Side‐scan sonar and Compressed High Intensity Radar Pulse mapping of Great Salt Lake, Utah, linked to reprocessing of acoustic data from bathymetric surveys, has enabled the distribution of microbial bioherms to be assessed. Bioherms occupy an estimated area >700 km2 in the south arm and >300 km2 in the north arm. Distributions vary from statistically dispersed to clustered, and in this latter case, are predominantly located on metre‐scale, fault‐controlled topographic highs, with sediment infilling intervening lows between adjacent offsets. Individual bioherms are circular to oblate and range from centimetres to over 2 m in diameter. In some areas, bioherm heights were measured at more than 1.5 m above adjacent substrate. Sublittoral bioherms are made of aragonite, calcite and minor dolomite precipitated due to physico‐chemical, biologically induced and influenced carbonate mineralization processes in association with microbial mats. Bioherm fabrics vary at the millimetre to centimetre‐scale and consist of leiolitic and clotted peloidal micrite‐grade carbonate, sinuous threads of spherulitic fibrous aragonite crystals, laminated micrite boundstone and internal carbonate mud sediment with peloids and ooids. The identification of factors that influence microbial bioherm occurrence and spatial distribution in Great Salt Lake is limited to a set of collinear physical, chemical and biological variables that are confined to a localised closed system, such as salinity, water depth, wave energy, stable substrate and sediment accumulation. Anthropogenic modifications to Great Salt Lake resulting in increased salinity have exceeded the salinity range in which bioherm‐mediating microbial communities can survive, effectively defining an upper limit of salinity for bioherm microbial community viability. The better understanding of the distribution of microbial bioherms has significant implications for managing and protecting the lake ecosystem and may provide insights into the physical and chemical controls that existed during the formation of fossil microbialites in deep time.

Non‐marine carbonates at Lakeside (Utah) are the depositional record of transitional shoreline palaeoenvironments around 1,285 m, as lake elevation fell from Lake Bonneville levels to low‐stand Great Salt Lake levels of 1,284–1,278 m. Lakeside carbonates provide a rare example of onshore groundwater spring deposits connected to lacustrine microbialite reefs. Clotted fabrics and mineralized bacteriomorphs suggest microbial influence both in groundwater spring and littoral carbonates. Thrombolitic clotted aragonite and dendritic clotted intermediate magnesium calcite may document two distinct microbial ecosystems each with a specific mineralogy. Radiocarbon dates from interior to outer layers of a 20 cm littoral microbialite suggest several thousand years of domal growth. Climate fluctuations may be recorded in littoral deposits by the alternation of ooids (increased salinity, arid conditions) with ostracods (fresher water, humid conditions). Successive higher frequency cycles of sedimentation, exposure, microkarst and early diagenesis were cemented by vadose and phreatic very high magnesium calcite and non‐stoichiometric dolomite. Several layers of littoral and beach deposits accumulated during longer lacustrine transgressive–regressive cycles. Clastic detritus and lack of known initial U and Th concentrations could explain the lack of correlation between widely scattered U‐Th ages and closely grouped 14C dates. Calibrated ages from radiocarbon dating may have been increased by long residence time of groundwater in bedrock, since 87Sr/86Sr signatures do indicate possible littoral‐zone mixing of lake water with groundwater from outcropping and subsurface Mississippian Great Blue Limestone. The perplexing Lakeside carbonate system is the result of interaction between microbial and chemical processes during sedimentation and early diagenesis.

