The evolution and spread of antibiotic resistance are problems with important consequences for bacterial disease treatment. Antibiotic use in animal production and the subsequent export of antibiotic resistance elements in animal manure to soil is a concern. Recent reports suggest that exposure of pathogenic bacteria to glyphosate increases antibiotic resistance. We review these reports and identify soil processes likely to affect the persistence of glyphosate, antibiotic resistance elements, and their interactions. The herbicide molecular target of glyphosate is not shared by antibiotics, indicating that target-site cross-resistance cannot account for increased antibiotic resistance. The mechanisms of bacterial resistance to glyphosate and antibiotics differ, and bacterial tolerance or resistance to glyphosate does not coincide with increased resistance to antibiotics. Glyphosate in the presence of antibiotics can increase the activity of efflux pumps, which confer tolerance to glyphosate, allowing for an increased frequency of mutation for antibiotic resistance. Such effects are not unique to glyphosate, as other herbicides and chemical pollutants can have the same effect, although glyphosate is used in much larger quantities on agricultural soils than most other chemicals. Most evidence indicates that glyphosate is not mutagenic in bacteria. Some studies suggest that glyphosate enhances genetic exchange of antibiotic-resistance elements through effects on membrane permeability. Glyphosate and antibiotics are often present together in manure-treated soil for at least part of the crop-growing season, and initial studies indicate that glyphosate may increase abundance of antibiotic resistance genes in soil, but longer term investigations under realistic field conditions are needed. Although there are demonstratable interactions among glyphosate, bacteria, and antibiotic resistance, there is limited evidence that normal use of glyphosate poses a substantial risk for increased occurrence of antibiotic-resistant, bacterial pathogens. Residue of energetic formulations, which is deposited on military training grounds following incomplete detonation, poses biotic hazards. This residue can be transported off-site, adsorb to soil clays and organic matter, transform or degrade, or taken up by plants and animals. Its harmful effects can be mitigated by localizing the energetics at the site of initial deposition using soil amendments and allowing them to bio- and photodegrade in situ. Small plots with coarse loamy soil were used to study the effect of gypsum (CaSO 4 ·2H 2 O) on transport and redistribution under simulated rainfall of various sizes of insensitive munition explosive (IMX)-104 particles, which consist of 3-nitro-1,2,4-triazol-5-one (NTO), 2,4-dinitroanisole (DNAN), hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX), and octahydro-1,3,5,7-tertranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocine (HMX). The addition of gypsum more than doubled infiltration and decreased sediment loss by 16% compared to the control. The post-rainfall mass balance of IMX-104 in the order from greater to smaller pools was as follows: (1) soil surface retention, (2) off-site loss to overland flow, and (3) sub-surface infiltration. Overall, the application of gypsum significantly decreased concentration and the total mass loss of dissolved DNAN, RDX, and HMX in surface runoff. In addition, gypsum significantly decreased (for NTO, DNAN, and HMX) or delayed (for NTO, DNAN, RDX, and HMX) the peak discharge of <2 mm particulate energetics. The infiltration of NTO in the gypsum treatment was fivefold greater than in the control. Moreover, DNAN and RDX were also present in infiltration, while in the gypsum-free control none were found. Gypsum shifted the total mass balance of energetics toward subsurface flow. Drinking water treatment residuals (DWTRs), solid by-products of drinking water treatment, are dominated by calcium (Ca), iron (Fe), or aluminum (Al), depending on the coagulant used. DWTRs are often landfilled, but current research is exploring options for beneficial reuse. Previous studies have shown that Al- and Fe-rich materials have potential to reduce the mobility of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Here, we investigated how amending biosolids with 5% wt/wt DWTRs affected plant bioavailable PFAS in two different simulated scenarios: (1) agricultural scenario with Solanum lycopersicum (tomato) grown in soil amended with an agronomically relevant rate of DWTR-amended biosolids (0.9% w/w, resulting in 0.045% w/w DWTR in the biosolids-amended soil) and (2) mine reclamation scenario examining PFAS uptake by Lolium perenne (perennial ryegrass) grown in soil that received DWTR-amended biosolids amendment at a rate consistent with the mine remediation (13% w/w, resulting in 0.65% w/w DWTR in the biosolids-amended soil). Amending biosolids with Ca-DWTR significantly reduced perfluorobutanoic acid (PFBA) uptake in ryegrass and perfluorohexanoic acid uptake in tomatoes, possibly due to DWTR-induced pH elevation, while Fe-DWTR amendment reduced PFBA bioaccumulation in ryegrass. The Al-DWTR did not induce a significant reduction in accumulated PFAS compared to controls. Heavy metals emitted by vehicles have the potential to accumulate in soil near roadways, threatening the health of soil, plants, animals, and humans. This study evaluates Pb, Zn, and Cu levels in forest O-horizons, mineral soil, and earthworms near busy roadways in the metro-Washington, DC area. The study sites comprised road-edge environments within urban parks. Six transects were sampled in each park, collecting mineral soil at 1- to 30-m distances from the road edge and dividing it into eight depth increments (0-30 cm). O-horizon plant litter and earthworm samples were also collected at these locations. All samples underwent total Pb, Zn, and Cu X-ray fluorescence analysis. Generally, Pb concentrations (in upper 0-10 cm) were 1-4.8 times higher at 3 m compared to 30 m from the road, with less consistent gradients for Zn and Cu. Concentrations peaked near the soil surface, with lower levels in the O-horizon above and deeper soil layers. Leaded vehicle fuel was phased out by the early 1980s, but legacy Pb contamination persisted in roadside forests, averaging 365 mg kg -1 in the upper 10 cm within 3 m of the roadway (< EPA action level of 1200 mg kg -1 for non-play areas). Zinc, often present in vehicle tires, accumulated in earthworms to 192-592 mg kg -1 , concentrations exceeding those in the soil, while Pb and Cu were less concentrated in earthworms than in either O-horizon or mineral soil. Sustainable reuse of biosolids as fertilizers is being threatened by the presence of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in our waste stream warranting research on strategies that will minimize PFAS mobility from land-applied biosolids. Here, we evaluated the ability of waste-derived sorbents aluminum chlorohydrate water treatment residuals (ACH-WTRs, 1 wt%) and biosolids-based biochar (1.5 wt%) to reduce mobility of PFAS in columns with 3 wt% biosolids-amended soils with and without sorbent layered on top of soil only and operated under transient unsaturated conditions. Cycles of simulated rain events of approximately three pore volumes distributed over a 4-day period followed by 3 days of drying were imposed for 6 months. Total PFAS concentrations in collected leachates were lower in the sorbent-treated columns compared to the control columns. Biochar outperformed the ACH-WTR with 41% versus 32% lower total PFAS in leachate, respectively, compared to the control. The most significant mitigation effect was observed with PFOS (perfluorooctane sulfonate) with 68% and 62% less PFOS in the leachates from the columns treated with ACH-WTR or biochar compared to the control, respectively. Carbon- and nutrient-rich biosolids are used in agriculture and land reclamation. However, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) typically present in biosolids raise concerns of PFAS leaching to groundwater and plant uptake. Here, we investigated PFAS persistence and leaching from biosolids applied to a site constructed artificially to mimic degraded soils. Treatments included biosolids and biosolids blended with mulch applied at different rates to attain either one and five times the agronomic N rate for vegetable crops and a control treatment with synthetic urea and triple superphosphate fertilizer. Leachates were collected for a 2-year period from 15-cm depth zero-tension drainage lysimeters. Soils were analyzed post biosolids application. PFAS were quantified using isotope-dilution, solid-phase extraction and liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry. Leachate profiles exemplified an initial high total PFAS concentration, followed by a sharp decline and subsequent small fluctuations attributed to pre-existing soil conditions and rainfall patterns. Quantifiable PFAS in leachate were proportional to biosolids application rates. Short-chain perfluoroalkyl acids (CF 2  < 6) were dominant in leachate, while the percentage of longer chains homologues was higher in soils. A 43% biosolids blend with mulch resulted in 21% lower PFAS leachate concentrations even with the blend application rate being 1.5 times higher than biosolids due to the blend's lower N-content. The blending effect was more pronounced for long-chain perfluoroalkyl sulfonic acids that have a greater retention by soils and the air-water interface. The present review discusses the growing concern of microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) in soil, together with their sources, concentration, distribution, and