The fluorescent functional material prepared by combining 16‐alkyl (ferrocenyl‐methyl) ammonium bromide (Fc16AB) and dye molecule Congo red (CR) via ionic self‐assembly strategy exhibits double stimuli‐responsive behavior triggered by redox and pH value. Both the fabrication and switching mechanism of aggregates are proposed according to the cooperative binding of noncovalent interactions, including π‐π stacking, electrostatic interactions, charge transfer interaction, and amphiphilic hydrophobic association. The optimal geometry and energy transfer between monomers and aggregate are studied by means of quantum chemistry calculation and wavefunction analysis, which provides a deep and theoretical understanding for formation mechanism of ionic self‐assemblies. Moreover, the fluorescent switching behavior of assemblies upon pH was studied in detail, which opens the new way for the construction of organic light‐emitting diode (OLED).

Herein, we found that serum chemokine ligand 14 (CXCL14) was significantly enhanced in patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). In our current study, mouse L929 fibroblasts were stimulated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) (100 ng/mL). Cell proliferation, the levels of matrix metalloproteinase 2 (MMP2) and MMP9, as well as extracellular matrix (ECM) content were assessed to evaluate the fibrogenesis of L929 cells. Proliferating cell nuclear antigen and cell viability were assessed to evaluate cell proliferation. Hydroxyproline (Hyp), collagen I/III, connective tissue growth factor (CTGF), and phosphorylated Smad2/3 (p-Smad2/3) were assessed to evaluate ECM secretion and deposition. α-Smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) was used to measure the occurrence of differentiation from fibroblast toward myofibroblast. Our data suggested that knockdown of CXCL14 prevented LPS-induced fibrogenesis of L929 cells through inhibiting cell proliferation and decreasing the expression of MMP2/9, Hyp, collagen I/III, CTGF, p-Smad2/3, and α-SMA. Notably, upregulation of protein phosphatase magnesium-dependent 1A (PPM1A) was involved in this process. On the contrary, recombinant CXCL14 protein led to an opposite effect. We first suggested that overexpression of PPM1A ameliorated LPS-induced fibrogenesis. Furthermore, we substantiated that knockdown of CXCL14 exerted an antifibrotic effect in IPF in vitro probably via the upregulation of PPM1A. Besides, evidently enhanced CXCL14, yet reduced PPM1A, was found in bleomycin-induced rat pulmonary fibrosis, confirming the roles of CXCL14 and its potential association with PPM1A in IPF in vivo. In conclusion, CXCL14 could be considered as a therapeutic target for preventing fibrogenesis of mouse L929 fibroblasts.

Silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) of improved thermal stability against long-term aggregation were prepared using the polystyrene-b-poly(4-vinylpyridine)-b-polystyrene (PS-b-P4VP-b-PS) triblock copolymer as a multidentate ligand. First, PS-b-P4VP-b-PS was synthesized by sequential reversible addition–fragmentation transfer (RAFT) polymerization of styrene and 4-vinylpydine using a trithiocarbonate chain transfer agent (CTA). Then Ag NPs were obtained by in situ reduction of silver nitrate using PS-b-P4VP-b-PS as a multidentate ligand. The obtained Ag NPs were stable in solution for at least 24 h while being heated at 110°C. The effect of the molar ratio of N atoms of the P4VP chain segment and AgNO3 on the stability of Ag NPs was studied, and the results suggested that Ag NPs were very stable even if the molar ratio of N atoms of the P4VP chain segment and AgNO3 was very low. This method is promising to scale up the preparation of metal NPs with good dispersibility and thermal stability, which still remains challenging. To further improve its thermal stability, 1,4-dibromobutane was used to chemically crosslink the P4VP chain segment in solution. However, the results proved that the crosslink method is infeasible to further improve the thermal stability of Ag NPs in this system.

