Abstract

Abstract Objective Preterm infants are at a high risk of developing BPD. Although progression in neonatal care has improved, BPD still causes significant morbidity and mortality, which can be attributed to the limited therapeutic choices for BPD. This review discusses the potential of MSC in treating BPD as well as their hurdles and possible solutions. Data Sources The search for data was not limited to any sites but was mostly performed on all clinical trials available in ClinicalTrials.gov as well as on PubMed by applying the following keywords: lung injury, preterm, inflammation, neonatal, bronchopulmonary dysplasia and mesenchymal stem cells. Study Selections The articles chosen for this review were collectively determined to be relevant and appropriate in discussing MSC not only as a potential treatment strategy for curbing the incidence of BPD but also including insights on problems regarding MSC treatment for BPD. Results Clinical trials regarding the use of MSC for BPD had good results but also illustrated insights on problems to be addressed in the future regarding the treatment strategy. Despite that, the clinical trials had mostly favourable reviews. Conclusion With BPD existing as a constant threat and there being no permanent solutions, the idea of regenerative medicine such as MSC may prove to be a breakthrough strategy when it comes to treating BPD. The success in clinical trials led to the formulation of prospective MSC‐derived products such as PNEUMOSTEM®, and there is the possibility of a stem cell medication and permanent treatment for BPD in the near future.

KGaA, Weinheim Long-term implantation of biomedical electronics into the human body enables advanced diagnostic and therapeutic functionalities. However, most long-term resident electronics devices require invasive procedures for implantation as well as a specialized receiver for communication. Here, a gastric resident electronic (GRE) system that leverages the anatomical space offered by the gastric environment to enable residence of an orally delivered platform of such devices within the human body is presented. The GRE is capable of directly interfacing with portable consumer personal electronics through Bluetooth, a widely adopted wireless protocol. In contrast to the passive day-long gastric residence achieved with prior ingestible electronics, advancement in multimaterial prototyping enables the GRE to reside in the hostile gastric environment for a maximum of 36 d and maintain ≈15 d of wireless electronics communications as evidenced by the studies in a porcine model. Indeed, the synergistic integration of reconfigurable gastric-residence structure, drug release modules, and wireless electronics could ultimately enable the next-generation remote diagnostic and automated therapeutic strategies.

Abstract

The inhibition of carbohydrate-hydrolyzing enzymes in human digestive organs is crucial in controlling blood sugar levels, which is important in treating type 2 diabetes. In the current study, pahangensin A (1), a bis-labdanic diterpene characterized previously in the rhizomes of Alpinia pahangensis Ridl., was identified as an active dual inhibitor for α-amylase (IC50 =114.80 μm) and α-glucosidase (IC50 =153.87 μm). This is the first report on the dual α-amylase and α-glucosidase inhibitory activities of a bis-labdanic diterpene. The Lineweaver-Burk plots of compound 1 indicate that it is a mixed-type inhibitor with regard to both enzymes. Based on molecular docking studies, compound 1 docked in a non-active site of both enzymes. The dual inhibitory activity of compound 1 makes it a suitable natural alternative in the treatment of type 2 diabetes.

Abstract

A series of isomeric poly(ether ether ketone)s were synthesized using microwave-assisted method by nucleophilic substitution reaction of hydroquinone and 4,4′-biphenol with 4,4′-difluorobenzophenone (DFBP) or 2,4′-DFBP in the presence of anhydrous K2CO3. The polymers with inherent viscosities in the range of 0.20–0.71 dlg−1 were obtained in quantitative yields and had excellent thermal stability as shown by the temperature of 5% weight loss in nitrogen above 410°C. X-ray diffraction patterns confirmed the semicrystalline character of some of the polymers. The results also indicate that the reaction time was shortened remarkably and the reaction temperature could be controlled easily. POLYM. ENG. SCI., 2011. © 2010 Society of Plastics Engineers