impact on soil microorganisms, human health, and ecosystems. MPs and NPs can enter the soil through various pathways, such as agricultural activities, sewage sludge application, and atmospheric deposition. Once in the soil, they can accumulate in the upper layers and affect soil structure, water retention, and nutrient availability. The presence of MPs and NPs in soil can also have ecological consequences, acting as carriers for pollutants and contaminants, such as heavy metals and persistent organic pollutants. Additionally, the leaching of chemicals and additives from MPs and NPs can pose public health risks through the food web and groundwater contamination. The detection and analyses of MPs and NPs in soil can be challenging, and methods involve spectroscopic and microscopy techniques, such as Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. To mitigate the presence and effects of MPs and NPs in soil, it is essential to reduce plastic waste production, improve waste management practices, and adopt sustainable agricultural practices. Effective mitigation measures include implementing stricter regulations on plastic use, promoting biodegradable alternatives, and enhancing recycling infrastructure. Additionally, soil amendments, such as biochar and compost, can help immobilize MPs and NPs, reducing their mobility and bioavailability. Phosphorus (P) fertilizers promote soil petroleum-hydrocarbon (PHC) bioremediation by correcting carbon-to-P ratio imbalances. While these inputs create conditions favorable to microbial growth, areas of a site or an entire site with low degradation rates (i.e., "stalled") occur for unknown reasons. We hypothesized that soil conditions limit P bioavailability, leading to stalls in PHC bioremediation, and adding the correct P amendment restarts microbial activity. Soils were collected and characterized from four cold calcareous PHC-impacted sites in Saskatchewan, Canada, undergoing bioremediation. A generalized linear mixed model identified that regions with lower degradation rates possessed a neutral pH with high magnetic and salinity values. In a subsequent laboratory experiment, the proportion of benzene degraded at greater rates within active (i.e., higher degradation rates) than stalled soils, thereby following model predictions (p-value = 0.19, Kruskal-Wallis). The PHC degradation efficiency of different P amendments was tested by doping stalled soils (n = 3) with one of five treatments: 0 (control), 0 (autoclaved control), or 50 mg phosphate kg -1 soil as sodium diphosphate, triethyl phosphate, or tripolyphosphate. Tripolyphosphate accelerated benzene degradation (75.5 ± 5.4%) in one stalled soil (Outlook 323) and increased degradation non-significantly (43.9 ± 9.4%) in another (Allan 917). Alternatively, the final sample (Davidson 421) possessed the greatest benzene removal with no amendments. This implies that soil P bioavailability may not be the sole cause of decreased microbial activity. Urban soils contaminated by historical and current anthropogenic activities present an alarming human health risk requiring redress. Federal and state governments continue to lower residential soil lead (Pb) screening standards, which will likely require new risk-based approaches to address urban soil Pb contamination. Phosphorus (P) soil amendments have long been presented as a solution to sequester Pb, thereby reducing exposure risk. In this study, P-containing sources (biosolids incinerator ash, poultry litter, biosolids compost, and triple superphosphate) of varying solubilities were assessed as soil amendments to reduce Pb bioaccessibility and serve as an inexpensive remediation strategy for urban soil. Contaminated soil (1624 mg kg -1  Pb, pH 7.43) from Cleveland, OH, was treated with the four P-containing soil amendments at a 1:5 Pb:P molar ratio and two combination treatments at 1:10 Pb:P molar ratio and incubated for 3 months. A batch equilibration analysis was also conducted to assess reduction in in vitro bioaccessible Pb (IVBA Pb). Pb bioaccessibility was evaluated using US EPA Method 1340 at pH 1.5 and the Physiologically Based Extraction Test pH 2.5 at 1 and 3 months. In general, treatments were ineffective in reducing IVBA Pb regardless of IVBA extraction method, incubation duration, batch equilibration analyses, or P source. The results of this study suggest P-containing amendments are not suitable to address Pb exposure in the study soil. Site-specific efficacy testing to determine reductions in IVBA Pb from P-containing amendments should be performed before making recommendations for remediation of Pb-contaminated urban soil., (© 2024 The Author(s). Microplastics (MPs), recognized as emerging pollutants, pose a significant threat to diverse organisms and have adverse effects on agricultural soil. High-density polyethylene (HDPE) holds a prominent position among prevalent forms of MPs. In the current investigations, the impact of HDPE was assessed at four different concentrations (0.25%, 0.5%, 0.75%, and 1.0%) on agricultural soil, microbial population, exoenzymes activities including amylase, cellulase, and invertase, and alteration in carbon-to-nitrogen (C/N) ratio. Both bacterial and fungal populations exhibited a non-concentration-dependent response to different concentrations of HDPE over time. In this study, we refer to the concentrations of 0.25%, 0.5%, 0.75%, and 1.0% as HT1, HT2, HT3, and HT4, respectively. Initial MP application significantly reduced bacterial colony counts for HT1, HT2, and HT4, while HT3 showed no significant change. On the 60th day, HT1 and HT3 exhibited a higher bacterial colony count compared to the control. On the other hand, fungal populations increased to maximum on day 1 but displayed no distinct time-dependent trend from days 15 to 60. Furthermore, enzyme activities decreased with increasing concentrations of MPs over an extended period. Molecular docking studies suggest that HDPE can hinder enzyme activity by forming hydrogen bonds with enzymes. The C/N ratio was found to be significantly higher in MP-treated soils on the 60th day relative to control, suggesting relatively slower degradation of carbon compounds in the MP-treated soils., (© 2024 The Author(s). While mining provides valuable metals and minerals to meet societal demands, it can cause environmental contamination from the residuals (i.e., tailings) of mining. Tailings are often acidic, laden with heavy metals, and lacking adequate nutrients and physical conditions for plant growth, precluding the establishment of plant cover to reduce the offsite movement of mining wastes. This paper describes a case study at the Formosa Mine in Douglas County, Oregon, where tailings were amended with a mixture of lime, biosolids, biochar, and microbial inoculum to facilitate establishment of Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii [Mirbel] Franco) seedlings. Results show that the tailings pH increased, and Douglas-fir seedlings survived and grew with these amendments. After 2 years, pH did, however, decrease in some downslope locations and was associated with an increase in tree mortality. This suggests that tailings conditions should be monitored, and amendments should be reapplied as needed, particularly in areas receiving acidic runoff from unamended upslope tailings, until the seedlings are fully established. This study not only provides a prescription for the addition of biochar and other amendments to enhance plant growth for revegetation purposes in low-pH, metal-contaminated mine tailings, but it also demonstrates a method that can be used to address similar problems at other mine sites., (Published 2024. Soil structural degradation and water erosion processes were observed even in no-tillage schemes in the Pampas region. Within these conservation systems, agrochemical application per hectare is one of the highest globally. Thus, this entails a serious risk of water contamination. The objectives of this study were to (1) test the hypothesis that the hydrological dynamics and sediment concentration related to surface runoff were conditioned by soil structure regardless of the presence of maize (Zea mays L.) crop residue and (2) assess the incidence of maize crop residue on glyphosate and aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA) concentration in runoff. The soil under study corresponded to Arroyo Dulce Series (Typic Argiudoll silty loam soil). Rain simulations were performed in the laboratory on undisturbed soil samples. Total runoff and infiltration rate were similar between treatments with C(+) and without C(-) maize crop residues (C(+) 1381.40 mL and 14.27 mm h -1 , C(-): 1529.70 mL and 21.67 mm h -1 ). The C(-) treatments showed a higher sediment concentration than C(+) (1.58 and 0.42 g 100 mL -1 , respectively). Glyphosate and AMPA average values in runoff were 15.9 and 33.9 µg L -1 . High variability of the hydro-physical properties and occurrence of soil structure, particularly platy ones, were detected. The hydrological variables were conditioned mainly by the occurrence of platy structures regardless of crop residue presence. Glyphosate concentration was increased in the first runoff event by the presence of corn residues, while AMPA concentrations were higher in the second runoff event in both residue treatments. In this study, maize residue on the soil surface protected the soil from sediment detachment but did not change runoff or infiltration. The presence of undesired agrochemicals residues in soil and water poses risks to both human health and the environment. The behavior of pesticides in soil depends both on the physico-chemical properties of pesticides and soil type. This study examined the