2. Multi-stage cold energy recovery/utilization: A 10 MW class cold store with liquefied natural gas

Abstract

In coastal cities, a large amount of cold energy is released into the nearby seawater during the process of regasification of liquefied natural gas (LNG) at the receiving terminal, and meanwhile, a large amount of exported and/or imported foods need to be frozen by bulk cold energy near the sea. In this paper, a new multistage cold energy recovery/utilization system is investigated to link the LNG cold energy directly to supply the coastal cold store. This design uses a realistic case in Ningbo LNG receiving station in China, and for the very first time considers how to utilize the LNG cold energy in an efficient manner regarding the technical, economic, and environmental benefits. A three‐stage LNG cold energy utilization system is designed and evaluated by considering different temperatures, pressures, and heat exchange parameters. Compared to conventional electric‐driven cold stores, the proposed multistage cold energy recovery/utilization system has a much cheaper capital cost during the initial investment stage, and also avoids the utility power consumption during the daily operation period. In the case study, from Ningbo LNG receiving station to a 10 MW class cold store, the proposed multienergy system can save the energy of 20.05 kilotons of standard coal, and the carbon emission reduction is up to 1.49 × 108 kg per year.

Abstract

Nowadays most photovoltaic (PV) plants usually use battery energy storage technology to smooth fluctuant power, but batteries have the drawbacks of a short lifetime and environmental pollution. The existing renewable power networks have serious problems with decarbonizing electricity on the end‐user side. This paper investigates a new hybrid photovoltaic‐liquid air energy storage (PV‐LAES) system to provide solutions for the low‐carbon transition for future power and energy networks. In this article, a local PV power plant cooperates with its maximum power point tracking (MPPT)‐based boost converter, to generate low‐carbon electricity with some uncertain fluctuations. Then a zero‐emission‐air‐based LAES unit is used to absorb the surplus power from the PV plant, and also compensate power for the local load with inadequate power level. This makes the new system save a large proportion of power from main grids, which can also indirectly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. For the MW‐class PV‐LAES case, results show that the surplus renewable electricity (6.73 MWh) generates 27.12 tons of liquid air for energy backups during the day time, and then the LAES unit has a round‐trip efficiency of 47.4% that can discharge a flexible power compensation to the load in the night. Accordingly, the grid power demand reduces significantly from 12.78 to 3.33 MWh in a day. In this way, the annual power savings is estimated to be 3449.25 MWh, and the corresponding carbon emission can be reduced by 2607.63 tons. Regarding the economic performance, the PV‐LAES system presents a dynamic payback period of 9.33 years and an accumulated life‐cycle net profit of $2,260,011. Overall, the proposed PV‐LAES scheme is economically feasible from a life‐cycle perspective, and can potentially realize flexible energy interaction with local renewables to achieve an integrated low‐carbon power generation and storage system.

Abstract

Objective\ud We aimed to characterize the demographics of adults with dissociative (nonepileptic) seizures, placing emphasis on distribution of age at onset, male:female ratio, levels of deprivation, and dissociative seizure semiology.\ud \ud Methods\ud We collected demographic and clinical data from 698 adults with dissociative seizures recruited to the screening phase of the CODES (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy vs Standardised Medical Care for Adults With Dissociative Non‐Epileptic Seizures) trial from 27 neurology/specialist epilepsy clinics in the UK. We described the cohort in terms of age, age at onset of dissociative seizures, duration of seizure disorder, level of socioeconomic deprivation, and other social and clinical demographic characteristics and their associations.\ud \ud Results\ud In what is, to date, the largest study of adults with dissociative seizures, the overall modal age at dissociative seizure onset was 19 years; median age at onset was 28 years. Although 74% of the sample was female, importantly the male:female ratio varied with age at onset, with 77% of female but only 59% of male participants developing dissociative seizures by the age of 40 years. The frequency of self‐reported previous epilepsy was 27%; nearly half of these epilepsy diagnoses were retrospectively considered erroneous by clinicians. Patients with predominantly hyperkinetic dissociative seizures had a shorter disorder duration prior to diagnosis in this study than patients with hypokinetic seizures (P < .001); dissociative seizure type was not associated with gender. Predominantly hyperkinetic seizures were most commonly seen in patients with symptom onset in their late teens. Thirty percent of the sample reported taking antiepileptic drugs; this was more common in men. More than 50% of the sample lived in areas characterized by the highest levels of deprivation, and more than two‐thirds were unemployed.\ud \ud Significance\ud Females with dissociative seizures were more common at all ages, whereas the proportion of males increased with age at onset. This disorder was associated with socioeconomic deprivation. Those with hypokinetic dissociative seizures may be at risk for delayed diagnosis and treatment.

13. Rediscovered analyses of Chinese bronzes from Oxford

Abstract

We report here the rediscovery of the chemical analyses of approximately 540 Chinese bronze objects, carried out in RLAHA in the late 1950s by optical emission spectrometry. Although largely of historical interest, they do in fact even now approximately double the number analyses of Chinese bronze objects which contain data on both major and minor elements. In fact, the other major equivalent data set from the Freer Gallery and the Sackler Collection are of approximately the same vintage. We attempt to evaluate the quality of the data, and address a controversy which appeared in the literature during the 1960s and 1970s about the value of arsenic measurements in Chinese bronzes as an indicator of authenticity.

Abstract

In today’s world, clean energy technologies, which include energy storage and conversion, play the most important role in the sustainable development of human society, and are becoming the most critical elements in overcoming fossil fuel exhaustion and global pollution. Among clean energy technologies, electrochemical technologies are considered the most feasible, environmentally friendly and sustainable. Electrochemical energy technologies such as secondary (or rechargeable) batteries and fuel cells have been invented and used, or will be used in several important application areas such as transportation, stationary, and portable/micro power. With increasing demand in both energy and power densities of these electrochemical energy devices in various new application areas, further research and development are essential to overcome challenges such as cost and durability, which are considered major obstacles hindering their applications and commercialization. In order to facilitate this new exploration, we believe that a book covering all important areas of electrochemical energy technologies for clean energy storage and conversion, giving an overall picture about these technologies, should be highly desired. The proposed book will give a comprehensive description of electrochemical energy conversion and storage methods and the latest development, including batteries, fuel cells, supercapacitors, hydrogen generation and storage, as well as solar energy conversion. It addresses a variety of topics such as electrochemical processes, materials, components, assembly and manufacturing, degradation mechanisms, as well as challenges and strategies.