Objectives The Clinical Practice Guideline of the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery (2014) stated that clinicians should not recommend dietary supplements for the treatment of tinnitus. The aim of this study is to characterize over-the-counter tinnitus remedies (OTCTR) on the U.S. market, describe the ingredients and prices, and characterize the methods of promoting these products. Methods OTCTR were identified via Web search and visits to retail establishments. Information was collected regarding OTCTR chemical composition, product labeling, advertisements and marketing, price, and customers reviews. Results A wide array of unproven OTCTR exist on today's market. All make unfounded claims of relief from ear ringing. Most of the products considered in this study consist of mixtures of inexpensive and common vitamins, minerals, and/or herbs sold at a premium compared to similar preparations not expressly advertised for tinnitus. Certain brands, most notably Arches Tinnitus Formula (Arches Natural Products Inc., Salt Lake City, UT) and Lipo-Flavonoid (Clarion Brands Inc., Solon, OH), target otolaryngologists by advertising in specialty journals and prominently featuring supposed endorsement by "Ear-Nose-and-Throat Doctors" in their marketing. Conclusion It is important for otolaryngologists who are caring for tinnitus sufferers to be aware that a robust and diverse market exists for unproven OTC tinnitus remedies. It is troubling that heavily advertised brands profess support by otolaryngologists. Responsible specialty organizations in the field should consider opposing such commercially motivated representations. Otolaryngology journals may wish to adopt a policy along the lines of The Journal of the American Medical Association publications to decline advertisements of dietary supplements that make unproven therapeutic claims. (IF 3.19; Q1); International audience; The semi‐arid Plio‐Quaternary aquifer of the Kairouan Plain is located in the central part of Tunisia. In this region, the main form of human activity is extensive agriculture. The few lithological logs in this area indicate that the aquifer is divided into two groundwater reservoirs separated by a confining clay layer. In the shallower groundwater reservoir, the electrical conductivity of the water is close to 1,200 mS/m, that is, 3 to 4 times higher than that of the deeper aquifer, which is currently used for irrigation. Recently, an increase in salinity has been observed, which is producing significant difficulties with irrigation. In order to determine the geometry of the confining clay layer and assess the potential connectivity between both reservoirs, time‐domain electromagnetic (TDEM) and vertical electrical soundings surveys were carried out. RATIONALE Strontium isotope ratios (87 Sr/86 Sr) in human fingernail keratin tissues have been underexplored for region of origin and travel history reconstruction studies. Here we investigated 87 Sr/86 Sr ratios in fingernail keratin to establish baseline measurements in a resident group and to examine how 87 Sr/86 Sr ratios changed with relocation. METHODS Fingernail clippings were collected from resident (n = 10) and non-resident/traveler groups (n = 4 and n = 4) that were part of a larger study in Salt Lake City (UT, USA) from 2015 to 2016. Strontium abundance and 87 Sr/86 Sr ratios were determined via multicollector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (MC-ICP-MS). 87 Sr/86 Sr and oxygen (δ18 O) isotope ratios from the traveler participants were compared to examine temporal patterns. RESULTS Strontium abundance and 87 Sr/86 Sr ratios in fingernails from the resident group established a baseline against which we could evaluate potential differences in non-resident/traveler groups. Resident 87 Sr/86 Sr ratios remained constant over the study period and were consistent with previously measured tap waters for the area. 87 Sr/86 Sr ratio changes in non-resident/traveler groups were rapid and reflected the current location of the individual within 4-5 weeks of arrival. Lastly, δ18 O and 87 Sr/86 Sr ratios of the same fingernail clippings did not exhibit similar temporal patterns, since fingernail δ18 O ratios required more time to attain values characteristic of the new environment. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that strontium is incorporated into fingernail tissues differently from hair and this could be advantageous to forensic investigations. We found that 87 Sr/86 Sr and δ18 O ratios of the same fingernail clippings revealed two different time points reflecting an individual's residence over short- (4-5 weeks, 87 Sr/86 Sr ratios) and long-term (3-5 months, δ18 O values) time scales. It is likely that the 87 Sr/86 Sr ratios of fingernail clippings reflect exogenous signals that are incorporated through bathing waters and that these signals change rapidly with movement to a new location. Our results may aid future forensic studies in the determination of region of origin in unidentified remains.