Objectives The purpose of this study was to determine the diagnostic and prognostic values of serum KL-6 levels in Chinese patients with interstitial lung disease (ILDs). Methods A total of 1084 subjects including 373 cases of ILDs, 584 cases of non-ILD pulmonary diseases, and 127 healthy individuals were recruited from three clinical centers in China between January 2011 and December 2013. A total of 106 patients undergoing treatments for ILDs in Shanghai Pulmonary Hospital between January 2011 and December 2013 were enrolled. Baseline and posttreatment serum KL-6 levels were determined. Ionic self-assembly, the combination of the building blocks with opposite charge by electrostatic association, has many merits, such as simple, cheap and easy to get, flexible reversible and wide range of applications. In this paper, fibres were synthesized by combining surfactant N, N-dimethylferrocenylmethyl hexadecyl-ammonium bromide (Fc16AB) and fluorescent dye methyl orange (MO) using ionic self-assembly techniques. The morphology of self-assemblies with different concentration are measured and characterized by optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results show that the concentration of Fc16AB and MO has great effects on the morphology of obtained microfibers.

Porous reticular tin–iron oxide composite have been prepared by electrostatic spray deposition method for lithium-ion batteries. The structure of depsitied electrodes are investigated by X-ray Diffraction (XRD), which shows that the film is amorphous. Electrochemical characterization by galvanostatic charge-discharge tests demonstrate that the conversion reactions in these electrodes enable initial discharge capacities of about 1551 mAh/g for tin–iron oxide thin film electrode, and the reversible capacity stayed in the range of 769–601 mAh/g during the successive 30 cycles. The high porosity of the 3D reticular structure can provide more reaction sites on the electrode surface and accommodate volume variation of Sn particles during Li alloying–dealloying. Such a composite film are expected to be applied as attractive anodes for lithium-ion batteries.

The stimuli-responsive vesicles were prepared via electrochemical oxidation on the mixture solution of ferrocenylmethyl-trimethylammonium iodide (FcMI) and sodium deoxycholate (NaDC). The vesicle structure and morphology are characterized respectively by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The vesicle shells can be clearly observed by TEM with the thickness ranging from several to several tens of nanometers and their outer diameters at the range of 50-200 nm. The formation of vesicular structures is also supported via AFM measurements, and the ratio of the diameter and height of the nanospheres was estimated to be ca. 10, indicating the shell collapse. The obtained results are significant for the preparation of smart supramolecular aggregates.

We hypothesized that moderate cardiac-selective overexpression of the angiotensin II type 2 receptor (AT2R) would protect the myocardium from ischaemic injury after a myocardial infarction (MI) induced by coronary artery ligation. For in vitro studies, adenoviral vector expressing genomic DNA of AT2R and enhanced green fluorescence protein (EGFP) was used to overexpress AT2R in rat neonatal cardiac myocytes. Expression of AT2R, measured by real-time PCR and immunostaining, demonstrated efficient transduction of AT2R in a dose-dependent pattern. The AT2R constitutively induced apoptosis in rat neonatal cardiac myocytes in dose-dependent patterns. For in vivo studies, 4 × 1010 vector genomes (vg) of recombinant adeno-associated virus serotype 9 (rAAV9)-chicken β actin promoter-AT2R was injected into the left ventricle of 5-day-old Sprague–Dawley rats. At 6 weeks of age, hearts were harvested and expression of AT2R determined by real-time PCR and Western blotting. Expression was increased onefold over control hearts, and no apoptosis was detected. Two subsequent in vivo studies were performed. In a prevention study, 4 × 1010 vg of rAAV9-CBA-AT2R was injected into the left ventricle of 5-day-old Sprague–Dawley rats and MI was induced at 6 weeks of age. For a post-treatment study, 4 × 1010 vg of rAAV9-CBA-AT2R was administrated to the peri-infarcted myocardium area immediately after MI in 6-week-old animals. For both in vivo studies, cardiac functions were assessed using echocardiography and haemodynamic measurements 4 weeks after coronary artery ligation. In the in vivo studies, the rats subjected to MI showed significant decreases in fractional shortening and rate of change of left ventricular pressure, with increased left ventricular end-diastolic pressure and ventricular hypertrophy. For the prevention study, the moderate cardiac-selective overexpression of AT2R attenuated these MI-induced impairments and also caused a decrease in ventricular wall thinning. In the post-treatment study, the overexpression of AT2R partly reversed the MI-induced cardiac dysfunction. Myocardial infarction also induced the upregulation of angiotensin II type 1 receptor, angiotensin-converting enzyme and collagen I mRNA expression, all of which were attenuated by the overexpression of AT2R. It is concluded that moderate cardiac-selective overexpression of AT2R protects heart function from ischaemic injury, which may be mediated, at least in part, through modulation of components of the cardiac renin–angiotensin system and collagen levels in the myocardium.

