The age of the Yukiang (Yujiang) Formation has been shrouded in controversy for more than 75 years. New investigation at the Liujing section, Hengxian County, Guangxi, has revealed a conodont sequence assignable to two Early Devonian conodont zonations: the Eognathodus kindlei?–Polygnathus pireneae Zone and the Polygnathus nothoperbonus Zone from oldest to youngest. The Gaoling and Mahuangling members of the Nahkaoling (Nagaoling) Formation and the overlying Xiayiling Member and lower part of the Shizhou Member of the Yukiang Formation are proven to belong to the Pragian Eognathodus kindlei?–Polygnathus pireneae Zone. The co-occurrence of Polygnathus pireneae and Pol. sokolovi in the lower part of the Shizhou Member demonstrates that this interval can be approximately correlated with the uppermost part of the Polygnathus pireneae Zone. However, precise level identification of the Pragian–Emsian Boundary (PEB) in the Liujing section remains dfficult due to the scarcity of suitable limestone samples for conodont analysis from the middle and upper parts of the Shizhou Member. The Daliancun and Liujing members of the Yukiang Formation and the lower part of the overlying Moding Formation are assigned to the Polygnathus nothoperbonus Zone with the nominal species of this biozone ranging from the bottom of the Daliancun Member to the lower part of the Moding Formation.

The Pennsylvanian to lower Permian succession at Madiyi, South China, represents a nearshore mixed siliciclastic-carbonate system characterized by cyclic sedimentation patterns along a depth gradient from continental siliciclastics to marine open platform carbonates. Various palaeokarst features related to subaerial exposure are widely distributed. Additionally, pedogenesis was pervasive. The identification of twenty-eight sedimentary cycles grouped into five sequences allows the reconstruction of a relative sea-level curve. The cycles represent higher frequency changes superimposed on the long-term evolution. After the initial transgression, the sea level remained relatively low in the late Bashkirian to early Moscovian. Then, it rose stepwise until a major drop occurred in the late Moscovian. Afterwards, the sea level rose again, but marine sedimentation ceased during at least the early Kasimovian. The area was flooded in the late Kasimovian, and the sea level rose until a late Gzhelian sea-level drop. The subsequent marine sequence contains uppermost Gzhelian to upper Asselian deposits, which are capped by lower Permian continental facies associated with a major regional regression. Shallow to deeper marine sedimentary settings recorded high-frequency sea-level changes throughout South China during the late Bashkirian to Asselian. The main transgression–regression cycles are clearly associated with different depositional settings during several time intervals. Furthermore, the good correlations among South China, Ukraine, and the U.S. Mid-continent are rooted in the impact of Gondwanan glaciations on the global sedimentation patterns. However, not all changes at Madiyi are the result of glacio-eustatic sea-level fluctuations; some are related to the local subsidence history and the rise of the Xuefeng Uplift.

To improve regional and intercontinental correlation of the uppermost Devonian–lowermost Carboniferous, we examined the conodont faunas and carbon isotopic records of the Tangbagou Formation in the Qilinzhai section, southern Guizhou, South China. The Tangbagou Formation is a succession of mixed carbonate–siliciclastic rocks that accumulated on a shallow-water platform under normal marine conditions. Seven conodont zones for shallow-water biofacies in South China, the Cl. gilwernensis–Cl. unicornis Zone, the Po. spicatus Zone, the Si. homosimplex Zone, the Si. sinensis Zone, the Si. eurylobata Zone, the Ps. multistriatus Zone and the Po. co. porcatus Zone in ascending order, are recognized in the Tangbagou Formation. Although apparently limited in its value for global correlation, this conodont zonation is more applicable to shallow-water biofacies in South China. Carbonate samples have yielded carbon isotopic signatures consistent with those recorded in Euroamerica sections, in particular showing four distinct characteristics: (1) the peak values of Hangenberg Carbon Isotope Excursion (HICE) during the latest Devonian, (2) a minor positive shift (P1) in the Si. homosimplex Zone during the early Tournaisian, (3) a second minor positive shift (P2) in the Si. sinensis Zone and (4) the middle Tournaisian Carbon Isotope Excursion (TICE) in the middle part of the Tangbagou Formation. The similarity in peak values (~5.5‰) and magnitude of TICE for the Qilinzhai and Belgian sections indicates that the Euro-asia δ13Ccarb trends may reflect the changes in global mean ocean δ13CDIC, rather than having been overprinted by local carbon cycling. Integration of conodont biostratigraphy and δ13C stratigraphy provides a powerful tool for stratigraphic correlation. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