40 pages; International audience; The Bonneville Basin is a continental lacustrine system accommodating extensive microbial carbonate deposits corresponding to two distinct phases: the deep Lake Bonneville (30 000 to 11 500 14C bp) and the shallow Great Salt Lake (since 11 500 14C bp). A characterization of these microbial deposits and their associated sediments provides insights into their spatio‐temporal distribution patterns. The Bonneville phase preferentially displays vertical distribution of the microbial deposits resulting from high‐amplitude lake level variations. Due to the basin physiography, the microbial deposits were restricted to a narrow shoreline belt following Bonneville lake level variations. Carbonate production was more efficient during intervals of relative lake level stability as recorded by the formation of successive terraces. In contrast, the Great Salt Lake microbial deposits showed a great lateral distribution, linked to the modern flat bottom configuration. A low vertical distribution of the microbial deposits was the result of the shallow water depth combined with a low amplitude of lake level fluctuations. These younger microbial deposits display a higher diversity of fabrics and sizes. They are distributed along an extensive ‘shore to lake’ transect on a flat platform in relation to local and progressive accommodation space changes. Microbial deposits are temporally discontinuous throughout the lake history showing longer hiatuses during the Bonneville phase. The main parameters controlling the rate of carbonate production are related to the interaction between physical (kinetics of the mineral precipitation, lake water temperature and runoff), chemical (Ca2+, Mg2+ and HCO3− concentrations, Mg/Ca ratio, dilution and depletion) and/or biological (trophic) factors. The contrast in evolution of Lake Bonneville and Great Salt Lake microbial deposits during their lacustrine history leads to discussions on major chemical and climatic changes during this interval as well as the role of physiography. Furthermore, it provides novel insights into the composition, structure and formation of microbialite‐rich carbonate deposits under freshwater and hypersaline conditions.

Global travel has increased, and having a diagnostic tool to distinguish residents from visitors would be valuable. This study examined stable isotope biomarkers of fingernail tissues of resident (n = 26) and nonresident (n = 22) participants in Salt Lake City (SLC), UT, from 2015 to 2016. The purpose of this research was to determine whether fingernail isotopes could be used for reconstructing geolocation movements and to examine the convergence in nonresident fingernail isotopes to that of the resident signal following their arrival to SLC. Resident isotope values defined a baseline to make comparisons to. Initial nonresident hydrogen and oxygen isotope values were correlated with precipitation isotopes of their prior location. Fingernail isotope turnover rates were rapid and nonresident isotopes were indistinguishable from residents after ~71-90 days. The results of our study highlight the utility of stable isotope measurements of fingernail clippings to examine travel history reconstruction that could aid in identification of human remains.

This study focuses on the examination of stable isotope biomarkers in human fingernails of travelers who ventured away from Salt Lake City, UT and subsequently returned. Here, we describe three case studies examining: individual travelers (n = 4), paired travelers (n = 2), and a traveler (n = 1) who repeatedly left and returned. Our case studies examined the influences of dietary and drinking water inputs on fingernail stable isotope profiles for reconstructing travel histories. Stable isotope data were compared with theoretical and predictive models that laid the groundwork for anthropological and forensic geospatial reconstruction of travel histories. Drinking water inputs strongly influenced stable isotope profiles and the patterns observed were consistent with reported travel histories. Finally, observed fingernail stable isotope ratio data were consistent with modeled rates of stable isotope turnover and transition to expected values for the new environment. The results of our study further support the use of fingernail tissues for travel history reconstruction.

Certification labels have become a ubiquitous feature on food products across grocery store shelves. Although it is widely acknowledged that certified products often garner higher prices than their noncertified competition, less is known regarding what those price differences are based on, and what the personal, political, or ethical implications are for consumers. This research note argues for greater attention to the implications of certified food prices—which we conceptualize as the “consumer costs” of food certification. The paper discusses the theoretical linkages between food certifications and prices, and outlines the resulting consumer costs of which we are concerned. Through a pilot study in Salt Lake City, Utah, we investigate prices found on certified grocery store rice, and consider the causes and implications of the consumer costs of food certification.