adsorption-desorption and leaching behavior of the maize herbicide tembotrione in soils of the upper (UGPZ), trans (TGPZ) and middle Gangetic plain zones of India. Soil samples were extracted using acetone followed by partitioning with dichloromethane, whereas liquid-liquid extraction using dichloromethane was used for aqueous samples. Residues of tembotrione and its metabolite TCMBA, {2-chloro-4-(methylsulfonyl)-3-[(2,2,2-trifluoroethoxy) methyl] benzoic acid}, were quantified using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. The data revealed that tembotrione adsorption decreased with increasing pH and dissolved organic matter but increased with salinity. The maximum adsorption occurred at pH 4, 0.01 m sodium citrate and 4 g/L NaCl, with corresponding Freundlich constants of 1.83, 2.28 and 3.32, respectively. The hysteresis index <1 indicated faster adsorption than desorption. Leaching studies under different flow conditions revealed least mobility in UGPZ soil and high mobility in TGPZ soil, consistent with groundwater ubiquity scores of 4.27 and 4.81, respectively. Soil amendments decreased tembotrione mobility in the order: unamended > wheat straw ash > wheat straw > farm yard manure > compost. Phosphorus (P) and metal accumulation in manured agricultural soils and subsequent losses to waterways have been extensively studied; however, the magnitudes and the factors governing their losses during spring snowmelt flooding are less known. We examined the P and metal release from long-term manured soil to floodwater under simulated snowmelt flooding with recent manure additions. Intact soil columns collected from field plots located in Randolph, Southern Manitoba, 2 weeks after liquid swine manure treatments (surface-applied, injected, or control with no recent manure addition) were flooded and incubated for 8 weeks at 4 ± 1°C to simulate snowmelt conditions. Floodwater (syringe filtered through 0.45 µm) and soil porewater (extracted using Rhizon-Mom samplers) samples were periodically extracted and analyzed for dissolved reactive phosphorus (DRP), pH, zinc (Zn), manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), magnesium (Mg), calcium (Ca), and arsenic (As). Mean floodwater DRP concentrations (mg L -1 ) for manure injected (2.0 ± 0.26), surface-applied (2.6 ± 0.26), and control (2.2 ± 0.26) treatments did not differ significantly. Despite manure application, DRP loss to floodwater did not significantly increase compared to the control, possibly due to the elevated residual soil P at this site from the long-term manure use. At the end of simulated flooding, the DRP concentrations increased by 1.5-fold and 5-fold in porewater and floodwater, respectively. Metal(loid) concentrations were not affected by manure treatments in general, except for Zn and Mg on certain days. Organic amendments often reduce the bioaccessibility of soil lead (Pb) but not that of soil arsenic (As). The effect of Pb on As bioaccessibility is rarely studied in co-contaminated soils. In a field study, we assessed the effect of mushroom compost, leaf compost, noncomposted biosolids, and composted biosolids amendments on As speciation in a co-contaminated (As and Pb) soil at 7, 349, and 642 days after amending soils and the change of As speciation during an in vitro bioaccessibility extraction (gastric solution, pH 2.5) using bulk X-ray absorption near-edge structure spectroscopy. Soil was contaminated by coal combustion and other diffuse sources and had low As bioaccessibility (7%-12%). Unamended soil had As(III) sorbed onto pyrite (As(III)-pyrite; ∼60%) and As(V) adsorbed onto Fe oxy(hydr)oxides (As(V)-Fh; ∼40%). In amended soils, except in composted biosolids-amended soils, at 7 days, As(V)-Fh decreased to 15%-26% and redistributed into As(III)-Fh and/or As(III)-pyrite. This transformation was most pronounced in mushroom compost amended soil resulting in a significant (46%) increase of As bioaccessibility compared to the unamended soil. Composted biosolids-amended soils had relatively stable As(V)-Fh. Lead arsenate formed during the in vitro extraction in amended soils, except in composted biosolids-amended soils. Arsenic speciation and bioaccessibility were similar in 349- and 642-day in all the amended and unamended soils. Reduction of As(V)-Fh to As(III) forms in the short term in three of the amended soils showed the potential to increase As bioaccessibility. Continuous application of dairy manure to soils can lead to excessive phosphorus (P) accumulation (legacy P), which requires understanding for managing nutrient availability and leaching. This study was conducted in Kimberly, ID, where dairy manure or conventional fertilizer was applied to calcareous soil plots under continuous crop rotations for 8 years (2013-2020), followed by 2 years with no amendment. To understand legacy P behavior in the soils, total P, organic/inorganic P, and plant-available Olsen bicarbonate P and Truog extraction measurements were made from surface and subsurface samples. Additionally, P in soluble and less soluble calcium phosphate (Ca-P) minerals was estimated using selective extractions, and P desorption was measured in a flow-through reactor. Manure amendments resulted in increased total soil P and plant-available P, particularly in the initial 5 years. In the 0- to 30-cm depth, 54%-65% of the soil P added from manure amendments was readily soluble by the Truog P test. Phosphorus released from the 2022 manure-amended soil in the desorption experiments was about five times greater than the fertilizer-amended soil, suggesting high leaching potential. After 8 years of manure amendment, subsurface Olsen-P levels exceeded the 40 mg kg -1 management threshold, suggesting P adsorption potential of the surface had become saturated, allowing for P leaching. In the manure-amended surface soils, calcium phosphate minerals increased compared to the controls. Methylmercury (MeHg) is a human and environmental toxin produced in flooded soils. Little is known about MeHg in rice (Oryza Sativa L.) fields in Sacramento Valley, California. The objectives of this study were to quantify mercury fractions in irrigation water and within rice fields and to determine their mercury pools in surface water, soil, and grain. Soil, grain, and surface water (dissolved and particulate) MeHg and total mercury (THg) were monitored in six commercial rice fields throughout a winter fallow season and subsequent growing season. Both dissolved and particulate mercury fractions were higher in fallow season rice field water. Total suspended solids and particulate mercury concentrations were positively correlated (r = 0.99 and 0.98 for THg and MeHg, respectively), suggesting that soil MeHg was suspended in the water column and potentially exported. Dissolved THg and MeHg concentrations were positively correlated with absorbance at 254 nm (r = 0.47 and 0.58, respectively) in fallow season field water. In the growing season, fields with higher irrigation water MeHg concentrations (due to recycled water use) had elevated field-water MeHg (r = 0.86) and grain MeHg concentrations (r = 0.96). Based on a mass balance analysis, soil mercury pools were orders of magnitude larger than surface water or grain mercury pools; however, fallow season drainage and grain harvest were the primary pathways for MeHg export. Historical applications of manures and fertilizers at rates exceeding crop P removal in the Mid-Atlantic region (United States) have resulted in decades of increased water quality degradation from P losses in agricultural runoff. As such, many growers in this region face restrictions on future P applications. An improved understanding of the fate, transformations, and availability of P is needed to manage P-enriched soils. We paired chemical extractions (i.e., Mehlich-3, water extractable P, and chemical fractionation) with nondestructive methods (i.e., x-ray absorption near edge structure [XANES] spectroscopy and x-ray fluorescence [XRF]) to investigate P dynamics in eight P-enriched Mid-Atlantic soils with various management histories. Chemical fractionation and XRF data were used to support XANES linear combination fits, allowing for identification of various Al, Ca, and Fe phosphates and P sorbed phases in soils amended with fertilizer, poultry litter, or dairy manure. Management history and P speciation were used to make qualitative comparisons between the eight legacy P soils; we also speculate about how P speciation may affect future management of these soils with and without additional P applications. With continued P applications, we expect an increase in semicrystalline Al and Fe-P, P sorbed to Al (hydro)oxides, and insoluble Ca-P species in these soils for all P sources. Under drawdown scenarios, we expect plant P uptake first from semicrystalline Al and Fe phosphates followed by P sorbed phases. Premise: Plants grown at high densities show increased tolerance to heavy metals for reasons that are not clear. A potential explanation is the release of citrate by plant roots, which binds metals and prevents uptake. Thus, pooled exudates at high plant densities might increase tolerance. We tested this exclusion facilitation hypothesis using mutants of Arabidopsis thaliana defective in citrate exudation., Methods: Wild type Arabidopsis and two allelic mutants for the Ferric Reductase Defective 3 (FRD3) gene were grown at four densities and watered with copper sulfate at four concentrations. Plants were harvested before bolting and dried. Shoot biomass was measured, and shoot material and soil were digested in nitric acid. Copper contents were determined by atomic absorption., Results: In the highest-copper treatment, density-dependent