The recombinant kringle domain (UK1) of urokinase plasminogen activator was previously reported to exert antiangiogenic activity against Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF)-induced angiogenesis in both in vitro and in vivo models. In this study, we explored the molecular signaling mechanisms involved in the antiangiogenic activity of UK1 by examining VEGF signaling proteins. VEGF165 stimulates the phosphorylation of VEGF signaling molecules, and pretreatment with UK1 blocked VEGF-induced signal transduction associated with proliferation, survival, and migration. UK1 also suppressed VEGF165-induced activation of MMP-2. Moreover, UK1 suppressed the phosphorylation and activation of VEGFR2 in VEGF-stimulated human umbilical cord vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) by blocking the dimerization of VEGFR2. Overall, our findings suggest that UK1 inhibits VEGF-induced proliferation, migration, and matrix metalloproteinase activity of HUVECs by suppressing VEGFR2 dimerization and subsequent angiogenic signals.

AIM: The aim of this study was to estimate the national rates of induced abortion in South Korea where no quantitative national studies of abortion exist because the procedure is illegal. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A survey of 25 hospitals and 176 private clinics that provide induced abortions was conducted in 2005. The data were analyzed to estimate the nationwide rate of induced abortion. Indirect estimation methodology was used to calculate the number of annual induced abortions. RESULTS: In 2005 an estimated 342 433 induced abortions were performed in South Korea at a rate of 29.8 per 1000 women aged 15-44years. We observed that the abortion rate was higher in single women (31.6 per 1000 women) than in married women (28.6 per 1000 women). CONCLUSIONS: A significant number of induced abortions occur in both cohorts of married and unmarried women. To prevent serious physical harm to patients the government should reconsider the practicality of the current statutes that prohibit women from seeking abortions from a qualified provider. A range of monoazo blue disperse dyes has been synthesised by coupling benzenoid and heterocyclic diazo components to aniline derivatives containing ester functions. The colour properties and wet fastness of the dyes on polyester at 1/1 standard depth have been examined and rationalised in terms of dye structure. Styryl dyes have also been prepared in order to compare their wet fastness properties to those of the azo dyes.

The newly synthesized 5-methylselenyl-methyl-2′-deoxyuridine (I) is applied together with the known corresponding 5-phenylselenyl derivative for cytotoxicity tests and radiosensitizing experiments using H460 lung cancer cell line.

We have suggested an AC-PDP with extra pixel assistance structure using a MgO layer made from nano-powdered paste. This structure needs an own driving waveform at the end of conventional reset period for improvement of address discharge characteristics. It was demonstrated that the separated discharge space was coated by nano-powdered MgO paste at rear plate for counter(X-A) discharge between the sustaining and address electrodes. At this discharge, the priming particles can be supplied into the main discharge space. Therefore, address discharge characteristics can be expected to have faster response characteristics than those for the conventional structures of AC-PDP.