Lithium can be found in its bound form in silicatic rocks and dissolved in salt lake brines. Both types of lithium resources, whose amounts exceed the expected demand for lithium by several times, are used for lithium recovery. The known lithium resources and their geochemical characteristics are reviewed together with the presently applied recovery processes which are still very similar to the historically early techniques. New processes for direct carbonization of zinnwaldite, hydrochloric and oxalic acid leaching as well as a new method for the recovery of lithium from magnesium-rich brines are presented.

Objectives/Hypothesis 1) Determine feasibility of smartphone-based mobile technology to measure noise exposure; and 2) measure noise exposure in exercise spin classes. Study Design Observational Study. Methods The SoundMeter Pro app (Faber Acoustical, Salt Lake City, UT) was installed and calibrated on iPhone and iPod devices in an audiology chamber using an external sound level meter to within 2 dBA of accuracy. Recording devices were placed in the bike cupholders of participants attending spin classes in Boston, Massachusetts (n = 17) and used to measure sound level (A-weighted) and noise dosimetry during exercise according to National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) guidelines. Results The average length of exposure was 48.9 ± 1.2 (standard error of the mean) minutes per class. Maximum sound recorded among 17 random classes was 116.7 dBA, which was below the NIOSH instantaneous exposure guideline of 140 dBA. An average of 31.6 ± 3.8 minutes were spent at >100 dBA. This exceeds NIOSH recommendations of 15 minutes of exposure or less at 100 dBA per day. Average noise exposure for one 45-minute class was 8.95 ± 1.2 times the recommended noise exposure dose for an 8-hour workday. Conclusions Preliminary data shows that randomly sampled cycling classes may have high noise levels with a potential for noise-induced hearing loss. Mobile dosimetry technology may enable users to self-monitor risk to their hearing and actively engage in noise protection measures. Level of Evidence NA Laryngoscope, 127:1873–1877, 2017

Residents near the Great Salt Lake in northern Utah, USA have been exposed to ozone levels during recent summers exceeding the current United States National Ambient Air Quality Standard. Accurately forecasting those exceedances has been difficult as a result of the complex meteorological and photochemical processes fostering them. To help improve such forecasts, a low-cost field study was conducted during summer 2015 to provide comprehensive observations of boundary-layer ozone concentrations in the context of the prevailing meteorological conditions. A network of surface ozone sensors was supplemented by sensors mounted on vehicles, a public transit light-rail car, news helicopter, tethered sonde, and unmanned aerial vehicle. The temporal and spatial evolution of boundary-layer ozone concentrations were compared with the prevailing regional and local meteorological conditions on the basis of gridded operational analyses, surface weather stations, and additional sensors deployed for the field study. High ozone concentrations during June 2015 resulted primarily from local processes while smoke transported from distant wildfires contributed to elevated ozone concentrations during August. The Great Salt Lake influenced ozone concentrations along the Wasatch Front through several mechanisms, most importantly its impact on local wind circulations. The highest ozone concentrations were often found in a narrow zone between the Great Salt Lake and the urban regions to its south and east. Observations from multiple fixed site and mobile platforms during 18–19 August illustrate the complex variations in ozone concentrations as a function of elevation at the surface as well as vertically through the deep boundary layer.

A railroad causeway across Great Salt Lake, Utah (GSL), has restricted water flow since its construction in 1959, resulting in a more saline North Arm (NA; 24%-31% salinity) and a less saline South Arm (SA; 11%-14% salinity). Here, we characterized microbial carbonates collected from the SA and the NA to evaluate the effect of increased salinity on community composition and abundance and to determine whether the communities present in the NA are still actively precipitating carbonate or if they are remnant features from prior to causeway construction. SSU rRNA gene abundances associated with the NA microbialite were three orders of magnitude lower than those associated with the SA microbialite, indicating that the latter community is more productive. SSU rRNA gene sequencing and functional gene microarray analyses indicated that SA and NA microbialite communities are distinct. In particular, abundant sequences affiliated with photoautotrophic taxa including cyanobacteria and diatoms that may drive carbonate precipitation and thus still actively form microbialites were identified in the SA microbialite; sequences affiliated with photoautotrophic taxa were in low abundance in the NA microbialite. SA and NA microbialites comprise smooth prismatic aragonite crystals. However, the SA microbialite also contained micritic aragonite, which can be formed as a result of biological activity. Collectively, these observations suggest that NA microbialites are likely to be remnant features from prior to causeway construction and indicate a strong decrease in the ability of NA microbialite communities to actively precipitate carbonate minerals. Moreover, the results suggest a role for cyanobacteria and diatoms in carbonate precipitation and microbialite formation in the SA of GSL.