reduction in toxicity was observed in the wild type but not in FRD3 mutants. For both mutants, copper concentrations per gram biomass were up to seven times higher than for wild type plants, depending on density and copper treatment. In all genotypes, total copper accumulation was greater at higher plant densities. Plant size variation increased with density and copper treatment because of heterogeneous distribution of copper throughout the soil., Conclusions: These results support the hypothesis that citrate exudation is responsible for density-dependent reductions in toxicity of metals. Density-dependent copper uptake and growth in contaminated soils underscores the importance of density in ecotoxicological testing. A greenhouse experiment was conducted to assess the effect of phytoremediation and biochar application on hydrocarbon degradation in crude oil-contaminated soils. The experiment consisted of four levels of biochar application (0, 5, 10, and 15 t/ha) and the presence or absence of Vigna unguiculata (cowpea; +C, -C) replicated thrice and arranged in a 4 × 2 × 3 factorial completely randomized design. Samples were taken on days 0, 30, and 60 for total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) analysis. A significantly higher TPH degradation efficiency of 69.2% (7033 mg/kg) was observed in contaminated soils amended with 15 t/ha biochar only after 60 days of incubation. Highly significant interactions were observed between biochar × plant (p < 0.001) and biochar × days (p = 0.0073). Biochar also improved the growth of plants in contaminated soils, with the highest height of 23.50 cm and stem girth of 2.10 cm obtained when plants were amended with 15 t/ha biochar at 6 weeks after planting. Vineyard soils can be contaminated by copper (Cu) due to successive applications of fungicides and organic fertilizers. Soil remediation can be addressed by altering soil properties or selecting efficient Cu-extracting cover crops tolerant to Cu toxicity. Our objectives were to synthesize the Cu-extracting efficiency by plant species tested in Brazil, classify them according to Cu resistance to toxicity, and assess the effect of soil properties on attenuating Cu toxicity. We retrieved results from 41 species and cultivars, totaling 565 observations. Freshly added Cu varied between 50 and 600 mg Cu kg -1 of soil across studies. The partition of Cu removal between the above- and below-ground portions was scaled as a logistic variable to facilitate data synthesis. The data were analyzed using the Adaboost machine learning model. Model accuracy (predicted vs. actual values) reached R 2  = 0.862 after relating species, cultivar, Cu addition, clay, SOM, pH, soil test P, and Cu as features to predict the logistic target variable. Tissue Cu concentration varied between 7 and 105 mg Cu kg -1 in the shoot and between 73 and 1340 mg Cu kg -1 in the roots. Among soil properties, organic matter and soil test Cu most influenced the accuracy of the model. Phaseolus vulgaris, Brassica juncea, Ricinus communis, Hordeum vulgare, Sorghum vulgare, Cajanus cajan, Solanum lycopersicum, and Crotolaria spectabilis were the most efficient Cu-extracting cover crops, as shown by positive values of the logistic variable (shoot removal > root removal). Monosodium methanearsonate (MSMA), a selective contact herbicide, is a sodium salt of monomethyl arsenic acid (MMA or MAA). This paper focuses on the environmental fate of MMA. Decades of research have shown that a significant portion of applied MSMA drips to soil and is sorbed quickly. The fraction available for leaching or biological uptake decreases at a biphasic rate, first rapidly and then at a slower rate. A soil column study was designed to obtain quantitative information about MMA sorption and transformation and the effects of different environmental variables on these processes, in conditions simulating the environment of MSMA use on cotton and turf. Using 14 C-MSMA, this study quantified MSMA-derived arsenic species and differentiated between added arsenic and soil background levels. Similar behavior of MSMA was observed across all test systems with respect to sorption, transformation, and mobility, despite differences in soil type and rainfall treatment. All soil columns exhibited a rapid sorption of added MMA followed by continual sorption of residues into the soil matrix. Within the first 2 days, only 20%-25% of radioactivity was extracted by water. On day 90, less than 3.1% of added MMA was in a water extractable phase. MMA sorption was most rapid in the soil with the higher clay content. Dominant extractable arsenic species were MMA, dimethylarsinic acid, and arsenate, indicating that methylation and demethylation occurred. Minimizing arsenic intake from food consumption is a key aspect of the public health response in arsenic (As)-contaminated regions. In many of these regions, rice is the predominant staple food. Here, we present a validated maximum allowable concentration of total As in paddy soil and provide the first derivation of a maximum allowable soil concentration for bioavailable As. We have previously used meta-analysis to predict the maximum allowable total As in soil based on decision tree (DT) and logistic regression (LR) models. The models were defined using the maximum tolerable concentration (MTC) of As in rice grains as per the codex recommendation. In the present study, we validated these models using three test data sets derived from purposely collected field data. The DT model performed better than the LR in terms of accuracy and Matthews correlation coefficient (MCC). Therefore, the DT estimated maximum allowable total As in paddy soil of 14 mg kg -1 could confidently be used as an appropriate guideline value. We further used the purposely collected field data to predict the concentration of bioavailable As in the paddy soil with the help of random forest (RF), gradient boosting machine (GBM), and LR models. The category of grain As (MTC) was considered as the dependent variable; bioavailable As (BAs), total As (TAs), pH, organic carbon (OC), available phosphorus (AvP), and available iron (AvFe) were the predictor variables. LR performed better than RF and GBM in terms of accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, kappa, precision, log loss, F1score, and MCC. From the better-performing LR model, bioavailable As (BAs), TAs, AvFe, and OC were significant variables for grain As. From the partial dependence plots (PDP) and individual conditional expectation (ICE) of the LR model, 5.70 mg kg -1 was estimated to be the limit for BAs in soil., (© 2023 The Authors. Residual concentrations of glyphosate and its main transformation product aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA) are often observed in soils. The factors controlling their biodegradation are currently not well understood. We analyzed sorption-limited biodegradation of glyphosate and AMPA in soil with a set of microcosm experiments. A mechanistic model that accounts for equilibrium and kinetic sorption facilitated interpretation of the experimental results. Both compounds showed a biphasic dissipation with an initial fast (up to Days 7-10) and subsequent slower transformation rate, pointing to sorption-limited degradation. Glyphosate transformation was well described by considering only equilibrium sorption. Model simulations suggested that only 0.02-0.13% of total glyphosate was present in the soil solution and thus bioavailable. Glyphosate transformation was rapid in solution (time required for 50 % dissipation of the total initially added chemical [DT 50 ] = 3.9 min), and, despite strong equilibrium sorption, total glyphosate in soil dissipated quickly (DT 50  = 2.4 d). Aminomethylphosphonic acid dissipation kinetics could only be described when considering both equilibrium and kinetic sorption. In comparison to glyphosate, the model simulations showed that a higher proportion of total AMPA was dissolved and directly bioavailable (0.27-3.32%), but biodegradation of dissolved AMPA was slower (DT 50  = 1.9 h). The model-based data interpretation suggests that kinetic sorption strongly reduces AMPA bioavailability, leading to increased AMPA persistence in soil (DT 50  = 12 d). Thus, strong sorption combined with rapid degradation points to low risks of glyphosate leaching by vertical transport through soil in the absence of preferential flow. Addition of manganese(IV) oxides (MnO 2 ) and zeolite can affect the mobility of As and V in soils due to geochemical changes that have not been studied well in calcareous, flooded soils. This study evaluated the mobility of As and V in flooded soils surface-amended with MnO 2 or zeolite. A simulated summer flooding study was conducted for 8 weeks using intact soil columns from four calcareous soils. Redox potential was measured in soils, whereas pH, major cations, and As and V concentrations were measured biweekly in pore water and floodwater. Aqueous As and V species were modeled at 0, 4, and 8 weeks after flooding (WAF) using Visual MINTEQ modeling software with input parameters of redox potential, temperature, pH, total alkalinity, and concentrations of major cations and anions. Aqueous As concentrations were below the critical thresholds (<100 μg L -1 ), whereas aqueous V concentrations exceeded the threshold for sensitive aquatic species (2-80 μg L -1 ). MnO 2 -amended soils were reduced to sub-oxic levels, whereas zeolite-amended and unamended soils were reduced to anoxic levels by 8 WAF. MnO 2 decreased As and V mobilities, whereas zeolite had no effect on As but increased V mobility, compared to unamended soils. Arsenic mobility increased under anoxic conditions, and V mobility