The polymorphs of 2ClChMe-4 in Form I (ribbon-like crystal) and Form II (block-like crystal) were prepared, and they exhibited curling/flipping and expansion upon heating on account of single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformations. The irreversible phase transformations occurred separately at 53.2 °C and 57.8 °C for the crystals in Form I and Form II, during which the molecular conformation of 2ClChMe-4 changed and the molecules slipped along the (100) plane. Movement at the molecular level resulted in changes of cell parameters, which in turn led to macroscopic motions of the crystals upon heating. Additionally, the ribbon-like crystals of 2ClChMe-4 showed photo-induced bending driven by [2+2] cycloaddition. Accordingly, an actuator showing reversible bending behavior was fabricated triggered by light and heat successively. Like biomimetic self-actuators, such multi-stimuli mechanical responsive molecular crystals might have potential applications in soft robots, artificial muscles and microfluidic systems.

PIN-FORMED (PIN)-dependent directional auxin transport is crucial for plant development. Although the redistribution of auxin mediated by the polarization of PIN3 plays key roles in modulating hypocotyl cell expansion, how PIN3 becomes repolarized to the proper sites within hypocotyl cells is poorly understood. We previously generated the clathrin light chain clc2-1 clc3-1 double mutant in Arabidopsis thaliana and found that it has an elongated hypocotyl phenotype compared to the wild type. Here, we performed genetic, cell biology, and pharmacological analyses combined with live-cell imaging to elucidate the molecular mechanism underlying the role of clathrin light chains in hypocotyl elongation. Our analyses indicated that the defects of the double mutant enhanced auxin maxima in epidermal cells, thus, promoting hypocotyl elongation. PIN3 relocated to the lateral sides of hypocotyl endodermal cells in clc2-1 clc3-1 mutants to redirect auxin toward the epidermal cell layers. Moreover, the loss of function of PIN3 largely suppressed the long hypocotyl phenotype of the clc2-1 clc3-1 double mutant, as did treatment with auxin transport inhibitors. Based on these data, we propose that clathrin modulates PIN3 abundance and polarity to direct auxin flux and inhibit cell elongation in the hypocotyl, providing novel insights into the regulation of hypocotyl elongation. Four new D–π–A-type difluoroboron β-carbonyl cyclic ketonate complexes that contain carbazole units (TCCH, TCCP, CCH, and CCP) have been synthesized that exhibited reversible mechanofluorochromic (MFC) behaviors. Interestingly, TCCH and TCCP, which contained a tert-butyl carbazole group, exhibited high-contrast mechanofluorochromism compared with CCH and CCP, which just contained a carbazole group. For example, shifts of Δδ=49 and 20 nm were detected during the mechanofluorochromism of TCCH and CCH, respectively. We found that tert-butyl carbazole derivatives existed as isolated molecules in the as-synthesized crystals, on account of the steric hindrance of the tert-butyl groups, and that J-aggregates were formed upon grinding. Transformation between the isolated and aggregated molecules, which was stimulated by mechanical force, led to clear changes in the emission properties. However, J-aggregates were formed in the as-synthesized crystals of carbazole derivatives, and grinding only weakened the strength of the π–π interactions, thereby resulting in low-contrast mechanofluorochromism. Therefore, this approach provides a useful strategy for the design of MFC dyes with high performance.

We report interesting photomechanical behaviors of the dynamic molecular crystals of (E)-2-(2,4-dichlorostyryl)benzo[d]oxazole (BOACl24). The photosalient effect of the rod-like crystal based on a metal-free olefin driven by photodimerization is observed. Moreover, the needle-like crystals of BOACl24 exhibit a reversible bending away from a UV light source. The nanofibers curl easily under UV irradiation in an organogel, in which the photo-induced rolling of a small slice occurs. This suggests that the rapid release of the accumulated strain during photodimerization may lead to a photosalient effect, and the bending or curling happens when the strain is released slowly. Notably, [2+2] cycloaddition takes place between two different conformational isomers of BOACl24 on account of the rotation of the benzoxazole ring around the C-C bond in an excited state before photodimerization. Such topo-photochemical reaction has not been reported elsewhere.

We have synthesized a series of new salicylaldimine difluoroboron complexes bearing carbazole moieties. It was found that the substituent groups in carbazole and in benzene rings of salicylaldimine had effect on their ICT emission. Interestingly, the synthesized difluoroboron complexes could emit strong light in solid states under UV irradiation and exhibited reversible mechanofluorochromism. For instance, the emission at 488 nm for the pristine sample of TCH red-shifted to 571 nm upon grinding, and the ground powder with orange emission could be turned into the solid emitting bluish-green light when fumed with DCM or heated at 200 °C for 2 min. It should be noted that the shift of 83 nm for the emission band for the dye during MFC process was seldom reported in metallic-free organic compounds. XRD patterns illustrated that the transformation between crystalline and amorphous states was reasonable for the mechanofluorochromism. These MFC emitters based on salicylaldimine difluoroboron complexes may have potential applications in mechanical sensors, security printing and data-storage.

Several novel chiral tridentate ligands containing thiazoline were efficiently synthesized from commercially available l=cysteine in high yield. These ligands were subsequently applied to the asymmetric Henry reaction of nitromethane and various aldehydes. It was found that the structures of the thiazoline ligands had a significant influence on the enantioselectivity. It was shown that the optimal catalyst for this reaction was a ligand complexed with CuCl, which was formed from chiral thiazoline with chiral aminoalcohol. At −20°C, with 10 mol% of this ligand, a product with (S)-configuration was isolated in 93% yield and 98% enantiomeric excess. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Studies with ex vivo stimulation of whole blood samples from injured patients have revealed a diminished production capacity for a broad range of secretory products, including inflammatory cytokines. Recent interest has focused on the release of mediators in serum that depress the cell-mediated immune response following trauma. The involvement of the lipid mediator prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) has been assumed because it is a potent endogenous immunosuppressor. In the present study, we tested the hypothesis that inhibitory substances circulating in the patient's serum after a major musculoskeletal trauma might impair leukocyte function by evaluating the effect of such serum on cytokine release in a whole blood model. Six females and three males undergoing elective total hip replacement were included in the study. Ex vivo LPS-induced TNF-alpha and IL-10 were measured in whole blood sampled preoperatively and added serum taken before, at the end of operation, and at postoperative days 1 and 6 with saline as negative control. LPS induced significant releases of TNF-alpha and IL-10 in whole blood. Addition of preoperative, postoperative, and day-1 postoperative serum did not alter the LPS-induced release of TNF-alpha as compared to saline. In the presence of serum from postoperative day 6, however, the expression of TNF-alpha was significantly reduced as compared to saline and preoperative serum (p = 0.021 and 0.008, respectively). Neither of the serum samples altered the release of IL-10. PGE2 was significantly (p = 0.008) increased in serum at postoperative day 6 as compared to preoperative levels. In conclusion, these data show that at day 6 after major orthopaedic surgery, the patient serum contained activity that inhibited ex vivo LPS-induced TNF-alpha release. The potent TNF-alpha inhibitory activity found at day 6 after injury correlated with increased levels of PGE2 and indicates cell-mediated hyporesponsiveness to a second stimulus.
