Men's emotions in intimate partner relationships have received little research attention. The current interpretive descriptive study included 30 Canadian-based men to address the research question: What are the connections between masculinities and men's emotions in and after intimate partner relationships? Three inductively derived themes included emergent distressing emotions wherein participants' predominance for holding in abeyance their concerns about the relationship manifested varying levels of emotional stoicism. Within this context most men denied or downplayed and did not express their emotions. When the relationship broke, men were overwhelmed by mixed and weighty break-up emotions comprising diverse and often-times discordant emotions, including sadness, shame, anger, regret and guilt, calling into question men's rationality for deciphering and expressing what was concurrently but inexplicably felt. Shame and anger were prominent emotions demanding the participant's attention to all that happened in and at the end of the relationship. In the third theme, understanding and transitioning after-burn emotions, participant's grief levered their efforts, including soliciting professional help for deconstructing, reframing and expressing their emotions in the aftermath of the partnership ending. The findings contextualise and in some instances counter claims about the utility of men's emotional stoicism by mapping participants' feelings in and after intimate partner relationships.

Human exposures to organophosphate flame retardants result from their use as additives in numerous consumer products. These agents are replacements for brominated flame retardants but have not yet faced similar scrutiny for developmental neurotoxicity. We examined a representative organophosphate flame retardant, triphenyl phosphate (TPP) and its potential effects on behavioral development and dopaminergic function.Female Sprague-Dawley rats were given low doses of TPP (16 or 32 mg kgOffspring with TPP exposures showed increased latency to begin eating in the novelty-suppressed feeding test, impaired object recognition memory, impaired choice accuracy in the visual signal detection test, and sex-selective effects on locomotor activity in adolescence (males) but not adulthood. Male, but not female, offspring showed marked increases in dopamine utilization in the striatum, evidenced by an increase in the ratio of the primary dopamine metabolite (3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid) relative to dopamine levels.These results indicate that TPP has adverse effects that are similar in some respects to those of organophosphate pesticides, which were restricted because of their developmental neurotoxicity.