increased under oxic and alkaline pH conditions. Conversion of As(V) to As(III) and V(V) to V(IV) was regulated by MnO 2 in flooded soils. Excessive Cd accumulation in rice grain has caused chronic Cd diseases in humans. In most crops, 100 times more Zn than Cd strongly inhibits Cd uptake and translocation. However, this response is not found for rice (Oryza sativa L.), which was found to have an unusual Cd uptake pattern compared with other crops, such as spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.). Moreover, studies on shared transporters between Zn and Cd using normal solution experiments with traditional high concentrations of metal ions may result in irrelevant interactions. Therefore, we developed ethyleneglycoltetraacetate-buffered nutrient solutions in this work. Rice and spinach seedlings were grown under calibrated low Cd 2+ activity and low to phytotoxic Zn 2+ activity levels while buffering other micronutrient cations at sufficient levels. Results showed that as rice grew with pZn 2+  = 8.1-5.4, root Cd and shoot Ni decreased significantly and gradually. However, shoot Cd and Mn in rice decreased slightly with the increase of solution Zn 2+ from deficiency to sufficiency and then increased at toxic Zn 2+ solution (pZn 2+  = 5.4). The shoot/root ratios of Cd in rice under toxic pZn 2+ (5.6 and 5.4 pZn 2+ activity) were significantly increased (p < .05). It could be concluded that rice absorption of Cd is not inhibited by co-contaminating (toxic) Zn. For spinach, with Zn varying from pZn 2+  = 8.1-5.7, both shoot and root Cd substantially decreased, as did shoot Ni. Arsenic (As) contamination is a widespread problem. Continued and concerted effort in exploring sustainable remediation strategies is required, with in situ immobilization emerging as a promising option. This work valorized a waste by-product from olive (Olea europaea L.) milling into functional hydrochar (HC). The HC was then transformed into iron oxide-encapsulated carbon with three different iron loading rates (10, 25, and 50% w/w of iron chloride hexahydrate added to the olive mill waste feedstock). The HC and the three iron oxide-encapsulated carbon materials were then tested in a pot trial using a 3% w/w application rate as a means to immobilize As in a mining-contaminated soil (2,580 ± 110 mg kg -1 As). After a 45-d incubation period, the effect of adding the amendments on As mobility and bioaccessibility compared with an untreated control was measured using a sequential extraction procedure and in vitro bioaccessibility, respectively. All four treatments resulted in a decrease in mobility and in vitro bioaccessibility as compared with the control. Specifically, As in the mobile phases was up to 35% less than the in control, whereas bioaccessibility was 21.8% in the control and ranged from 17.5 to 12.3% in the treatments. The efficiency of amendments to immobilize As increased with the iron content of the developed materials. Phosphorus (P) loss from agricultural land is a persistent environmental challenge, and a better understanding of the impact of continuous cover crops (CCs) growth on soil P sorption and desorption characteristics is needed to inform mitigation strategies. This study investigated the impact of CC species on soil P pools, sorption characteristics, and dissolved reactive P (DRP) after 9 yr. Soil samples were collected at 0-to-2- and 2-to-4-cm soil depths from a silty clay loam Mollisol. Treatments included cereal rye (Secale cereal L.; CR), annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum, AR), oats/radish (Avena sativa L./Raphanus sativus L.; OR), and no CC (CN). A sorption experiment was done with varying P concentrations for 24 h equilibration, and sorption parameters were estimated using the Langmuir model. The DRP was estimated using sequential soil extraction by 0.01 M CaCl 2 for 5 h. Long-term CC significantly decreased P sorption maximum but increased binding energy relative to CN. Annual ryegrass significantly decreased soil water extractable P, Mehlich 3 P, and degree of P saturation relative to OR and CN at the 0-to-2-cm depth. Annual ryegrass and CR significantly decreased desorbed DRP by an average of 42 and 45% relative to CN and OR, respectively, at the 0-to-2-cm depth. These results demonstrated that long-term grass species decreased the concentrations of labile P pools and desorbed DRP at the soil runoff interaction zone. The 1972 U.S. Clean Water Act set forth the generation of biosolids. In Colorado, biosolids land application research began in 1976 and continues today. Pastureland research suggested that sewage effluent could effectively be land applied to benefit aboveground plant growth and to polish water prior to reaching receiving waters. Forest wildfire-affected ecosystems can also benefit from biosolids applications; application rates of up to 80 Mg ha -1 can lead to greater plant establishment, soil microbial activity, and nutrient turnover and reduced nutrient and heavy metal concentrations in runoff below livestock and USEPA drinking water standards. Long-term (24-yr) observations in oil shale-mined lands showed that biosolids (up to 224 Mg ha -1 ) can have a positive effect on microbial-mediated nutrient cycling and, in turn, on aboveground plant community structure. Biosolids applications of up to 40 Mg ha -1 in high-elevation shrubland ecosystems, dominated by Mo-containing shale deposits, can aid in reducing imbalances between Mo and Cu in soils and plants; excessive plant Mo, when consumed by ruminants, can lead to molybdenosis. Biosolids and lime applications (both at 224 Mg ha -1 ) have been shown to improve long-term reclamation success on acid-generating, heavy metal-containing fluvial mine tailings. Thirty years of grazing land research, focused on soil and aboveground plant benefits, illustrate that soil health and plant productivity can be improved to the greatest extent at biosolids application rates close to 10 Mg ha -1 . Finally, 40 yr of dryland agroecosystem research (a) have helped identify biosolids N fertilizer equivalency (∼8 kg N Mg -1 ) and thus dryland winter wheat application rates (e.g., 4.5-6.7 dry Mg ha -1 ); (b) have identified first-year mineralization rates of 25-32%; (c) dispute the "time bomb" theory by showing that plant metal uptake follows an exponential rise to a maximum; (d) showcase economic return to producers via increased wheat grain protein content; (e) suggest that biosolids-borne proteins and their degradation products are labile C and N sources; (f) have led to long-term tracking of micronutrients and heavy metals in soils and revealed that plants-soil concentrations will not lead to groundwater degradation and that plants are safe for human consumption; and (g) have shown that biosolids provide Zn, helping to overcome soil deficiencies and enhancing Zn biofortification in wheat grain. This latter point is important because ∼2 billion people globally suffer from Zn deficiencies. Health risks caused by food containing Cd is a concern worldwide. Interaction between Mn and Cd has been widely studied in normal hydroponic solution with high ion activities (e.g., the study on sharing of transporter Natural Resistance-Associated Macrophage Protein 5 between Mn and Cd in rice [Oryza sativa L.]). However, interaction of Mn and Cd in crops like rice and spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.) at field ion activity level is still unknown. Thus, an ethyleneglycoltetraacetate-buffered solution experiment was conducted to explore the effect of Mn on the uptake and accumulation of Cd and other mineral elements in rice and spinach. In rice, antagonism of Mn and Cd was only observed in roots at deficient and toxic levels of external Mn 2+ . Compared with those at Mn 2+ sufficiency (pMn 2+ 6.7-5.3), average root Cd levels were elevated significantly by 1.85-3.05 times at Mn 2+ deficiency (pMn 2+ 8.2) but decreased by 1.57-2.59 times at Mn 2+ toxicity (pMn 2+ 4.8). The antagonism between Mn and K/Mg in rice shoots might be caused by their common role in physiological processes in plants. Antagonism of Mn/Ni in spinach in this work was consistent with their shared transporters in dicots. Results about the antagonism of root Cd/Mn at Mn 2+ deficiency suggest that sufficiently available Mn 2+ is significant to reduce Cd uptake in rice under field levels of ion activity, but it was not for spinach because the change of tissue Cd was insignificant with the increase of Mn 2+ activity from deficiency to toxicity., (© 2022 The Authors. Alluvial riparian soils act as a filtration system, improving the environmental quality of downstream soils and waters. In areas affected by coal mining, alluvial soils also serve as a modern "sink" of fossil carbon (C). To date, little research has been done on ecosystem services provided by alluvial landscapes (i.e., river islands and tributary deltas) in the retention of coal in coal-mining regions. The objective of this study was to distinguish between and quantify geogenic and neogenetic C in alluvial soils of the North Branch of the Susquehanna River (NBSR). To investigate this, we compared five thermal analysis methods to quantify geogenic (coal) C in soils. Our results indicate that multivariate curve resolution of ramped thermal combustion data provided the most accurate estimate of coal content in soils. Our analysis found that NBSR alluvial soils have accumulated ∼375 Gg of anthropogenic, geogenic C (upper 1 m). In these soils, an average of ∼11% of soil mass is attributable to coal, yet ∼73% of the total soil C is attributable to geogenic C. These soil organic C stocks are substantially greater than locally mapped riparian soils unaffected by coal