Two kinds of topochemical conversion routes from cobalt hydroxide precursors to cobalt oxide-based porous nanostructures are presented: pyrolysis in air and hydrothermal treatment by the Kirkendall diffusion effect. These cobalt hydroxide precursors were synthesized by a simple hydrothermal approach with sodium acetate as mineralizer at 200 °C. Detailed proof indicates that the process of cobalt hydroxide precursor growth is dominated by a nucleation, dissolution, renucleation, growth, and exfoliation mechanism. By the topochemical conversion processes several Co(3)O(4) nanostructures, such as cobalt oxide-coated cobalt hydroxide carbonate nanowires, cobalt oxide nanotubes, hollow cobalt oxide spheres, and porous cobalt oxide nanowires, have been synthesized. The obtained Co(3)O(4) nanostructures have also been evaluated as the anode materials in lithium-ion batteries. It was found that the as-prepared Co(3)O(4) nanostructures exhibited high reversible capacity and good cycle performance due to their porous structure and small size.

Graphene-like large-area Ni3S2 nanosheets are obtained via hydrothermally assisted sulfurization of nickel foam in an aqueous solution of MeCSNH2 (autoclave, 120 °C, 4 h).

Gene therapy has a distinct potential to treat kidney diseases. However, the efficient transduction of a significant number of renal cells by viral vectors has been difficult to accomplish. Previous studies indicate that adeno-associated virus (AAV) can transduce renal cells with variable and suboptimal efficiency. Because new and innovative mutants of AAV are now available, we compared their efficacy in transducing rat kidneys. We compared five types of AAV mutants (AAV2 mut-triple, AAV2 sextuple, AAV8 mut447, AAV8 mut733 and AAV9 mut446) carrying a green fluorescence protein (GFP) reporter gene. A pressure microinjection technique was used to inject either 1.5 × 10(11) vector genome (vg) AAV mutants or three dose of AAV2 sextuple into the renal cortex of rats. The microinjection approach has not been used in AAV-mediated renal gene transfer thus far. Slow and sustained microinjection enables continuous administration of the viral vector to the kidney cortex and limits any damage to the kidney, because the tip of a glass micropipette is very small. Three weeks after injection, the kidneys were collected and evaluated for GFP expression. Among the various mutated AAV serotypes studied, only AAV2 sextuple showed robust GFP expression in renal tissue. The AAV2 sextuple serotype appears to be an efficient gene transfer vector to preferentially target renal tubular epithelial cells. A combination of the AAV2 sextuple and the microinjection technique holds the key to the future of therapeutic treatments for kidney diseases.

The composite electrode of platinum-modified polyaniline film is formed in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 + 3 mM H 2 PtCl 6 solution by cyclic potential or constant potential deposition of platinum particles in polyaniline film. To make a comparison, the polyaniline film with the same initial thickness and structure is also treated with the cyclic potential or constant potential polarization in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 solution. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) of the composite electrode of platinum-modified polyaniline film is studied in sulfuric acid solution and compared with the EIS of the polyaniline film without platinum dispersion. The results show that the different modes of potential polarization affect greatly the nature and distribution of the platinum particles, instead of the structure of the polyaniline film (matrix). The electrode reaction kinetics and mass transport process parameters involving charge transfer resistance (R c t ), double layer capacitance (C d l ), constant phase elements (CPE) and Warburg impedance in platinum substrate/platinum-modified polyaniline film/solution interface are discussed on the basis of the interpretation of the characteristic impedance spectra and connected to the electrocatalytic activity on the oxidation of methanol molecules.