This article summarizes findings from surveys and interviews with five teachers at an elementary school in the Salt Lake City School District that is participating in the federally funded School Improvement Grant program to raise the achievement of all students. The qualitative data analysis focuses on two major themes: (1) the current attitudes, perceptions, and practices in place for meeting the needs of the large population of English language learners (ELLs) currently enrolled at the school and (2) the current collaborative efforts and support for teachers regarding meeting the needs of ELLs. These data are then compared to recent literature to determine the needs of this specific school. The authors offer recommendations for creating a schoolwide focus for meeting the needs of ELLs in the context of professional development and professional learning community initiatives while utilizing both the literature and suggestions from the participants. They conclude by addressing the implications of these recommendations.

Background This article chronicles the design and development of a competency-based education (CBE) training course for faculty transitioning to a true CBE model at Salt Lake Community College's School of Applied Technology. The faculty CBE training course outlines the standards, expectations, and best practices with real-world examples and hands-on activities. Methods A team-based approach was used with regard to the design and development of the training course. Authors of this article were members of that design and development team. Results Although development was ultimately successful, initial trial and error led to many challenges and lessons learned which are highlighted in the article as recommendations to educators transitioning to a CBE model. The training course is just beginning to be used, so results regarding its implementation are not yet available.

Selective harvesting can cause evolutionary responses in populations via shifts in phenotypic characteristics, especially those affecting life history. Brine shrimp (Artemia franciscana) cysts in Great Salt Lake (GSL), Utah, USA are commercially harvested with techniques that select against floating cysts. This selective pressure could cause evolutionary changes over time. Our objectives are to (1) determine if there is a genetic basis to cyst buoyancy, (2) determine if cyst buoyancy and nauplii mortality have changed over time, and (3) to examine GSL environmental conditions over time to distinguish whether selective harvesting pressure or a trend in environmental conditions caused changes in cyst buoyancy and nauplii mortality. Mating crosses between floating and sinking parental phenotypes with two food concentrations (low and high) indicated there is a genetic basis to cyst buoyancy. Using cysts harvested from 1991-2011, we found cyst buoyancy decreased and nauplii mortality increased over time. Data on water temperature, salinity, and chlorophyll a concentration in GSL from 1994 to 2011 indicated that although water temperature has increased over time and chlorophyll a concentration has decreased over time, the selective harvesting pressure against floating cysts is a better predictor of changes in cyst buoyancy and nauplii mortality over time than trends in environmental conditions. Harvesting of GSL A. franciscana cysts is causing evolutionary changes, which has implications for the sustainable management and harvesting of these cysts. Monitoring phenotypic characteristics and life-history traits of the population should be implemented and appropriate responses taken to reduce the impacts of the selective harvesting.

Objective A structured educational effort to train primary care providers (PCPs) to perform joint injections has been projected to be cost effective. The US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is developing a national continuing professional development program to train PCPs in the evaluation and management of patients with common musculoskeletal conditions. The objective of this pilot project was to confirm initial projections of cost effectiveness and to inform further efforts to develop this program on a national scale. Methods The Salt Lake City VA served as the national hub for this pilot project. The initial phase included 19 providers, who participated in a weeklong mixed-methods course. Evaluation was conducted by the VA Employee Education System. Assessments included anonymous surveys, structured telephone interviews, and a review of de-identified procedure codes. Results The survey response rate was 100%, with uniformly positive results. All participants recommended the expansion of this program. The mean number of joint injections performed each month increased from 0.3 (precourse) to 3.5 (postcourse), congruent with prior analyses projecting program cost effectiveness. Conclusion The musculoskeletal mini-residency is a well-received program, with early evidence of cost effectiveness and impact aligned with course objectives. This pilot program is a foundation for efforts in the national dissemination of this initiative.