mining and are greater than regional organic soils (Histosols). Quantification of microbial decomposition of coal in alluvial soils and vulnerability to extreme flood events (potential remobilization) requires further investigation and will be important in determining the fate of this C sink., (© 2022 The Authors. Due to the environment pollution by cadmium (Cd) near industrial metallurgic factories and the widespread use of phosphorus fertilizers, the problem of toxic Cd effect on plants is well discussed by many authors, but the phytotoxicity of Cd under iron (Fe) deficiency stress has not been sufficiently studied. The aim of the work was to study comprehensively the effect of Cd under Fe deficiency conditions on physiological, biochemical, and anatomical parameters of rice varieties, to identify varietal differences in plant response to the effect of double stress. Relative resistance and sensitivity to the joint effect of Cd and Fe deficiency stress rice varieties have been identified. Double stress decreased a linear growth and biomass accumulation of roots and shoots (by 36-50% and 33-46% and 32-56% and 32-48%, accordingly), content of photosynthetic pigments (Chl a , Chl b , and carotenoids by 36-51%, 32-47%, and 64-78%, accordingly), and relative water content (by 18-26%). Proline content increased by 28-103% in all rice varieties, but to a lesser extent in sensitive varieties. The thickness of the lower and upper epidermis and the diameter of vascular bundles of leaves decreased by 18-50%, 46-60%, and 13-48%, accordingly. The thickness of the root endodermis and exodermis and diameter of the central cylinder mainly decreased. The thickness of the exodermis increased slightly by 7%, and the diameter of the central cylinder remained at the control level in resistant Madina variety while in sensitive Chapsari variety, these indicators decreased significantly by 50 and 45%, accordingly. Thus, the aggravation of adverse effect of Cd under Fe deficiency conditions and the varietal specificity of plants' response to double stress were shown. Urban gardeners contribute to sustainable cities and often take great care to limit exposure to soil contaminants like lead (Pb). Although best management practices (BMPs) like mulching to reduce soil splash can limit crop contamination, they may not eliminate all contamination for leafy greens, which trap soil particles. How effective is washing at removing Pb contamination from leafy greens when using BMPs? Are certain washing techniques more effective than others? We present results from two experiments addressing these questions. We grew lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) in homogenized high-Pb (∼1,150 mg kg -1 ) and low-Pb (∼90 mg kg -1 ) soils in Brooklyn, NY, and Ithaca, NY. Our results show that washing can remove 75-94% of Pb from lettuce, including that remaining after the use of contamination-reducing BMPs. It was estimated that washing removed 97% of Pb deposited by splash, which is the dominant source of Pb, and removed 91% deposited by downward deposition. All washing techniques were effective at reducing Pb levels, with differences in effectiveness ranked as: commercial soak > vinegar soak > water soak (and water rinse not significantly different from vinegar or water soak). Washing crops grown in low-Pb soils is also important. Without washing, lettuce grown in low-Pb soil may still have Pb levels above the European Commission comparison value. Recently, soils heavy metals pollution and health risks researches in oasis are few, and in this study, the Aibi lake basin-a typical oasis-was chosen as the research area, and then, we evaluated the pollution status and sources identification and analyzed the health risks of ten heavy metals in the soils. Results showed that (1) the average (range) values for As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn were (6.500-48.040) 20.011, (0.0002-0.088) 0.035, (0.060-18.150) 5.994, (24.160-106.400) 53.557, (3.460-58.760) 16.981, (0.0002-0.099) 0.042, (195.310-842.850) 483.311, (0.960-70.100) 14.235, (0.180-25.390) 8.086, and (22.340-156.250) 61.334 mg/kg, respectively, and we can get except for As, the maximum values of other nine elements all within the limited values provided by the soil environmental quality risk control standard of China. (2) Health risk evaluation showed that the total exposure amount for ADI ing for children and adults was 0.001067998 and 0.000344707, ADI inh for children and adults was 9.69977E-08 and 7.95869E-08, ADI derm for children and adults was 8.52275E-06 and 2.09927E-06, and the order of exploring ways is ADI ing  > ADI inh  > ADI derm . (3) The multivariate statistical analysis and PMF results showed that Cr, Cu, Co, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn primarily come from the natural background and man-made sources; Cd primarily comes from man-made sources; As and Hg come from natural background sources and industry sources. Physically based models have been part of many risk assessment studies concerning pesticide or nutrient transport within (sub)catchments or at plot scale, but they are only poorly validated for simulating the transport of veterinary medicinal products. Veterinary medicinal products not only pose a risk to the quality of our waters but also tend to accumulate in soils, where they are associated with the appearance of resistant bacteria and long-term leaching. In this study, the physically based leaching model MACRO 5.2 was applied for simulating sulfamethazine (SMZ) transport over a period of more than 10 yr. The model was set up using reversible kinetic adsorption and equilibrium adsorption forming non-extractable residues. Two different calibration periods were used to estimate uncertainties in predicted SMZ leaching associated with calibration based on short-term data. Using the whole period for model calibration, SMZ leaching could be simulated adequately, but parameter ranges were wide due to correlation between the parameters. When using only the first period for calibration, the quality of the prediction strongly depended on the information content of the data set. The calculation of temporal sensitivity indices revealed that the effect of complex sorption parameters on the model output increased with time. Thus, parameters that appeared insensitive in a short-term calibration were required for reliable long-term simulations. In conclusion, a temporal sensitivity analysis beyond the calibration period might identify parameters that were not constrained enough by the calibration procedure. Arsenic (As) and lead (Pb) are common soil contaminants, environmentally hazardous, and threats to public health. Addition of soluble phosphate is known to be effective for in situ remediation of Pb-contaminated soils, but phosphate additions displace As from the soil particles and increase As concentration in soil solution. This study examined the dual use of iron (Fe) and phosphorus (P) amendments to soil that was highly contaminated with As and Pb. The test soil originated from a former smelter site in Utah with As and Pb concentrations of 66,400 mg Pb kg -1 and 7,520 mg As kg -1 . Goethite, ferrihydrite, and Fe-rich water treatment residuals (Fe-WTRs) were added to immobilize As, and soluble P was added to reduce Pb lability. The Fe amendments were added in Fe/As molar ratios ranging from 1:1 to 1:10, and P was added in P/Pb molar ratios ranging from 0.2:1 to 5:1. Iron-rich water treatment residuals were found to be the most effective Fe amendment. When Fe-WTR and P were added simultaneously, the P concentrations required to immobilize Pb resulted in increased mobilization of As, even when Fe-WTR were added at 10:1 Fe/As. However, when P was added first at 5:1 P/Pb, incubated for 1 wk, and then amended with Fe-WTR at 10:1 Fe/As, both Pb and As were significantly immobilized. Urban community gardens are becoming increasingly important to rehabilitate developed lands and combat the lack of access to fresh produce. Portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) offers a rapid, cost-effective method for assessing the elemental composition of soils but needs further study to determine its efficacy in urban agriculture. The objectives of this study were to evaluate if pXRF measurements of macronutrients (Ca, K, P), micronutrients (Cu, Mn, Zn), and toxic elements (As, Pb) generate results comparable with traditional soil analyses and if the soil measurements correlate with plant tissue concentrations at 10 community gardens across the eastern United States. From field-condition analyses of soils by pXRF and pseudototal digestions, we observed that both methods provide agreeable estimates of concentrations for some elements (Mn, Cu, Zn, Pb) but not for macronutrients (Ca, K, P). We hypothesize that low accuracy in pXRF measurements and macronutrients within silicates caused the poor agreement between the methods. Sieved and dried soil pXRF concentrations were in strong agreement with field-condition pXRF concentrations, suggesting rock removal and drying did not improve measurements. Our results highlight that pXRF can be an accurate and effective tool for screening for Mn, Cu, Zn, and Pb. Some elements, such as Pb in fruits; Mn, Cu, and Zn in leaves; and Zn and Pb in roots, could be estimated by soil pXRF or inductively coupled plasma-based analyses. Macronutrients were poorly estimated for fruits, leaves, and roots. Vacuole compartmentalization plays an important role in the storage of heavy metals in hyperaccumulators. Is the vacuolar compartmentation a simple shielding process or a dynamic process that continuously consumes cell sap resources? How does glutathione affect the process