The ecosystems of the Tibetan Plateau (TP) provide multiple important ecosystem services that benefit both local populations and those beyond, such as through climate regulation services on precipitation for East Asia and China. However, the precipitation regulation service of the TP ecosystems for supplying moisture and maintaining precipitation is yet to be evaluated. In this study, we used the moisture recycling framework and a moisture tracking model to quantify the precipitation regulation services of TP ecosystems for their contribution to precipitation. We found TP ecosystems contributed substantially to local and downwind precipitation, with a contribution of 221 mm/year for the TP and neighboring areas through evapotranspiration (ET) (104 mm/year through transpiration), declined to10 mm/year for eastern China and other surrounding countries. Among ecosystem types, grassland contributed most to precipitation, followed by barren and snow lands, forests, and shrublands. In terms of seasonality, precipitation contribution from TP ecosystems was greater in summer months than in non-summer months for western China, while the opposite was true for eastern China-although the magnitude was much smaller. Over the past two decades, the significant ET increases in TP translated to a widespread increase in precipitation contribution for TP and downwind beneficiary regions from 2000 to 2020. Our study provides a quantitative way to understand the precipitation regulation services of TP ecosystems through moisture recycling, substantiating their key role to maintain precipitation and the water cycle for downwind regions-effectively acting as an ecological safeguard that could be perceived by the public.

The diagnostic criteria for Parkinson's disease (PD) remain complex, which is especially problematic for nonmovement disorder experts. A test is required to establish a diagnosis of PD with improved accuracy and reproducibility.The study aimed to investigate the sensitivity and specificity of tests using sniffer dogs to diagnose PD.A prospective, diagnostic case-control study was conducted in four tertiary medical centers in China to evaluate the accuracy of sniffer dogs to distinguish between 109 clinically established medicated patients with PD, 654 subjects without PD, 37 drug-naïve patients with PD, and 185 non-PD controls. The primary outcomes were sensitivity and specificity of sniffer dog's identification.In the study with patients who were medicated, when two or all three sniffer dogs yielded positive detection results in a sample tested, the index test sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative likelihood ratios were 91% (95% CI: 84%-96%), 95% (95% CI: 93%-97%), and 19.16 (95% CI: 13.52-27.16) and 0.10 (95% CI: 0.05-0.17), respectively. The corresponding sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative likelihood ratios in patients who were drug-naïve were 89% (95% CI: 75%-96%), 86% (95% CI: 81%-91%), and 6.6 (95% CI: 4.51-9.66) and 0.13 (95% CI: 0.05-0.32), respectively.Tests using sniffer dogs may be a useful, noninvasive, fast, and cost-effective method to identify patients with PD in community screening and health prevention checkups as well as in neurological practice. © 2022 International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society.

The epidemiology of hepatitis C virus varies widely across geographical regions and ethnic groups. Our previous study showed that 6 strains isolated from Baisha County, Hainan Island, China, were all new genotype 6 (gt6) subtypes which differed significantly from subtypes of other regions. In the current study, we conducted a comprehensive epidemiological survey of HCV in the Li ethnic group, native to Baisha County. Anti-HCV antibodies were detected by 2 independent ELISAs in all participants, and positive results confirmed by the recombinant immunoblot assay (RIBA) and HCV RNA viral loads were measured. Univariate chi-square test and multivariable logistic regression analyses were used to determine the risk factors for HCV infection and spontaneous clearance rates. Indeterminate RIBA results were excluded or included in analyses; consequently, findings were expressed as a range. Direct sequencing of partial regions within NS5B and E1 was employed for genotyping. Among 1682 participants, 117 to 153 were anti-HCV positive (7.0%-9.1%), with 42.7%-52.6% confirmed to have cleared infection. Anti-HCV positivity was associated with older age (≥60 years) (OR = 0.02, 95% CI 0.01-0.05, P < 0.01) and surgery (OR = 2.75, 95% CI 1.36-5.57, P < 0.01), with no significant difference found between the HCV infection group and the HCV spontaneous clearance group. The gt6 subtype distribution characteristics of Baisha County were unique, complex and diverse. The sequences did not cluster with known gt6 subtypes but formed 4 Baisha community-specific groups. HCV infection in members of the Li minority ethnic group is characterized by high prevalence rates in the elderly, high spontaneous clearance rates and broad gt6 diversity.

