise catalyst performance fully. This combined methodology should ideally embrace spatially resolved and spatio-temporal monitoring of a) the structure, catalytic activity, temperature and heat/mass transfer pattern in axial and radial directions in real reactors, b) the structure and temperature/heat/mass transport gradients in shaped catalysts and catalyst grains and c) meso- and nano-scale information about particles and clusters, whose physical and electronic properties are linked directly to the micro-kinetic behaviour of the catalysts. Techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), infrared (IR), Raman, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), UV/Vis, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), which have mainly provided global atomic scale information, are being developed to provide the same information on a more local scale, often with sub-second time resolution. X-ray microscopy, both in the soft and more recently in the hard X-ray regime, allows two- and three-dimensional information to be collected down to 10 nm spatial resolution in a gas atmosphere or liquid, although this improvement is at the expense of temporal resolution. Electron microscopy, which provides excellent local atomic scale structural and spectroscopic information, is being developed towards tomographic imaging and realistic conditions, allowing gaps to be bridged in pressure, reaction conditions and length scales, up to the meso- and macro-scale. In addition, new techniques such as single molecule fluorescence spectroscopy and non-linear spectroscopic techniques are emerging. In this review, we discuss prospects for the development and combined application of both existing and new techniques for in situ catalyst characterisation.

Indium arsenide nanowires are grown directly on silicon substrates (see figure and cover) using a method employing self-assembled organic coatings to create oxide-based growth templates. High-performance materials, such as InAs, could have great impact on future nanoelectronics if integrated with Si, but integration has so far been hard to realize with other methods.

High-resolution transmission electron microscopy characterization of molybdenum oxide catalyst precursors is carried out for a better understanding of the mechanisms leading to the active catalytic material. The precipitated material consists of both large-unit cell crystals and randomly orientated clusters on a 3-5 nm scale. The crystalline clusters are embedded in non-crystalline material, preventing the formation of large well-defined inactive orthorhombic MoO(3) crystals during activation of the catalyst material.

Over time, there has been an increasing interest in observing catalysts in their operating environment at high spatial resolution and ultimately to determine the structure of a catalytically active surface. One tool with the potential to do exactly this in direct space is the transmission electron microscope, and since its invention by Ernst Ruska, the idea of imaging samples under gaseous atmospheres was envisioned. However, microscopes have traditionally been operated in high vacuum due to sensitive electron sources, sample contamination, and electron scattering off gas molecules resulting in loss of resolution. Using suitably clean gases, modified pumping schemes, and short pathways through dense gas regions, these issues are now circumvented. Here we provide an account of best practice using environmental transmission electron microscopy on catalytic systems illustrated using select examples from the literature showing how in situ electron microscopy can provide new insight into the state of catalysts...

Review: prospects for the development and combined application of existing and new techniques for in situ catalyst characterization; 125 refs.

On p. 1801, Lars Samuelson and co-workers report on InAs nanowires that are grown directly on Si substrates by employing self-assembled organic coatings to create an oxide template which guides nanowire nucleation. The nanowires extend vertically from the Si(111) substrate (foreground). No metal catalysts are used, and the InAs crystal extends to the nanowire tip as shown in the atomically resolved transmission electron microscopy image (dome background). The reported method constitutes a promising approach to the integration of new components into existing Si technology.