of vacuolar compartmentalization? These unknown questions are very important to understand the mechanism of vacuole compartmentalization and can provide a guide for the design of hyperaccumulator plants by genetic engineering. Therefore, this study explored the enzyme activities, total cadmium, Cd 2+ , glutathione, oxidized glutathione, and reactive oxygen species contents in protoplasts and vacuoles of leaf cells in Solanum nigrum L. through subcellular separation. The results showed that vacuolar compartmentalization was a dynamic process that actively induced the related substances produced by cell sap to enter the vacuole for detoxification. When regulating the decreased glutathione content with buthionine sulfoximine, the total cadmium and combined cadmium in protoplasm decreased significantly, but the vacuole still maintained a high proportion of cadmium content and stable ROS content, which indicated that various external resources were preferentially used to maintain cadmium storage and homeostasis in vacuole rather than outside vacuole. Slag produced in mining and smelting of manganese carbonate ore potentially pollutes the environment and endangers the health of humans and other living organisms. This study investigates the uptake of six heavy metals, Cu, Pb, Mn, Zn, Cr and Cd, by bryophytes and vascular plants growing on manganese carbonate slag in the Houshangou Slag Field near Zunyi City, Guizhou Province, China. Determination of heavy metal uptake in bryophytes and vascular plants may identify species suitable as biomonitors for bioremediation of polluted lands. Eight bryophyte taxa were identified in the study area; among which, Bryum argenteum and Physcomitrium eurystomum were dominant; life forms of bryophytes were predominantly short turfs. Three monocotyledons, all Poaceae, and five dicotyledons were recorded in four families. The highest heavy metal uptake in bryophytes, Mn content by B. argenteum, was more than 25,000 mg·kg -1 . Furthermore, determination of heavy metal content in roots, leaves and fruits of six vascular plants demonstrated that each had a unique capacity for heavy metal accumulation: roots, leaves and fruits of similar plant species exhibited varying uptake capacity. Mn content in leaves was recorded in the order: B. davidii > A. tricolor > E. crus-galli > C. argentea > P. acinosa > C. album. In summary, B. argenteum, Echinochloa crus-galli and Phytolacca acinosa have strong enrichment capacity for heavy metals. Arsenic (As) contamination in wells is common throughout the northeastern United States. It is well documented that lead-arsenate (PbHAsO 4 ) pesticides were widely used on fruit tree orchards from the 1890s to 1950s. This study evaluates the potential for As contamination of groundwater from former orchards in Connecticut, where there were over 47,000 orchards in 1935. A proximity analysis involving 189 orchards and 114 domestic wells was conducted to assess the spatial relationship between historic orchards and As in wells. Field studies were then conducted to characterize As and lead (Pb) distributions in soils and wells near historic orchards. The proximity analysis found that the wells with no detected As were further away from historic orchards and had fewer historic orchards within their vicinity when compared with wells that contained As. The field investigations found that elevated levels of As and Pb were widespread in soils from orchards established by 1951, with some As concentrations exceeding 200 ppm. In some soils, As and Pb were leachable at concentrations exceeding USEPA drinking water standards in synthetic precipitation laboratory tests. It was also found that the wells nearest to the impacted soils tended to contain the highest As concentrations, while the wells located in areas that were forested prior to 1970 contained no As. Overall, this study found that As and Pb from legacy pesticide residues are still abundant in former orchard soils and that a strong spatial relationship exists between As-contaminated wells and historic orchards. Soil samples from a transect from low to highly hydrocarbon-contaminated soils were collected around the Brazilian Antarctic Station Comandante Ferraz (EACF), located at King George Island, Antarctica. Quantitative PCR (qPCR) analysis of bacterial 16S rRNA genes, 16S rRNA gene (iTag), and shotgun metagenomic sequencing were used to characterize microbial community structure and the potential for petroleum degradation by indigenous microbes. Hydrocarbon contamination did not affect bacterial abundance in EACF soils (bacterial 16S rRNA gene qPCR). However, analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed a successive change in the microbial community along the pollution gradient. Microbial richness and diversity decreased with the increase of hydrocarbon concentration in EACF soils. The abundance of Cytophaga, Methyloversatilis, Polaromonas, and Williamsia was positively correlated (p-value = <.05) with the concentration of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) and/or polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH). Annotation of metagenomic data revealed that the most abundant hydrocarbon degradation pathway in EACF soils was related to alkyl derivative-PAH degradation (mainly methylnaphthalenes) via the CYP450 enzyme family. The abundance of genes related to nitrogen fixation increased in EACF soils as the concentration of hydrocarbons increased. Cyantraniliprole is an anthranilic diamide insecticide used for the effective management of diamondback moth in cabbage. Dietary risk assessment of pesticides in food is a major concern now. This study developed a QuEChERS/HPLC-PDA-based highly efficient and reliable method, registering 89.80-100.11% recoveries of cyantraniliprole and its metabolite IN-J9Z38 from cabbage and soil with a relative standard deviation of 0.43-5.77%. Field experiment was conducted to study the residue dissipation of cyantraniliprole in cabbage and soil. Two foliar treatments of 10.26% formulation (Benevia) at 60 (T 1 ) and 120 (T 2 ) gram active ingredient/hectare were applied. The dissipation half-lives of cyantraniliprole in cabbage and soil were determined to be 3.5-4.2 and 3.8-5.3 days at T 1 and 3.9-4.8 and 4.1-4.7 days at T 2 , respectively. The maximum concentrations of IN-J9Z38 at T 1 and T 2 were 0.819 and 1.061 mg/kg, respectively, on the fifth day. A risk quotient value of <1 indicates no dietary risk to the consumers. Cadmium (Cd) leaching is often estimated in Cd balance models using the product of drainage water (precipitation excess) and soil solution Cd concentration. However, Cd concentrations are seldom available but rather predicted using empirical models. Despite the availability of empirical models that estimate soil solution Cd concentrations, they have limitations for use in New Zealand where total Cd in agricultural soils is low and organic matter (OM) high. This study derived a Freundlich-type model from desorption data and a soil-liquid partitioning coefficient (K D ) model based on sorption data to predict soil solution Cd concentrations from commonly measured soil parameters that could be used to calculate Cd leaching fluxes. Independent soil solution Cd concentrations and Cd fluxes measured in drainage water from field trials were used to validate the predictive capacity of the models. It was found that soil pH and OM content were the most important factors controlling soil solution Cd, along with total Cd. Both models explained 83% of the variation in measured soil solution Cd concentrations in an independent dataset. Comparisons between Cd fluxes predicted using the Freundlich-type model and measured fluxes were within 25% of each other at 6 of 19 field sites studied. However, physical and chemical nonequilibrium conditions in soils and uncertainty in measured values likely contributed to differences between predicted and measured Cd fluxes at other sites. To unravel the impact of nonequilibrium and soil physical conditions on Cd concentrations in drainage water, more data are required on Cd concentrations collected under field conditions. Cadmium toxicity is considered a major threat to several crops worldwide. Hematite nanoparticles (NPs), due to their small size and large specific surface area, could be applied as an adsorbent for toxic heavy metals in soil. Also, they serve as an efficient nano-fertilizer, promoting Fe availability and biomass production in plants, thus enabling Cd 2+ -induced stress tolerance. The phytotoxicity of five different concentrations of hematite NPs, ranging from 500 to 8,000 mg·kg -1 , and Cd 2+ concentrations (110 or 130 mg·kg -1 Cd 2+ ) alone or combined with 500 mg·kg -1 NPs was evaluated in maize. The changes in fresh weight, element analysis, cell cycle regulation, DNA banding patterns and proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) expression were used as biomarkers. The results revealed that increased fresh weight and fewest polymorphic DNA bands were detectable after treatment with 500 mg·kg -1 NPs. However, at 8,000 mg·kg -1 NPs, PCNA expression increased significantly, which resulted in cell cycle arrest at the G1/S checkpoint in roots. Significant reductions in fresh weight, altered nutrient profiles and cell cycle perturbations are considered symptoms of Cd 2+ toxicity in maize. Conversely, amending 500 mg·kg -1 NPs with 130 mg·kg -1 Cd 2+ increased fresh weight, Fe concentration and genomic template stability, while reducing Cd 2+ uptake and PCNA1 expression. Overall, 8,000 mg·kg -1 hematite NPs interfered with the cellular homeostatic balance of maize, resulting in a cascade of genotoxic events, leading to growth inhibition. Fifty