Achieving efficient passivating carrier‐selective contacts (PCSCs) plays a critical role in high‐performance photovoltaic devices. However, it is still challenging to achieve both an efficient carrier selectivity and high‐level passivation in a sole interlayer due to the thickness dependence of contact resistivity and passivation quality. Herein, a light‐promoted adsorption method is demonstrated to establish high‐density Lewis base polyethylenimine (PEI) monolayers as promising PCSCs. The promoted adsorption is attributed to the enhanced electrostatic interaction between PEI and semiconductor induced by the photo‐generated carriers. The derived angstrom‐scale PEI monolayer is demonstrated to simultaneously provide a low‐resistance electrical contact for electrons, a high‐level field‐effect passivation to semiconductor surface and an enhanced interfacial dipole formation at contact interface. By implementing this light‐promoted adsorbed PEI as a single‐layered PCSC for n‐type silicon solar cell, an efficiency of 19.5% with an open‐circuit voltage of 0.641 V and a high fill factor of 80.7% is achieved, which is one of the best results for devices with solution‐processed electron‐selective contacts. Background Natural killer (NK) cells are critical components in innate immune response to viral infection. Killer cell immunoglobulin-like receptors (KIRs) are involved in regulating the balance of activation or inhibitory function of NK cells. However, the association of KIRs with the spontaneous clearance of hepatitis C virus (HCV) remains unclear in the Chinese population. Study design and methods A total of 407 HCV-seropositive voluntary blood donors were recruited, including 203 with spontaneous viral clearance and 204 with chronic infection. The presence of KIR genes was detected individually by polymerase chain reaction with sequence-specific primers. Data of HLA and interleukin-28B (IL28B) genotypes were extracted from our previous study. Results Our results showed that KIR2DL2, 2DS2, 2DL2/2DL3, and 2DL5A-/2DL5B+ were more frequent in subjects with HCV clearance than those with chronic infection (odds ratio [OR], 1.640, p = 0.034; OR, 1.664, p = 0.032; OR, 1.636, p = 0.040; and OR, 2.601, p = 0.012, respectively). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that KIR2DL5A-/2DL5B+ associated with HCV clearance (OR, 2.448, p = 0.027), independent of sex, IL28B, and other KIRs. In contrast, KIR2DL3/2DL3 (OR, 0.610, p = 0.034) as well as 2DL3/2DL3+HLA-C1 or C1C1 (OR, 0.580, p = 0.017; and OR, 0.639, p = 0.025, respectively) was found associated with chronic HCV infection. The presence of the homozygous KIR2DL3 with or without its HLA ligand increased the OR of developing chronic HCV infection in the context of IL28B. Conclusions In this study we identified KIR2DL5A-/2DL5B+ associated with HCV spontaneous clearance, while KIR2DL3/2DL3, 2DL3/2DL3+HLA-C1, or C1C1 associated with chronic infection. Our study highlighted the fact that the roles of KIR and KIR-HLA contributed to the control of HCV infection by innate immune responses.

To increase the target protein production and reduce acetic acid accumulation during fed-batch cultivation of recombinant Escherichia coli BL21 in a 30-L bioreactor, 12 different models of pulse feeding were performed to evaluate the effect of pulse feeding at different cultivation phases and pulse frequency on cell growth, acetic acid accumulation, and human-like collagen (HLC) synthesis. The results showed that the acetate concentration was kept at a low level (below 0.5 g/L) in all cases when pulse feeding was introduced before induction, whereas the pulse frequency affected cytoactivity significantly through cell growth rate, oxygen uptake rate, carbon dioxide evolution rate, and the synthesis of the target protein. The final biomass and HLC reached 75.46 and 7.26 g/L, respectively, in the model of 8-Sec feedings per 188 Sec. After induction, the pulse frequency had a great effect on HLC synthesis after high-temperature induction; low frequency was adverse to microorganisms. The model of 3-Sec feeding per 27 Sec was best and resulted in the highest biomass and HLC production. Compared to the pseudo-exponential feeding, pulse feeding reduced acetic acid accumulation effectively.

Summary The Jacobi, Gauss-Seidel and successive over-relaxation methods are well-known basic iterative methods for solving system of linear equations. In this paper, we extend those basic methods to solve the tensor equation Axm−1−b=0, where A is an mth-order n−dimensional symmetric tensor and b is an n-dimensional vector. Under appropriate conditions, we show that the proposed methods are globally convergent and locally r-linearly convergent. Taking into account the special structure of the Newton method for the problem, we propose a Newton-Gauss-Seidel method, which is expected to converge faster than the above methods. The proposed methods can be extended to solve a general symmetric tensor equations. Our preliminary numerical results show the effectiveness of the proposed methods.

The compatible zwitterionic copolymers of poly(methyl methacrylate [3-(methacryloylamino)propyl]dimethyl(3-sulfopropyl)ammonium-hydroxide) p(MMA-MPDSAH) with different MPDSAH ratio are synthesized by free radical polymerization. A serial of copolymers are obtained successfully with narrow molecular weight dispersion. The MPDSAH branch ratio varies from 5% to 20%. It is initially applied to fabricate enduringly antifouling poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membrane through a simple approach of blending by thermally induced phase separation (TIPS). The influence of zwitterionic copolymer on membrane morphology is studied by scanning electron microscopy. It was proven effective to improve the hydrophilic property of PVDF membrane as the water contact angles dramatically decreased from 80° to 40°, leading to a significant enhancement of antifouling ability. The absorbed bull serum albumin (BSA) content on modified membranes has cut almost 50%. The residual content of p(MMA-MPDSAH) in membrane is over 40% and able to reach 80% even at vigorous rinsing by controlling copolymer structure. Genetically resistant CBA and A/J mice and susceptible BALB/c and C57BL/6 mice were challenged with either an identical infective dose or a minimal lethal dose of Salmonella typhimurium. The histopathological progression of the disease was examined in tissue sections prepared by the JB-4 Plus resin embedding method and compared between the resistant and susceptible mice. In a fatal disease, the lesions in both animal hosts began with focal abscesses within the first three days post infection. Mononuclear cell infiltration started by day 4 and transformed the lesions into granulomata. Well-formed granulomata were evident by day 7 and persisted in sublethally infected resistant mice. Massive bacterial proliferation and extensive tissue degeneration marked the terminal stage of a lethal challenge. There were no distinguishable features that would identify the tissue response to infection in a resistant host from a susceptible one, except that the lesions in the sublethally infected resistant mice advanced slower and were discrete and self-limiting.

Nonlinear complementarity problem (NCP) is a wide class of problems. In this paper, some two-level additive Schwarz algorithms for NCPs with an M-function are developed and analyzed. The algorithms are proved to be convergent monotonically and can reach the solution of the problem within finite steps. They may also offer a possibility of making use of fast nonlinear solvers for solving the subproblems involved in the algorithms. Some preliminary numerical results are reported.
