Abstract An increased risk of target organ damage (TOD) has been reported in patients with primary aldosteronism (PA). However, there is relatively little related research on the correlation between the degree of TOD and those with and without PA in newly diagnosed hypertensive patients. The aim of this study was to assess the association between PA and TOD among patients with newly diagnosed hypertension. Newly diagnosed hypertensive patients were consecutively recruited from January 2015 to June 2020 at the University of Hong Kong‐Shenzhen Hospital. Patients were stratified into those with and without PA. Data for left ventricular mass index (LVMI), carotid intima‐media thickness (CIMT) and plaque, and microalbuminuria were systematically collected. A total of 1044 patients with newly diagnosed hypertension were recruited, 57 (5.5%) of whom were diagnosed with PA. Patients with PA had lower blood pressure, serum lipids, body mass index, and plasma renin activity and a higher incidence of hypokalemia than those without PA. In contrast, the prevalence of left ventricular hypertrophy, increased CIMT, and microalbuminuria was higher in patients with PA than in those without PA. Multivariable regression analysis demonstrated that PA was independently associated with increased LVMI, CIMT and microalbuminuria. Among patients with newly diagnosed hypertension, those with PA had more severe TOD, including a higher LVMI, CIMT and microalbuminuria, than those without PA. These findings emphasize the need for screening TOD in newly diagnosed hypertension due to underlying PA.

Objective Dual‐plate fixation was thought to be the gold standard for treating complicated bicondylar tibial plateau fractures, yet it was found to be hard to accommodate the posterior column in three‐column fractures. Currently, column‐specific fixation is becoming more and more recognized, but no comprehensive investigation has been performed to back it up. Therefore, the objective of this study was to validate the importance of posterior column fixation in the three‐column tibial fractures by a finite element (FE) analysis and clinical study. Methods In FE analysis, three models were developed: the longitudinal triple‐plate group (LTPG), the oblique triple‐plate group (OTPG), and the dual‐plate group (DPG). Three loading scenarios were simulated. The distribution of the displacement and the equivalent von Mises stress (VMS) in each structure was calculated. The comparative measurements including the maximum posterior column collapse (MPCC), the maximum total displacement of the model (MTD), the maximum VMS of cortical posterior column (MPC‐VMS), and the maximum VMS located on each group of plates and screws (MPS‐VMS). The clinical study evaluated the indicators between the groups with or without the posterior plate, including operation time, blood loss volume, full‐weight bearing period, Hospital for Special Surgery Knee Scoring system (HSS), Rasmussen score, and common postoperative complications. Results In the FE analysis, the MPCC, the MPC‐VMS, and the MTD were detected in much lower amounts in LTPG and OTPG than in DPG. In comparison with DPG, the LTPG and OTPG had larger MPS‐VMS. Abstract Selenium (Se), the world's oldest optoelectronic material, has been widely applied in various optoelectronic devices such as commercial X‐ray flat‐panel detectors and photovoltaics. However, despite the rare and widely‐dispersed nature of Se element, a sustainable recycling of Se and other valuable materials from spent Se‐based devices has not been developed so far. Here a sustainable strategy is reported that makes use of the significantly higher vapor pressure of volatile Se compared to other functional layers to recycle all of them from end‐of‐life Se‐based devices through a closed‐space evaporation process, utilizing Se photovoltaic devices as a case study. This strategy results in high recycling yields of ≈ 98% for Se and 100% for other functional materials including valuable gold electrodes and glass/FTO/TiO2 substrates. The refabricated photovoltaic devices based on these recycled materials achieve an efficiency of 12.33% under 1000‐lux indoor illumination, comparable to devices fabricated using commercially sourced materials and surpassing the current indoor photovoltaic industry standard of amorphous silicon cells.

