Abstract MXene materials have emerged as promising candidates for solving sustainable energy storage solutions due to their unique properties and versatility. MXene materials can not only be used directly as electrode materials but can also be used as functional materials to solve problems such as poor conductivity of electrode materials, severe volume expansion, dendrites, and dissolution of electrode materials. This perspective paper explores the potential applications of MXene materials for sustainable energy storage solutions, emphasizing their distinct characteristics and applications across various domains.

Abstract The restacking and oxidizable nature of vanadium‐based carbon/nitride (V2C‐MXene) poses a significant challenge. Herein, tellurium (Te)‐doped V2C/V2O3 electrocatalyst is constructed via mild H2O2 oxidation and calcination treatments. Especially, this work rationally exploits the inherent easy oxidation characteristic associated with MXene to alter the interfacial information, thereby obtaining stable self‐generated vanadium‐based heterointerfaces. Meanwhile, the microetching effect of H2O2 creates numerous pores to address the restacking issues. Besides, Te element doping settles the issue of awkward levels of absorption/desorption ability of intermediates. The electrocatalyst obtains an unparalleled hydrogen evolution reaction and oxygen evolution reaction with the overpotential of 83.5 and 279.8 mV at −10 and 10 mA cm−2, respectively. In addition, the overall water‐splitting device demonstrates a low cell voltage of 1.41 V to obtain 10 mA cm−2. Overall, the inherent drawbacks of MXene can be turned into benefits based on the planning strategy to create these electrocatalysts with desirable reaction kinetics.

Abstract MXene is investigated as an electrode material for different energy storage systems due to layered structures and metal‐like electrical conductivity. Experimental results show MXenes possess excellent cycling performance as anode materials, especially at large current densities. However, the reversible capacity is relatively low, which is a significant barrier to meeting the demands of industrial applications. This work synthesizes N‐doped graphene‐like carbon (NGC) intercalated Ti3C2Tx (NGC‐Ti3C2Tx) van der Waals heterostructure by an in situ method. The as‐prepared NGC‐Ti3C2Tx van der Waals heterostructure is employed as sodium‐ion and lithium‐ion battery electrodes. For sodium‐ion batteries, a reversible specific capacity of 305 mAh g−1 is achieved at a specific current of 20 mA g−1, 2.3 times higher than that of Ti3C2Tx. For lithium‐ion batteries, a reversible capacity of 400 mAh g−1 at a specific current of 20 mA g−1 is 1.5 times higher than that of Ti3C2Tx. Both sodium‐ion and lithium‐ion batteries made from NGC‐Ti3C2Tx shows high cycling stability. The theoretical calculations also verify the remarkable improvement in battery capacity within the NGC‐Ti3C2O2 system, attributed to the additional adsorption of working ions at the edge states of NGC. This work offers an innovative way to synthesize a new van der Waals heterostructure and provides a new route to improve the electrochemical performance significantly.

Abstract Patients who have non‐small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) with epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutations are more prone to brain metastasis (BM) and poor prognosis. Previous studies showed that the tumor microenvironment of BM in these patients is immunosuppressed, as indicated by reduced T‐cell abundance and activity, although the mechanism of this immunosuppression requires further study. This study shows that reactive astrocytes play a critical role in promoting the immune escape of BM from EGFR‐mutated NSCLC by increasing the apoptosis of CD8+ T lymphocytes. The increased secretion of interleukin 11(IL11) by astrocytes promotes the expression of PDL1 in BM, and this is responsible for the increased apoptosis of T lymphocytes. IL11 functions as a ligand of EGFR, and this binding activates EGFR and downstream signaling to increase the expression of PDL1, culminating in the immune escape of tumor cells. IL11 also promotes immune escape by binding to its intrinsic receptor (IL11Rα/glycoprotein 130 [gp130]). Additional in vivo studies show that the targeted inhibition of gp130 and EGFR suppresses the growth of BM and prolongs the survival time of mice. These results suggest a novel therapeutic strategy for treatment of NSCLC patients with EGFR mutations.

Abstract It is well‐known that muscle regeneration declines with aging, and aged muscles undergo degenerative atrophy or sarcopenia. While exercise and acute injury are both known to induce muscle regeneration, the molecular signals that help trigger muscle regeneration have remained unclear. Here, mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) is used to show that injured muscles induce a specific subset of prostanoids during regeneration, including PGG1, PGD2, and the prostacyclin PGI2. The spike in prostacyclin promotes skeletal muscle regeneration via myoblasts, and declines with aging. Mechanistically, the prostacyclin spike promotes a spike in PPARγ/PGC1a signaling, which induces a spike in fatty acid oxidation (FAO) to control myogenesis. LC–MS/MS and MSI further confirm that an early FAO spike is associated with normal regeneration, but muscle FAO became dysregulated during aging. Functional experiments demonstrate that the prostacyclin‐PPARγ/PGC1a‐FAO spike is necessary and sufficient to promote both young and aged muscle regeneration, and that prostacyclin can synergize with PPARγ/PGC1a‐FAO signaling to restore aged muscles’ regeneration and physical function. Given that the post‐injury prostacyclin‐PPARγ‐FAO spike can be modulated pharmacologically and via post‐exercise nutrition, this work has implications for how prostacyclin‐PPARγ‐FAO might be fine‐tuned to promote regeneration and treat muscle diseases of aging.