This chapter outlines the birth and growth of a veterans' program in Salt Lake City, Utah, and discusses next steps in spurring additional innovations and advancements to improve service for student veterans in community colleges.

In order to address worsening air quality, communities have begun to implement both mandatory and "soft" policies in recent years. Air quality alert systems are an example of voluntary or soft transportation policies; when the air quality index is above a certain threshold, people are encouraged not to drive on these days. Another example of these types of policies is public education campaigns focusing on the reduction of automobile-related travel. The effectiveness of one such policy is evaluated in this article, the Clean the Air Challenge (CAC), as to how well it reduces ground-level ozone during the Wasatch Front's summer ozone season. The authors estimate a range of nonequivalent control group models using daily ozone data and color-coded daily air quality designations from 2006 through 2012. A statistically significant, but small, reduction in ground-level ozone is generated by the CAC in only one of the models. The full range of costs and benefits to the public associated with such soft transport policies should be assessed in future research.

Highstands in the Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 3 based on 14C dating in the Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau (QTP) are widely documented. Recent records from shoreline sediments dated using U-series and/or optically stimulated luminescence (OSL), however, reveal that the highstands originally dated in MIS 3 should now be considered to fall in MIS 5. This paper provides new evidence from the interior of the QTP, based on the grain-size from a continuous lake core in the Zabuye Salt Lake, to verify the MIS 5 highstand in the QTP. Grain-size analysis of the core sediments also distinguishes two other highstands in MIS 3 and MIS 2, respectively. The MIS 5 highstand is considered as the maximum lake level since the Last Interglacial, as cored sediments contain very low values of Median Diameter (Md) during MIS 5. Compared with the discontinuous records from lake shorelines sediments, the grain-size records from the continuous lake centre core sediments provide a more complete dataset to infer lake level variations, and make it possible to make wider palaeoclimatic and palaeoenvironmental interpretation. In the interior of the QTP, highstands might have continued into cold climate periods due to the reduced evaporation rates in the latter. The influence of the moisture-bearing southerly-shifted Westerly wind pathway may also have contributed to the highstands in the glacial period. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Interactions between wildlife and commercial harvest industries need to be understood to manage resources for all users. About 1.5 million eared grebes (Podiceps nigricollis), half the North American population, stage on Utah's Great Salt Lake (GSL) each fall. A $56 million commercial harvest industry also operates during fall when the harvest of brine shrimp (Artemia franciscana) cysts occurs. Eared grebes and commercial harvest both utilize brine shrimp cysts creating a potentially adverse relationship. We assessed the diet of eared grebes to determine the extent to which they are dependent on brine shrimp and their cysts. We collected individual birds to measure diets and examine changes in body condition of staging eared grebes. Cysts were consumed by 40% of collected eared grebes and made up >75% of aggregate biomass of stomach samples. Despite the high occurrence of cysts in stomach samples, cysts were not the primary food item of eared grebes. Cysts were held in the stomach for longer periods by feather mass, so esophagus samples were a better indicator of diet. Adult brine shrimp were the primary food collected from the esophagus from October until December. After cold water temperatures caused a die-off of adult brine shrimp, cysts became more prevalent in the diet of eared grebes. Concomitantly, eared grebe body weights decreased as their diet shifted to brine shrimp cysts. Current monitoring and management of commercial harvest are sufficient to maintain yearly populations of adult brine shrimp to sustain eared grebes populations. © 2013 The Wildlife Society.
