α-Formamidinium lead iodide (α-FAPbI3) has become one of the most promising candidate materials for high-efficiency and thermally stable perovskite solar cells (PSCs) owing to their outstanding optoelectrical properties and high thermal stability. However, achieving a stable form of α-FAPbI3 where both the composition and the phase are pure is very challenging. Herein, we first report on a combined strategy of precursor engineering and grain anchoring to successfully prepare MA-free and phase-pure stable α-FAPbI3 films. Engineering the precursor solutions by incorporating volatile FA-based additives completely suppresses the formation of non-perovskite δ-FAPbI3 during film crystallization. Grains of the desired α-phase are anchored together and stabilized by permeating 4-tert-butyl-benzylammonium iodide into the α-FAPbI3 film interior via grain boundaries. This cooperative scheme leads to a significantly increased efficiency close to 21% for FAPbI3 perovskite solar cells (PSCs), which is among one of the highest values to date. Moreover, the stabilized PSCs exhibit improved thermal stability and maintained ~90% of their initial efficiency after storing at 50 °C for over 1600 hours. These findings should open new routes towards fabrication of high-quality perovskite films and optoelectronic devices.

Electrochemically reducing CO 2 to valuable fuels or feedstocks is recognized as a promising strategy to simultaneously tackle the crises of fossil fuel shortage and carbon emission. Sn-based catalysts have been widely studied for electrochemical CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) to make formic acid/formate, which unfortunately still suffer from low activity, selectivity and stability. In this work, halogen (F, Cl, Br or I) was introduced into Sn catalyst by a facile hydrolysis method. The presence of halogen was confirmed by a collection of ex-situ and in-situ characterizations, which rendered more positive valence state of Sn in halogen-incorporated Sn catalyst as compared to unmodified Sn under cathodic potentials in CO 2 RR and therefore tuned the adsorption strength of the key intermediate (*OCHO) toward formate formation. As a result, the halogen-incorporated Sn catalyst exhibited greatly enhanced catalytic performance in electrochemical CO 2 RR to produce formate.

Polymer electrolyte membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE) has been regarded as a promising technology for renewable hydrogen production. However, acidic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts with long-term stability imposes a grand challenge in its large-scale industrialization. In this review, critical factors that may lead to catalyst's instability in couple with potential solutions are comprehensively discussed, including mechanical peeling, substrate corrosion, active-site over-oxidation/dissolution, reconstruction, oxide crystal structure collapse through the lattice oxygen-participated reaction pathway, etc. Last but not least, personal prospects are provided in terms of rigorous stability evaluation criteria, in situ/operando characterizations, economic feasibility and practical electrolyzer consideration, highlighting the ternary relationship of structure evolution, industrial-relevant activity and stability to serve as a roadmap towards the ultimate application of PEMWE.

Mortise-and-tenon joints have been widely used for thousands of years in wooden architectures in virtue of their artistic and functional performance. However, imitation of similar structural and mechanical design philosophy to construct mechanically adaptive materials at the molecular level is a challenge. Herein, we report a mortise-and-tenon joint inspired mechanically interlocked network (MIN), in which the [2]rotaxane crosslink not only mimics the joint in structure, but also reproduces its function in modifying mechanical properties of the MIN. Benefiting from the hierarchical energy dissipative ability along with the controllable intramolecular movement of the mechanically interlocked crosslink, the resultant MIN simultaneously exhibits notable mechanical adaptivity and structural stability in a single system, as manifested by decent stiffness, strength, toughness, and deformation recovery capacity.

Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have attracted intense attention based on their high power conversion efficiency and low production cost. However, due to the polycrystalline nature and the intrinsic hydrophilicity of the metal halide perovskite moieties, the photovoltaic performance of PSCs is largely limited by defects within the polycrystalline perovskites and the sensitivity to moisture. In this perspective, we focus on the chemically tailored interface materials to passivate the defects and improve the moisture stability of PSCs. First, we provide a brief overview of various molecular interface modifiers. Thereafter we provide examples from our recent work on organic ammonium halide‐based passivation materials as representatives to illustrate the design strategies and the modification effects. In the end, we shed light on the future development of organic ammonium halides for applications in PSCs.