Abstract The human gut hosts numerous ecological niches for microbe–microbe and host–microbe interactions. Gut lactate homeostasis in humans is crucial and relies on various bacteria. Veillonella spp., gut lactate‐utilizing bacteria, and lactate‐producing bacteria were frequently co‐isolated. A recent clinical trial has revealed that lactate‐producing bacteria in humans cross‐feed lactate to Veillonella spp.; however, their interspecies interaction mechanisms remain unclear. Veillonella dispar, an obligate anaerobe commonly found in the human gut and oral cavity, ferments lactate into acetate and propionate. In our study, we investigated the interaction between V. dispar ATCC 17748T and three representative phylogenetically distant strains of lactic acid bacteria, Lactobacillus acidophilus ATCC 4356T, Lacticaseibacillus paracasei subsp. paracasei ATCC 27216T, and Lactiplantibacillus plantarum ATCC 10241. Bacterial growth, viability, metabolism and gene level adaptations during bacterial interaction were examined. V. dispar exhibited the highest degree of mutualism with L. acidophilus. During co‐culture of V. dispar with L. acidophilus, both bacteria exhibited enhanced growth and increased viability. V. dispar demonstrated an upregulation of amino acid biosynthesis pathways and the aspartate catabolic pathway. L. acidophilus also showed a considerable number of upregulated genes related to growth and lactate fermentation. Our results support that V. dispar is able to enhance the fermentative capability of L. acidophilus by presumably consuming the produced lactate, and that L. acidophilus cross‐feed not only lactate, but also glutamate, to V. dispar during co‐culture. The cross‐fed glutamate enters the central carbon metabolism in V. dispar. These findings highlight an intricate metabolic relationship characterized by cross‐feeding of lactate and glutamate in parallel with considerable gene regulation within both L. acidophilus (lactate‐producing) and V. dispar (lactate‐utilizing). The mechanisms of mutualistic interactions between a traditional probiotic bacterium and a potential next‐generation probiotic bacterium were elucidated in the production of short‐chain fatty acids.

Abstract The chemical fertilizer industry has made great contributions to China's food security. Existing studies mainly focus on evaluating fertilizer use efficiency at the farm level whereas little is known about the technical efficiency of Chinese firms producing fertilizer. Based on the Chinese Industrial Enterprise Database (CIED) and the Generalized True Random Effects model (GTRE), this paper estimates and decomposes the technical efficiency of Chinese fertilizer‐producing firms. Results show technical efficiency increased from 0.883 in 1998 to 0.930 in 2007, with an average of 0.898. The growth rate of persistent efficiency is lower than that of transient efficiency, implying structural problems exist in the Chinese fertilizer industry. Moreover, ownership type and firms' entry and exit are exogenous determinants of technical inefficiency. State‐owned firms perform much worse on technical efficiency. The entry of efficient firms and exit of inefficient firms, especially the exit of inefficient state‐owned firms, have improved the technical efficiency significantly.

Abstract Objective This study aims to evaluate the association between autoimmune thyroiditis and Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss (SSNHL). Methods Hundred and five patients with SSNHL were enrolled. Audiometric tests, serum thyroid autoantibodies (TPOAb, TgAb) were studied. Based on the thyroid autoantibody results, patients were divided into two groups: thyroid autoantibody‐positive and negative. The relationship between thyroid autoimmunity and audiological characteristics was analyzed. Results Twenty‐six patients (24.8%) of the SSNHL had thyroid autoantibody elevated. Abstract Cancer cells are addicted to glutamine. However, cancer cells often suffer from glutamine starvation, which largely results from the fast growth of cancer cells and the insufficient vascularization in the interior of cancer tissues. Herein, based on clinical samples, patient‐derived cells (PDCs), and cell lines, it is found that liver cancer cells display stem‐like characteristics upon glutamine shortage due to maintaining the stemness of tumor initiating cells (TICs) and even promoting transformation of non‐TICs into stem‐like cells by glutamine starvation. Increased expression of glutamine synthetase (GS) is essential for maintaining and promoting stem‐like characteristics of liver cancer cells during glutamine starvation. Mechanistically, glutamine starvation activates Rictor/mTORC2 to induce HDAC3‐mediated deacetylation and stabilization of GS. Rictor is significantly correlated with the expression of GS and stem marker OCT4 at tumor site, and closely correlates with poor prognosis of hepatocellular carcinomas. Inhibiting components of mTORC2‐HDAC3‐GS axis decrease TICs and promote xenografts regression upon glutamine‐starvation therapy. Collectively, the data provides novel insights into the role of Rictor/mTORC2‐HDAC3 in reprogramming glutamine metabolism to sustain stemness of cancer cells. Targeting Rictor/HDAC3 may enhance the efficacy of glutamine‐starvation therapy and limit the rapid growth and malignant progression of tumors.

