OBJECTIVE To analyze the wear rate of computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) composites, polyetheretherketones and glass ceramics. MATERIAL AND METHODS Our study groups were prepared from two different resin-based composites (Brillant Crios, Cerasmart), a glass ceramic (IPS Emax CAD) and reinforced polyetheretherketone (BioHPP) material (n = 10). Premolar teeth were used as antagonists. The specimens, which were subjected to two body wear tests (240,000 cycles, 1.2 Hz, 50N) in the chewing simulator, were scanned with a 3D laser scanner both before and after the wear test. Volume loss and wear depth were determined by means of the obtained images software program. The wear pattern was examined by scanning electron microscopy. Kruskal Wallis test served for analyzing. RESULTS The least volume loss and wear depth were seen in the polyetheretherketone material (0.06 ± 0.04 mm3 , 0.02 ± 0.01 mm), while the maximum volume loss was seen in the groups containing resin-based composite. (p = 0.05). The volume loss value in glass ceramics is between CAD/CAM composites and polyetheretherketone. CONCLUSION The behavior of polyetheretherketone against enamel was different from glass ceramics and composite materials in terms of the amount of wear. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Polyetheretheketone can be considered as an alternative to other chairside materials in terms of wear resistance.

Objectives Carabelli is a nonmetric dental trait variably expressed as a small pit to a prominent cusp in the maxillary molars of modern humans. Investigations on the occurrence and expression rates of this trait have been conducted extensively, tracing its origin to genetic sources. However, there remains a lack of understanding about its potential role in chewing. In this study, we examine molar macrowear with the aim of reconstructing Carabelli trait occlusal dynamics occurring during chewing. Methods We have examined 96 deciduous and permanent maxillary molars of children and young adults from Yuendumu, an Australian Aboriginal population that was at an early stage of transition from a nomadic and hunter-gatherer way of life to a more settled existence. We apply a well-established method, called Occlusal Fingerprint Analysis, which is a digital approach for analyzing dental macrowear allowing the reconstruction of jaw movements required to produce wear pattern specific to each tooth. Results Carabelli trait slightly enlarges the surface functional area, especially in those molars where this feature is expressed in its cuspal form and it is closer to the occlusal plane. Moreover, the highly steep contact planes would also indicate that Carabelli wear areas contribute to increasing the shearing abilities of the occluded teeth, which are particularly important when processing fibrous and tough foods. Conclusions The macrowear analysis suggests that Carabelli trait in the Aboriginal people from Yuendumu slightly enhanced occlusion and probably played some functional role during mastication. Future biomechanical and microwear analyses could provide additional information on the mechanical adaptation of Carabelli trait in modern human dentition.

Teeth of iguanodontian ornithopods and ceratopsians could be remarkably similar, thus the referral of isolated dental material to particular neornithischian clades can be highly problematic. These groups are represented by the rhabdodontid Mochlodon vorosi and the basal coronosaurian Ajkaceratops kozmai in the Upper Cretaceous Csehbanya Formation at Iharkut (western Hungary). Whereas teeth of Mochlodon are common elements at the locality, no dental material belonging to Ajkaceratops was identified until now. Here we used mathematical statistical approaches, as well as tooth wear and dental microstructure analysis in order to decide whether the teeth previously referred to Mochlodon can be treated as a homogenous sample, or some remains belong rather to Ajkaceratops. According to our results, there was a striking morphological and structural convergence between the teeth of both taxa. However, the wear study revealed the existence of two different patterns within the sample. One is characterized by straight and parallel microstriations that suggest orthal movements during the jaw closure. This pattern was associated with Mochlodon. The other pattern appeared only on a few teeth, and it can be differentiated by its distinctive curved microstriations that indicate circumpalinal chewing. Because curved striations have never been described in ornithopods, but are found in several neoceratopsians, this pattern was associated here with Ajkaceratops. Here we present the first teeth that can provisionally be referred to the latter genus. We believe that the methodology discussed in this article will facilitate distinguishing ceratopsian and ornithopod teeth in other localities as well. Feeding in thyreophoran dinosaurs is poorly understood. Although the group existed for over 130 million years, only the Early Jurassic basal thyreophoran Scelidosaurus harrisonii and the Late Cretaceous ankylosaurid Euoplocephalus tutus have been studied from this perspective in detail. In contrast to the earlier, conservative hypothesis of a simple "orthal pulping" feeding mode with no or limited tooth-tooth contact, recent studies have demonstrated precise dental occlusion with differing jaw mechanisms in these two species. Here, we describe the first detailed study of feeding related characters in a nodosaurid ankylosaur, Hungarosaurus tormai, from the Late Cretaceous of Hungary. Dental wear patterns comprising small, apical, and low-angled facets on the maxillary and steep, extended, and bowl-like facets on the dentary teeth reveal sophisticated tooth-tooth contact in this basal nodosaurid. The presence of two different scratch generations (vertical and low-angled) on the dentary teeth unambiguously demonstrate a multiphasic powerstroke, which is further supported by the morphology of the quadrate-articular and mandibular symphyseal joints and by the architecture of the reconstructed jaw adductors. Chewing started with an initial slicing phase associated with orthal movement that was followed by a retractive powerstroke with significant occlusal contact. Because of the curved tooth rows, these movements were probably facilitated by some mediolateral translation and/or axial rotation of the mandibles to produce precise shearing along the whole tooth row. These results demonstrate that complex jaw mechanisms and dental occlusion were more widespread among thyreophorans than thought previously and that palinal movement was present in at least two ankylosaurian lineages.