Radiotherapy (RT) represents one of the major treatment methods for cancers. However, many studies have observed that in descendant surviving tumor cells, sublethal irradiation can promote metastatic ability, which is closely related to the tumor microenvironment. We therefore investigated the functions and mechanisms of sublethal irradiated liver nonparenchymal cells (NPCs) in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). In this study, primary rat NPCs and McA‐RH7777 hepatoma cells were irradiated with 6 Gy X‐ray. Conditioned media (CM) from nonirradiated (SnonR), irradiated (SR), or irradiated plus radiosensitizer celecoxib‐treated (S[R + D]) NPCs were collected and added to sublethal irradiated McA‐RH7777 cells. We showed that CM from sublethal irradiated NPCs significantly promoted the migration and invasion ability of sublethal irradiated McA‐RH7777 cells, which was reversed by celecoxib. The differentially expressed genes in differently treated McA‐RH7777 cells were enriched mostly in the AMP‐activated protein kinase/mammalian target of rapamycin (AMPK/mTOR) signaling pathway. SR increased the migration and invasion ability of HCC cells by inhibiting AMPK/mTOR signaling, which was enhanced by the AMPK inhibitor compound C and blocked by the AMPK activator GSK‐621. Analyses of HCC tissues after neoadjuvant radiotherapy confirmed the effects of radiation on the AMPK/mTOR pathway. Cytokine antibody arrays and further functional investigations showed that matrix metalloproteinase‐8 (MMP‐8) partly mediates the promotion effects of SR on the migration and invasion ability of HCC cells by regulating AMPK/mTOR signaling. In summary, our data indicate that MMP‐8 secreted by irradiated NPCs enhanced the migration and invasion of HCC by regulating AMPK/mTOR signaling, revealing a novel mechanism mediating sublethal irradiation–induced HCC metastasis at the level of the tumor microenvironment., In this work, we observed that conditioned media from sublethally irradiated liver nonparenchymal cells (NPCs) promoted the migration and invasion ability of sublethally irradiated McA‐RH7777 hepatoma cells. Background Nano‐sized extracellular vesicles secreted by cells play key roles in intercellular crosstalk, and appear to be an excellent biocompatible material as therapeutic cargoes in vivo. Previously, we have demonstrated that miR‐204‐5p is a key tumor suppressor that could inhibit tumor growth, metastasis and chemoresistance. Methods A HEK293T cell line stably expressing miR‐204‐5p (293T‐miR‐204) was constructed by lentivirus transduction. Fluorescence real‐time quantitative PCR (qPCR) was applied to measure the expression of miR‐204‐5p. CCK‐8 and colony formation assays were used to evaluate the in vitro anticancer effects, and the flow cytometry was used to detect apoptosis. The in vivo therapeutic effects of exosomal miR‐204‐5p were evaluated using a xenograft mouse model. Western blots were used to detect the protein levels of CD63, Flotillin‐2, RAB22A and Bcl2. The protein levels of RAB22A and Bcl2 in tumor tissues were measured by immunohistochemistry staining. Results MiR‐204‐5p was clearly upregulated in CRC cells after coculturing with 293T‐miR‐204 cell‐derived conditioned medium (CM) or exosomes. CCK‐8 and colony formation assays showed that the cell proliferation ability of CRC cells was clearly inhibited by 293T‐miR‐204 cell‐derived CM or exosomes. The inhibitory effects of exosomal miR‐204‐5p on cell proliferation were further confirmed in other types of cancers. Exosomal miR‐204‐5p could induce apoptosis and increase the sensitivity of cancer cells to the chemotherapeutic drug—5‐fluorourcil. In addition, exosomal miR‐204‐5p inhibited the tumor growth in mice. Western blot assay and IHC staining showed that the protein levels of miR‐204‐5p targets were clearly decreased in cancer cells or xenograft tissues treated with exosomal miR‐204‐5p. Unfrozen water content has strong control on the permeability, strength and thermal properties of frozen soil. Several techniques have been used to measure unfrozen water content in frozen soil and many models have been developed for its prediction. However, there has been little investigation on the quantitative analysis of the relationship between pressure and unfrozen water content. With the development of artificial ground freezing techniques and deep mining, knowledge of unfrozen water content in frozen soil under high pressure is critical to the stability of the frozen structures. Here, a new predictive model is presented based on the relationship between chemical potential and unfrozen water content and a previous empirical formula. The simulation results are in good agreement with those from laboratory tests. Both the theoretical analysis and the test results indicated that: (a) the pressure applied to frozen soil reduces the freezing point of bulk water and delays the phase change, and (b) unfrozen water content increases with increasing pressure, and at higher pressures the change is greater. The results improve our understanding of the physical and mechanical properties of freezing soil under pressure for artificial ground freezing applications and deep mining engineering.