Introduction: Tripterygium glycosides (TGs) have been widely used in China to treat diabetic nephropathy (DN); however, proof of their use is scarce. The present study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of adding TGs to angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors or angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs). Methods: By searching Embase, MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, SINOMED, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, VIP Information/Chinese Scientific Journals, and WANFANG databases, we identified previous studies that met the specific selection criteria and included them in the meta-analysis. Analyses were performed using Review Manager (version 5.3). Results: Nine randomized controlled trials were included in the final meta-analysis. Patients were compared before and after treatment with ACE inhibitors or ARBs plus TGs, or ACE inhibitors or ARBs alone. The results revealed that treatment with ACE inhibitors or ARBs plus TGs resulted in significantly greater reductions in 24-h urinary total protein (UTP) levels (trial duration 6 months, MD: −2.09; 95% CI: −2.89, −1.29) compared with treatment using ACE inhibitors or ARBs alone. Additionally, ACE inhibitors or ARBs plus TGs showed better results after long-term administration. Treatment with ACE inhibitors or ARBs plus TGs resulted in significantly greater reductions in serum creatinine (SCr) compared with ACE inhibitors or ARBs alone (MD: −9.87; 95% CI: −13.76, −5.97). Conclusion: In patients with DN, adding TGs to ACE inhibitors or ARBs significantly lowered both the 24-h UTP and SCr levels. Therefore, ACE inhibitors or ARBs plus TGs might improve the treatment of DN in patients. One of the most prevalent malignant primary brain tumors is primary glioma. Although glutathione peroxidase 8 (GPX8) is intimately associated with carcinogenesis, its function in primary gliomas has not yet been thoroughly understood. Here, we leveraged Chinese Glioma Genome Atlas (CGGA), The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA), and Genotype-Tissue Expression (GTEx) database to investigate the association between GPX8 and overall survival (OS) of patients with primary gliomas, and our results showed that GPX8 expression was negatively correlated with OS. Moreover, the expression of GPX8 is significantly lower in normal tissue when compared to glioma tissue. According to results of univariate and multivariate analysis from CGGA using R studio, GPX8 is a valuable primary glioma prognostic indicator. Interestingly, high GPX8 expression is correlated positively with the hedgehog and kras signaling pathways and negatively with G2 checkpoint, apoptosis, reactive oxygen species (ROS) pathway, and interferon gamma pathway, which could be beneficial for the proliferation of glioma cells. Furthermore, GPX8 knockdown caused G1 cell cycle arrest, increased cell death, and reduced colony formation in U87MG and U118MG cells. In conclusion, GPX8 is a promising therapeutic target and meaningful prognostic biomarker of primary glioma.

Abstract Mythimna separata (Walker) moths captured in light traps were monitored in Luohe, central‐northern China, from 1980 to 2016. Annual average temperature recorded an increase of 0.298°C/10 years in this region in the period. Our results indicate that a rising April and May average temperature and earlier occurrences of days recording the highest day temperature (30°C) caused an advanced peak and increasing proportion of high ovarian development levels of first‐generation females in earlier summers. Results using Johnson's formulation of “oogenesis‐flight syndrome” indicate that increasing sexual maturity proportion has resulted in more emigrant individuals in the local first‐generation moth becoming residents, and then increased individuals rapidly in the local second‐generation moth since 2006. Consequences of this action have a boom in corn damage since 2007 in this region. Advanced peak dates of the first and second‐generation moth revealed the same response to increasing average monthly temperatures in the monitoring period. Increasing temperatures, the average May temperature exceeds or equal to 22°C, during the early 2000's may represent a physiological threshold for M. separata development. Our results suggest that climate warming may impact M. separata migratory status and cause a problem of crop production in this region.

Abstract The expansion of cash tree crops, such as natural rubber, in the tropical region of South Asia has resulted in an agricultural transformation from subsistence production to market‐oriented production, implicating the local ecological environment, economy, and household welfare. Based on representative household survey data collected from 611 smallholder rubber farmers in the upper Mekong region, Southwest China, this study examines the impacts of rubber farming on the household dietary diversity of smallholders and explores its potential impact channels through farm production diversity and household income. The results show that rubber expansion has significantly improved household income but negatively affected farm production diversity. While rubber cultivation always has significant and positive effects on dietary diversity, it also indirectly impacts on dietary diversity by the two channels, namely farm production diversity and household income. A set of heterogeneous analyses reveals that rubber cultivation contributes more to household dietary diversity for smallholders having relatively low household wealth or living in a village without a market. While the findings confirm the contribution of rubber cultivation to improving household incomes, food security, and nutrition, the potential risks under the background of falling rubber prices cannot be ignored. The findings of this study not only have important policy implications for improving the food security and nutrition of smallholder rubber farmers but also provide a better understanding of the welfare effects of cash tree crop expansion in tropical regions.