Abstract The Hangenberg Crisis coincided with a large decline of biodiversity and widespread anoxia in the end‐Devonian ocean. Previous research attributed marine anoxia to the spread of deeply‐rooted plants and/or increased volcanism on the continents, but crucial links have not been thoroughly explored. Herein, we propose enhanced weathering as a key trigger, as evidenced by a negative shift (∼8‰) in lithium isotopes and a coupled response in carbon isotopes of marine carbonates in South China. Our findings imply that rapid weathering of crustal rocks increased nutrient delivery to the ocean, as indicated by an increase in the carbonate‐associated phosphate levels, contributing to oceanic eutrophication. In the absence of massive volcanic emissions and intense orogeny, the cause of enhanced continental weathering was likely the expansion of the terrestrial rhizosphere, highlighting the potential for land plant evolution to initiate weathering changes of sufficient severity to trigger a major bio/environmental crisis in the Earth system.

Abstract Age‐associated obesity and muscle atrophy (sarcopenia) are intimately connected and are reciprocally regulated by adipose tissue and skeletal muscle dysfunction. During ageing, adipose inflammation leads to the redistribution of fat to the intra‐abdominal area (visceral fat) and fatty infiltrations in skeletal muscles, resulting in decreased overall strength and functionality. Lipids and their derivatives accumulate both within and between muscle cells, inducing mitochondrial dysfunction, disturbing β‐oxidation of fatty acids, and enhancing reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, leading to lipotoxicity and insulin resistance, as well as enhanced secretion of some pro‐inflammatory cytokines. In turn, these muscle‐secreted cytokines may exacerbate adipose tissue atrophy, support chronic low‐grade inflammation, and establish a vicious cycle of local hyperlipidaemia, insulin resistance, and inflammation that spreads systemically, thus promoting the development of sarcopenic obesity (SO). We call this the metabaging cycle. Patients with SO show an increased risk of systemic insulin resistance, systemic inflammation, associated chronic diseases, and the subsequent progression to full‐blown sarcopenia and even cachexia. Meanwhile in many cardiometabolic diseases, the ostensibly protective effect of obesity in extremely elderly subjects, also known as the ‘obesity paradox’, could possibly be explained by our theory that many elderly subjects with normal body mass index might actually harbour SO to various degrees, before it progresses to full‐blown severe sarcopenia. Our review outlines current knowledge concerning the possible chain of causation between sarcopenia and obesity, proposes a solution to the obesity paradox, and the role of fat mass in ageing.

Abstract Two‐dimensional (2D) layered transition metal carbides/nitrides, called MXenes, are attractive alternative electrode materials for electrochemical energy storage. Owing to their metallic electrical conductivity and low ion diffusion barrier, MXenes are promising anode materials for sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs). Herein, we report on a new 2D carbonitride MXene, viz., Ti2C0.5N0.5Tx (Tx stands for surface terminations), and the only second carbonitride after Ti3CNTx so far. A new type of in situ HF (HCl/KF) etching condition was employed to synthesize multilayer Ti2C0.5N0.5Tx powders from Ti2AlC0.5N0.5. Spontaneous intercalation of tetramethylammonium followed by sonication in water allowed for large‐scale delamination of this new titanium carbonitride into 2D sheets. Multilayer Ti2C0.5N0.5Tx powders showed higher specific capacities and larger electroactive surface area than those of Ti2CTx powders. Multilayer Ti2C0.5N0.5Tx powders show a specific capacity of 182 mAh g−1 at 20 mA g−1, the highest among all reported MXene electrodes as SIBs with excellent cycling stability.

Outer hair cells (OHCs) damage is a general phenomenon in clinical disorders such as noise-induced hearing loss and drug-induced hearing loss. In order to elucidate the mechanism underlying these disorders, OHCs – its diseased region needs to be deeply investigated. However, OHCs array on the basilar membrane which contains massive cells with different types. Therefore, to isolate OHCs from this huge population is significant for revealing its pathological and molecular changes during disease processing. In the present study, we tried to isolate OHCs from the commonly used animal model –Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats. By separating outer hair cells from SD rats with different day ages, we found that 9 days after birth was a suitable time for the separation of the OHCs. At this time, the number of OHCs isolated from rats was large, and the cell morphology was typical of cylindrical shape. OHCs isolated using this method are histologically suitable and quantitatively adequate for molecular biological and electrophysiological analyses.