Renal fibrosis, the ultimate common pathway of progressive nephropathy, is characterized by excess accumulation and deposition of extracellular matrix (ECM) within the renal interstitium and glomeruli, finally resulting in end-stage kidney failure. TGFβ1 is not only abnormally increased during fibrosis but also involved in ECM induction and accumulation. Based on the bioinformative analyses, phosphatase and tensin homolog deleted on chromosome ten (PTEN) and focal adhesion kinase (FAK) signaling pathway might be involved in TGFβ1 functions on renal fibrosis development. In the present study, fibrosis was induced in HK-2 cells using TGFβ1 and PTEN expression was significantly suppressed by 24 or 48 hours TGFβ1 treatment. PTEN overexpression in HK-2 cells improved TGFβ1-induced fibrosis within α-SMA and E-cadherin. According to the KEGG signaling pathway annotation analyses on microarray profiles (GSE23338 and GSE20247) and immunoblotting validation, FAK signaling might be involved in PTEN functions in TGFβ1-induced fibrosis. PTEN overexpression significantly inhibited TGFβ1- or unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO)-induced FAK signaling pathway activation both in vitro and in vivo; more importantly, PTEN silence enhanced TGFβ1- or UUO-induced fibrosis, while FAK inhibitor PF567721 significantly reversed the effects of PTEN silence, indicating that PTEN exerted its effects on TGFβ1- and UUO-induced fibrotic development in vitro and in vivo via inhibiting FAK signaling pathway. In summary, these findings indicate that PTEN could improve cellular fibrotic changes and renal fibrosis via inhibiting FAK/AKT signaling pathway. Restoring PTEN expression to target FAK/AKT signaling pathway might be a potent strategy for renal fibrosis treatment.

Despite rapid improvements in efficiency, long‐term stability remains a challenge limiting the future up‐scaling of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Although several approaches have been developed to improve the stability of PSCs, applying ammonium passivation materials in bilayer configuration PSCs has drawn intensive research interest due to the potential of simultaneously improving long‐term stability and boosting power conversion efficiency (PCE). This review focuses on the recent advances of improving n‐i‐p PSCs photovoltaic performance by employing ammonium halide‐based molecular modulators. The first section briefly summarizes the challenges of perovskite materials by introducing the degradation mechanisms associated with the hygroscopic nature and ion migration issues. Then, recent reports regarding the roles of overlayers formed from ammonium‐based passivation agents are discussed on the basis of ligand and halide effects. This includes both the formation of 2D perovskite films as well as purely organic passivating layers. Finally, the last section provides future perspectives on the use of organic ammonium halides within bilayer‐architecture PSCs to improve the photovoltaic performances. Overall, this review provides a roadmap on current demands and future research directions of molecular modulators to address the critical limitations of PSCs, to mitigate the major barriers on the pathway toward future up‐scaling applications., Passivating the defects and preventing the degradation of metal halide perovskites by humidity continues to pose a big challenge to the vast scientific community developing this promising new light harvesting material. In this review, recent advances and prospects employing organic ammonium halide‐based passivation materials that attempt to suppress such issues in n–i–p architecture perovskite solar cells are discussed.

The electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) that converts renewable electricity into storable hydrogen, a sustainable and clean energy carrier, provides a promising method to mitigate the energy crisis and environmental pollution. In general, noble-metal-based nanomaterials (including Pt, Rh, Ru, Ir, etc.) have drawn tremendous research attention in the context of the HER because of their nearly optimal bindings to hydrogen, robust stability and tunable physical/chemical properties. Particularly, carbon as a substrate not only offers a stabilizing and conductive matrix, but also impacts the electronic structure of the supported metal by interfacial interaction, necessitating a detailed understanding. To speed up the sluggish kinetics of the HER, the design and construction of efficient electrocatalysts is of crucial importance. Herein, a comprehensive review of the recent advances in carbon-supported noble-metal electrocatalysts is presented, focusing on their synthetic strategies, structural analyses, and applications in HER electrocatalysis. Specifically, the correlation between the electronic structure and activity is discussed. Furthermore, a perspective is offered highlighting the challenges and opportunities for development of highly efficient HER electrocatalysts, with the aim for widespread utilization of practical water electrolyzers toward green hydrogen production. Layered γ-type iron oxyhydroxide (γ-FeOOH) is a promising material for various applications; however, its sheet-shaped structure often suffers from instability that results in aggregation and leads to inferior performance. Herein, a kinetically controlled hydrolysis strategy is proposed for the scalable synthesis of γ-FeOOH nanosheets arrays (NAs) with enhanced structural stability on diverse substrates at ambient conditions. The underlying mechanisms for the growth of γ-FeOOH NAs associated with their structural evolution are systematically elucidated by alkalinity-controlled synthesis and time-dependent experiments. As a proof-of-concept application, γ-FeOOH NAs are developed as electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), where the sample grown on nickel foam (NF) exhibits superior performance of high catalytic current density, small Tafel slope, and exceptional durability, which is among the top level of FeOOH-based electrocatalysts. Density functional theory calculations suggest that γ-NiOOH in situ generated from the electrooxidation of NF would induce charge accumulation on the Fe sites of γ-FeOOH NAs, leading to enhanced OER intermediates adsorption for water splitting. This work affords a new technique to rationally design and synthesize γ-FeOOH NAs for various applications.

Passivation of interfacial defects serves as an effective means to realize highly efficient and stable perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, most molecular modulators currently used to mitigate such defects form poorly conductive aggregates at the perovskite interface with the charge collection layer, impeding the extraction of photogenerated charge carriers. Here, a judiciously engineered passivator, 4-tert-butyl-benzylammonium iodide (tBBAI), is introduced, whose bulky tert-butyl groups prevent the unwanted aggregation by steric repulsion. It is found that simple surface treatment with tBBAI significantly accelerates the charge extraction from the perovskite into the spiro-OMeTAD hole-transporter, while retarding the nonradiative charge carrier recombination. This boosts the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the PSC from ≈20% to 23.5% reducing the hysteresis to barely detectable levels. Importantly, the tBBAI treatment raises the fill factor from 0.75 to the very high value of 0.82, which concurs with a decrease in the ideality factor from 1.72 to 1.34, confirming the suppression of radiation-less carrier recombination. The tert-butyl group also provides a hydrophobic umbrella protecting the perovskite film from attack by ambient moisture. As a result, the PSCs show excellent operational stability retaining over 95% of their initial PCE after 500 h full-sun illumination under maximum-power-point tracking under continuous simulated solar irradiation.