ABSTRACT Background Mosaicism poses challenges for genetic counseling and preimplantation genetic testing for monogenic disorders (PGT‐M). NGS‐based PGT‐M has been extensively used to prevent the transmission of monogenic defects, but it has not been evaluated in the application of PGT‐M resulting from mosaicism. Methods Four women suspected of mosaicism were confirmed by ultra‐deep sequencing. Blastocyst trophectoderm cells and polar bodies were collected for whole genome amplification, followed by pathogenic variants detection and haplotype analysis based on NGS. The embryos free of the monogenic disorders were transplantable. Results Ultra‐deep sequencing confirmed that the four women harbored somatic mosaic variants, with the proportion of variant cells at 1.12%, 9.0%, 27.60%, and 91.03%, respectively. A total of 25 blastocysts were biopsied and detected during four PGT cycles and 5 polar bodies were involved in one cycle additionally. For each couple, a wild‐type embryo was successfully transplanted and confirmed by prenatal diagnosis, resulting in the birth of four healthy infants. Conclusions Mosaic variants could be effectively evaluated via ultra‐deep sequencing, and could be prevented the transmission by PGT. Our work suggested that an NGS‐based PGT approach, involving pathogenic variants detection combined with haplotype analysis, is crucial for accurate PGT‐M with mosaicism.

Cooperative spreading dynamics on complex networks is a hot topic in the field of network science. In this paper, we propose a strategy to immunize some nodes based on their degrees. The immunized nodes disable the synergistic effect of cooperative spreading dynamics. We also develop a generalized percolation theory to study the final state of the spreading dynamics. By using the Monte Carlo method, numerical simulations reveal that immunizing nodes with a large degree cannot always be beneficial for containing cooperative spreading. For small values of transmission probability, immunizing hubs can suppress the spreading, while the opposite situation happens for large values of transmission probability. Furthermore, numerical simulations show that immunizing hubs increase the cost of the system. Finally, all numerical simulations can be well predicted by the generalized percolation theory.

In the real world, individual resources are crucial for patients when epidemics outbreak. Thus, the coupled dynamics of resource diffusion and epidemic spreading have been widely investigated when the recovery of diseases significantly depends on the resources from neighbors in static social networks. However, the social relationships of individuals are time-varying, which affects such coupled dynamics. For that, we propose a coupled resource-epidemic (RNR-SIS) dynamic model (coupled model for short) on a time-varying multiplex network to synchronously simulate the resource diffusion and epidemic spreading in dynamic social networks. The equilibrium analysis of the coupled model is conducted in a general scenario where the resource generation varies between susceptible and infected states and the recovery rate changes between resourceful and noresource states. By using the microscopic Markov chain approach and Monte Carlo simulations, we determine a probabilistic framework of the intralayer and interlayer dynamic processes of the coupled model and obtain the outbreak threshold of epidemic spreading. Meanwhile, the experimental results show the trivially asymmetric interactions between resource diffusion and epidemic spreading. They also indicate that the stronger activity heterogeneity and the larger contact capacity of individuals in the resource layer can more greatly promote resource diffusion, effectively suppressing epidemic spreading. However, these two individual characters in the epidemic layer can cause more resource depletion, which greatly promotes epidemic spreading. Furthermore, we also find that the contact capacity finitely impacts the coupled dynamics of resource diffusion and epidemic spreading.

Based on the study of the movement rule of the rock strata under the influence of the mining speed in the typical working face of Dongjiahe coal mine, the distribution of microseismic events and the variation characteristics of microseismic parameters in the slow and fast advancing stage are compared and analyzed, and the mechanism of the rock strata activity under the influence of the mining advancing speed is revealed from the perspective of the microfracture. The results show that the movement of the roof strata and the stress adjustment of surrounding rock have certain timeliness. The maximum advanced distance of microseismic events in the slow and fast stages is 185 m and 130 m, respectively, and the maximum lag distance of microseismic events in the goaf is 120 m and 180 m, respectively. The time of stress adjustment of surrounding rock is short, and the load transfer of the roof is insufficient. The advanced distance of microseismic events is increased, and the lag distance decreases. The percentage of microseismic events in the total number of events is 47% and 38%, respectively, in the slow and fast stages of advancing. With the increase of mining speed, the intensity of roof strata activity in the goaf is weakened. The rock failure decreases and the volume of broken block increases, and roof collapse and rotary subsidence are insufficient. During the nonpressure period, the maximum development elevation of microseismic events is +350 m and +300 m, respectively, in the slow and fast stages, while with the development elevation of microseismic events in the roof pressure near +390 m, increasing the mining speed cannot change the final failure height of the overburden. During the analysis period of roof pressure, the concentrated release of microseismic energy in the faster stage is 183% of that in the slower stage. The increase of large moment magnitude event frequency leads to the decrease of b value. The risk of roof instability and strata behavior increases.