The purpose of this review was to synthesise the literature on the topic of masculinity and testicular cancer (TC) and investigate the relative impact of TC on men's view of their masculinity.Searches were conducted across four databases (MEDline, PsycInfo, CINAHL Plus and Scopus) for articles published before April 2022 that included (1) TC and (2) masculinity. Two researchers independently rated studies for inclusion with a third resolving conflicts. Of the 6464 articles screened, 24 articles (10 quantitative and 14 qualitative) were included in the review. Articles were rated for quality and a narrative synthesis was performed.Overall, results indicated some men experience a shift in the way they relate to their sense of masculinity following diagnosis and treatment for TC. Being single and without children was related to the experience of negative masculinity-related outcomes, possibly due to a compounding lack of relational support and being unable to conform to protector, provider traditions. Men who described testicle loss as symbolic of their diminished masculinity were also negatively impacted. However, recent, high-quality literature on the topic using standardised masculinity measures was limited.Some men experience a reduced sense of masculinity after TC, however the impact of TC on masculinity remains person dependent. Further research using validated masculinity measures is required to uncover psycho-social variables that may account for whether and how meaning is made between TC and its treatment and any subsequent impact on perceived masculinity. This review aimed to examine the validity of self-report screening questionnaires for identifying eating disorder (ED) risk in adults and adolescents with overweight/obesity.Five databases were searched from inception to September 2020 for studies assessing validation of self-report ED screening questionnaires against diagnostic interviews in adolescents and adults with overweight/obesity. The review was registered with PROSPERO (https://www.crd.york.ac.uk/PROSPERO/display_record.php?RecordID=220013).Twenty-seven papers examining 15 questionnaires were included. Most studies validated questionnaires for adults (22 of 27 studies), and most questionnaires (12 of 15) screened for binge eating or binge-eating disorder (BED). The Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire (sensitivity = .16-.88, specificity = .62-1.0) and Questionnaire on Eating and Weight Patterns (sensitivity = .07-1.0, specificity = .0-1.0) were most frequently validated (six studies each). Five studies of three questionnaires were in adolescents, with the Adolescent Binge-Eating Disorder Questionnaire having highest sensitivity (1.0) but lower specificity (.27). Questionnaires designed to screen for BED generally had higher diagnostic accuracy than those screening for EDs in general.Questionnaires have been well validated to identify BED in adults with overweight/obesity. Validated screening tools to identify other EDs in adults and any ED in adolescents with overweight/obesity are lacking. Thus, clinical assessment should inform the identification of patients with co-morbid EDs and overweight/obesity.Individuals with overweight/obesity are at increased risk of EDs. This review highlights literature gaps regarding screening for ED risk in this vulnerable group. This work presents possibilities for improving care of individuals with overweight/obesity by reinventing ED screening tools to be better suited to diverse populations.Esta revisión tuvo como objetivo examinar la validez de los cuestionarios de detección de autorreporte para identificar el riesgo de trastorno de la conducta alimentaria (TCA) en adultos y adolescentes con sobrepeso/obesidad. MÉTODO: Se realizaron búsquedas en cinco bases de datos desde su inicio hasta septiembre de 2020 para obtener estudios que evaluaran la validación de los cuestionarios de autorreporte de detección de TCA frente a entrevistas diagnósticas en adolescentes y adultos con sobrepeso/obesidad. La revisión se registró en PROSPERO (https://www.crd.york.ac.uk/PROSPERO/display_record.php?RecordID=220013).Se incluyeron veintisiete artículos que examinaron 15 cuestionarios. La mayoría de los estudios validaron cuestionarios para adultos (22 de 27 estudios) y la mayoría de los cuestionarios (12 de 15) detectaban atracones o trastorno por atracón (BED, en sus siglas en inglés). El Cuestionario de Examen de Trastornos alimentarios (Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire) (sensibilidad = 0.16-0.88, especificidad = 0.62-1.0) y el Cuestionario sobre patrones de alimentación y peso (Questionnaire on Eating and Weight Patterns) (sensibilidad = 0.07-1.0, especificidad = 0.0-1.0) se validaron con mayor frecuencia (seis estudios cada uno). Cinco estudios de tres cuestionarios fueron en adolescentes, y el Cuestionario de Trastorno por Atracón en Adolescentes (Adolescent Binge-eating Disorder Questionnaire) tuvo la mayor sensibilidad (1,0) pero una menor especificidad (0,27). DISCUSIÓN: Los cuestionarios han sido bien validados para identificar BED en adultos con sobrepeso/obesidad. Faltan herramientas de detección validadas para identificar otros TCA en adultos y cualquier tipo de trastorno de la conducta alimentaria en adolescentes con sobrepeso / obesidad. Por lo tanto, la evaluación clínica debe informar la identificación de pacientes con comorbilidad de TCA y sobrepeso/obesidad.

Different tauopathies are characterized by the isoform‐specific composition of the aggregates found in the brain and by structurally distinct tau strains. Although tau oligomers have been implicated as important neurotoxic species, little is known about how the primary structures of the six human tau isoforms affect tau oligomerization because the oligomers are metastable and difficult to analyze. To address this knowledge gap, here, we analyzed the initial oligomers formed by the six tau isoforms in the absence of posttranslational modifications or other manipulations using dot blots probed by an oligomer‐specific antibody, native‐PAGE/western blots, photo‐induced cross‐linking of unmodified proteins, mass‐spectrometry, and ion‐mobility spectroscopy. We found that under these conditions, three‐repeat (3R) isoforms are more prone than four‐repeat (4R) isoforms to form oligomers. We also tested whether known inhibitors of tau aggregation affect its oligomerization using three small molecules representing different classes of tau aggregation inhibitors, Methylene Blue (MB), the molecular tweezer CLR01, and the all‐D peptide TLKIVW, for their ability to inhibit or modulate the oligomerization of the six tau isoforms. Unlike their reported inhibitory effect on tau fibrillation, the inhibitors had little or no effect on the initial oligomerization. Our study provides novel insight into the primary–quaternary structure relationship of human tau and suggests that 3R‐tau oligomers may be an important target for future development of compounds targeting pathological tau assemblies.