Purpose Apolipoprotein E knockout (apoE−/−) mouse is one of the most popular models for cardiovascular research, especially in the study of atherosclerosis. Naturally, large amount of studies try to uncover the role of apoE in atherosclerosis, and indeed apoE plays an important role in this pathogenesis. Kidney is an organ that contains lots of capillaries and also largely expresses apoE. Moreover, a protective role of apoE in kidney as an autocrine regulator has been demonstrated previously, however, the underlying mechanism is largely unknown. Experimental design In this study, comparative proteomics is for the first time used to identify the differential proteins in kidneys of apoE−/− and wild type mice, respectively, and we try to reveal the signaling network of apoE in mice kidney using bioinformatics analysis. Results Our findings show that approximately 80 proteins are significantly differentially expressed in kidneys of apoE−/− and wild type mice, and the signaling network correlated to apoE is successfully established by employing bioinformatics assay. Conclusions and clinical relevance Taken together, we originally identify the proteins with differential expression and propose an apoE correlated molecular network in mice kidney. These findings further provide evidence of the role of apoE in mice kidney and a brand new perspective in the protection and treatment of kidney disease.

Autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease (ARPKD) is a severe inherited disorder with an incidence of 1/20 000 live births. Mutations of PKHD1 (polycystic kidney and hepatic disease gene 1) gene were identified to be responsible for ARPKD. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms remain largely unknown. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are an abundant class of small RNAs with global effect on gene expression. Up to 30% of human protein coding genes may be regulated by miRNAs. However, to date, nothing is known regarding the role of miRNAs in PKHD1. In this study, we exploited bioinformatics to analyse the 3'UTR of PKHD1 gene and illustrated that the 3'UTR region of the gene is highly conserved in evolution. We identified about 35 candidate miRNAs within a 3738 bp window of the 3'UTR region. Of the 35 potential miRNAs, miR-365-1 emerged to post-transcriptionally modulate the expression of PKHD1. Furthermore, we demonstrated that miR-365-1 modulated PKHD1 suppressed cell–cell adhesion in part through E-cadherin. Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

The approximately 14 kb mRNA of the polycystic kidney disease gene PKD1 encodes a large ( approximately 460 kDa) protein, termed polycystin-1 (PC-1), that is responsible for autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). The unique organization of its multiple adhesive domains (16 Ig-like domains/PKD domains) suggests that it may play an important role in cell-cell/cell-matrix interactions. Here we demonstrated that PKD1 promoted cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions in cancer cells, indicating that PC-1 is involved in the cell adhesion process. Furthermore in this study, we showed that PKD1 inhibited cancer cells migration and invasion. And we also showed that PC-1 regulated these processes in a process that may be at least partially through the Wnt pathway. Collectively, our data suggest that PKD1 may act as a novel member of the tumor suppressor family of genes.

The device performance of polymer solar cells (PSCs) is strongly dependent on the blend morphology. One of the strategies for improving PSC performance is side-chain engineering, which plays an important role in controlling the aggregation properties of the polymers and thus the domain crystallinity/purity of the donor–acceptor blends. In particular, for a family of high-performance donor polymers with strong temperature-dependent aggregation properties, the device performances are very sensitive to the size of alkyl chains, and the best device performance can only be achieved with an optimized odd-numbered alkyl chain. However, the synthetic route of odd-numbered alkyl chains is costly and complicated, which makes it difficult for large-scale synthesis. Here, this study presents a facile method to optimize the aggregation properties and blend morphology by employing donor polymers with a mixture of two even-numbered, randomly distributed alkyl chains. In a model polymer system, this study suggests that the structural and electronic properties of the random polymers comprising a mixture of 2-octyldodecyl and 2-decyltetradecyl alkyl chains can be systematically tuned by varying the mixing ratio, and a high power conversion efficiency (11.1%) can be achieved. This approach promotes the scalability of donor polymers and thus facilitates the commercialization of PSCs.