Information about food ingestion and mastication behavior during the lifespan of an individual is encoded in the dental occlusal wear pattern. To decode this information, we describe a new method called occlusal fingerprint analysis (OFA). Structural parameters of wear facets on the occlusal surface of teeth are quantified from digitized casts for the interpretation of occlusal aspects. The OFA provides an individual three-dimensional dental occlusal compass that indicates the major pathways of interaction between antagonists, revealing information about development, spatial position, and enlargement of wear facets. Humans develop a very similar overall pattern of crown contacts, although specific characteristics of wear facets reflect an individual's occlusal relationships and masticatory behavior. We hypothesize that the wear pattern is a unique character and therefore valuable for individual identification. Furthermore we suggest that OFA, when further developed, may be useful for identification of behavioral, biological, and chemical factors affecting crown morphology.

Purpose: The general aim of this study and those presented in Parts 2–4 of this series was to characterize the structure, properties, wear, and fracture of prosthetic retaining screws in fixed detachable hybrid prostheses after long-term use in vivo. This part of the overall investigation addresses whether there are differences in thread wear between the screws closest to the fulcrum and those that are farthest from the fulcrum in fixed detachable hybrid prostheses. Materials and Methods: The total number of prosthetic retaining screws used in this study was 100 (10 new and 90 used). New screws (controls) from Nobel Biocare (NB) were divided into Group 1 (slotted) and Group 2 (hexed). Ninety used screws (in service 18–120 months) were retrieved from fixed detachable hybrid prostheses in 18 patients (5 screws from each patient, 60 from NB and 30 from Sterngold). The used screws were divided into 18 groups. Additionally, each group was subdivided into A and B categories. Category A contained the middle three prosthetic screws, which were considered the farthest screws from the fulcrum line. Category B contained the most posterior two screws, which were considered the screws closest to the fulcrum line. All 100 screws were subjected to thorough, nondestructive testing. Results: Light and scanning electron microscopic examination of all used screws for each group revealed surface deterioration of the active profile of the screw threads consistent with adhesive wear. The observed thread profile deterioration ranged from mild to severe. The wear was aggressive enough to cause galling, which led to thinning of the threads and, in severe cases, to knife-edges at thread crests. In ten groups, the most anterior three screws exhibited more wear than the most posterior two screws. In addition to thread wear, severe plastic deformation was detected on the bottom part of each screw for three groups, and a long external longitudinal crack was detected in one screw of Group 2. Conclusions: The findings of this study and those presented in Parts 2–4 demonstrate that different retaining screws from the same manufacturer and/or from different manufacturers have different geometrical design, microstructures, major alloy constituents, and microhardness, and that these differences influence their preload and fractured load values. In this part of the overall investigation, the occurrence of galling as a result of wear involving prosthetic retaining screws appears to be an inevitable and unavoidable consequence of long-term use in vivo in fixed detachable hybrid prostheses regardless of the intended/original preload value. The galling rate is greater on the middle three screws compared to the most posterior two screws in fixed detachable hybrid prostheses. The wear pattern is consistent with an adhesive wear mechanism; however, this study does not provide enough data to support a definitive analysis.

We analyzed wear pattern of long-term retrieved alumina-alumina hip prostheses from Osteal, which were implanted for 15-19 years. A comparison was carried out with our previous study of 17-year Biolox alumina-on-alumina hip prostheses, (Shishido et al., J Biomed Mater Res B 2003;67:638-647) and all-alumina total hip replacement run under microseparation simulator tests. Of particular interest was the occurrence of stripe wear in these first generation alumina ceramic bearings. Two balls of Osteal revealed only one stripe wear as did the respective liners on their rim areas. In these latter balls, the stripes were shallower than those previously observed in Biolox implants. A microscopic analysis of the bearing surface was carried out using scanning electron microscopy and fluorescence microprobe spectroscopy. On average, the Osteal retrievals had one grade lower wear than Biolox retrievals. Fluorescence microprobe maps showed that Biolox ball surfaces had higher compressive stress than the Osteal likely due to severe impingement and microseparation promoted by the bulky implant design.