Abstract

The electrolysis of catechol was studied in the pH values of 1 to 10. The results from the rotating ring-disk electrode (RRDE) experiments show that at low pH values, the electrochemical polymerization of catechol was performed by one step, and at higher pH values, the electrochemical polymerization of catechol was carried out by two steps, i.e. oxidation of catechol and followed by polymerization. The intermediates generated at the disk were detected at the ring electrode in the ring potential region of-0.2to 0 V (vs. Ag/AgCl). One of reasons for the decrease in the ratio of ir to id with increasing the ring potential is caused by formation of positively charged intermediates at the disk electrode. This ratio increases with increasing the rotation rate of the RRDE, which indicates that the intermediates are not stable. A shielding effect during polymerization of catechol was observed when the ring potential was set at 0.1 V (vs. Ag/AgCl). The electron spin resonance (ESR) of polycatechol shows that polycatechol possesses unpaired electrons. The images of polycatechol films synthesized at different conditions are described.

Abstract

Ruthenium catalysts supported on multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MCNTs) with different loadings (1% wt, 3% wt, 5% wt) were prepared by reduction with H2 or NaBH4 for selective hydrogenation of soybean oil at 338 K and initial pressure of 1.066 MPa. These catalysts were characterized using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), N2 adsorption–desorption, and H2-temperature programmed desorption (TPD) techniques. Ru particles were dispersed more homogeneously on the surface of the nanotubes after being reduced with H2 than with NaBH4. The catalysts with 3% and 5% Ru loadings had higher hydrogenation activity. The NaBH4-reduced catalyst had higher cis-isomer selectivity.

Abstract

Four Ru nanoparticles of different mean sizes from 1.13 to 17.22 nm were prepared and used as catalysts for the selective hydrogenation of polyunsaturated soybean oil at 353 K and initial pressure of 1.5 MPa. The catalyst with the smallest mean size (1.13 nm) had the lowest activity, the activity increased as the mean size increased to 3.10 nm, then decreased with further increase in the mean particle size. The cis–trans isomerization rate decreased with the increase in particle size.

Abstract

The composition of the volatile oil extracted by hydro-distillation from nutmeg pericarp and the component retention indices were determined by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry GC-MS The oil contains 16 monoterpenes (60%), nine monoterpene alcohols (29%), eight aromatic ethers (7%), three sesquiterpenes (1%), six esters (1%) and eight other minor components. The components are similar to those in nutmeg and mace oils but differ substantially in concentrations. The sabinene, myristicin and safrole concentrations are much lower while the terpinen-4-ol and α-terpineol contents are much higher than in nutmeg and mace oils. © 1999 Society of Chemical Industry

Abstract

Two algorithms for eigenvalue problems in piezoelectric finite element analyses are introduced. The first algorithm involves the use of Lanczos method with a new matrix storage scheme, while the second algorithm uses a Rayleigh quotient iteration scheme. In both solution methods, schemes are implemented to reduce storage requirements and solution time. Both solution methods also seek to preserve the sparsity structure of the stiffness matrix to realize major savings in memory. In the Lanczos method with the new storage scheme, the bandwidth of the stiffness matrix is optimized by mixing the electrical degree of freedom with the mechanical degrees of freedom. The unique structural pattern of the consistent mass matrix is exploited to reduce storage requirements. These major reductions in memory requirements for both the stiffness and mass matrices also provided large savings in computational time. In the Rayleigh quotient iteration method, an algorithm for generating good initial eigenpairs is employed to improve its overall convergence rate, and its convergence stability in the regions of closely spaced eigenvalues and repeated eigenvalues. The initial eigenvectors are obtained by interpolation from a coarse mesh. In order for this multi-mesh iterative method to be effective, an eigenvector of interest in the fine mesh must resemble an eigenvector in the coarse mesh. Hence, the method is effective for finding the set of eigenpairs in the low-frequency range, while the Lanczos method with a mixed electromechanical matrix can be used for any frequency range. Results of example problems are presented to show the savings in solution time and storage requirements of the proposed algorithms when compared with the existing algorithms in the literature.
