Abstract

A modular grid is a pair of sequences $(f_m)_m$ and $(g_n)_n$ of weakly holomorphic modular forms such that for almost all $m$ and $n$, the coefficient of $q^n$ in $f_m$ is the negative of the coefficient of $q^m$ in $g_n$. Zagier proved this coefficient duality in weights $1/2$ and $3/2$ in the Kohnen plus space, and such grids have appeared for Poincar\'{e} series, for modular forms of integral weight, and in many other situations. We give a general proof of coefficient duality for canonical row-reduced bases of spaces of weakly holomorphic modular forms of integral or half-integral weight for every group $\Gamma \subseteq {\text{SL}}_2(\mathbb{R})$ commensurable with ${\text{SL}}_2(\mathbb{Z})$. We construct bivariate generate functions that encode these modular forms, and study linear operations on the resulting modular grids., Comment: Second revision

6. Structural validity of the Eating Disorder Examination – Questionnaire (EDE-Q): a systematic review

Abstract

Objective: The main aim was to perform a systematic literature review of studies investigating the factor structure of the Eating Disorder Examination – Questionnaire (EDE-Q), a widely used measure of eating pathology. Secondary aims were to summarise the quality of reporting of latent variable (factor) analyses in these studies and review support for different factor solutions. Method: Literature was identified through Scopus, Medline, PsycInfo, and ProQuest databases published up to 23 February 2022 and outreach via an international listserv. All studies published in English reporting factor analysis of the EDE-Q were included with few restrictions. Sixty studies including 63,389 participants met inclusion criteria. Results: The originally proposed four-factor solution received little empirical support, although few alternative models have been robustly evaluated. Items assessing shape and weight concerns frequently coalesce in factor solutions, suggesting that these constructs are closely related. Investigations of brief versions of the EDE-Q have produced more consistent findings, suggesting that these measures, particularly a seven-item version, might be useful alternatives to the full version. Quality of studies was reasonable, with important methodological elements of factor analysis often reported. Discussion: The findings are of relevance to practitioners and researchers, suggesting that the ‘original’ factor structure of the EDE-Q should be reconsidered and that use of a seven-item version is to be encouraged.

12. The brief (seven-item) eating disorder examination‐questionnaire: evaluation of a non-nested version in men and women

Abstract

Objective: Several recent studies have examined the psychometric properties of brief measures of eating disorder attitudes based on the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire (EDE-Q). A seven-item version (the EDE-Q7) has been proposed but, as yet, has only been investigated by looking at the items when presented as part of the longer EDE-Q (i.e., as a nested version). The current study presented the EDE-Q7 as a standalone instrument and examined factor structure fit and measurement invariance across male and female genders.\ud Methods: University students (244 women; 155 men; 1 did not identify with either gender) completed questionnaires as part of two independent studies. All individuals completed the EDE-Q7 and measures of eating disorder behaviours. In a mixed-gender subsample (n = 286), measures of depression and eating disorder-specific quality of life were also included. Confirmatory factor analysis of the EDE-Q7 was conducted on males and females independently, in addition to estimates of internal consistency reliability and validity. Measurement invariance was assessed through multigroup confirmatory factor analysis.\ud Results: The EDE-Q7 demonstrated good internal consistency and findings supported measurement invariance by gender. In a mixed-gender subsample, the measure showed positive associations with depression and both eating disorder behaviours and eating disorder-specific quality of life.\ud Discussion: The present study adds to the literature supporting the psychometric properties of the EDE-Q7, extending this to use of the questionnaire as a standalone instrument. Measurement invariance suggests that the measure may be appropriate for college-age men and women, although future studies should establish psychometric properties more fully.

17. Eating pathology in midlife women: similar or different to younger counterparts?

Abstract

Objective\ud This study examined potential similarities and differences between women with eating disorders (EDs) in midlife and their younger counterparts.\ud Method\ud Seven hundred and three women assessed by a specialist eating disorder service were divided into three groups based on age (18–25, 25–40, and 40+) and compared on a number of clinical and demographic measures. Distribution of ED diagnoses was also examined between groups.\ud Results\ud Midlife women were less likely to receive a diagnosis of anorexia nervosa and more likely to receive a diagnosis of binge‐eating disorder than their younger counterparts. Duration of illness was longer and age of ED onset later in the midlife group but no differences were seen on measures of global ED pathology, psychosocial impairment, or psychological distress.\ud Discussion\ud This study adds to the developing literature concerning EDs in midlife women, although further work is needed to support the findings presented here and to examine profiles of males presenting to treatment centers.

18. A collaborative care skills workshop for carers: can it be delivered in 1 day?

Abstract

Carers of individuals with eating disorders (EDs) report high levels of burden and distress and describe a number of unmet needs. As a result, a number of interventions have been designed to support carers, including the “Maudsley eating disorder collaborative care skills workshops,” which comprise six 2‐hr workshops delivered over 3 months for parents and carers of people with EDs. The current study aimed to test a proof‐of‐concept that this workshop could be effectively delivered in 1 day. An additional aim was to assess whether the workshop had direct effects on carer skills. A nonexperimental repeated measures research design was employed, giving measures before and after a 1‐day workshop. Results suggested significant increases in carer self‐efficacy and carer skills, with moderate to large effect sizes. Qualitative analyses supported these results whilst also generating ideas to improve the 1‐day workshop.

25. An investigation into the psychometric properties of the CORE-OM in patients with eating disorders

Abstract

Aim: The current study aimed to explore the psychometric properties of the CORE‐OM (Clinical Outcomes in Routine Evaluation – Outcome Measure) when used in an eating disorder sample. Method: The CORE‐OM was administered at assessment to 360 individuals referred to an eating disorders service. Principal component analysis was conducted to look at the psychometric structure of the CORE‐OM, and psychometric properties were investigated using analyses of reliability and validity. Results: Analyses of the psychometric structure suggested a three‐component solution reflecting negatively worded, positively worded and risk items. The CORE‐OM showed good acceptability, acceptable internal and test‐retest reliabilities, as well as good convergent and known groups validity. Conclusions: The results of the current study support the CORE‐OM as a reliable and valid measure for assessing psychological distress in eating disorders.