The alumina-ceramic total knee prosthesis developed by Kyocera Corp. was implanted in 1979, and was in clinical use for 23 years until total knee arthroplasty revision surgery in January 2002. It is believed that this is the longest clinical period of a ceramic total knee prosthesis reported to date in the world. In the present study, we gave consideration to the long-term clinical stability of the alumina-ceramic femoral component as well as the mechanism of in vivo degradation of ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) based on the evaluated wear, oxidation, and fracture toughness of the retrieved UHMWPE. We concluded that the degradation of UHMWPE by progressive oxidation is an issue to be solved in the future. To moderate stress concentration, use of a thin UHMWPE insert should be avoided. The low wear rate and the mild wear pattern observed this time suggest the possibility of reduced wear of the UHMWPE against the alumina-ceramic femoral component, and the usefulness of the alumina-ceramic total knee prosthesis component was recognized even after long clinical use.

Signs of nonalimentary tooth use were observed on the dentition of an adult male from a single burial excavated in an area close to the Uan Muhuggiag rock shelter (Tadrart Acacus, Libya), dated to more than 7800 uncalibrated years BP, that represents the most ancient human remain found in the Libyan Sahara, and provides a first glimpse of human adaptation in the early Holocene of this region. The wear pattern shows large grooves running across the occlusal surfaces of maxillary and mandibular anterior teeth and premolars. The results of macroscopic and microscopic observation, together with scanning electron microscope (SEM) examination and experimental tests, suggest that the microdamage might be due to repeated friction of vegetal fibers, probably as a consequence of basket making, net production, or mat processing. Further data are needed to allow us to distinguish among plant-oriented activities related to food acquisition (e.g., rope and net processing), food storage (e.g., basket making), or domestic handicraft (e.g., mat processing), whose implications may generate different interpretations of sexual division of labor.

An FZG back-to-back gear test machine has been used to investigate the initial wear of spur gears. By making plastic replicas of the tooth surfaces, and measurements of the same using a 3D stylus instrument, the wear pattern has been analysed. The wear tests were run on the machine according to a predefined schedule. During planned stops, negative surface replicas were made. The replicas were measured, and the amount and distribution of wear analysed. SEM pictures were also taken of the tooth surfaces, and several different types of damage were identified. The results were compared with simulated results using identical loading and geometry. It was found that the wear was quite severe at the root of the wheels and also significant at the tip. The wear was also found to form an overloaded wave pattern on the original involute form of the tooth.

A tooth eruption and wear pattern useful to determine ten age classes when the horns are not available for this purpose, is described for Cantabrian chamois (Rupicapra pyrenaica parva) inhabiting the Cantabrian Mountains (north of Spain). In animals under eight years old, age is not significantly over- or under-estimated when using the method, however, the age of animals older than eight years is significantly under-estimated.

Increasing transport capacity leads to new vehicle designs and increasing axle loads. Still it has to be better understood until which extend especially heavy vehicles cause corrugation of roads. Therefore, basic investigations concerning vehicle-road interaction are helpful to augment the understanding of the basic mechanisms. Firstly, in order to investigate the oscillatory behavior of a vehicle a MDoF oscillator moving with constant velocity on a rippled road is considered. From this, general results about wear pattern generation of the road are derived from analytical considerations concerning the dynamic contact force between vehicle and road. Secondly, a simple vehicle road interaction model is presented which consists of a vehicle model and a road exhibiting viscoelastic plastic characteristics. In systems with moving contacts spatially periodic wear patterns may appear on the contact partners surfaces. There is agreement that the patterns are related to structural resonances. Using a simple model with a moving point contact and an idealized wear model the present work reviews some of the present understanding of wear-pattern generation. The authors of this article addressed a very current topic that deals with the surface characteristics of composite resin restorations when subjected to the inevitable daily exposure to toothbrush/toothpaste abrasion.This study was carefully designed and it was carried out with similar concern. It demonstrated that whitening toothpastes, generally more abrasive than regular dentifrices, cause greater surface changes to composite restorations.The wear pattern was cumulative and was shown to be progressively worse with the increased exposure time. However, contrary to what was expected, samples of a microhybrid composite resulted in rougher surfaces when compared with samples of a posterior hybrid composite after simulated 24 months of brushing.This goes against the evidence in the literature as similar studies have demonstrated that posterior hybrid composites are generally attributed to rougher surfaces.