years ago, the Journal of Environmental Quality (JEQ) was launched to provide an outlet for publication of research on the impacts of agriculture on the environment, and vice versa. A core concept of JEQ is advancement of environmental science, with emphasis on understanding factors that affect the fate, risks, and quality of soil, water, and atmospheric systems, and how these system processes affect plants, microbes, and animals. Trace elements are a focus area of JEQ because when present at higher than natural concentrations, they may pose risks to environmental quality and ecosystem health, depending on their bioavailability. Trace element biogeochemical cycling is affected by anthropogenic influences on land, air, and water, including land management practices such as agriculture and mining. The Journal of Environmental Quality has published a prolific catalog of scientific research publications on trace elements and their risks to humans, soil health, water quality, and the environment. In this review, research on trace elements and their impacts on environmental quality is presented, with a special focus on work published in JEQ., (© 2021 The Authors. In developed countries, the ideas of ecological agricultural production, continuous cycle, and waste-free production technologies have gained popularity. The effect from the production and consumption of ecological agricultural products is determined by the least harm to the environment, increasing the competitiveness of products, and receiving additional profit from increasing prices for higher quality products. The production of organically safe products is based on the principle of biologization, i.e., the widespread use of biological preparations, a high proportion of legumes (sources of nitrogen), and avoiding chemical plant protection products, transgenic plants, and genetically modified organisms (GMOs). This study aims to increase the productivity of safflower and improve the physicochemical and biological indicators of dark chestnut soils through the use of biologized technologies in the organic farming system. Standard methods for assessment and statistical analysis of physical and chemical parameters of soils were carried out in zone 1 of West Kazakhstan. This made it possible to identify the most optimal technology for the cultivation of safflower. The study results showed that under the influence of the phytomeliorative action of safflower in the 0-20 cm layer of dark chestnut soils, one could note an increase in the content of nitrate nitrogen by 5.95%, an increase in the content of mobile phosphorus by 5.22%, and soil loosening by 0.010 g/cm 3 , with the structure of the soil being 64.43%. Strong biological activity of the soil was established by the crops of safflower. The highest yield of safflower oil about 0.23 t/ha with an oil content of 30.1% was obtained using the biologized technology option. In this study, a collaborative system of Fe 0 and mixed anaerobic microorganisms was established for remediating chromium (Cr)-contaminated soil and restraining the translocation of Cr from soil to swamp cabbage (Ipomoea aquatica Forssk.). Solid phase characterization demonstrated that more reactive secondary minerals such as green rust, magnetite, and lepidocrocite were generated in the composite system as compared with the Fe 0 -only system. Hence, the Fe 0 -microorganisms composite system achieved a remarkably higher aqueous Cr(VI) removal of 85.6%, 2.9 times higher than that in the Fe 0 -only system. After 14 d remediation, easily available Cr(VI) and Cr total species such as water-soluble, exchangeable, and bound-to-carbonates were converted to less available Cr(III) and Cr total species (e.g., Fe-Mn oxides-bound and organic matter-bound species) because of the production of Cr-Fe hydroxides and oxides [Cr x Fe 1-x (OH) 3 or Cr x Fe 1-x OOH] on the Fe 0 surface. A pot experiment showed that Cr uptake by swamp cabbage after the composite system remediation was suppressed by 69.1%, two times higher than that after the Fe 0 -only system remediation. Excessive Fe uptake by swamp cabbage also was efficiently inhibited by the composite system treatment due to enhanced Fe hydroxides and oxides production on the Fe 0 surface because of biological corrosion and mineralization. These results indicated that Fe 0 -microorganisms composite system remediation could efficiently enhance Cr(VI) immobilization and decrease its bioavailability and bioaccumulation by plants, which is a promising technology in Cr-contaminated soil remediation., (© 2021 The Authors. The benefit of biochar as a soil fertility enhancer is well known and has been broadly investigated. Equally, many tropical and subtropical countries use wastewater for irrigation in urban agriculture. To assess the related health risks, we determined pathogen and heavy metal fate associated with biochar application and wastewater irrigation in the urban agriculture of northern Ghana. Rice (Oryza L.) husk biochar (20 t ha -1 ), N-P-K 15-15-15 fertilizer (212.5 kg ha -1 ), and their combinations were evaluated in a field-based experiment. Untreated wastewater and tap water served as irrigation water. Red amaranth (Amaranthus cruentus L.) was used as a test crop and was grown in wet (WS) and dry (DS) cropping seasons. Irrigation water, soil, and vegetables were analyzed for heavy metals, Escherichia coli, fecal coliform, helminth eggs, and Salmonella spp. Unlike the pathogens, analyzed heavy metals from irrigation water and soil were below the FAO/WHO permissible standard for agricultural activities. Wastewater irrigation caused E. coli concentrations ranging from 0.5 to 0.6 (WS) and from 0.7 to 0.8 (DS) log 10 colony forming units per gram fresh weight (CFU g FW -1 ) on vegetables and from 1.7 to 2.1 (WS) and from 0.6 to 1.0 (DS) log 10 CFU per gram dry weight (g DW -1 ) in soil. Average log 10 CFU g FW -1 rates of 6.19 and 3.44 fecal coliform were found on vegetables, whereas in soil, 4.26 and 4.58 log 10 CFU g DW -1 were observed in WS and DS, respectively. Helminth egg populations were high in wastewater and were transferred to the crops and soil. Biochar did not affect bacteria contamination. Pathogen contamination on vegetables and in soil were directly linked to the irrigation water, with minimal or no difference observed from biochar application., (© 2021 The Authors. The behavior of trace metals may vary strongly in the course of volcanic soil development. Cadmium retention in soils is specifically important for some Galápagos islands where agriculture is leading to anthropogenic Cd contamination. To assess the influence of soil development factors on soil Cd retention and toxicity, we performed Cd sorption-desorption experiments with volcanic topsoils from the Galápagos Islands sampled along gradients of (a) substrate age (chronosequence, 1.5-1,070 ka) and (b) climate (elevation sequence, 47-866 m asl) ranging from arid lowland areas to humid highland areas. Additionally, the effects of Cd toxicity on the soil microbial community composition were evaluated for two soils of the chronosequence. In young volcanic soils, the sorption capacity was very high but decreased rapidly with soil age and increasing elevation. These trends were coupled with decreases in soil weathering indicators (e.g., electrical conductivity, pH, and effective cation exchange capacity) as well as changes in soil mineralogy. Cadmium addition did not influence total phospholipid fatty acids and basal respiration in most soils. However, with increasing Cd concentration, a pronounced reduction in the Gram-negative/Gram-positive bacteria ratio (from 0.32 to 0.12) occurred in an old, highly weathered soil with low Cd retention capacity. Our results show that up to 60% of added Cd was only weakly sorbed in old volcanic soils. As a consequence, the old volcanic soils of Galápagos bear the potential risk that the mobile Cd fraction is taken up by soil microorganisms, transferring this element into the food chain., (© 2021 The Authors. Military activities can contaminate productive land with potentially toxic substances. The most common trace metal contaminant on military bases is lead (Pb). A field experiment was begun in 2016 at Fort Riley, KS, in an area with total soil Pb concentrations ranging from 900 to 1,500 mg kg -1 and near-neutral pH. The main objectives were to test the potential of Miscanthus sp. for phytostabilization of the site and to evaluate the effects of soil amendments on Miscanthus growth, soil-plant Pb transfer, bioaccessibility of soil Pb, and soil health. The experimental design was a randomized complete block, with five treatments and four replications. Treatments were (a) existing vegetation; (b) Miscanthus planted in untilled soil, no amendments; (c) Miscanthus planted in tilled soil; (d) Miscanthus planted in tilled soil amended with inorganic P (triple superphosphate applied at 5:3 Pb:P); and (e) Miscanthus planted in tilled soil amended with organic P (Class B biosolids applied at 45 Mg ha -1 ). Tilling and soil amendments increased dry matter yields only in the establishment year. Total Pb uptake, plant tissue Pb concentration, and soil Pb bioaccessibility were significantly less in the Miscanthus plots amended with biosolids than the Miscanthus plots with no added P across all 3 yr. Enzyme activities, organic carbon, and microbial biomass were also greater in biosolids-treated plots. Results show that planting-time addition of soil amendments to Pb-contaminated soil supported Miscanthus establishment, stabilized and reduced bioaccessibility of soil Pb, reduced concentration and uptake of Pb by Miscanthus, and enhanced soil health parameters., (© 2021 The Authors.
