Near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy was employed to determine the differences between forage mixtures of winter cereals and Italian ryegrass and to evaluate fermentation characteristics of mixed silages. Forages were harvested on five phases (Cuts 1-5), with 1 week interval (n = 100). The yield of the last harvest (Cut 5) was ensiled and analyzed on four different days (D0, D7, D14, and D90) (n = 80). Principal component analysis based on the NIR data revealed differences according to the days of harvest, differences between winter cereals and Italian ryegrass forages, and differences in the fermentation stages of silages. The partial least square regression models for crude protein (CP), crude fiber (CF), and ash gave excellent determination coefficient in cross-validation (R 2 CV  > 0.9), while models for ether extract (EE) and total sugar content were weaker (R 2 CV  = 0.87 and 0.74, respectively). The values of root mean square error of cross-validation were 0.59, 0.76, 0.22, 0.31, and 2.36 %DM, for CP, CF, EE, ash, and total sugar, respectively. Background: Computed tomography (CT) is commonly used to investigate equine paranasal sinus disease, however, only limited information is available in the literature about the detailed CT appearance of equine paranasal sinus cysts., Objectives: To investigate if paranasal sinus cysts have specific characteristics in CT images that allow differentiation from other sinus diseases., Study Design: Retrospective observational study., Methods: Evaluation and comparison of CT studies of eight horses with surgically and/or histopathologically confirmed paranasal sinus cysts and 10 horses with other confirmed paranasal sinus diseases., Results: A discrete hyperattenuating wall-like structure was detected in the periphery of the sinus lesion in precontrast acquisition in 7/8 horses with paranasal sinus cysts. A similar wall-like structure was detected in 3/10 horses with other sinus diseases, however, in contrast to horses with paranasal sinus cysts, two of these also had hyperattenuating regions within the contents of the sinus lesion. Bone destruction and formation affecting cancellous and cortical bone and dental disease were frequent in horses with paranasal sinus cysts. No significant difference in attenuation values was found when the fluid/soft tissue attenuation contents of lesions in horses with paranasal sinus cysts (mean 28.9 ± SD 9.2 HU) were compared with other sinus diseases when ethmoid haematomas were excluded (30.4 ± 12.9 HU, P = .8)., Main Limitations: Low number of cases., Conclusions: Detection of a hyperattenuating cystic wall is a helpful feature for identifying paranasal sinus cysts in CT images of horses. New enantiopure dimethyl-substituted acridino-18-crown-6 and acridino-21-crown-7 ethers containing a carboxyl group at position 9 of the acridine ring [(S,S)-8, (S,S)-9, (R,R)-10] were synthesized. The pK a values of the new crown ethers [(S,S)-8, (S,S)-9, (R,R)-10] and of an earlier reported macrocycle [(R,R)-2] were determined by UV-pH titrations. Crown ether (S,S)-8 was attached to silica gel by covalent bonds and the enantiomeric separation ability of the newly prepared chiral stationary phase [(S,S)-CSP-12] was studied by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Homochiral preference was observed and the best separation was achieved for the enantiomers of 1-NEA. The enantiomeric separation ability of the newly prepared chiral stationary phases containing acridino-18-crown-6 ether selectors was studied by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The chiral stationary phases separated the enantiomers of selected protonated primary aralkylamines efficiently. Prenatal diagnosis of fetal trisomies is usually performed by cytogenetic analysis from amniotic fluid. However, this requires lengthy laboratory procedures, high costs and is unsuitable for large-scale screening of pregnant women. An alternative method, which is rapid, inexpensive and suitable for diagnosing trisomies, even from single fetal cells, is the fluorescent polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using polymorphic small tandem repeats (STRs). In this paper, we present the method of rapid prenatal detection of trisomy 13 from amniotic fluid using fluorescent PCR and two highly polymorphic STRs (D13S258 and D13S631). The results obtained by quantitative fluorescent PCR amplification of fetal DNA were concordant with amniocyte karyotyping results in all cases. Two cases of trisomy 13 were detected from 212 amniotic fluids and the results obtained from D13S631 and D13S258 amplification are presented. In the first trisomy 13 case, a triallelic pattern was detected by both markers, and in the second case, D13 markers showed a characteristic 2:1 dosage allele ratio, both of which demonstrate trisomy 13 status. All other heterozygous disomic samples showed an allele intensity ratio of 1:1.
