Abstract

We provide an update on the state of play with regards a newly described inflammatory condition which has arisen during the current SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. The condition has been named paediatric inflammatory multisystem syndrome temporally associated with SARS-CoV-2 or multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children. This condition has shown significant similarities to Kawasaki disease and toxic shock syndrome.

Abstract

Molecular ordering in polymers can have a drastic effect on their properties, and can be used to induce or enhance functionality. In the case of poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), which is a widely used polymer in biomedicine, sensors and actuators, preferential orientation of chains can lead to significantly enhanced electromechanical properties. In this context, template-wetting is a straightforward method of producing polymer nanostructures, which can lead to some degree of molecular order in the polymer. Template-wetting of PLLA has not been fully explored, especially in terms of morphological and/or structural characterisation. In this work, PLLA nanotubes are grown via a modification of the template-wetting process, referred to here as melt-press template-wetting. The nanotubes are thoroughly characterised with wide-angle X-ray diffraction, isothermal differential scanning calorimetry and polarised light optical microscopy. This characterisation indicates that the polymer chains in these PLLA nanotubes are aligned parallel to the cylindrical axis of the nanotube, which may be beneficial in certain applications.

Abstract

Twenty patients were studied prospectively with indium-labeled leukocyte imaging to evaluate its effectiveness in differentiating noninfected delayed or nonunion from osteomyelitis complicating these entities. All patients underwent an open surgical procedure within 24 h of the scan. Bone specimens from the nonunion site were obtained for microbiological and histological analysis to confirm the presence or absence of osteomyelitis. In these twenty patients, the sensitivity of the indium scintigraphy was 100%, the specificity 100%, and the overall accuracy 100%. Indium-labeled leukocyte scintigraphy is significantly more accurate than /sup 99m/technetium and /sup 67/gallium imaging had been, when studied earlier, in detecting subclinical osteomyelitis complicating nonunion. Indium-labeled leukocyte scintigraphy should supplant sequential technetium and gallium studies in this patient population when the surgeon must determine whether subclinical osteomyelitis is complicating fracture management of delayed and nonunions.