The present study aimed at testing whether eccentric anterior bruxing facets are associated with clinical signs from the temporomandibular joints and with palpatory tenderness of the muscles of mastication. Wear facets in the canine and incisor areas were assessed by inspecting dental stone casts made at baseline and at the end of a 4-year clinical trial involving 129 adolescents and young adults. The subjects who showed distinct increase in wear were divided into three groups: (i) wear pattern indicating an anterior thrust of the working side mandible, (ii) wear pattern indicating a posterior thrust of the working side mandible and (iii) other wear patterns. The assessment of wear patterns was made without knowledge of clinical signs of temporomandibular disorders (TMD). The eventual change in muscular or joint signs of TMD from baseline to the final examination was then obtained from the records, and the association with wear pattern was calculated. There was no significant evidence of an association between eccentric anterior wear and signs of TMD. The direction of the mandibular thrust generated by bruxing was also unassociated with the presence of TMJ and muscular signs. In conclusion, the predictive value of eccentric anterior wear facets in young subjects is too low to be helpful in the diagnosis of TMD.

The effects of food texture and burrowing on mandible wear in the predatory carabid beetle Pterostichus melanarius Illiger were investigated by feeding adults soft or hard food in jars with or without soil. Both the incisor cusp (mandible tip) and cutting surface of the mandibles erode more in response to the combination of hard food and burrowing than to hard food alone. Females were found to erode their mandibles more than males in the hard-food-only treatment, whereas males wore down their mandibles more than females in the soil-only treatment. Female P. melanarius collected in a cereal field contained signficantly more solid food items compared with males. Differences in behaviour apparently resulted in differential wear patterns between the sexes. It is shown that the process of mandible wear in P. melanarius will result in worn mandibles in their first year as adults. However, mandible size of field-sampled females were found to be best correlated with females (of similar age) in the experiment exhibiting extensive wear (foraged hard food and burrowed in soil). The mandibles of field-sampled males were similar to those of males in the hard-food-only and the soil-only treatments, which showed only slight to moderate wear. The influence of mandible wear on fecundity and survival in P. melanarius as well as in other carabid species is discussed. RESUME Usure des mandibules du carabe, Pterostichus melanarius Illiger, en fonction de l'alimentation et du comportement de fouissage L'analyse de l'influence de la texture des aliments et du fouissage, sur l'usure des mandibules a ete effectuee en nourrissant P. melanarius avec des aliments de differentes duretes dans des recipients contenant ou non du sol. Les aliments durs seuls usent moins le bord incisif (extremite de la mandibule) et la surface coupante, que leur association avec le fouissage. En presence exclusive d'aliments durs, les femelles avaient erode plus vite leurs mandibules que les mâles, tandis que chez ceux-ci le fouissage seul les avaient use plus vite que chez les femelles. Des femelles recoltees dans un champ de cereales contenaient plus d'aliments durs que les mâles. Les differences de comportement avaient provoque apparemment des types d'usure differents suivant les sexes. Les adultes usent leurs mandibules au cours de leur premiere annee de vie imaginale. Cependant, la taille des mandibules des femelles echantillonnees dans la nature correspondait mieux a celle des femelles (de meme âge) provenant des experiences ayant provoque une forte usure (aliment dur et fouissage du sol). Les mandibules des mâles echantillonnes presentaient seulement une usure moderee et ressemblaient a celles des mâles ayant consomme soit des aliments durs, soit foui le sol. La discussion a traite des relations entre l'usure des mandibules, la fecondite et la longevite de P. melanarius et d'autres especes de carabes.

A system of tooth wear and replacement is postulated for the Triassic ornithischian dinosaur Fabrosaums. This scheme is based upon the evidence of worn tooth crowns. Tooth replacement is of the normal reptilian type described by Edmund (1960). Tooth wear is unlike that in most ornithischian dinosaurs (being matched only in the late Cretaceous Thescelosaurus) and involves the development of two wear surfaces one ach crown. This peculiar wear pattern necessitates interlocking of the upper teeth with the lower during occlusion and indicates an essentially vertical jaw action. The muscular basis for such a jaw action is briefly considered.

Pongid canines, as frequently claimed, do not prevent chewing motions which lead to the flattened “human” pattern of molar and canine wear. Teeth are worn flat in contemporary pongids as the results of physiologic function. It would therefore seem improper to use wear pattern in fossils such as Gigantopithecus for taxonomic purposes out of the physiological context.
